okay so my wife has a kia soul, it has a usb charging port in the dash and has a bluetooth linkable stereo. both my wife and I play music from our phones over bluetooth to the radio since the area we're in has nothing worth listening to on the normal airwaves... ideally I'd like to charge my phone from the usb port, however whenever I plug it in the car detects it and for some reason treats it like an ipod and starts playing music off of it even when it's connected via bluetooth to her phone. she usually charges her phone with a usb plug in the lighter plug. If it's too impractical I'll just buy a splitter for that, but I was wondering if I could open up the iphone charging cable and cut the data lines leaving the power, neutral, and (assuming here I don't know what they actually have) ground lines.... the idea being that then the phone gets power but doesn't try to connect to the cars radio via the cable... I have wire cutters, heat shrink tubing, electrical tape, and a few extra iphone cords so I figured I'd ask here if anyone knew if this was possible or not, or should I just wast the 10$ on a usb splitter and run it all off the lighter socket?

thx in advance for any advice,

I have the iphone 6 model with the smaller connector vs the older larger one.

USB is four wires, +5v, ground, data+, and data-
Just google charge only USB. USB to iphone will be the same thing but with the wires going to the respective pins on the iphone connector.
>>
>>1090757
>>1090764
alternatively just play music from the one plugged in through USB and charge the other one in the lighter?
>>
>>1090765
it does handsfree phone calls through bluetooth which it for whatever reason won't do through the usb... otherwise i'd be game for this.

>>1090764
thanks, will look it up, was a bit fixated on the iphone plug end, but your right, the usb standard should be the same for both regardless of whats on the other end. used to working with house sized electrical stuff, I don't have a lot of experience on computer sized stuff.

Defrosted my freezer today because the fucking thing keeps icing up. Took the back off to speed up the thawing, saw the expansion valve looking like this. I'm not familiar with freezers, is this normal? If not, is it fucked, a threat, or just the one part that will need replacing?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Looks fine. Not hazardous even in case of breakdown. Freezing over is usually caused by faulty seals leaking moist air into the dry freezer, causing dew where the two fronts meet. Clean/massage/replace the rubber seal.
>>
>>1090465
Thanks anon. I got spooked by the burnt look, but searching online turned up nothing.

I think you're right about the moisture, the ice forms at the bottom of the freezer, but even if I remove it, it just grows in the back and clogs up the vents until the fridge stops working. Will try sorting out the seals, hopefully that will stop the problem.
>>
That's an accumulator not an expansion valve... the tiny tube that coils around it is a capillary tube and acts as the metering device... the accumulator is on the end of the evaporator and basically is there to ensure that you don't get any liquid refrigerant going back to the compressor.... it's all braised together at the factory and since you aren't likely to see it they don't bother themselves with cleaning it up... anyway what did the frost buildup look like? If it was all over the evaporator and thick then you have a defrost problem.. if it was a ball of ice mostly around the point where the cap tube goes into the evaporator then you have a sealed system issue like a leak or poor compression... if it was on the front of the evaporator cover and in the cabinet then it was probably a moisture issue... and if you hold the door switch shut and the fan doesn't turn on while the compressor is running then that will build frost across the top of the evaporator...

So the previous owner of my bmw installed foglights, but did a half ass job. The system worked when he ran a cheap 12v toggle switch which i wanted to replace before cleaning up all the wiring and whatnot. I got a better toggle switch, but it is rated at 14v 21a (ignore picture im tired.) When i hooked everything up the fog lights wouldn't turn on. A switch rated for higher power can't be a problem? I tried playing around with the leads on the switch but still no light.

>>
>>1090163
There's not really any way to tell from this crappy drawing.
>>
>>1090163
The current for the lights doesn't go through the switch, only the current to operate the relay which is the whole point, the relay uses much less current so the switch doesn't have to be huge.

The rating of the switch is not the problem, if it was it would be all hot smelly and melted.
You fucked up somewhere else.
You need either a multimeter or to post pics
>>
>>1090181
This. Will try and find my shitty air horse wiring diagram. Should be samesame. Replace horn switch with togle. And replace compressor with fog lights.

Not sure why my chin shit switches ground but hot wire is more common

>>

Sure, if you're okay with drilling in it...

At any rate use a wire or string between two D-rings to be able to balance it. It will make hanging it easier as well, trust me: trying to get two D-rings to latch onto screws that might not even be level is a PITA.

Hello /diy/nosaurs. I have a landscape company where I do pretty little designs on photoshop and then me and some buddies install the concrete/paver patio, retaining wall, turf, or whatever else the client wanted. All basic shit really

>THE PROBLEM HERE IS

This client wants his backyard (slope) graded to accommodate two patios separated by retaining walls. I've NEVER GRADED something so complicated much less do I know how to draw up blueprints illustrating said grading plan. I don't even know where to start.

>How to I learn about grading?

I can use a transit

>but how do i transfer that data into a design?

I realize I'm out of my depth here but I'm confident my guys and I can do the work once I generate a GRADING PLAN.

Thanks! Do you know any resources that would teach me how to use sketchup for this particular task? grading, basic beginner stuff, etc.
>>
>>1090014
hahahahahah look at the cute photoshop.

you need to learn to build a retaining wall, you can just google this

what the fuck do you mean graded, do you mean just make it flat, because you simply shift earths around

that the fuck do you mean by GRADING PLAN, you move shit around until it is flat

I am adding a joystick to a Sega Naomi arcade game, so there's no way to use any software adjustments.

Get mfg name and model number off heater.
Contact mfg for the propane jet for that heater. You will also need a regulator to drop propane (high pressure) to the proper input pressure for this unit at it's required flow rate.

G'night /diy/

I have tried to fix these Headphones with SuperGlue but it just doesn't work as the surface in which it needs to be applied is so fucking narrow that it doesn't do anything at all.

I'd really appreciate all you ideas about how can I fix this. I don't care if it doesn't look nice or anything, I only want to use it again.

>Just throw'em to the trash and buy a new one.

I can't, it was a gift from my mom, so you know, I want to keep it and at least try all the ways to fix it.

Thanks for you replies.

HALP!! what the fuck is this bug? I keep finding them all over my house. Well not ALL over, but many places such as the cabinets below the kitchen sink, the bathroom crawling on the toilet, and drowned in my dog's water bowl... so obviously they like water.

they move way too slow to be fleas and they are also about 5 times bigger. not bedbugs... want to exterminate these cheaply and knowing what they are first will help. Any ideas?

so Ive recently got into aquariums and water agitation is causing me a bit of a problem.
whilst it is necessary to break the surface tension in a tank to facilitate gas exchanges, i really dont like the normal methods.
air pumps and bubble stones are too loud. due to a tank being in my bedroom it is disturbing my sleep.
likewise with wave makers.
so i was thinking, what other ways might there to be to achieve this, without the need for noisy pumps and expensive equipment.
my current line of thinking is to use the old attempts at perpetual motion machines. while I am very aware of the laws of thermodynamics, im thinking they may hold the key disturbing the water while not disturbing my sleep.
im looking for /diy/'s input and advice from anyone who's tried something like this.
even just something thats powered by the natural heating of my radiator (like the drinking bird toy) could theoretically do the job but im open to suggestions

does anyone have any experience making one? I have a bunch of old CRT monitors so I was going to use that as the screen, but for the components do I just get normal computer parts and use Lakka? or should I use a raspberry pie and Lakka? Or should I go balls to the walls and learn how to make my own OS specifically for this project?

I used to game. reason for the CRT monitor was for streaming melee at 480p. Also if I'm gonna play retro games may as well use a retro monitor for authentic feel.
>>
>>1089493
why go the hard way?

just build a cabinet and put an old PC in it and just run emulators.

i'm thinking about making one, all i intend to use is an old working MoBo, GPU and PSU.

the only thing i would have to spend money on are hard drives, materials for the cabinet, a TV with hdmi input (low lag), buttons and sticks and the other little things i need to make it work.

i have an old 35 inch CRT TV that i could use for a monitor, but i would rather have a 40-50 inch 16x9 TV just so 4 adults playing actually have room to play and not be crammed together.

as long as its not hooked to the internet just use a pirated copy of windows, no need to worry about viruses that way.
