Someone explain the imitation crab meat meme. Is it just from this image? I get the feeling the way you guys use it there's a little more to it. I understood the pallet and shipping crate ones after a couple days and I've been on this board a few months now.

Love,
Newfag

PS Nice board very informative even though [s4s] is better

We'll tell the story slowly, but I have to warn you, this is a slow board.

This one time a guy came on here and asked where he could acquire I believe it was a ton of frozen, imitation crab meat. This was before bunkerbro to my recollection, however at the start of the shipping container nonsense.

So I have a problem where I keep learning new skills that I will never use. For what ever reason this week I have an itch to find gold. There is no gold in my state (Indiana) except for specific glacier run off, but as luck would have it, there is such deposits and a large stream in my back pasture. The only thing left to do now is try to find some gold. Problem is I don't know what the hell I'm doing, so are there any amateur/professional gold prospectors here who would like to give me some tips that I may be overlooking?

As for my sluice I'm planning on running everything through a series of progressively smaller screen down to 1/4 vertically then put some sideways wood strips for my initial baffles, then some field tile spread flat for secondary, and finally some 1/4 inch hardware cloth spread over burlap to catch any fine particles. The slant I'm thinking will be around 5-8% because that's the slope of the bank I'll be working on.

As far as where I will be trying this, I have two spots in mind that I intend to try, the first is mainly medium/fine rock with silt right behind that sits just behind a 90° angle where the creek goes from narrow deep fast moving water to wide flat slower water. The second spot is a pool right in front of a culvert we put in were the water had to raise up about 2.5 feet to get through the culvert. It's almost exclusively silt/organic debris, but I'm hopping it acted as a trap giving any gold that may have washed there a chance to settle before the water moved on.

Anyone able to offer any advice for a beginner or modifications/alterations to my plan?

What's the best scroll saw?
Or what are the things I should look for in a scroll saw?
Is the Dremel scroll saw hybrid a meme?
Also, some saws' speeds are two-step, some are adjustable, does it really matter?
Going to cut wood mostly but maybe plastics and acrylic shit too but not that much I guess.

I dunno, but a family member recently came across an old scroll saw at a sale and got it for me for Christmas. I never really wanted one, so I've got no idea what to do with it. What are some ideas/what are you gonna use yours for?

Nice to have

>air hose to blow off dust so you can see the line you are cutting
>work light
>adjustable table
>easy access blade change

There are 2 types of blades. pin end and plain end. i have used both and will say i like pin end slightly more but i bought a plain end because i got a good deal on one.

Adjustable tables really are nice to have and fairly common.

Have never heard of adjustable speeds. I would think that would be nice if you could get it.

I bought one like pic related for $10. I commonly see them online for $15 to $50 depending on condition.

Mine looked like crap when i got it but it was 100% cosmetic. just some dirt that i spend an hour cleaning at it looked fine.

Just make sure the motor is good.

Just google "Scroll saw projects". You can do some very cool things with them.

I like to make fancy shelf braces myself. And segmented projects are a great gift.

(shoot, I just looked on ebay and used copies are like $5)

shouldn't be that hard, what is it you are looking to do?

add a receptacle?
replace a faucet?
find out why the furnace decided to die at 3am?

I've learned 95% of what I know by watching and doing (or simply following the instructions), the rest by simply searching the web

obviously searching for "learn everything diy free" is not going to help that much; but even just being here on /diy/ and reading about other peoples' problems will help

I don't know if there is a torrent of This Old House out there, but that is a huge opportunity to learn....only current episodes are available to stream free online

So I want to do a little, art project if you want to call it that; I want to make a transformer action figure look more "realistic". Basically what I want to do is replace virtually all the plastic pieces with die cast metal equivalents. Other things I'd want to do is make working pistons, wire leds, and perhaps somehow incorporate silicone and faux fur for the "beast mode". If I'm ambitious, later on I might re-engineer the toy entirely to include more points of articulation and better ways to cleverly disguise the robot mode when it's in beast mode. BUT, baby steps!

There are a few glaring things I'd need to solve but the first obstacle I'm facing is making the die cast parts. I found this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9UwQ6MR00o
I think this demonstrates a way I could probably approach the task. My question is; what sort of plaster would I need to use to achieve this? Is there specific plaster used for making diecast metal parts? I think I would make the mold in 2 parts so that I could get the plastic pieces out. I would probably need to machine the parts a bit and file/sand so that I can clean up any roughness left by the molding process too.

I figure if I can make die cast metal parts, making fleshy silicone parts shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

Anyone have some input?

Homemade diecast will have shit precision. Just have someone mill it or something.
>>
>>1095217
How much would that cost to do? I'm assuming it'd include the price of the metal materials used.

Where would I seek out a service like this? I'm too used to doing everything myself.
>>

Prototyping companies or maybe local metals hops. It'll cost you a few hundred probably

Hello /diy/, /o/ here.
Wanted to know if you guys had ever built a can crusher?

I have some leftover wood i was going to toss but figured i could make something handy.
I want to build a can crusher so i can give it to my dad since hes on the older side now and hes having trouble bending to reach crushed cans from off the ground.

I have the tools and a little bit of carpentry experience
(mostly putting up safety handrails and forms for concrete pours).

Im trying to find plans but i keep running into those Pay-to-see-Plans websites.

Any help?

Well, you could skip the bullshit and bail.

YouTube pneumatic can crusher or build dis https://youtu.be/1WqrLAE7VZw
>>
>>1095162
Cant build anything too big and he doesnt have enough cans to warrant building a rig like in the vid.
Thought about going the pneumatic route but that would require me buying him an air compressor and i know he cant be fucked with that.

I have a set of old shocks i took off my truck, any way i can retrofit them for can crushing duty?

Just bought a 1963 house in the US and it's all 2 prong outlets with a few incorrectly wired 3 prong (no ground nor gfci). Kitchen is wired 3 prong correctly, but no gfci.

I'm moderately electrically inclined (software dev by day) and looking to learn more about this. I have and know how to use multimeter and outlet tester.

My testing indicates the boxes are not grounded so I can't just pop in new outlets and ground them to the box. Can someone confirm that this is not bx cable? I am unfamiliar with spotting the different types. Am I going to have to fish wire?

New to the board too, so please be gentle. Thanks!

>>1095092
you need to rewire the whole house, this is not /diy/able bcos u need a licensed electrician
>>
>>1095114
I think so, too, but was hoping to avoid it.

I went up in the attic to take a look and the cable is stamped with "dutrax type nm 600v" of the 2 wire variety. Would it save money if I ran the wires, but left them completely unconnected? Googling says I'm looking at $7,000-$12,000
>>
>>1095092
Can you do it correctly? Can you commit to making sure you properly connect everything, install all needed conduit and junction boxes?

Can you install it like an electrician would?

Then do it. When's the last time code enforcement came into your home for a random inspection? You'll save money, but it will take up a lot of your time. Is it worth it to pay for the service?

As long as you KNOW you're capable of doing the work, do it. Fuck permits and all that stuff.

>Ib4 this is bad advice
If someone who knows exactly what they're doing can't do the work because of some stupid permit or code, they should do it anyways. Cucks love to say that you're inept or incapable, and it seems like that's all there is on /diy/.

I have two fairly old welers, one 20w the other 25w. I'm trying to solder components to a pcb for the first time and the solder wasn't flowing into the pads at all (I used flux) so I figured something was wrong, I used my laser thermometer gun on the tips of each iron and they're stuck in the 400-500f range, where they should be up at 700f for this application. What could be wrong here? I put the tips in a glass of vinegar and filled the tip-insert area of the iron with vinegar for like 4 hours, some rust came out from inside the irons but the max temperature they could hit didn't change. Just buy a new iron?

>two fairly old welers
One named Peter, one named Paul?
>>
>>1095086
both the same temp?

i'd check the outlet voltage. they're probably working right, just at a low voltage.
>>
>>1095086
is this bait?

clean those tips, dampen a paper towel and fold it over a few times so its 8 layers or so, and once they heat up rub the tips on the paper towel all. then tin the tips by applying a small amount of solder.

how old is your solder, is it flux core, are you using flux if it isn't. solder oxidizes over time and doesn't flow as well.

i have a detached garage i'd like to be a gym & studio, which will contain my computer, musical instruments & equipment, and fitness type equipment.

i live in a very humid area during the summer.

some people tell me to insulate the garage door. some people tell me to enclose the garage door. i want to air condition the space. i don't want it to be a "garage" anymore. the area i live in is very humid during the summer.

so, who is stupider, the people who tell me to enclose the garage, or the people who tell me to insulate the garage door?

The people who tell you to enclose the door are correct. It will hold heat and cool better
>>
>>1095040
that settles it
>>
>>1095039
It's a small space. So just throw some blanket type insulation on it like in your pic and crank up the AC.

Proper insulation would vastly decrease the amount of time the AC has to run. For that you would have to build a proper insulating wall over the door, but also over all your other walls (which are almost certainly single walls with lousy insulation value).
