Hi guys
I want to make a metal flute.
I have access to a metal lathe.
Does anyone know where I could find an instruction manual detailing how to do this?
Won't metal mess with the harmonics?
Wood absorbs unwanted vibrations I think.. That's why they are called "woodwinds". A metal woodwind would sound more like a brass instrument. It wouldn't be as soft.
You can still use a metal lathe to machine wood.
Why not use wood?
I'm pretty sure you can't find instructions on making a metal woodwind for a reason. Even the cheapest woodwinds use plastic not pot metal

Most flutes are metal. But they are not machined.

Won't you still need a wood mouthpiece?
And yea I guess you have a point.
Are wood flutes worse or more expensive?

Metal mouth piece. Have you seen a flute? Machined metal woukdnt have the same sound as a hand made one. I imagine it would be too heavy and dull. Wood flutes are cheap and easy to make but they sound like a wood flute.
I think modern flutes are "drawn" out of a brass alloy. They begin as tubes. And then holes and keys are added. Check it out.
