>buy cheapest, shitty brushes
>use once and throw away because you're too lazy to clean them.

I seriously hope you guys don't do this.

Water-based:
1. Run under hot tap until water runs through the bristles clear.
2. Fill a bowl or can with hot water, add a few drops of dish soap
3. Swish the brush around in soapy water
4. Rinse with hot water
5. Run a five tooth comb through the bristles starting as close to the ferrule as possible
6. Repeat steps 3-5
7. Soak up as much water as possible with a rag
8. Place brush back into original brush cover

Oil based:
1. Gather two glass jars (Jar 1 and Jar 2)
2. Add thinner to one of the glass jars about 1 cm deep
3. Place brush in jar with paint thinner; wait about half an hour
(Solvent will drive most of the paint/varnish into the jar via capillary action
4. Sqush brush against sides of the jar
5. Run a comb through the brush
6. Dump contains of that jar into Jar 2
7. Repeat steps 2-6 twice
8. Place brush back into original brush cover

What's your ritual?

There is definitely a place for cheap throwaway brushes.

I only have one large brush that I properly clean, pretty much the same method you said. Then I have a shitload of throwaways.

I also paint miniatures as a hobby, brush care is much more important there.
Brush soap and conditioner is a must to keep the bristles soft and to make the brush keep its shape.
Non synthetic bristles are a must too, synthetic brushes just shit out all the paint onto the mini as soon as you touch it.

So this is a general painting and brush thread then?
Neat.

My uses of cheap throw away brushes:
>Epoxy Resin
>polyurethane
>seasoning grills/smokers (season them at 450°F which burns the bristles)
> glues
> painting for longer periods than the drying time

Where do you buy electronics (ramps, drivers, steppers, lcd, endstops, cables, fans, thermistors, ... )? I was looking at ebay, but there is so much choice that I don't know what to choose. How do you choose electronics on ebay? Do you have trusted/preferred sellers or do you buy the cheapest stuff and then dispute it if it doesn't work?
I was also looking at bangood. It is less choice and as far as I heard it's "good" quality. But it is not as cheap.
I would rather buy one or two big packages (up to 150€ each), I know I would have to pay tax, But if I order 20 small packages and the CN22 form isn't properly filled out (usually it isn't), I would have to pay 5€ per package for customs. I would like to hear from other Euros, how do you deal with this?

I want to rig up a system in my house that triangulates my position within the house, but I don't think NFC receivers would be able to a)detect distance or b)pick up my cell phone across a room. What other things would work for this?

Trying to integrate video surveillance, smart electrical systems, and pretty much everything else with a plug into one system that activates/deactivates systems based on what room I'm in.

I suppose I should elaborate. I have easy access to a leica p20 laser scanner, so I'm thinking of creating a perfect virtual model of my home's interior. Then I install distance sensors throughout my house and add them to the virtual model in the corresponding locations. Write a program to triangulate position from sensor input, then govern behavior of integrated systems based on that location.

I need to get a new fridge in the near future. I'm having to defrost my current one every other month it seems.

I've been looking through the sears outlet warehouse and found some that I like. There's also one at home depot but I am unsure if I should get the protection plan also?

Any appliance advice?

I generally avoid extended insurance plans, just stick with the manufacturers warranty.
>>
>>1091947
is your current fridge a frost free model?

if so remove the inside paneling from the freezer compartment, they have heating coils inside that are on a timer. occasionally over time if under the panel builds up with ice, and becomes too much for the limited time the defrost cycle is on causing frost to build up in the freezer compartment. just use a hair dryer and remove all the ice build up from under the panels and it will be fine again fro years. also the timer itself can go, 3rd party can be $100, they are usually under the fridge near the back.

as for your warrenty, i used to be a appliance repair man for Frigidaire, for warranty work no matter what job it was they paid for 20 minutes of labor and one way of travel. the place i worked ended up eating a lot of the cost to fix it and scheduled repairs on when i had another repair in the area.

stay away from extended warranty, if there is a defect it will be apparent shortly after you use it, paying for years is a waste because 99% of the time nothing will break.

all manufacturers appliances break i've worked on them all, for washers and dryers i recommend whirlpool because they are easiest to take apart. stay away from "new" features because they get rushed into production. i remember GE's smart fridge fiasco, the PCB that controlled everything was shit and wasn't sealed well and corroded.

I want to make a device which allows lobsters and other oceanic crustaceans able to survive on dry land for longer. Would it be possible to devise something that holds a small amount of salt water near their gills while replenishing the oxygen though aeration or do they also excrete non-gaseous waste through their gills which would rapidly turn the water toxic?

but... why? i do not want crustacean overlords.
>>
>>1086559
Neat idea. As far as I know, as long as you supply fresh (Salt) water to the gills they should live, ignoring possible complications from the rest of their body being out of the water.

As a kid, I used to catch baby crabs about the size of a silver dollar and keep them alive in glasses of salt water.

Tell me the truth about electric baseboard heaters, they don't actually turn on unless you crank them up to max, right? I mean, I've tried putting them on low and medium settings and they don't even turn on and I'm freezing, they seem to only have two settings, high and very high, so when I actually turn it on, it becomes an inferno.

I thought it was just the old ones and I was too poor, but then I bought a brand new one and its the same shit, it doesn't actually turn on until you crank it up to max.

I spent two hours today looking online for baseboard heaters with good ratings. We just finished our attic and adding duct is not feasible. Ductless heat pump is too costly also. It's mostly going to be my wife's work space but will also be a guest room so we need to make sure whatever we put up there can kick out heat when needed. I'm guessing it's around 250 sq ft. At this point I'm just going to get two of the cheapest baseboard heaters and put one by the window near the bed and one by the window in the work area and call it a day.
>>
for smaller spaces just use an electric fireplace. they look nice and can usually heat 1000-1500ft2. there's also portable electric heaters which are fairly cheap, throw out enough heat and can be placed close to where you're sitting so you don't have to actually heat the entire room

What if i buy battery replacement with shitty capacity, and solder old GOOD capacity cells? Will this work? Does china replacement batterys also making "rememeber effect" and not charging propperly after some time? I need battery expert oinion i guess.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1098182
all ol cells have lost capacity. Lithium ions lose charge capacity just sitting there. The chemistry of the cell is inherently mechanically unstable.

Second, nearly all smart battery controllers have electronics that monitor aggressively for out of spec conditions. Disconnect a cell to replace it, and the controller will see that, mark the battery disabled/failed and blow a set of fuses intended to isolte the cells from the outside world. The blown fuses are permanent, and the only sources I've found for them are on Alibaba.
>>
>>1098183
...and that's the the start of your worries.

In any case, you can do it, but you'll need expertise and possibly vendor-specific programming equipment to do a decent job.
>>
>>1098183
>>1098184
Does the controller see different cells or just stop working forever if disconnected from any power from those cells?

Hello, Im interested in building a neurophone (http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/ciencia/supressed_inventions/suppressed_inventions23.htm), sadly I know jack shit about electronics.

Theres a lot of youtube videos showing how to build neurophones on breadboards, however it seems like all of them only have the transcranial direct current stimulation thing, but not the sound to brainwave function which is what Im going for.

http://www.gocs1.com/gocs1/Psionics/NeurophonePlans.txt

I found these instructions on how to build one with the sound function covered, I already have all the materials listed, save for the PCB since I cant for the life of me figure out what the connection symbols mean ( Ä, 3, /, \ ).

I have a 10x30 small breadboard and was wondering if the project could be done on it.

also wondering if a 4.902 mhz oscillator can be used instead of the 5 mhz, and exactly how many piezo buzzers are needed (the guy lists like 4 different types, yet in the diagram theres only connections for 2, plus I only have the buzzers with 2 wires (black and red), where did the other ones with 3 wires come from? what are they even called?

Yes. Not just rude but stupid.

You should schedule each individually and let them know that there will be competing bids.

They will each have questions that they should ask you about scope and details of the project. Having all 3 show up at once , they wont get the time to talk to you about the project.

Honestlyi wouodnt be surprised if some or all walk off when they realize you have booked 3 at once.

Hey I occasionally lurk in /diy/ so please forgive me if I broke a rule by posting this somehow or something.

I dug out these really old boots which I haven't seen in a long time, and surprisingly they still fit. Since they are waterproof and don't look half bad, I got the idea to "restore" them and add a little modification of my own.

Firstly their soles are completely worn out (see next pic related), and are as you probably expect, really shitty to use to walk on snowy, icy, or wet ground in their current state. I'm seeking advice on how might I go about giving these things a new tread, whether it be by somehow cutting a new tread into these, or by gluing new ones on or something.

Secondly I have been thinking of cutting into the boots on the inside face of both heels, to sew or glue in a zipper, for fast boot access (I've grown accustomed to taking my footwear off upon entering a home, I'd like to be able to take these off without having to spend 5-10 minutes unlacing the tight boots). I am, again, looking for some advice or something, perhaps on keeping them waterproof if I were to proceed with the zipper idea.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

I was thinking of this exact project lately, but Im swaying towards putting a galileo or something in a backpack and interfacing it with the pipboy via bluetooth. Then I don't need to pack much into it other than a few circuits and a screen. A phone wont give you any gpio other than through aux so to make any reasonable additions you would probably need to use bluetooth anyway. Then again the backpack might ruin your whole idea of a pipboy
