Hey all, I just bought a home 1 month ago and have been living here for 2 weeks and I have noticed a wet spot on this wall divider between my stand up shower and sinks. I thought it was an isolated incident but upon further investigation I see that the water is on the floor trim all the way to the cabinet baseboard. I knew the grout had cracks in it, mainly at the very bottom and in the corners, however on this side with the wet spot there were no obvious cracks to collect that much water.

What are my options? I am being told to let it dry and pull the tile only on the wet wall section and assess the damage. I started thinking I'm going to have to pull the sinks and cabinets but they said no just pull the tile when dry and at least replace that piece of sheet rock. When I have it off I can see how bad the other side is. If it's bad then go ahead and pull the cabinets. Replace sheet rock with concrete board. What are your thoughts? I'm not sure if I should put the tile back up or go ahead and take it all down and do sheets of cultured marble like the rest of the bathroom. This would remove the chances of the small grout lines cracking and leaking.

When I bought the house I noted that the grout was cracked but my dumb ass showered anyway. Though I will say, behind the wall paper and sheet rock paper was mold so I'm not sure if it was an existing issue or just me over 3 weeks. The home was owned by a lady in her 90's, vacant when I viewed it in October, I can't imagine she used the stand up shower. I'm saying this because I'm hoping over the course of 3 weeks not much damage could be done.

I would tear the entire place down to the walls, throw in new insulation, cement slabs, new floors, etc.

Anything else is a bandaid fix.

Compared to other homes in this price range, this one was the best. no foundation problems (yet) no water damage lol that I found at the time. Not ugly or in an ugly part of town.

Hi guys

I want to make a metal flute.

I have access to a metal lathe.

Does anyone know where I could find an instruction manual detailing how to do this?
6 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Won't metal mess with the harmonics?

Wood absorbs unwanted vibrations I think.. That's why they are called "woodwinds". A metal woodwind would sound more like a brass instrument. It wouldn't be as soft.

You can still use a metal lathe to machine wood.

Why not use wood?

I'm pretty sure you can't find instructions on making a metal woodwind for a reason. Even the cheapest woodwinds use plastic not pot metal
>>
>>1116996
Most flutes are metal. But they are not machined.
>>
>>1117000

Won't you still need a wood mouthpiece?

And yea I guess you have a point.

Are wood flutes worse or more expensive?

Iám repairing my Mr.Coffee pot, I found that one of the fuses was open (I tested the continuity). There are two fuses serial connected, my question is: Why two fused instead of one? Can I just bypass one of the fuses, what are the consequences of this? Can I replace it with a different fuse or does it have to be the same one? The fuse is an SF214E. I know that the best logical solution is ordering a set of this fuses from eBay, but I was looking for something more immediate.

either the fuse went bad

or

the thermostat (the bottome thing in white bolted to the coil) went bad making the temperature rise so high one of the fuses went out
>>
Two is probably for increased safety.
Guessing the fuse is 214 degrees C.
I'd just bypass it if the other one is good.

So I accidentally flushed a plastic bottle (like 1.5in wide 4 in long) and now my toilet is extremely clogged. Is there any way for me to get it out without calling a plumber and spending hundreds of dollars? can't afford that

Turn off the water. At the hook ups.
Drain the toilet, buck and sponge if you have too.
Get some towels.

Unbolt toilet from floor

Hope the bottle is in the toilet and no your pipes.

Remove bottle from toilet.

If it isnt there.... hope you can see it in your pipe, and get it out.

If you dont get it out. You must call a plumber. That eill get stuck and cause a back up into your house.
>>
It's more than likely stuck at a turn. Is it just your toilet that is stopped up? If so, let the water go down/shopvac the water out and pull the toilet. You might be able to get it out through the bottom, or atleast poke it back through. If it got past the trap in the toilet it's probably at the first bend in the drain pipe, which is probably under the toilet. If you pull the toilet you'll just need a new wax ring to sit on it when you reinstall, it's actually pretty simple if not a little gross.

If it made it further down the pipe, check for cleanouts (AFTER ALL WATER HAS GONE DOWN) or call a plumber. I doubt you can shred it with an auger.
>>
>>1116872
If you are calling a plumber on this one.... it wont be hundreds this could be thousands.

Gasoline and matches.

Or you could literally post a pic of it on Craigslist and say the scrap is free to whoever wants to take it down.

They work for hair and similar clogs located near the drain opening.
If it's very far down they obviously won't reach.

If it's not hair where you can see in looking in the drain, just remove the trap and clear it.

tldr: they're fine with limitations
>>
>>1116785
also: after hair, the most common clog causers are q-tips, toothpaste caps, disposable razor covers, soda straws, toothpicks, and children's small toys. (marbles, lego, rings,,,)

Those don't usually clear these unless they are encased in something the teeth can grip.

I have those and a couple that are just plastic coated wires with pieces of velcro hook fabric attached to the ends.
>>
>>1116780
I just went out to buy a 50 foot snake because my drain is clogged way under the house. No reason the 50ft wouldn't work for that, and now you don't have a useless piece of plastic afterwards.

Replacing a thermostat for an ancient gravity furnace.

I've not popped it off yet, but research shows it is likely to be two wires only. These furnaces are incredibly simple, basically either in ON or OFF position, there are no fans or moving parts involved.

I'd like to replace the old thermostat with something digital, but all of the newer "smart thermostats" would probably be overkill for this. Any recommendations?

Is it worth getting a programmable one?

>>1116726
Depends on your house/apartment.
Does it hold heat well? Or is it leaky as fuck?

Honestly, those programing kind suck, and are a bitch to use. Just get a nest. they are $200, and sometimes your electric company will subsidize them for 50% off.

You can tell them to do all sorts of things, and it can even keep track of your location, and turn the heat/ac on when you are getting close to your house/apartment.

I would at least replace it with a simple digital one. but if your place is leaky, programing a thermostate wont solve your issues.

It is a bit leaky, I have been working on solving it this winter.

The house is 115 years old, and I feel like a Nest might be overkill given that we don't have AC.

The way that the gravity furnace works may mess with the way the smart thermostats work. Basically they heat up a giant bell, which radiates heat over an hour or so. It heats it up periodically to keep the house at a set temperature.

I'm going to have it replaced with a regular furnace at some point, but the cheapest estimate I got was close to 15k.

I'm in Minnesota, gas bill is negligible in warm months, but it was $175 in December.
>>
>>1116998
lol. I have a shitty leaky apartment with all walls being the outside wall, my gas bill on a good winter month is $160. can hit $300 and that's at 66F internal temp.

buy yourself a cheapo $25 electric thermostat from home depot, and call it a day.

I would stick with the system you have, its a lot more efficient that heating air.

seal your leaks, partition your apartment.

Help fixing door hindges
21 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
OP here, sorry just wanted to post the picture from my phone.

How would one go about fixing these kinds of hinges? I tried looking it up on google but I couldn't find hinges the same as these ones

I've never built anything in my life, done woodwork, or operated a heavy drill, but I want to help my mother repair them.

Judging from looks purely, I guess the way these work is each hinge has 2 parts. One gets screwed in the door frame and one gets screwed into the door. Then after all 4 pieces are in place, you hook (?) the door into the frame by putting the hinges together.

For the bottom hinge in the picture attached I guess I'll need to remove it from the wall seeing as it broke, would just using some self grip wrench be enough or will I be risking doing more damage by not removing it safely?

Looks like someone got his door kicked in..

Best solution is a new door, fixing it wil look like crap.

Remove the broken hinge and the working one as well, measure the door dimensions and go to a shop nearby where they sell stuff like it,
bring the working hinge with you and buy what comes closest to it for replacement.

Good luck Op

I need some advice on a project I'm planning to do. I want to make a metallic trainer butterfly knife based off of the one in CS:GO (pic related) but I don't really know how to make the handles properly. Primarily I need advice on making the parts of the grip which keep the blade inside so it doesn't peek outside of the handles.

Mock it up in timber first so you can figure out the blade-handle dimensions that are a good fit, then once you're happy with that= make it out of metal
>>
Start with a standard butterfly if you aren't familiar. Otherwise your Knuckles are going to look even more like ground beef than they would otherwise.

Anyway, easiest solution is making each handle out of 3 pieces.

Hi /diy/ I accidentally let this cupboard that hangs on the wall slip and fall to the ground and pic related happened. The damage is mostly on the lid. Is this fixable without changing the whole thing?

Thanks

No.

I'd cut out the damaged corner and replace that part with a square of wood. Then put a veneer over the entire thing so the gap doesn't show. Repaint. That should work...
>>
>>1116424
Flake or brake off the lose bits, bend the veneer back into shape. glue it. fill it with filler or bondo. sand flush. paint.

Upfront: I don't mean also launching it into space. Obviously that's off the table.

I just mean constructing a vehicle that actually would support you in space. Radiation shielding, air tight, life support, thrusters, all that stuff.

Doable?

I think it's physically doable since most of the things on the list are the same as the personal submarines diys. The issue of testing would be the kicker though. Do you test it to prove it is space worthy, or do you just toss it in a river and see what happens?

So, I want to make a hover bike, but I'm at a bit of a loss of how to go about it. What kind of rotors can I buy capable of lifting about 50-75kg of weight each? Or half that if I decide to go with four rotors instead of two. Obviously pic related is not me, but it's kind of like what I want to build.

You can recover a cache file of that video, but it can't be there

Thank you for the responses.
So it's gone forever ?

I was hoping it might be hidden somewhere. I didn't take any pictures or videos after the deletion so was hoping I could recover it.
