I'm tired of having lots of mismatched containers.
Should I just use "chinese food containers" to store almost everything?

pic unrelated

Should be related, though - that's the IKEA set of containers, like $3 for the whole lot here.
Acquire some. Toss out all the mismatched crap.

will they still sell them in 10 years? can i get them with clear lids?

Hit up the local kitchen/cook/janitorial supply store, they'll have all kinds of take out poly containers and lids for cheap.
Provided you buy them in large numbers.

Plastic is bad, especial if you microwave it. Get old Pyrex containers. Microwave/oven/fridge/freezer safe, won't leech shit in your food, classy as fuck and will last forever. They made a million styles tool. I've picked up tons at estate sales and thrift stores. Even eBay sometimes has decent prices.
Only has two cons: its glass, so it can break, and the lids don't have an airtight seal. If you need it to last more than a few days then just put some plastic wrap over it (but make sure it doesn't touch the food).

If getting originals is too much hassle then you can pick up a modern version. Much less classy but their lids seal (plastic, don't let it touch your food and not oven safe) and is probably cheaper. This is a Pyrex set but others make them too.

Lids crack like a motherfucker. Not a wise investment if looking for longevity ... which I believe the OP is with his "10 years later" comment.

Plastic made for microwaves shouldn't have this issue.
Stuff not made for microwaves should last a couple of nukings before leeching anything.

even brand new glass containers are cheap as fuck

Soda lime glass is cheap. Borosilicate glass is not. You want the latter if you want to warm up stuff or cook in them using the oven. If you just plan on using a microwave or storage only, yeah, get whatever.

The new non-BPA lids crack real easy.

I'm not just after kitchen containers. I want containers for my whole house, eg the garage, the bathroom, whatever.
But I might get different containers for cooking.

Agreed.

I use Akro-Mils dividable containers for nearly everything. They are made to handle the abuse of warehouse/conveyor use - far tougher than any other plastic container.
I use bins for tools that I access often and smaller drawer units for things like bolts/electronics.
