Hey /diy/,
I really want to make some bakelite crafts, but no matter how hard I look, there is no way to order new production bakelite (unless buying as a business or bulk)
What im asking is how to make bakelite and good methods for machining it in a home shop.

Buy some carbolic acid (phenol) and formaldehyde then polymerize some yourself.
It's thermosetting, so you mix it up, pour it into a mold, then heat it until it cures.

It's a basic condensation reaction, and shouldn't be too hard to make yourself.
I'm not sure what you do to color it, but I imagine you just add some pigments to the uncured mix.
>>
>>1101000
Ok, it's been a little while since my last work with polymers. There are a few steps I forgot:

You're going to need a catalyst. HCl or ammonia work.
Next, you're going to need to heat it up to 150C. This is going to make it foam at atmospheric pressure, so you're going to need a vessel. A pressure cooker should do the job.
After you're done cooking, you'll end up with a hard block of bakelite. Machine it how you'd machine any other hard resin.

Best of luck my man. Make sure you have good ventilation so you don't kill yourself.

Believe me, there are easier ways to kill myself should that be my goal, but seeing as it isn't, what would be a good plastic to create a glossy type of product. HDPE is easy to work with but is ugly as an amish hooker. Also, for coloring, I don't take it white food coloring would suffice, so do you know of and better methods?

Hi fellow anons,
i wonder what quality tool brands chinese craftsmen use.
There are so many useless threads like "US - vs German" - Brands, Milwakee vs Bosch, DeWalt vs Hilti, Makita, B&D... and so on.

In fakt China is one of the largest producer fpr hi-tech electronics, also many brand produse in china an jut put their label on it. So i am pretty sure, that there will be (maybe cheap for dollars / Euros) quality chinese brands.
Any suggestions?

Sorry for typos. Also excuse my bad english.

China isn't the problem it's the management. you'll get the same shit quality stuff anywhere and especially from western countries where the factories are full of unionised entitled fucks that don't give a shit about workmanship
>>

Man, you can't eat eggs, drink milk, feed your baby, or your dog, or build a bridge in China. Why would you think their tools are good? They make so many that some of them work. The rest get broken and replaced until you get a working one or die because your safety strap isn't actually safe.

So I want a new desk, specifically a corner desk.

I currently have a regular old desk, its a little higher than normal, which is nice because I am 6'8''.

I don't have the funds to buy a new desk but I am thinking I might be able to build one. Any help, past thread links, instructions, or write ups would be awesome.

PFA, just a google pic.

I should add, that I have two 22'' monitors, a 19'', a 32'', PS4, X1, and a 17'' laptop that I want on the desk. If that helps.

>regular old desk
how very descriptive

1. build frame out of whatever you can get cheaply, you could simple use 4x4s for legs and use 1x4s or 2x4s for sides and top supports

2. get some large sheets of melamine for the top, preferably the depth of the desk so that way you don't need to cut them or will at least have a finished edge on the side(s) you'll see

old desk is irrelevant.

Waterproof something. I'd cut some layers to make gaskets for my doors. I'd put it under my sink to save my cabinets from leaks, I'd put it over stuff in my backyard, I'd try to make something sexual with it.

Are they any similar tools with a wider gap so I can cut more at a time?

Or what would be the best tool to use to cut some of the plastic off to make it wider myself?

I need to store stuff in a shed outside. It gets damp in there. There are also squirrels. I'm looking at Rubbermaid Roughneck containers. How good are they at keeping out damp? Is there something better I should look into? It needs to be able to stack.

Not very
I rented a storage unit, had all my shit in rubbermaid containers.
A lot of them were 25 year old rubbermaids, which are built MUCH better than new ones. I also had some brand new Roughnecks

Was in storage for 5 months, stuff got moldy.

Nothing to fix. The rain doesn't get inside. The moisture is in the air this time of year. As for the squirrels, they are natures fucking ninjas. I don't need to stop them, just slow them down.

My backyard has nothing but dirt at the moment. I want to eventually have a patio concrete slab similar to the one pictured.

The size I'm looking to get is somewhere around 20' by 10', maybe a bit larger

My questions are:

-I want to know about how much companies charge to get this done? Anyone had this done before? How much did you pay?

-I eventually want to put up a patio cover, but I don't have the money right now. I'm going to just get by with the concrete slab right now, that way I can at least get a table and chairs out there.

-I know the footing of the patio cover has to be inspected. How does this work? I hear it has to be inspected if the patio cover is attached to the house.

Any other inputs?

>I want to know about how much companies charge to get this done?
even if this wasnt /diy/, everyone and their mother is going to tell you to make that shit yourself anyway
with that out of the way, see if you can rent (or borrow) a cement mixer for a day or two, and if so order a truck load of coarse sand (dunno the proper burgerland term for this, and yes an actual truck load), a pallet of cement bags
like in your pic you are gonna need to do it in sections to avoid cracks and just so you can do it yourself
i was about to explain how to do the whole process but i guess you can find youtube videos for it
gl
>>
>>1099602
So even if you DIY, i suggest setting up the pour, building a frame for the concrete, and buying liquid concrete by the cubic yard from a truck. It's cheaper and you wont end up with diy cement bricks when it rains.
$90 per cubic yard plus a delivery fee, maybe $60? That's 27 cubic feet. 45 80lbs bags of concrete make up 27 cubic feet. usually $3-4+/bag, plus renting a concrete mixer will be more than the delivery fee.
Also concrete joints are a thing, they look like felt, you just put them in and they make a compressable joint so concrete doesn't crack if the ground shifts/settles a little or from temperature expansion/contraction. same thing they do between sidewalk sections or if you go to any big store with concrete floors.
standard thickness of patio slab is 4", so 10'X20'X1/3'= just under 67 cubic feet, just under 2.5 cubic yards of concrete.
so 2.75 to account for errors/spillage etc, $247.5 concrete plus fee, so about $300-350 for the concrete poured into the hole you dug, depending on exact prices.
I would guess at least $1500-2k to get it done professionally.
More if you put up a patio cover.

Also, don't forget that generally patio cover only needs an inspection if it's a "permanent structure" building a freestanding pergola ontop of the slab often doesn't require inspection.
or set some u-bolts into it while it's setting, and use it to tie down a cheap canopy or 3.

the expensive part that's cheap to diy is shoveling out dirt, tamping it flat, and building a frame to hold the concrete.

of course, everything depends on how retarded the building code of your particular township or county is, and how much the HOA can fuck with you based on the contract and state laws.

What's the best way to insulate a dog house if the dogs love to chew? Need some material they wouldnt likely tear apart.

Help me keep my puppers warm.
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'd just use thick wood. Main use of dog house is as a good windbreak. Dogs are self-heating. You can add plywood or whatever is handy for thick walls and floor. Cold slabs etc are uncomfortable. Rubber matting etc works well too.
>>
>>1099492
Use rope.

Get a long, long length of thick rope, cut it so that it stretches from floor to ceiling of the dog house, repeat and cover all of the walls and the ceiling with them, then drill them into place with a bunch of good wood screws.

Puppers will try to chew, and might be successful here and there - but it's ultimately cheap to replace and won't threaten the structural integrity of the dog house.
>>
>>1099498
This. just sheath the inside with plywood. the air core between the walls will do fine.

My driver's side power window keeps blowing a 20a fuse (pic related). For that window only, the switch doesn't work. There is no click or indication of anything happening with a fresh fuse. So it's obviously shorting, but here's the weird part.

My car alarm is still able to control that window. Remote can lower the window, and arming the alarm automatically rolls it back up.

I'm out of my element fishing through wires, can you guys give me some idea where to start? Obviously I didn't install the alarm, but it being there means approimenently twice as many wires.

not actual shipping containers, more a variation on a theme, not exactly not-containers either tho. What interested me in this one was '£156,000 to build' (per fucking piece) info. If you knocking these out in bulk, no fugging way these cost anywhere near $200k apiece - still, tenants are 8apparently) happy, council saves 20% on average new build, everyone good. Can blame thos hipster container shooping cunts in Shoreditch for all this anayway, they all at it now, containers=meme passe. Still aint seen a buried one yet either.
