Hello /diy/. What's the best way to transport a rigid 2' x 4' solar panel weighing about 15 lbs on foot for a long distance, while also wearing a large backpack? After trying in vain to rig up a mediocre rope harness, I come to you for help.

Given the fragility of the solar panel, it's especially important that it not be allowed to bump against me as I'm walking. I basically need a system that holds it snugly.

Is this doable or am I looking at those overpriced folding units?

Get a person to hold the other end like its a strecher. If it is really that far then you can make some handles.

If you dont have one near by you can usualy rent on for less then $10/hour.

Just put it between two pieces of ply and put some rubber wheels on.

Im planning on making a rowboat, probably this month but im not really sure. Has anybody done this before and if so whats the best way to go about this. I don't want to be cheap and go the stitch and glue method. Probably gonna use epoxy and fiberglass. If its not too much trouble a step by step process on how you guys did yours if you have.

It has been said that a lousy boat builder makes an excellent carpenter.
Meaning that building boats can be tricky. You need to define first what kind of boat you are looking for. Flat bottomed or V, for how many and so on. Also if you haven't gone shit like this before and planning to build it in the evenings and weekends then your timetable is overly optimistic.
Boats are tricky. Tell something about your criteria, otherwise it's a no go.
I happen to have two boat renovation projects that are never going to finish so you can pick them up. Unfortunately you live too far away...

Flat-bottomed and for 3 people. I haven't done shit like this before and I am planning to build it when im free. Between work and exercising.

I also live in NJ.

What item would you use to fasten A and B (both 1/4" thick aluminium) to one another? I'm thinking of something like a 90° angle bracket BUT with holes countersunk the other way (see pic in next post)

Can't seem to find anything that matches this description, and I've been looking all day. Does such a product exist? If not, what product should I be using instead?

TL;DR version: I have 4 aluminum hollow square tubes, welded into a hollow rectangle. I have plates cut out of the side face (B in pic) so I can access the motors and electronics on the inside (should happen very rarely). The fastener just has to hold the plate in place for long periods of time without rattling.

Pic related is the closest I've gotten... but I can't help that think because the holes are countersunk the wrong way, I'm looking at the wrong product. We want the right tool for the right job, yes?
>>
>>1093172
That just goes on the inside of a right angle. You want one to go on the outside then.

I just got a model CECHA01 Playstation 3. From what I can tell, the lifespan of these things are really short due to the cheap lead-free solder cracking from repeated exposure to high temps and then cooling down again. Would it be a better idea just leaving the console on indefinitely so the system never cools completely? Or is using the machine at all just going to wear down the joints anyway? Do PS3s even break down as much as people say they do?

Not completely sure if this is the same one I had, but the shape is identical. Yes, it did eventually give me the "yellow light" making it unusable. My dad opened it up and gave it a once over with a heatgun and it seemed to temporarily fix it. Not sure what was happening specifically. Haven't touched it since.
>>
>>1092626
Yeah sounds like a great idea why not just leave it in the oven too.
It makes more heat under load doing intensive operations so there will still be thermal cycling.
I would suggest you have a look to see if anyone has come up with any mods to keep it cool, replacing the fan or drilling holes I guess, Peltier cooler or some shit.

Maybe something as simple as putting it on its side or packing the feet to let more shit circulate around it, giving it a good dust maybe.

I have these really old boots I haven't worn in a while. The rubber soles have become too hard. It is loud whenever I walk in them. Google says that I need to remove the whole sole and replace it. I was wondering if there was an easier way to soften the soles. Are there chemicals that I can use to make the soles softer?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Rubber is one of those materials that when it has deteriorated. That's pretty much it, without a recycling process.
>>
That rubber has gone through a chemical reaction of oxidizing and cross linking the polymer chains losing it's pliability permanently.

So basically you can't do anything about the hard soles beside replace them.

They would charge reliable and safely, you're thinking of lipo's in series. The only downside is that they will charge at half speed, but that probably isn't an issue.

I got some plastic-cloth, nylon maybe, ribbon to make a watch band. I was told to cut it with heated scissors or some shit to prevent fraying.

How do? How can I get the scissors hot enough to do the job? I mean if I stuck them in the oven or some shit the handle will melt and I wont be able to hold them even.

A candle wont heat them evenly will it?

You can cut it like normal, then use a lighter to tidy up the ends. The heat will make any frayed pieces shrivel up for a nice clean look.

This.

Hi, /diy/. This is a misfit shine. Basically a knock off fitbit. This watch is a fitness tracker that can detect when you're asleep and when you're awake. I want to build a coffee maker that'll start when I wake up as the watch indicates. I'll send the data to my phone then to a pi zero where it'll begin the coffee process. I'm having trouble figuring out how to go about scraping the data off the watch to the pi, you see. Could you point me in the right direction?
tl;dr How to scrape data off app to be used by another?

ifttt, but I think the app for that thing is probably slow to update and shitty enough that you'll have to run it through another app to get something ifttt will be able to read, rending this whole thing useless.

/diy/,

I want to be able to plug my electric guitar into the mic input of my laptop.

Now I've looked around and the way that I understand it is that the guitar is a high impedance input which doesn't work well with the mic input.

So I'll either need an active DI Box but I haven't seen a simple schematic for that.

I have found however a preamp schematic which outputs at line-level.

Can I just use the preamp schematic and add a voltage divider at the output (pad) so that the line-level output becomes mic-level?

This is all new to me but I'm willing to learn.

You can try a simple aop preamp. Quite easy to do, It s linear enough
>>
>>1092065
This is a good page.
Impedance matching isn't a huge deal for audio.
http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/6846/how-important-is-impedance-matching-in-audio-applications

A preamp sounds like a good idea. A Mic In isn't designed to amplify a guitar and would probably be lousy at it
>>
I used to do this but I plugged my guitar into my amp, then ran a line from my amps headphone jack into my laptops mic input. So if you have an amp already it should work. Now I just use a Tascam interface

is there any good alternative to a multitool?

Wear a dual mag pouch and carry multitool plus othertool. I carry a Leatherman 300 and a Pelican flashlight (plastic body doesn't short electrical connections when working on vehicles) but you can fit many things in mag pouches.

I need to get a house at some point in the future. I could probably afford a 200k house maybe a bit more. I live in MD near DC. Most houses are around 300k min here (and anywhere reasonably nearby).

Is it reasonable to assume that I could buy a plot of land (100k or so) and build a house on it for 100k (doing some work myself) and it would be better than the 50 year old or whatever shit shacks here?
29 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
You could, but adding on to your property adds value, then you get fucked in taxes. It would eventually cost more to do it this way.
>>
>>1091701
Wow, you must be making next to nothing. Even I was able to swing 220k making $13 an hour straight out of college a few years ago.

100k for land can be a big if. In my town, 100k would get you 1/10th of an acre in a bad neighborhood. I have no clue what land prices are where you live but it's easy enough to look. Check online. Make sure it has utility hook-ups. Those alone can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. As for a house for under 100k, sure. The thing you have to understand though is that square footage is the cheapest thing to add to a home. So a home that costs 140k could have twice the square footage of a home that costs 100k, if that is all you are adding.

Maybe consider getting a lot on a corner or with alley access and building a two story garage/1 bedroom apartment. Live in that shit while you save up money and then build the house when you have the cash. It's generally fairly easy to dupe the permitting board but just telling them you started construction on the apartment and then ran out of money for the main house and that you will build it later.
>>
>>1091715

This is why you buy a a good hunk of land. Then build a tiny little shack. get it assessed for taxes then dig... and dig. and dig some more. until the shack is nothing more then the foyer to the ultimate man cave / rape dungeon.

land is important though. you will need somewhere to dump the dirt.
