Hey anons, i recently locked myself out of my apartment and had to pry myself back in quickly or be late for work. I did some pretty serious damage and was wondering if y'all have any ideas as to making it decently fixed so my landlord doesn't try and charge 450$ to fix it. The green outer layer seems to be a metal of some sort and I don't know how I could reshape and put it back? I'm thinking I can just take a brilliant pad and kind of smooth over the green onto the markings when I'm done. I've taken some white silicon that I had and started trying to fix the outside part.
The knob fell off the day after for some reason so I'm gonna take it apart and see if it's fixable, if not I'll buy a new one.
What do you guys think?

Just hammer the metal till its pretty much back to its original position. Some dents will be visible but you can sand it down and use some auto filler to make it smooth and paint over it. The wood part seems ok so you can leave it like that. If not then im sure there is some wood filler you can use to make it smooth.

you can get one of these brass lock reinforcers, so it'll look like a security feature, rather than a cover up for the work of a madman.

It appears that if the bricks were made carefully, the Tower of Babylon could be created to the biblical description: 2484 metres of brick.

The question is, how long would it take?
I suppose the two main things to consider would be how many brick-metres can be lifted per man-second, and how hard it would be to get that brick into the right place.

>>
>>1099248
There is a limit where the building is too heavy to support itself even if it is solid bricks so unless it is very cleverly designed to reduce weight it won't reach half of that.

How long to build is another matter but it is simply a logistics problem or technical problem. If you build it like a pyramid then imagine building a fuck ton of pyramids on top of each other, i.e. fucking ages. Of course it is 2017 we can have machinery to move things faster.

How hard to lay bricks, it won't matter because laying bricks at the top is the same deal as laying bricks when you are at the ground.

The question is, why bricks, why so tall, what is the actual design, how many are working, what machine are available, what the bricks are made of, where are they from, where is the tower, etc.
>>
>>1099252
It'd take like, 45 megapascals of pressure resistance for the brick to be suitable for for a vertical tower of Babylon, a lot less for a sloped one.

Brick can have anywhere from 1.5 to 50, the higher end stuff is hard to make though.

Brick is the canonical material of the Tower of Babylon.
>>
>>1099255
I don't know what is the canon, but if someone is clever about it, they would just build it on an existing rocky mountain, literally just cover the top and sides with buildings, then carve out the mountain methodologically to make usable spaces in it, then you can just call the whole thing a tower, when in fact it is just a mountain covered with a skin of bricks.

Been helping my sister remodel her house lately, which includes putting up several (current count is 5) new light fixtures. One she had me do the other day used the lightbulbs pictured.

Let me tell you, I have never had so much goddam trouble out of a fucking lightbulb before. They have to be slotted in very precisely, and I can't see how they're going in because the sockets were really tight and had built in covers. Once you had the holes in, you have to twist them to lock them in place, except there's no goddam room, so you have to awkwardly grip the glass front and rotate it into place.

First time ever seeing these little shits, and I sincerely hope it's the last.

Yeah, i have a light like that in my house. At least its lasted 5 years so far without needing to change.

They make little suction cup grabber things for these bulbs considering most of the time they are used in recessed lighting. I really wish I knew what their called for ya. Used them before but never bought one.

anyone have any ideas how to fix this? it's the engine housing on a Stihl saw. that little screw is actually what holds the bottom of the handle on along with the spring to absorb vibrations so it takes a good bit of stress. buying a new housing isn't an option since it actually cost more then the entire fucking saw which btw is only about 2 months old and has been used 4 times

warranty claim was denied because they think i dropped it due to the small chip but that chip was actually caused when the plastic split and pulled away from the saw and hitting the tree

You could try plastic welding with a woodburning torch/ soldering iron.

If you have a dremel you could even make a groove along the crack for a better weld.

Hello /diy/ was wondering on how to clean carpets. I do have a nice vaccum and a basic carpet cleaner. Was wondering if you guys could share some tips on how to do it right or some do's and don'ts

Pic related, not my picture, but it's how my carpet looks

>>
Vacuum more and don't eat meals or drink soda on your carpeted area. You can get the soda stains out with hot water and vinegar. Heating up with water to near boiling on the stove before putting it in your carpet cleaner is a good idea.

I always advise against using soap or detergents on carpet because it's hard to rinse it out all the way. If it's not thoroughly rinsed out, it attracts more dirt in the long run. You can use it on spots if you rinse it two or three times afterwards, but it's a bad idea to use it on big areas.

Oxyclean actually works pretty well on large areas as well.
>>
Thick shampoo/water mix.
Hand scrub with a brush to make as much bubbles as possible.
let bubbles dry (leaving dirt on surface).
Vacuum dry dirty bubbles.
>>
>>1099206
Soak in carbonated water (club soda or whatever the amerilard term is)
apply a thick layer of potato flour and let it sit for a day or two
Clean
Repeat if stain is not completely gone

Works nice on red wine, blood (both menstrual and nose) and other stains....

My electric heater (the kind that blows out air) is acting strange - it's heating for maybe 10 seconds, then there's an audible click and a flash of light from inside the grill, then it start pushing out cool air; wait 10 more seconds and it starts blowing out hot air again.

So, a) what causes this, and b) can I do something about this with basic tools?

Yes a new one's cheap but it's more of a /diy/ principle, I'd rather try to fix something first before replacing it.

It is a safety feature. Make sure the fan is upright. There should be a switch that turns the off if tipped over so you don't catch your house on fire. Does it completely shut off?
>>
>>1098931
its probably the high limit switch that you hear clicking and breaking the circuit. thats usually due to low airflow either from it being dirty or the inlet/outlet being blocked in some way

It's obviously standing upright on its feet, so it must be something else. Also there's no switch in this one, its short legs keep it off the floor. It's more like pic related than the OP.

Hi guys,
I got a JBL Pulse 2 with a broken charge port. I need to open it up for repair. Found some video of it, so I know that there are skrews under the rubber rings each side, but I cannot get them out. Anyone did that? How?

Go to the store, buy the same JBL Pulse 2, then keep the new one and return the old one

Can anyone help wire this car stereo properly?

I got this chart but I don't know where the actual wires are.

The little drawing on the right illustrates what I believe to be connections so far. I got the speaker wires right, that leaves other 4 pairs a mystery. The stereo is CDXGT23W.

I don't have any wiring harness so thats why I'm bit confused.

can you hunt down the harness (3rd party or something) from crutchfield or off ebay for a clear picture?

https://thewireszone.com/p-8100-16-pin-wire-harness-for-select-2013-up-sony-car-stereo-receiver.aspx

These guys seem to make the harness, supposedly its compatible with the stereo. However the images aren't that clear.

If the image is even from the harness(and the harness is compatible) and not a random stock image, then I'm guessing something like pics related

So I move to Indiana for a new job and for my fiancee to be closer to her family. Been a dream for years for us to own a house so while i was cruising the online listings i found this house. Built in 1900 beautiful three fireplaces and needing only minor repairs. but finances are the problem. should i attempt this?

if you can barely afford to buy it, you surely wont be able to dump money into it
>>

My cousin just bought a 'tri-level' home for 225k about an hour outside of chicago in Indiana. Home prices are cheap there and he needed to do very minimal things to the house. The house is huge too, over 2k square feet, half finished basement. But he plans on having a dumb amount of kids. I think he's an idiot for it but the price and the house is fantastic for what he wants out of life.

How much is the house you're looking at?
How much house do you need?
How much house will you need in the future?

Is it worth blowing tens of thousands of dollars renovating a house that you won't use?

3 fireplaces seems like that kind of house.

I'm trying to remove these 9 screws on the lower case of an old 3DS but they won't budge a bit, all 9 of them seem to be stuck. The screws don't seem to be damaged, never tried to touch them until now, and I'm using the correct screwdriver, so they are just really really stuck.
Any tips to deal with these faggots?

My TV/monitor started having more and more trouble turning on. From what I've read this can often be fixed inexpensively by replacing the capacitors. Problem is, I'm not sure which one(s) to replace. None of them seem to have the bulging ends that are supposedly typical of busted capacitors. Anyone know?

Also regarding the monitor: it often wouldn't turn on and I'd have to press the power button multiple times. As it worsened I needed to unplug it and plug it back in to power it on. Eventually even that stopped working.

That's a capacitor issue, right? Could it be anything else?

>>
>>1098725
What do you mean exactly?
Programming could be a bitch, depends on how professional and efficient you want the program on the mcu to be.
One of the easiest ways is to program everything in arduino for instance, but if you want to have more control over everything in the chip or/and run more effecient programs you might want to switch to AVR programming or low level C.
Also for some applications you want to use a PLC instead of a MCU.
