i think i have lost it. i am trying to build a cheap multi-copter / bike. so far it seems like the cheap 2 strokes for bicycles will work well. if i could find some cheap electric motors that would be better because instead of batteries i could run a small generator for power. any input /diy/?

Fucking made in china sucks ass. I can't begin to tell you how much stuff I've had to re-solder because chinese fucks cheap out on solder and wires.

I just finished fixing my 100 dollar headset and now my vape broke and I have to re-solder the micro usb charger back onto the main board.

I have absolutely no electronics background and I'm able to fix this garbage with nothing more than a 20 dollar soldering iron and a glue gun.

Why do people say chinese people are smart? Their products are fucking aids infested garbage.

The micro usb charger would have lasted except they chose to glue it to the board instead of soldering it.

The headphones would have lasted except they used shitty wires that became tangled and snapped so I had to reinforce them with more solder and prevent them from tangling with hot glue.

I FUCKING HATE CHINA.

It's fairly reasonable to fill an entire product with hot glue (if for example, it's an adapter or connector) for the sake of stability

Serrated-edge knives.

Try a good one like a Spyderco and you will realize there isn't a thing they can't cut with less effort than a plain edge, there isn't a cutting task they aren't better at than ordinary blades except shaving your face. They aren't even hard to sharpen, but people are scared to even try sharpening them.

Recently racked my cider after a month of fermenting. Still tastes, as someone on another site so lovingly put it, "like partially flat beer with some apple juice in it".

I would not suggest using concentrate if you expect any kind of quality. I'm glad I started with a small amount. I might just end up getting some tablets to kill everything off, then add more concentrate or juice to bring the flavor back.

Recently finished my very first batch of mead. Did an apple cinnamon recipe I came up with myself. Other than being WAY to appley (used 4 apples for a 1 gallon batch), I'd say its a success. Everyone I let try it said they really like it, so how bad could I have fucked up. Also has a very nice color imho.
>>
>>1084710
also saw a recipe for cider that also used hops for at least part of it

didn't know if that would make it taste less or more "beery"
>>
>>1084710
Same style I did for my first batch, pretty good reception at a blot. In the future I'll use cinnamon sticks instead of powder. Much easier to filter out.
Current batches include peppermint and chamomile.

So me and my bro are going to build a DND table, and it is going to be in the shape of an octagon with a hole in the middle. We plan to place a TV that we will project maps on to in this hole. I need to know how long the sides of each one of the eight octagonal sides would be; I have included a horrible pic for reference. The hole in the middle should be 20x30 and in the long ways side should be 8in away from the edge of the table as shown in the pic. I need dimensions for each of the sides and any tips on how and what to build it with; Including what to cover the TV hole with. I was thinking about plexiglass, but I don't have a lot of money to spend on this. 200-300$ on wood and things. I have all the tools ill need, or at least should. Thanks in advance.

This might belong in /mu/ or /g/ but I recently came into possession of a 1968 Lafayette LRC-60T turntable that I was told would need new fuses. Trouble is I can't find any information on this thing, even reproductions of the manual are unavailable in digital scans and sold out of physical copies. From what I've gathered the manufacturer is still around but its stores were eaten up by radioshack and circuit city and the like in the 90s and so there doesn't seem to be any way to contact them. Does anyone have any idea what sort of fuses this thing would take, where I could find suitable replacements, or how to get in touch with Lafayette Radio Electronics or have one of their manuals laying around? Maybe with an 800 number? Pic related is the most I've been able to dig up on this thing, from an old electronics catalogue archived by google.

Have you tried opening it up and seeing if the old "fuses" are still in it ?

ouija board, maybe? - they been dead near forty years. The current (2003) incarnation (if it still exists) has as much to do with the original co. as those folks flogging cheap chinese crap under the 'Polaroid' name, or 'Sony' batteries have to do with Sony, namely, fuck all.

But, I digress - open it up, take pictures if needed, report back. $200 was a shitload in 68, dont even get speakers, the cheap mofos.

Well I'm no electrical engineer but this thing looks like a bitch and a half. The only removable piece was the bottom plate, which reveals some groovy, organically flowing circuit wafer with generous soldering secured to this secondary spacer plate by an equally generous number of screws, which also serves as a cable guide and apparent ground (there's an unsheathed wire soldered directly from the underside of the circuit board to a washer on the screw directly beneath the blue-ish accumulator in the center right cutout).

The underside of the bottom plate did have this helpful diagram on its interior, but doesn't have anything that I can readily identify as a fuse (image to come).

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you solder a quite thick(16mm2/5 AWG) to a PCB connection such as in the picture?

I can't manage to get a good result. The solder on the cable seems to melt correctly, but the solder on the PCB doesn't melt and connect with the cable.
Should I've just have waited longer? I was afraid that the rubber around the cable would melt though, since it became really hot and I couldn't see any progress on the PCB. Or is my soldering iron to weak to melt it quickly enough or something? It's an $30 48 W soldering station which goes up to 450 C.

>>
>>1104150
Too thick for a 50 W iron, you need bigger iron with more mass. For a wire that big you need at least 150 W maybe even more.

The bigger the piece the bigger the thermal mass, the bigger the iron you need to heat the work area quick enough and hot enough up to temperature for the solder to work before the heat sinks away. And that is a very big thermal mass, way too big for any usual irons for electronics.

Why the fuck would you use such a big wire tho?
>>
>>1104150
Usually a wider tip helps a lot here, but i guess you might want to hold the tip you already have sideways on there to use as much surface area of it as you can, you want to press down the cable with your tip and hold it there and use a lot of solder, i think 380°C should be enough.
the isolation usually melts away a bit but that's nothing to worry about imho.
>>
>>1104150

Generally speaking...you don't. Wires that big usually have crimp connectors attached, to avoid the problems you've just discovered.

In the off chance you _do_ have to solder wires that large, you're going to need a fairly substantial iron. An 80W unit or larger should be sufficient The smaller irons just don't have enough thermal mass to heat the end quickly enough.

How much would it cost to build a suit like this? Where should I start?

I just made my first. But maybe, just maybe, you should start by thinking it over yourself before you start shooting blanks in a thread without a question..
-What kind of design do you like;
-What material do you want it made out of;

I'll post some pics when it's light out.
>>
the one in the pic would be pretty easy to do

look at the home center for pre-made table legs, also need 2x6s and either 1x3s or 1x4s for the sides

tables are usually done either as the entire bottom being one piece and the top being separate, or the top and sides being attached, and the legs being separate

if you want to do joinery, use mortise and tenons to join the sides to the posts, and the bottom will all be one piece
(a lesser man would stoop to using pocket screws)

the other option requires no creating joints; the sides are all drilled/countersunk and then screwed to the table top, there is a little flat spot made in each corner of the legs where a dowel screw is attached so the threaded bolt end goes through a piece of wood at 45 degrees (goes across the corner from side to side), where it can be tightened with a nut

the second option is far more easy to move, and can usually be tightened a lot easier (yes it is just a solid)

the top would be a little trickier depending on tools and skill, and the look you want....you could try cutting grooves/slots lengthwise (like how wood flooring goes together) with a router, or simply trim the inside edges with a saw then glue the boards, or if you like the op look, use biscuits or dowels to join the boards
>>
Go the ikea website and download the manuals for their high end tables. That will at least give you an idea what some options are for making a sturdy table while keeping things efficient.

Also tons of table making on youtube. I think that badboy Mathias Wandel has one too.

You go to your local hardware/big box store, buy a universal fill valve for like $8. You need an appropriate sized wrench and some teflon tape.

Cost will be ~$25 if you have to buy the wrench. ~$12 if not.
>>
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Universal-Toilet-Fill-Valve-400ARP25/100554467

Also if it is spraying water out of the toilet, turn off the water and flush it by dumping a bucket of water into the toilet.

This. It's only a few bucks to replace the whole assembly. It's not worth the hassle of trying to repair the plastic shit.

Alright, tell me how badly I did /diy/

Roomate is car inept. He put 4 liters of oil into his vehicle flooding the engine.
His oil nut is too tight to remove with the tools I gave him. And he's too cheap to bring it to a shop.

Cut off the end of a 10 foot USB cable, wired it to a pump, and am using a USB battery pack to power it. It's taking oil from the dipstick location and pumping it back into the oil container

It's suprising me because
1. It's a 12V motor and only a 5v power pack. I mean it's not going super fast but it's working. It has to pull all the way up from the dipstick into the bottle.

2. Did not think the motor would pull enough power to start the power bank. I could have sworn I tried that before and it didn't work. Shitty wiring experience back then probably. Shittier than this one.

3. How fucked is that motor? Or is the oil not actually bad for it to run though?
What liquid should I run through it to clean the oil?

>>
If it works, you did well because you solved the fucking problem!

Success is more about victory and less about how you win. I like improvisation.

You could clean out the oil by soaking in Pine-Sol. I use it to clean carbs. Do not dilute it, and just recirculate the Pine-Sol through the pump. Finish with hot water to flush the Pine-Sol.

I've wrenched everything from jet fighters to lawn mowers. You did well in proper low-budget /diy/ spirit. I have mongoloid friends too but their computers and vehicles pose amusing challenges.
>>
>>1103787
>a 4.0 straight six
Can't kill it etc
The smart thing to do would be to leave the extra oil in, it'll just pour out of the front and rear main seals like every other jeep.
>>
>>1103800
checked, and yes. JEEPs just mark their spot.
4.0l I6 takes 6qts (including the oil filter capacity).
Nice idea there. I have a vac system (uses compressed air) to empty fluids.
Best to get a new oil pan bolt and have someone rip out the old one. I find that usually happens when you take a car to places like JiffyLube. watched them use a fucking impact wrench on an oil pan bolt..

Anyone here scratch build model kits (or at least embellish/kitbash?) How do you store all of your small miscellaneous bits and pieces? I have so many little things that I think just look like they'd be a cool addition to one of my kits, but they all end up getting thrown into a box all mixed together and it's pretty difficult to sort. I'm not really asking for any miracle way to organize this, just curious how you all deal with the same problem.

Plano and Flambeau clear, flat plastic fishing tackle boxes from Walmart are made in USA, cheap, and keep my motorcycle parts and Dremel bits sorted. Their dividers are removable.

I am a part-time firefighter in my town and we receive our calls by a little Motorola receiver (padget). However, as I was about to charge it, my charger just broke like pic related. Dude I love you. I didn't know a Samsung charger was compatible with other devices. It's charging. Thank you so much
>>
That looks like a micro-USB port, pretty common. If there is a thrift store nearby they've probably got one that will work, if not go to another one. USB charging is pretty standard and I wouldn't worry about harming the device as it will only draw what it requires..
