Longtime Windows user here, and I feel like it's time to switch to Linux, but with a lack of proprietary software, I just gotta know, what do you usually do on Linux other than surf the web?
>>56012794
Watch Videos.
Edit code/documents in vim.
Plot data with gnuplot.
Process data with Octave, R or python.
DS Remote to interface with my oscilloscope.
minicom to control my buspirate
KiCAD to design pcbs.
CubicSDR for software defined radio.
Wireshark to monitor network traffic to RE network comms.
I'll stop there with specific programs, but with just Linux-native programs I have everything I need for working with networks, programming, numerical simulation (esp circuits, but generally anything I could ever need), data set processing, graphing, and statistical analysis, drawing, document creation & editing, CAD, rf/radio, signal processing, and more.
I even play games, though I admit I tend to mostly play older games as I tend to find them more fun.
I fix everything that's broken by the latest updates.
I spend hours trying to do simple things.
It just doesn't werk :^)
Which one /bee/ ?
I mean /gee/.

I welcome this initiative by Facebook and hope that they'll share their ultimate anti-adblock library with everyone, so that leechers stop ruining the fun for everyone who enjoys free websites and services.

How does it feel to be brainwashed...
>>56012641
Honestly the ad model currently in use is just outdated and ineffective. The way to monetize online content needs to be approached differently. Facebook obviously has no reason to embrace this idea because selling ad-space is a fucking cash cow, and they don't really care how effective it is, companies are still going to buy it. One alternative, for video content at least, is for the video to directly address the sponsor the product or service. So at the beginning of a vlog or whatever, instead of seeing some stupid Nvidia add with some rendered game footage that no one cares about followed by, "THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE PLAYED", the host would just say, "And a big shoutout to Nvidia for making this possible." I would venture to guess you don't just gloss over that as you would with the traditional ad. Not only is it "embedded" into the content, but the person you probably like is, in a way, personally endorsing the product, leading to better brand association. This obviously won't work perfectly with written articles and things like that, but that's why it needs to be thought about and tinkered with.

Doesn't matter, still won't buy anything.

Installed Windows XP Mode and now I'm running the SP3 version it comes with on Virtual PC. Is there anything useful or fun I can do with this?
Is it even possible to run XP without an antivirus these days?
>>56012100
Yes. What the fuck you can live in windows 7 without a virus scanner. dont download shit. srsly, and check md5 sums
>>56012100
Well, I'm sure you can run it, but of course it wouldn't be very safe, if that's what you mean.
I'm not sure if I can even install any Windows Updates on this virtual machine, or if there's even any need since this is SP3 version and I'm not sure if Microsoft even pushes updates to XP anymore. So I've no idea if Avira + Windows Firewall has any effect on my security at all apart from common sense.
I've searched everywhere, but I can't seem to find the name for this HDD problem. It basically only works in intervals and those blue lines is how long it takes for the HDD to respond.
Everything that uses the HDD takes a long time to load. I know /g/ isn't customer support, that's why I am asking how it's called, not how to fix it.
Help a noob out, please.
>>56012011
Read the rules fag
/g/ isn't for tech support
>>56013231
Exactly /g/ is for shit posting and waifus

He specifically stated he wasn't asking for tech support fag, he's interested in whether anyone knows what that phenomenon is called.
I have a 5 years old i5 2500k. it does take 5-30 seconds to build android apps on it.
Is is wise to update it now or should I wait for the next generation of intel processors?
you'll be good as long as we keep using silicon
why not just emulate the app instead of testing on device? 2500k should handle that great
>>56012005
30 seconds isn't so bad. Get up and get some water or go pee from all the water you're drinking.
Compiling bigger projects can take many hours. I used to kick off compiles on my work computer at the end of the day and hope they'd be done by the next morning.
So I am a long time owncloud user and I recently heard about this big fork...
Is owncloud now dead? Do I need to switch do this one to maintain security updates going forward? Also why did they do this?
>>56011914
Owncloud is dead, it literally went bankrupt overnight and the site even got shut down temporarily because all of the devs joined nextcloyd and every single investor pulled out their money on the same day.
Own cloud wanted to make a business so a lot of features were business only. The core devs wanted a cloud platform so they left. Next cloud doesn't have the apps yet but it does have the core devs so platform stability will win given time. If you cp -r your data dir you can just pull it into next cloud dir and change ownership
