Budget tech is such a meme. You can only buy shit for little money, that's it. It's demotivational, people should aspire to buy good. By good I don't mean that everyone should be using HD600s but anything below an ATH-M50X is shit and holy fuck those awful microphones... A Blue Snowball runs you like $45, even less if you buy used. Just get that.

That's like $150 or less for something that you don't have to buy again when you have money, and if you can't afford to have $150 peripherals you need to prioritize your shit.

So /g/ exactly a year ago I disassembled my computer and left everything separately.

I'm working atm and I'll only be back home (and rebuild everything) in a couple of months.

Is it safe to assume my SSD is dead?
Same goes for my hard drive.

Keep in mind they are not dusty or exposed to any harmful conditions.

Windows is much faster and more stable than XFCE, LXDE, Openbox, or even just i3wm. I don't give a shit about your 300mb less used RAM or your 5% less CPU while idling. Windows much fucking faster and more responsive. There is no combination of compositor+window manager that has no screen tearing, good performance, and is stable. Every compositor is incapable of doing what Windows achieves easily. I either get screen tearing, or I use a GLX backend and get massive slowdown so dragging around Windows is slow as shit because the redraw speed drops, and even with a GLX backend I still get some screen tearing. Right now I use no compositor on Xfce to minimize screen tearing, but I still get window drag lag and all the window manager is dogshit. The only theme that doesn't look/behave utterly retarded has window borders that are small as fuck and impossible to resize the window with the mouse because of it. They make it SO FUCKING COMPLICATED to create Window manager and GTK themes that any time I download theme online other than the default one it's riddled with buggy inconsistencies or shit like menus are unreadable because the person who created it doesn't know the ins and outs of the GTK library because apparently that's what is needed to make a functional fucking theme. PLEASE don't give me the 'freedom to customize' if it's really just the freedom to break all my shit. It isn't only themes that are utterly SHITFUCKED, it's also the plugin system for every DE I've ever used. FUCK this uneeded fucking BULLSHIT that tries to be pluggable and hypermodular but just ends up being so impossible to maintain that it's own developers can't even write cohesive plugins for their own panel let alone anyone who wants to contribute. Windows has it right offering a dumbed down, non-offensive environment with no customization, but it fucking works! Fuck this fucking dogshit! And fuck you fags who don't like Wayland which is the only shot at improving all this broken fucking shit!

Does anyone have one of these things?
Is there any way it can make phone calls for you?
I'd prefer it to be 'Okay google, call <address book contact name>' and it dials it from my phone and acts as a speaker phone.
Can it even initiate a voice call on my phone?

Sadly, that's probably not a feature yet of Amazon Echo / Alexa. What about the Google Home one?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I have one.
I bet its possible through the IFTTT app
There is an alexa skill for "find my phone", that calls your phone, it just rings it though and there is an automated message

I doubt you could make it as easy to use as a speakerphone as you want though, maybe if you're good at programming. I think you can freely make alexa skills if you have the know-how

No idea. The dot is shit in general and half the time requires me to legit scream at it. Its a semi decent bluetooth reciever for my speakers at least.
>>
>>58049486
Both of them are essentially glorified Bluetooth speakers.

>you already have speakers
Get one of the new Chromecast receivers. They're full on botnet, but that makes them cheap and plentiful.

>you don't have speakers or you don't want as much botnet
Something from Sonos. You're literally paying out of your ass but you're getting great home sound equipment with minimal botnet interaction (they follow a lot of Apple's philosophies, including the parts about your data and the cloud).

Can someone explain the internet to me?

I drew my basic understanding. I am trying to understand where "the Internet" really is. From what I understand, it's just a bunch of servers that route requests both ways (by destination IP). Who maintains these servers? Why isn't the internet peer-to-peer?

What role do the internet provider companies play? Is there role essentially to pull a wire between your house and them, and give you access to the main internet servers?

Where does DNS come into play? Is DNS just a thing so you could type in a pretty name? Do the internet companies do DNS or something else?

How does shttp protect you? As in, how does the server know what the fuck your encrypted message mean?

Feel free to answer any individually.

>>
>>58049416

Let me ask this, are "providers" or "server owners" of the main routing servers that Comcast/Roadrunner/whatever send your shit to - who are they owned by? How do they make money?
>>
The implementation of the internet is actually very complicated.
It's far too detailed for a 4chan post.

Just notice the name "internet". "inter-network". As in, you're passing things between networks.
Your ISP is a network, which you are connected to. The website or whatever your visiting is on a network.
Your packet will travel through your ISP's network (and possibly through several others) and then make it into the destination network.

>Who maintains these servers?
They're not servers. They're routers.
>Why isn't the internet peer-to-peer?
The internet actually IS peer-to-peer in a sense.
The networks themselves are peers to each other (sometimes).
>Is there role essentially to pull a wire between your house and them
Basically.
>Where does DNS come into play? Is DNS just a thing so you could type in a pretty name?
DNS just takes a human readable hostname, and translates it into an IP address, and possibly vice-versa.
>Do the internet companies do DNS or something else?
Yes, usually.
>How does shttp protect you?
https*. Yes, shit is encrypted.
>how does the server know what the fuck your encrypted message mean?
It's too complicated to describe in a mere 4chan post.

The internet is made up of the networks of the service providers, which provide access to private and business customers.
These service providers exchange the routes to their customers with each other via a protocol called BGP. Other networks than the service provider's then know that to reach your network, they need to send it to your service providers.
This exchange typically happens at Internet Exchange like DECIX in Frankfurt. The ISP rents a place in a rack there, puts a router in it and then makes contracts with other ISPs for BGP peering and connecting them with cables..

Depends what its policies are.

If its goal is to make human life better, then we might survive, but even then it can kill us all.

Remember that game Google's AI played and found the best strategy to win the game is to not play it? What if an AI decides the best way to improve human life is to kill it?

I "need" to buy a new monitor "for work" before the end of the year and am looking at 1440p144Hz. Is G-Sync really that useful at such a high refresh rate? At 60 Hz (w/ V-Sync), frames could be delayed over 16ms, but at 144 Hz, the max delay would be 6.9ms. Is such a small amount of time perceptible?
35 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Yes, framerates over 60Hz are noticeable.
However, G-Sync is just there to lock you into novidia's products.
>>
>>58049239
You've completely missed the point of the question. I'm not asking if a 144Hz monitor is worth it over 60Hz. I'm not asking if G-Sync is better or worse than Freesync. I'm not asking if I should build a rig to get more than 60 fps.

I'm asking does G-Sync make a noticeable and worthwhile difference over plain old V-Sync when the monitor refreshes at 144Hz.
>>
>>58049312
Yes g-sync is better than v sync. Less frame delay.
