I have this in my attic, not as much as pic but along the perimeter of the attic floor. It costs a shit load of money to have it properly taken away by a company. Would it be dumb to just remove it myself?
>>
Is that poo
>>
Just pay for it that is an industrial job. Need a huge vacuum. Respirator thick gloves. Bunny suit and all that. I wouldn't attempt this at all.
>>
>>1099164
vermiculite? toss it in the garden?
>>
Not all vermiculite contains asbestos.
>>
>>1099177
Most of that stuff was contaminated with asbestos. That is why it costs so much to remove.
>>
>>1099180
doesn't that depend on the install date?
>>
>>1099186
Yes but if it indeed is asbestos you risk turning your entire house into a hazard zone. Asbestos is harmless when left alone, but if disturbed its fibers float in the air and enter your lungs. Your house could be covered in these fibers on the inside through improper removal.
Like some other anon said, that's why its so expensive to have it done. You need proper equipment and procedure to remove it and properly dispose of it. It wouldn't be surprising to see a crew of men in hazmat suits or similar show up if done professionally.
Mesothelioma is serious shit. 100% mortality rate when diagnosed.
>>
>>1099164
Vac, plastic bags, NIOSH respirator.
Easy to remove and put in the bin.
Just get yourself a tyvec suit and throw it away when you are done.
It's what the "pro's" use anyway.

Stuff isn't as dangerous as they make it out to be. It's only the friable (microscopic) stuff that's dangerous.

For the loose stuff they just wet it down with soapy water then bag it.
>>
>>1099187
Not saying you're wrong, anon, not even arguing at all, but you know what else has a 100% mortality rate? Birth. Just saying.
>>
>>1099186
Yes. Any vermiculite installed between 1920 and about 1990 can contain asbestos. That basically covers the entire time it was used for house insulation and then some.
>>
>>1099240
Have you ever seen what happens to people that get asbestosis? It's not fun. If you want your life to start going to shit at age 50, be walking around with an oxygen tank at 60 and be dead at 65 then, by all means, spend your 20s and 30s in a house contaminated with asbestos. Hell, some people can track their asbestosis back to a single event where they were exposed to a high concentration of asbestos fibers in the air. Something that is likely to happen cleaning out an attic. It can blow that shit all throughout your house via the leaks in your attic floor. Houses that still have vermiculite in them generally do not have a good seal between the living space and the attic.

And that's if you get lucky and avoid getting cancer. Steve McQueen died at 50 from asbestosis and cancer caused by asbestos.

It isn't worth trying to do yourself if it is asbestos, get the shit tested if you don't know for sure then go from there.

>le asbestos is like acid to your body meme
Shits not going to harm you if you take very basic precautions.
Like >>1099223 said its what the pros do, just take that extra step and seal off the room that has the attic access to prevent any dust finding itself flying around the rest of the house, and toss the bags out the window instead of tracking it through the house.
>>
>>1099297
Adding some.
When you seal off the area you should have it under negative pressure. i.e. it vents out through a fan hooked to a HEPA filter. That helps prevent stuff from floating outside the work space since it's impossible to have a perfect seal. A full scale removal operation also has a decontamination area at the exit where you hose off and remove your outer protective gear. (except for the mask that you keep on till the very end). The good companies are very strict on procedure. In the U.S. they are regulated and licensed by the State.

I'm probably going to die from doing brakes. Back then we just blew them clean with an air hose and the pads had asbestos.
Hell, I even have an asbestos fire glove. It's great for reaching into the fireplace and moving logs. Of course it's completely safe as long as you don't chop it up and snort it like a line of cocaine.

Oh, and the vac isn't a bog standard shop vac. It's similar, but uses a HEPA filter on the output to trap fibers. The big jobs use a truck sized vac and you just haul a hose in.

I did removal of asbestos from an old heating plant. Apart from the above we just used a big sprayer with soapy water. spray, cover with bag, remove, bag the bag, spray, bag, etc...Pipe insulation is friable, meaning you fuck with it, it will put off fibers.

About the only worst form is the old fired brick houses. Many of them used asbestos in the mortar and sometimes in the bricks. When people remodel they tend to just cut those bricks with an abrasive blade.. bad idea.
>>
>>1099297
>Shits not going to harm you if you take very basic precautions.
That's what my dad always said. Dead at 49.
>>
>>1099297
>>1099223
So if you are careful, do actual research, and take precautions, it will work out the same as juan doing it with some training. the decontamination companies are not run by geniuses.

But it is risky. so consider whether it's worth it.

That said, this factoid may help put your mind at ease: "One of the most important facts about the hazards of Asbestos is that almost all of the cases of Asbestos-related Lung Cancer occurred among people who smoked cigarettes AND were exposed to Asbestos.

In fact, smoking not only adds to the risk of Asbestos-related lung cancer, it multiplies it. A similar multiplier effect is also seen in those who smoke and are also exposed to higher levels of Radon Gas (the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.)"

Another option, instead of diy removal, would be diy abatement. maybe try encapsulating by using expanding polystyrene foam insulation spray?
I'm not sure how well that would work though.
>>
Yeah asbestos is pretty nasty shit. Saying that, there is tremendous amount of propaganda put out by the government and asbestos removal companies.

General rule is if it is non-friable then wear a mask and suit, bag it safely and seal your workspace then you will be fine. But if it is friable then you don't want to touch it with a barge pole. Since it is pretty difficult to know the difference as a homeowner the best bet is to pay someone to get that shit out.

But if you dont give a fuck and it's just you in the house then whatever man go for it.
>>
>>1099164

My Dad bought a house to fix up and resell
Filled with asbestos, all the ducting, pipes were lagged with it, all the insulation, walls and attic, 1/2 of the house (second story) had asbestos tiles as the exterior, the roof was made up of asbestos tiles
Dad picked up a bunch of Mexicans at a Home Depot and a Lowe's, this was just after the housing market died and there were tons of laborers fighting for work
He gave everyone a white dust mask, some cloth gloves and had a couple of dumpsters dropped off
He probably had 50 guys working, provided beer and tortillas/meat for lunch
Took the guys 5 days to finish up, he and my brothers would pick them up each morning
He paid everyone cash, gave a bonus to them all
Couple days later he called immigration to complain about the "illegals" hanging out, police ran them all off a couple of times
Re-habbed the place and it sold pretty quick, this was an old Edwardian home with 3 levels and a full basement, it was a great area with good schools, easy bike ride to a major Tech company
He doesn't live in the immediate area and always creates an LLC for each re-hab job
So just hire a few laborers and have them clean it all out, if the speak limited English all the better, be sure to pay cash, bag it all up and drop it at the landfill, be buried in a few days and entombed all safe and sound
Good Luck

Well it's easy to carry around on the mobility carts that you've been using since your 40's another 30lbs isn't going to kill it

Fuck that! My medical oxygen cylinders are used for lightweight portable cutting. Adapter shown in pic.

My cylinder cart holds a 72/25 MIG gas cylinder. It's better to stay healthy so you can used medical gear in your shop.

Fun fact: Oxygen concentrators provide enough O2 to run jewelers torches. Use LP or acetylene for fuel gas.

My bro leaves his Lincoln stick welder in a wheelchair. It much easier to move around the yard than a cart.

Don't let old people go to waste. Pillage their stuff.

Im not sure why this board has come up with the idea that asbestos isnt extremely harmful. You just know any time it comes up there will be a big fight over it with people claiming its safe to handle
>>
>>1100559
People don't realize that because of how sharp the fibers are, if they get into your lungs, they are not coming back out and they will lead to asbestosis later in life.
>>
>>1100559
I kinda like not dying but the pro clean ups can be fucking expensive. I'd rather another die in my stead.

>>1100559
they'll learn in a few decades when their stupidity kills them
>>
>>1100560
Couldn't You just use some sort of respirator then? And the only people who get fucked up from it had jobs where They had to constantly handle it people who only handle asbestos once don't have lung problems
>>
Every Fucking Time w/ these Asbestos treads.
>like acid to your body
Shut the fuck up you fucking retards.

OP>>1099223 this guy has the basic right idea.
I removed Asbestos for 18 years, that was 11 years ago.
My father used to install it for a couple of years, it was his first job. He lived to be 87 and died of complications of heart disease, just like his parents. He was overweight his whole life.
If I'm recalling correctly Vermiculite has a low percentage of asbestos compared to boiler packing or fireproofing.
A few people here have told you correctly that the fears are often overstated.
First off why do you want to get rid of it? Just because it probably contains asbestos?
Personally I'd just cover it with plastic sheeting and plywood over it.
Somebody said "if you disturb it, it will contaminate your whole house".
Air circulates constantly throughout your whole house. Every time someone opens a door, the wind gusts outside, or if a fan or AC is blowing, small amount of this are constantly flowing to every corner of your house. You would have to Decontaminate your entire home, basement to attic to truely be free of it.
If you really want it out, like the other guy said, wear a tyvek and respirator, not a dust mask. Strip down and shower when done and wash your clothes.
I would recommend removing as much as you can by hand. A vacuum is just going to blow the dust right through it and around the house without the high efficiency filters the pros would use.
You're going to have to use a vacuum at some point, if you can put the vac so it's exhausting outside somehow, that would be good.
Don't get worked up by these shit talking assfaces that are running their mouth about things they know nothing of.
>>
>>1100584
Continued.
Back in the day all public buildings had so much asbestos in them, the might as well have have carved the place out of a solid chunk of it.
Flooring, soundproofing, insulation, pipe and duct covering, fireproofing, roofing, electric wire jacketing, even window chalking and sometimes paint were made out of it.
And I'm talking every public building you go into.
Stores, restaurants, offices, schools, libraries, movie theaters, arenas, hospitals, military bases, airports, fucking everywhere.
And that's not including consumer products that were made of this stuff.
Curtains, kids pajamas, coffee filters, even cigarette filters.
Automobile clutches and brake linings.
This shit was everywhere up until the late 1980s when they started removing it.
If it was as dangerous as these people are telling you wouldn't 80% of the population above 40 be dying of asbestosis or mesothelioma?
>>
>>1100592
I know you are right. The danger is overblown.
The reason is that various chemical companies formed asbestos removal companies and then advertised that asbestos was like magic airborne cancer that kills everything it touches and you should call for a quote right now to get it removed(by an expert that is certified by our company).

It is bad and can be dangerous but they basically did a massive scare campaign many decades ago.

The real danger is that discussion about best practices are 'not for the public' so any public discussion is met with 'get someone else to do it'.
>>
>>1100577
It's okay, only a little bit of fiber ends up in your lungs for the rest of your life. No biggie.
>>
>>1099164
I would just scoop it up and shopvac the rest of the shit with a new top of the line hepa filter and then take it to the backyard and hose it down. Dunno where to dump all of the shit. Wear a suit and a respirator and gloves and you should be fine. It would cost maybe like $100. but it beats the several thousand to have it done by a pro.
>>
>>1099164
Hmmm yummy asbestos!
Microscopic fibres that your body can't break down floating about in your lungs shredding everything it touches turning your lungs to scar tissue and slowly suffocating you from the inside out.
'Overblown' is one way to put it, personally I think ' nightmare fuel' is more appropriate.
Asbestos isn't sawdust or smoke or brick dust where you forget your mask then cough for a bit but recover in a few days with plenty of fresh air.
If that stuff goes in you it's not coming out

You can't tell the type by looking at it
'hepa' filter is meaningless without spec
Sealing up your work area is important.
Proper handling and prep and disposal is important. Not just because of the health but because its heavily regulated and the government are keen to see if your arsehole knows how to tie shoelaces. There's a good reason it's expensive.

Saying that there are plenty of people with the right certificates who i wouldn't trust to boil an egg never mind hazard waste disposal.
>>
>>1100577
>who only handle asbestos once don't have lung problems
What percentage of the population has aids? Pretty small right? So people who have casual sex only once don't need to wear a condom right? Only people in porn need to wear protection.

Pretty fucking weak argument. It's not like smoking where it adds up, it's like Russian roulette where you either get microscopic fibres in your lungs and die slowly and painfully or you don't and you don't.
