What does /diy/ know about vintage clockwork?

This pocket watch doesn't work, and I'd like to fix it or find out how to get it fixed. I also have no idea what it's worth.

I unscrewed it at the back, and it came out like this. Apparently it's overwound, but I have no idea where to start releasing the spring tension.

Apparently it's a 1903 made watch. This thing is absolutely brilliant; I've never seen anything like it. Id love nothing more than to see it work again.

Ignore the other turd/troll.
Watches like that are nice to look at but if you have no experience/training in repair, or the proper tools, you should absolutely NOT try any type of repair. Take it to a quality watch shop and have them look at it.

Looking for something to protect a rope that goes through a piece of wood. I could smooth down the edges of the holes, but I'd rather have something else like a grommet to keep it from shredding the rope.

Not sure if the home center sells something like that or not.

Get some tubing of the diameter you want and a little longer than the length you need.
Insert the tubing through the hole and flare each end.

pvc or metal?

Is there an easy way to flare out PVC?

I have a nice (was nice) Harbor Breeze ceiling fan that I replaced at my parent's house. They said toss it but it's a perfectly good motor. Anything I can use it for? It started to sound like it was scraping something (probably off balance) and they are selling the house so they want simple lights everywhere.

Can I use it for something more interesting like a peristaltic pump or should I just sell it on craigslist for $50 or so. Like I said, it works fine. Under the same principle of "only use the proper tool for the job," the best a ceiling fan can be is a ceiling fan as it is designed to be. Peristaltic pump is about all I can think of using it as, maybe to cycle aquarium water.

tl;dr: Good motor, what purpose? Keep it or toss it?

Also I am not an idiot I can wire it to a plug...

you can do tons of stuff with em if you have the time and tools, maybe something like what this guy did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA9UVzEIkF0

It's just a stylized fan (a loud one) that he gutted and rebuilt.

Sorry, not trying to be shitty but this guy has way too much time unless he can sell it to someone for top dollar, which he may, idk.

I'll check out the other videos though just because the build was quality. I'm thinking practical though.

Can we have an old style vacuum thread? Eurekas, Hoovers, Electrolux, anything from the 40s to maybe the 70s

>trying to fix one but can't take it apart, need help.

They cool af. Considering finding junk ones and hiding brand new vacumes in them.

This reminds me of a 'letter to the editor' in an old electronic magazine.
Guy wanted advice on how to get the back off his tube-type TV so he could 'fix' it.
Response was,"If you can't figure out how to get it open you have no business in there."

I've been buying books on building a robot for a while now, and I'd saved up about 400 bucks to get me started. I was going to place an order this weekend when I had to take adetour today going to work.
I drove by a scrap yard and saw a couple of power wheelchairs sitting inside the fence. I was just going to buy some parts off of them but they sold me the whole damned thing for 30 bucks! Only thing I can find wrong is the batteries are worn out and won't take a charge.

Controls all work and the motors sound good. I'll keep you guys posted!

I need something handheld that cuts pipe without breaking or wandering after 40-50 cuts.
The company I work for has been using pic related and it sucks my balls all day.
Needs to last relatively long and not break all of my blades and should be able to cut up to 2".
Price is not an issue because the company is buying, but it must be handheld.

Help me, /diy/, you're my only hope.

I own a 0.93 acre plot of land, it's in the city limits of a small town but on the edge of town so the area is all woods. I'm trying to make a self sufficient farm as a proof of concept, for my and my kids enjoyment and to show you don't need a huge plot of land out in the middle of nowhere to have a farm/be more self reliant. I have:
>Small house with a woodburner for heat; high ceilings and tree cover make AC unncessary
>Chicken coop with 6 hens (roosters are illegal in town)
>Rabbit hutch with 4 female rabbits and 2 males
>Firewood shed
>Lots of big planters in a sunny spot for a garden come springtime
>A big compost bin with a nice heavy lid to keep animals from getting into it

I can't get cows/goats/sheep or any other large livestock being in town so I guess I'm gonna focus on gardening and small livestock. What should I do next? Does anybody have any experience they'd like to share on the subject? I'll answer any questions anybody has

I'd rather not for the sake of anonymous-ness but you can be assured I diy'd all this-
>cleared the trees myself before I built the house 3 years ago, still burning it all in my stove
>built the 600 square foot house+porch myself, 4:12 metal roof with 12' ceilings
>built the 6x10 chicken coop myself out of free salvaged lumber, 12:12 cedar shingle roof with 6' ceiling
>built the 8x12 rabbit hutch myself out of free salvaged lumber, 12:12 cedar shingle roof
>built the compost bin out of an oak tree i cut down and took to a sawmill

Id love to pick brains w/ somebody who might know more about farming than me and wants any of my ideas on building shit

Dig a big pond for fish farming and make a vertical hydroponic farm above it! Its scalable and unbelievably space efficient.

You can dig the pond first and let pigs wallow in it. They will create silt and seal the pond so it holds water, plus you'll get pork.

How do I homebrew Evapo Rust? I have no chemical knowledge, but what I do know is that Evaporust is scentless, has no acids, and is probably some small amount of a certain secret sauce that I can probably source for cheap, heavily diluted with water.

I'm thinking it would be handy to have a kiddy pool's worth of Evaporust for dunking entire bike frames and other large rusty objects.

How do I make a strong cipher? E.G. Will it be impossible to solve if I take common words like I and A and use symbols for them, and using different symbols for the letters I and A? So the phrase "And I am it" would have different symbols for A and I depending on their location.

People normally figure out ciphers by finding common letters like E and determining the words that way, what if I make different symbols for E depending on it's placement in words?

E.G. in "THE", E is the 3rd letter and in "BE" E is the 2nd.

How much harder will it be to figure out such a code?

Recently re did the finish on my table, sanded down the fake printed wood laminate and glued on top some veneer and stained it. However the stain ended up being darker than expected so i went ahead and used the varnish on the side part of the table top which is still fake laminate and it wont dry completely since it has no wood to go into, i rubbed off the excess on the side no avail, its still sticky. Whats the easist fix? should i just remove it and sand down the fake wood and glue veneer and stain as i did on top? or just clean off the stain and have the color not match? any way to easily solve it? Also satin or semi gloss polyurethane finish? i already bought semi but im having second thoughts for it.

Yes I know i have a fucked up Laptop

I have a question about air compressor regulators. I was told that when not in use I should always dial my air compressor regulator back down to 0 psi, because otherwise the spring will break and wear out. Is this true or can I just leave it at 90psi indefinitely? thanks.

Do you also prop your car up on jackstands when you get home to keep the suspension from sagging out?

I had a regulator that didn't get adjusted for 15 years. The compressor died and i put the regulator on a new one.

The spring inside will be the last part to fail. The diaphragm and screw threads being the first. Totally pointless exercise that will fatigue the threads more than save the spring.

whats up /diy/

I found a hole in the market for a very specific hobby

hobby is mostly dominated by old tech illiterate people

I have an idea for a product that is based on a raspberry pi zero
very original I know

but currently I have 2 problems:

the battery- is there any information on ways to do this? do you guys have any suggestions? right now my idea is to use a cellphone battery
but as i understand it it then I'll need a charging circuit?

My next issue is a screen. I've decided that the screen would have to be at least 4.3 inches
but not any bigger than 6.5 inchesand capactive.
resistave touch screes wont work.
there seems to be a hole mess of different screens out there but no capactive screens in the 4.5 in. - 6.5 in. market.
is there any specific reason for this?
if any one knows any definitive guide to touch screens on the pi that would be great.
also ways of wiring 40 pin screens to the pi? is this possible?

sorry English isn't my first language

I'm studying as a welder, and I'm trying to make the MIG cert. it requires vertical down welding into a corner >< (on 1/16th inch stainless)

I've got the vertical down bit, but when I have to twist the gun such that I'm angled down into the corner I always punch out the back of the plate or don't get the penetration I need. any tips?

I also need advice.

How powerful of a welder do I need to handle 1/2 aluminum plates or 3/8ths steel?

Not sure about the duty cycle, it'd be for bike frames, building boats, etc
>>

>>
>>1115596
3/8 steel on a bike? I doubt that, but for 3/8's my fave is spray transfer. run it hot and there should be relatively little noise.

as for aluminum? I haven't welded greater than 1/4 inch so IDK. angle grind it to \/ and TIG?
