/hpg/, I'm confused.
I don't get how """""""7.1""""""""" surround works for vidya and headphones. Like, the game gives your drivers 2 outputs. How the fuck does the 7.1 software/driver determine what is in front/back/up/down?

It seems pointless to me. If the game itself gives virtual surround then you don't need drivers, and if it doesn't, then the software has no way of determining direction other than left/right, right? The surround driver doesn't magically step between the game's audio engine and it's outputs, right?

The only real circumstance where I can kind of see it working is if the game has an option for proper 7.1 [as in proper 7 channel home theater set up] output, but not virtual surround, which is fucking stupid.

Respectfully requesting the webm of the fat autist plugging headphones into a phone and listens to something while he squirms in pain. I will return the favor please.
>>
>>58027186
It's probably the jack, which is an insanely easy fix.

All you need is a 3.5 or 6.3 [your choice] jack, a soldering iron, and like 5 minutes of time.

Cut the cable, strip the wires, burn off any enamel if there is any. Solder on the new jack, and crimp them down with some needlenose. Attach sleeve. EZ.

You might want to get some heatshrink to if you want it to look noice.
>>
>>58025424
You know only have 2 ears? Which literally means sound is only 2.0 so to say.

It works by providing louder sound to one ear and lower sound to the other in the other direction to simulate the direction, like sound would do to you in real life.

It's not the jack. The problem is right where the cable splits into two. The two cables have been bent too many times exiting that piece and are falling apart.
>>
>>58027564
I think Grados will repair it for you.

Now, where do I cop the duck earpads?
>>
>>58027564
Oh. Not quite as easy of a fix, but is still entirely do-able. You can either try and make your own splitter, or you can just buy a splitter headphone cable, the type you can get for HE 400i and HD 600's, and cut the tips off, and resolder them onto the grados cable.
You'll want stress relief crimp things and probably some heatshrink.

You can often buy IEM's themselves for cheaper than an actual cable, and just salvage the cable from them.
Making the splitter yourself is harder but would be cheaper.

>>58027584
Think you have to make them yourself. I think they're dish scrubber pads in the shape of ducks that someone cut into grado cups.

>>
>>58027752
Except you're wrong. Your ears aren't two microphones on two exactly flat planes. You can hear when shit is infront or behind. You can't do that with headphones without virtual surround.

What you replied had no relevance to what I even posted in the first place. Stop trying to be smart. You're clearly a dumb cunt.
>>
>>58027782
But you can you dumbfuck yourself, ever hear of binaural recordings? Literally obliterates dolby atmos levels of performance and provides almost real life sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA

Now please fuck off since youre literally too dumb to understand how headphones work
>>
>>58027777
I'm not talking about """"""""7.1"""""" headphones. I know they're useless shit.

But just the actual software/drivers aren't. They serve a purpose if they're actually implemented. I think to sum it up is why does everyone fawn over that shit when only like 4 games in existence actually can use it. Most games that offer proper 7.1 channel support also offer proper virtual surround.

>>
>>58027866
>ARE YOU FUCKING DENSE THERE IS NO WAY THAT VIDYAGAMES COULD SIMULATE 2 MICROPHONES AND THE DAMPENING OF THE HEAD.
Nobody is arguing that point. Current virtual surround for vidya isn't even attempting to mimic binural. Virtual surround is about locational imaging and distance. Binural is going for realism.

>HOW COULD THEY?
Programming, it's been done.

>ITS NOT LIKE THEY MAKE SOUND MOVE IN 3D SPACE OR ANYTHING ALREADY
They can, but that again isn't what current virtual surround does for the most part. Proper 3D sound is actually /more/ confusing for the human ear than simulated 3D sound.

Stop going off topic, or stop replying. Please.

Is there a possibility for my K712 having been modified or faulty or something like that? I bought them new form thomann and the reason I'm asking this is for the overwhelming ammounts of bass that this produces. People say open backs can't produce enough bass like closed back but this thing goes all the way to 30hz or even less and manages to rumble my hears. I know there's a bass mod for the K700s line, I wonder if mine has that sticker removed.

I didn't like the 702s too much for the lack of bass and slightly sibilant highs on some tracks. When I returned them for the 712 I was expecting a small 3db increase in general bass (like advertised), instead this feels like 10db increase

So my dad got me a pair of headphones for christmas and I was asking for a microphone but the guy in the store told him they don't sell stand alone mics anymore.
The headphones were supercheap and terrible on everything, hi res audio sounds better on my desktop speakers than on the headphones and the mic (the thing I wanted) makes everything sound like it was recorded through a carboard tube.

I'm extreamly dissapointed but I don't want to tell my dad because he'll get angry

recable is stupid easy, the housing breaks into 3 pieces and the wires can by unsoldered from the driver. It's so easy you should spend money on decent cabling and a jack to really pimp them out.

Lemme explain it for you.

All K7 series use the same driver, but the following ones are identical to each other:

K701 = K702 = Q701

K702 Anniversary Edition = K712 = K7XX

The differences between the latter and the former are that the latter has memory foam pads which allows for a better seal on the head, and it has been modified internally to produce a greater bass output.

The former ones are known for not sealing too well on some listeners hence why some say they've got no bass.

In my opinion, something ideal would be the K702 with the memory pads and WITHOUT the internal modification that exists on the latter models.

Thought it was the sound card. Got a DAC. Still happening. Using unbalanced RCA. This only happens on the monitors and not the headphones that came from the same sound card and DAC. I also have a mixer that goes to the monitors that uses balanced cables and there's no whine. I'm thinking I need to use balanced cables on my DAC? This shit has followed me around forever and the only thing that hasn't changed is the fact that I use RCA to the monitors.

Depends on your head size and preferences. Sennheisers are generally very uncomfortable for larger heads. AKGs are pretty light and don't clamp much but the band can be annoying. X2 had amazing pads and the band is very comfortable but it might clamp a bit too much on larger heads, nowhere as bad as Sennheisers though, they're also kinda heavy.

Is it worth getting an 80-Ohm version or is there a noticeable difference in quality?

>>58038244
990s are on sale for like $130, is it worth paying $40 more for 770s?

880s are like brown mechanical switches.
If you have something that tries to get the best of both worlds (closed & open), you get the best of none

well the 770 are closed, the 990 could be a little extreme for you since the highs are harsh for a lot of people that have tried them

Yeah that. They're better than the wool, though it depends on the headphone mostly.

Wool is better for headphones with bad headband surfaces.
The actual removable padding is better for headphones with very little padding, or just shit padding in general. It's the same sort of pad that beyerdynamic headphones use.

It's not coil whine. It's either 'dirty' USB power, or your entire house's power is shit. Determine which, and then get one of those dumb 'cleaner/purifier' things. They work but theyre overpriced.

If you compare ones in the same price bracket, I'm pretty sure a dac/amp would always be better, unless you're solely interested in outputs.

Yes. Less comfortable than HD 600's but that low end is moist.
>>
>>58039195
Not the original guy but Ive heard some people say the mids are recessed and others say they are bright, and some say its neutral. Whats the real answer?
>>
>>58039141
Not him, but for price to performance, DAC/Amps [either combo, or a stack/pairing] will generally outperform a typical soundcard in terms of audio out.

Hell, you could get a Fulla 2 and any sub $100 interface for less than a STX II, if all you need is audio out, and microphone control. It'd sound better.

Soundcards are really only relegated to home theater PC use nowdays.
>>
>>58039214
They're pretty damn neutral. HD 600's are ever so slightly brighter in the highs. 400i's low end extends a lot further. Other than that they're pretty fuckin identical.

People saying mids are reccessed are probably thinking of the HE-400, not the 400i.
I'd still personally take HE-400S's or the OG HE-400's over the 400i's, purely because because the rolled off low end of the 400i's just don't suit me, but it's up to you.
>>

So basically its an hd 600 with the 650 bass? Dam son maybe ill actually grab a pair next time they go on sale. Thanks lad
>>
>>58039320
I've heard some people describe it as a 600 that goes lower, and doesn't have rolled off treble.
>>
>>58039320
Not quite. Extension isn't the same as level. Extension is low it can go whilst still staying accurate. 400i's beat HD 600's on it.

>>
>>58040572
Well, you have to realize that all the brands dedicated to headphones mostly just reuse the same driver in different packages, only the frame's build and earpads change from model to model until you jump into the next price range. Just look at people "modding" their headphones to change sound signature, it's the same thing.

Philips is a mainstream brand and headphones is only a minuscule part of their business so they don't make as many models, there's a flagship open, flagship closed, portable, earbuds and the poorfag model which would be SHP9500.
They're good because of competition (not catering to audiophiles but normies) and because it's often cheaper to just have a few good models than a dozen copies in different colors. Old and established brands like Sennheiser can get away with absolute dogshit build quality even in their midrange because people will buy them anyway, the same goes for garbage like Beats but for normie reasons.

Back to the topic, they really don't compare to HD600, they're just very good for the price. Build quality and comfort are better though.

Yes and no.
In this case the in-ear Bose ANC is tuned to cancel out a narrow range of frequencies in the upper bass. It does that range better than anything else.
The passives can block out more sound than the Bose in-ears overall.

Etys besides the ER-4 don't have a detachable cable. The Shure does, which is a serious advantage for it.
I don't recall SE215 having too many protective filters by default, besides the ones installed on the Shure foams.

Shure in-ears are hard to insert deep and subject to occlusion effect, Etymotics have lousy cable noise.
You can work your way around either problem, but they both have some issues.

Any good M50x replacement earpads?
What about velour pads, what advantage and disadvantages do they have?
>>
>>58044610
really? ive never head of that one is there any particular reason for it over the e10k?
>>
>>58044582
The e10k is very good and will cause permanent damage to your hears on the 598 if you crank it all up
>>
>>58044610
>more expensive
>less features
really? Why is it better?
do most of you guys prefer how it looks or something?

I also think the e10k gets an edge because it's reasonably portable
that huge knob on the top looks like suffering if you want to carry the fullashit in your pocket
>>
>>58044641
The potentiometer controls both the headphone out and the line out if you want to connect powered speakers.
The DAC used is the same chip on the more expensive schiit equipment
The amp is slightly more powerful than the e10k

I'd personaly just get it to control both the speakers and the headphones
>>
>>58044659
I don't use speakers as the walls in my apartment aren't particularly thick but if the build quality is higher ill probably get it. could someone that has both chime in possibly?
>>
>>58043237
Got my balances cables. No more noise using the DAC. Holy shit finally. This problem has followed me for years across multiple devices. I never thought it was because of this.

I'm the guy who swapped his 712's for 600's and they're perfect to me besides the bass which could be a tad stronger although it was much more natural sounding than the sloppy 712 bass. I've also tried out the 650's and I could barely hear a difference in terms of bass. All I know is that the overall sound signature wasn't as good as the 600's. They're the best headphones I've ever tried. I don't even look at headphones anymore and I barely come here now for the same reason.
>>
What a a good DAC for under 250? I use X2s so power isn't really a concern. I just need a mic and 3.5 in. I like house and classic rock and some vidya like csgo sometimes
>>
>>58044582
e10k my dude. I use it with my hd600's. It will be monstrous with your 598's.
>>
>>58044833
thanks for the advice, how do you like the 600's? have you used 598's how would you say they compare? I am thinking of upgrading and Im really big on vocal clarity/quality and senns seem to nail them.
>>
>>58044808
Since I fully agree with headroom on their measurements now that I've listened to the 712s, do you also agree that the 650s treble is too laid back? The bass seems to be pretty good, just need to increase the sub bass on an EQ. The 600s seem to have bass similar to the 702s that i owned previously and found them a bit too weak in that department.
>>
>>58044351
The ignorant and loud enthusiasts are a big problem. They form an echo chamber of opinions and they are simultaneously the people who many buyers look for advice. Standards are low, manufacturers get away with releasing absolutely terrible gear as there's always a group of apologists among the consumers to defend whatever kind of garbage gets released. There's plenty of science behind good sound but such a vast amount of "audiophiles" choose not to listen or believe it, often because it contradicts whatever they have experienced in conditions which leave a lot of room for various kind of cognitive biases. There are very little standards to uphold, very little limitations in what you can market and only a few places where you can get reliable information about many audio products. Specs are inconclusive, reviewers do not measure the gear and when you can trust neither, you are purchasing products blind and worsening the problem.
>>
>>58044424
It's not an upgrade IMO.

But I'm one of the HD600 memers on here.

IEMs with either active noise cancelling or a nice isolating/passive setup.
>Comfort level
They're IEMs, so hopefully a nice snug fit.
>Sound signature
Neutral, clear sound desired.

Currently looking at these:

Etymotic MC5s - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003S3RFIQ

And these 2:
ATH-ANC33iS - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00CL3TAOQ/
ATH-ANC23 - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004K09H32/

But what I'm questioning about the Audio Technicas is... what's the difference between the two? The only thing I can find is that the ANC23 has a Y-Cable setup, and I think no mic/device button, but it's somehow more expensive?

Thanks for any suggestions. Something I can get in the next week would be best.

Under a ideal seal K702 has more bass than HD600 but the K702's seal varies a lot, I think the HD600 bass response is adequate, it does lack some deep sub-bass but music doesn't sound thin because of it. It has more bass than my studio monitors which sound a bit thinner in comparison because the HD600 is a bit emphasized at around 100Hz. The HD600 and HD650 have the same bass response, it's just that the HD650 has less upper midrange and treble response so it appears as it has less bass, and that's correct depending on how you level the frequency response measurements.

Hell, these arrive before christmas too. Thing is, why wouldn't I get the ATH's, which actually have active noise cancelling? Can I return the Etymotics if I've used them?
>>
>>58045097
Etymotic has the best passive noise isolation in the industry and they make the most neutral IEMs.

The MK5 is extremely neutral.

Don't know about the ATs, they might have a typical consumer oriented sound.

I can only compare anything active based to the Sony MDR-NC13s I have, only issue is this is the 3rd damn pair of them. The biggest problem with these Sony's is that the wire connection frays between the headphones and the noise-cancelling unit, and it's a bitch to get it working again.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Still not sure if they can be returned on Amazon if I don't like them? Comes out to just under 100$ with 2-day shipping, arriving the 21st.

Also curious, some people comment on the uncomfortable eartips, or something about them filling in uncomfortably. What's up with that?
>>
>>58045243
I live in the US. Don't know about Canada but I can return almost anything that I've bought on amazon.

The Etymotics go in a bit deeper than your average IEM, it comes with a variety of tips in the box. If you take your time and try them all, you will find one that suits you. There's also aftermarket tips but I think the included sets are enough. If you earcanals are seriously odd shaped I think they'll be an issue.

>>

Never used 598's before but like I said to the other guy, after buying the 600's I never look at headphone stuff anymore besides rarely coming here to give casual advice mostly.

Vocals and general sound effects sound literally perfect, the highs aren't harsh at all and the overall sound is amazing but maybe with a very slight warmth (compared to the 702's at least for example)

They're my end game headphone. The only downside to them is the lack of nigga bass if you care about that and the headband is a bit plasticky. However it won't snap unless you stretch to like 3 times the width of your head like a retard. Just put them on a headrest and nothing will happen to them.
>>

>>
>>58044934

I'm the guy that you're talking to and yes I'd say the treble and detail are slightly worse on the 650 compared to the 600, they're also a touch warmer and don't sound as nice overall.

The other guy who replied to you said this

>Under a ideal seal K702 has more bass than HD600

This is bullshit, I started out with the 702 and they're amazing headphones when it comes to detail and soundstage but the bass was very short and didn't extend at all. The 600 bass isn't what you'd call strong but it has a decent extension to it and combined with the slight warmth overall (though less warm than the 650) it makes the 600 the perfect headphone imo. It's been the top dog for so long for a reason, without spending thousands at least. And we both know that's fucking retarded.
>>
>>58045914
I don't know what you mean, do you mean an EQ lol? if so yes. They don't need much more though.

The Realiser falls into its own niche, one that it does well. As nice as it is at doing that, I don't want it.
You also need to keep in mind that the Realiser A8 has cost more than a lot of the popular products bandied around by headphone aficionados.

>closed-form time and frequency-domain optimized multibit filter.
This isn't the most outrageous thing DAC vendors have claimed. Not by a long shot.
At least it refers to something that can be tested and is falsifiable.
>>
>>58045642
>muh closed-form time and frequency-domain optimized multibit filter
Yeah that's a good example of something that a manufacturer hyped up and people took their word for it, mostly Moffat's claims and the followers. While Moffat knows his electronics he doesn't seem to understand human perception and how these two relate, or in this case, do not relate. It didn't stop many people from believing it without an ounce of skepticism, even if they understood even less about the filter or the qualities of sound it was supposedly altering. It sure is easy to ride with a title when the enthusiasts are dumber than you.

I find it frustrating and boring to read almost any audio forums, articles or subreddits when a large amount of posts is part of this circlejerk among audiophiles giving awful advice, empty claims and nonsensical descriptions of sound based on nothing but listening impressions. It's like nobody actually wants to know but are content with answers which adhere with their experience, kind of a comfort zone which is getting nowhere. Worse yet is when these aspects of sound are then tied into some pseudo-scientific explanations in order to make it more believable when there's peer-reviewed studies on the subject already available. I also do not fathom the concept of "hunting the perfect sound" when you have no goal and your only point of reference is an aging memory.

I can't think of a comparison either. In so many technology related interests and hobbies the enthusiasts are often quite knowledgeable about the subject or at the very least aren't swayed by words or someone's experience alone. I don't imagine a videophile would buy a projector with no published performance data or install it without calibration.

I like the LS-160s, surprisingly. I thought that I would hate them, and they actually work great (even though they glitch on PC, but that is because they are not made for PC), but I wish I could get more bass. I don't always listen to D&B, so they're fine for the most part, but what other headphones in the $100-200 range are great at handling heavy bass?

This is more of my thoughts on the matter, but I think you're going about this in the wrong way. These forums generally exist for consumer product discussion. You can't really demand that these people know the subject deeply.

>memories of dumber things claimed?
I was going to suggest something about the transient response of DSD or why we didn't put in the reconstruction filter.

Thinking it over, most nonsense about digital comes down to
-Sampling theorem
-Naive ideas about the Fourier transform
-Not understanding properties of the DFT
-Definition/jargon confusion
And combinations of the above.
