You guys are known as the kings and queens of electronic paranoia.
So tell me, how do you guys handle your emails?
cock.li
i host my own mail server on a vps
it runs roundcube for webmail, and i use k-9mail on my phone

>call it a "redesign"
Why are they not even trying any more?
Because Mozilla isn't trying with Firefox either.
Well actually, the only thing Mozilla is trying to do is copy Chrome, and all that's doing is just hemorrhaging users.
The only browser that seems to be doing things a bit different is Vivaldi, but it's proprietary (even though it's based on Blink) and still doesn't have essential features, so I really have no desire to use it.
I really wish the Opera devs just open sourced Presto. Imagine the awesome alternatives we could've had if that happened.
>>56386059
There is Brave. Which could have been really interesting if not for their shady ad selling thing.
>made by the founder of Mozilla(the one that got fired for not liking gay marriage)
>a focus on security and privacy
>even has an ex-Tor dev on there
If not for that and the shitty UI it would be THE browser to look for I think. Shame.
Why hasn't someone just forked the last Firefox that was good and shoved all the good new stuff from Firefox in it and avoided all the cancer?
>anon you're majoring in computer science?
>do you think you could take a look at my laptop for me? It's been really slow...
>There's this thing called Gentoo, it will fix your laptop in no time.
>>56386017
Is that windows? Haha sorry, I've been using unix exclusively for the last 4 years, I wouldn't even know where to start.
Did you try checking the kernel backlogs for the system metadata? No? You should take it to a repair shop, this is out of my league.
Sure, if you grab us a bottle of wine to share when we meet up again next

Where were you when youtube stopped even listening to itself?

Hi
YouTube listen to money
People give money for YouTube
YouTube then listen to People
YouTube no give money for YouTube
If YouTube give $100,000 for YouTube then YouTube give for YouTube $100,000
Mean if YouTube give also take
Mean YouTube money more is 0
But people give money for YouTube YouTube money more is more
Thanks

>Remove Linux emulation support
>Remove Linux emulation support
>Remove Linux emulation support.
What the fuck were they thinking?
>>56385950
Linux emulation's been gone since 5.9.
>>56386048
It was outdated and unmaintained. They'd rather work on making native software run better than work on supporting Linux binaries.
If you need Linux binaries or don't want to use alternatives, just stick to Linux.
>emulating an OS when you can use that other OS
If you want GNU/Linux, use it. Dualboot GNU/Linux and OpenBSD.
How does /g/ carry his chinkpads around? I need a backpack for my XPS 13 and I need some recommendation
>>56385902
>backpack
APC TravelPower Leather bag has fucking god tier protection with multiple layers of padding for decent internal volume while looking great. Too bad it's apparently discontinued and thus hard to find now.
I got an embark backpack for $25 at target. Stylish enough, has enough space, and seems extremely durable. Holds my thinkpad in a padded sleeve snugly and all cords go in a front pocket

>Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google has suspended Project Ara, its ambitious effort to build what is known as a modular smartphone with interchangeable components, as part of a broader push to streamline the company's hardware efforts, two people with knowledge of the matter said.
Can we agree that this will never work out. Phonebloks and Project Ara will always be trash since it defeats the purpose of minimization that smartphones need?
>>56385874
>minimization that smartphones need
Minimization has no place in a world of ever larger phones. Even the new Sony Z-whatever Compact is 4.6 inches.
RIP Ara. At least Motorola and LG are trying their modular things.
Ara was shit anyway.
If you're going to do a completely modular phone, do it right. I want to actually be able to replace the underlying hardware, not just tack on stupid shit like another speaker or some sort of useless small display.
But, that will never happen, because the OEMs would throw a shit fit over how much money they'd be losing out on.
>>56385874
Nobody gave a shit about ARA after the removed nearly all the modularity the last time they gave an update.
Right now I'm bringing my old Dell Studio 540 back from the dead, gonna install Linux/GNU Mint on there.
Might get a new GPU, but old one worked for the longest time.
What are you guys working on/Frankensteining?
>>56385809
I have a Dell Precision M6300 that I use as a management console and some light testing on.
C2D T7600
4GB DDR2-667
Quadro FX1600M
250GB SSD
17" 1920x1200
Docking station
Used to use it as a KVM console for a KVM over IP unit that I had.
And still does the occasional DX9 game just fine.

other thread, is it still a good idea to use the ram I mentioned?
Or just to get new ram?
Stuff on Ebay's gettin a bit pricey, but it looks good.
Anyone else restorin' shit tonight?
So now that Kawaii Codec Pack is dead, what does /g/ recommend for the purest playback of chinese cartoons?
I really don't want to go back to the horror days of pic related.
mpv
its like vlc (you don't have to install shitty codec packs), but not shit
its also open source and runs on linux or os x
Just go back to VLC.
It actually isn't shit anymore.
>b-but muh NVIDIA drivers
It's a simple fix that takes like 2 seconds. Stop complaining, it's not VLC's fault that NVIDIA can't get their shit together.
>>56385914
>It actually isn't shit anymore.
It can play H.265 now?
Pay $10 a month for unlimited music on spotify... OR pay $10 a month for a seedbox to slave for some private tracker to download a few albums then spend fucking eternity seeding them cuz "muh ratio" then get your account banned anyway.
DO YOU FUCKING SEE HOW YOU ARE MAKING IT HARDER FOR YOURSELF YOU FUCKING AUTISTIC RETARDS HAHAHA HOLY SHIT.

They just couldn't resist adding some useless gimmick to it.

What about it?
how long have we been stuck with 4 cores on mainstream desktop CPUs? 10 years? WTF?
why aren't we at 8 or 32 or 64 cores.... not enough parallelism in "normal" apps and games? chicken & egg?
(i know about xeons and knights landing, my question is about mainstream desktop systems)
>>56385710
8 core have been mainstream for 5 years.
>>56385710
>why aren't we at 8 or 32 or 64 cores.... not enough parallelism in "normal" apps and games? chicken & egg?
Some things simply can't be parallelized, and most consumer workloads simply don't need it. More cores won't improve web browsing, video playback, facebook messenger, or sending emails.
Intel's Coffee Lake in 2018 allegedly will make 6 cores mainstream, along with eDRAM equipped Iris Pro. Though this could be a special one off SKU for OEMs.
Lazy devs, companies not willing to invest time and money for parallelism in their programs, and Intel being Jews.
try and beat me boys, been running without a fan for more than 8 months

W-what?

pics of the laptop or gtfo
Just got myself a nice little chromebook. The OS is taking some getting used to but I was wondering what some /g/ suggested apps/add-ons are?
Also I hear you can load android apps onto this thing. Is that hard or does it just work?
>>56385570
Replace that shit with ChromiumOS, OP
It is literally ChromeOS, but FOSS. And you can access the package manager like a normal linux distro. (in this case it's portage, gentoo's amazing package manager)
>>56385589
FOSS?
Also I'll look into it

How far behind x86 is ARM in terms of general performance?
>>56385514
general performance hasn't changed in 10 years. so zero.
>>56385514
ARM is not behind in performance, it is behind in efficiency
The main reason x86 id still preferred over ARM in bigger systems is because x86 processors keep using less power while also having more computational capabilities by being able to shrink the DIE size remarkably over time (mainly thanks to Intel)
>>56385630
What? Aren't arm processor used in smartphones because of the opposite reason?
