Anyone here do hydroponics?
I have an ~8-foot wall in my apartment that I'm planning to turn into a vertical hydroponics rack about 5-6 feet tall. I can fill most of the wall with growing space, with a foot or two on one end reserved for a shelving unit that will hold the reservoir, supplies, and maybe a spot to germinate seedlings.
I have a design mostly worked out in my head, but the the thing that's plaguing me is lighting. With most vertical setups, they just hang some lights a few feet in front of the rack. I'm trying to avoid that. From an aesthetic standpoint, it's not nice to look at, and if I'm going to have a green wall in my house, I'd like it to look at least semi-attractive. From a more practical perspective, that takes up a lot of space that I don't have. Lights would take up a large section of the room and it would make working with the plants a lot more difficult. I plan on growing only herbs and leafy greens (no stalky or fruiting plants), so I figure I can get the growing pipes pretty close together.
I have a few ideas for how to solve this, but I'm not sure what would work best. One idea would be to hang strips of LED grow lights between the plants, a few inches in front of the gaps between pipes. Obviously, lighting the plants from the side isn't optimal, and I'm not confident they'd get the light they need, even if the light was directed. This would be the most compact design, though.
The other plan would be to hang a few lights from the ceiling at an angle pointing down at the plants. I'd definitely be able to light all the plants this way, but I'm not sure if the plants at the bottom would get enough light. I could always put some lights on the floor angled up, but as with large vertical hanging lights, that starts taking away floor space.
If you have a hydroponics setup, I'd love to see some pictures for inspiration. Any tips would also be appreciated.

Can't you just put a bunch of spotlights on the ceiling to light the wall?
>>1112078
That's what I was talking about with my second plan. But, once the plants start growing out, I worry that the plants on the higher levels will block the plants at the lower levels.
There's also the issue that, if you move the grow lamps too far away, the amount of energy they impart to the plant may not be enough for it to actually grow. Most grow lamps recommend being ~2-4 feet from the plant.
damn druggies
Hello, im looking into making myself a cardboard couch, basically it will consist of a rigid part made out of compressed carboard and then some kind of big pillow case with a soft filling inside, this second part will be removable for washing.
My main question is about the ergonomics for this, how would i go about designing it for it to be as comfy as possible. What is the best filling?
If it's cardboard I guess it doesn't matter what you fill it with. Shredded cardboard or foam.
Enjoy your non-waterproof couch.
>>1112000
>My main question is about the ergonomics for this
make a few test shapes and test them out. Or imitate existing shapes. It doesn't have to be an existing cardboard couch, any couch, or chair or whatever will do.
By the way, there are existing plans for cardboard furniture, you just have to google it.
>>1112004
the cardboard part will be coated in papel mache with a lot of layers of epoxi paint or some other water resistant stuff.
You will never come into contact with the cardboard there will be a fabric part on top of it
I have to repair my daughter's iPod. a 7th gen a1238 iPod classic.
The problem is that replacing the battery I unsoldered some pins from the motherboard and fixing it would cost 95€ from the nearest laboratory.
I would like to buy a used iPod compatible with that HDD. Is the 6th fitting?
The model of the HDD is Toshiba mk1634gal.
any suggz?
>>1111918
You can't just solder the pins yourself? What made you think you could work on a board like this without a decent station?
Anyways if you can't fix the board, or get a replacement online, your best bet is to backup the content on the HDD and get her a new iPod shuffle or something.
>>1111918
If you cant repair the board yourself, go on ebay and look for one that has a busted screen or dead hdd for cheap
the opening flap thing to allow more arm movement.
whats it called?

thank you. it was driving me nuts and i couldnt figure out what to look up while looking for clothes patterns.

Hulkamania dampening slit.
How do I get practical experience with generators, water pumps, refrigerators, cars and radios (big CB radios)? I don't have the money to buy all these things and dissemble them and put them back together.
While I can learn these things from books and the internet I need to actually work on them to get real hands on experience.
>>1111863
garbage. your area should have a special trash collection day where people put out oversized stuff. go root around and find something good. none of that stuff needs to work in order for you to take it apart, and you will learn how to fix it as well.
college towns are really good for this because kids are throwing whole apartments worth of stuff away as they move to their fancy new jobs.
get tools from flea markets, pawn shops, and yard sales. fill in the gaps with harbor freight only when you need to.
>>1111865
Never thought of that, thanks Anon!

I'm not the guy above but I have found all those things on junk piles with the exception of cars. I posted a generator I got off a junk heap and fixed up a wile back. Its got me through a few power outages so far.
Looking for a humidifier recommendations for a 2 bedroom apartment.
Our landlord wont allow me to install a proper furnace mount humidifier. Even though I was the one who fixed a busted pipe in my own place when he was trying to be a cheap ass and wait a few days for "his guy" to come out.
Anyway, I would need a portable unit type. Our intake is in the back of the apartment on the ceiling.
Can I place the humidifier back there, and either elevate it, or attach a flex duct to have it suck in the moisture work?
Would this ruin the filter?
Is that the best placement?
What's a good humidifier?
we have a air innovations from home depot. use distilled water. $60. had it 3+ years. like it.
>>1111722
How does that differ from a humidifier?
I need something to cover 2,500ft
>>1111711
>>1111722
distilled water does wonders on both ultra sonic and heating types.
you don't have to use distilled water, but you will have to clean out mineral deposits if you don't.
i would just leave it out and not worry about attaching it to the duct work. no need humidifying everyone elses apartment, granted your always going to lose moisture to the cold air return.
i have a 15 year old honeywell that has served me well over the years. i don't run it non stop though, mainly i just use it when someone in the house gets sick or sinuses start acting up.
don't leave it near a wall, it will damage wall paper and make it start to peal away. also 304 grade stainless will rust if left next to one for a week.
think of your security deposit you best bet is to leave it in the middle of a room and just let air circulate on its own.
Help! My fucking oven broke and I think this is the culprit. Can I fix it?
>>1111608
no, that is broke, can't be fixed
time for new oven
>>1111608
Hard to tell from pic but looks like it's the electric heating element. Won't be able to fix but you can replace it. Check appliance parts pros.com or repair clinic.com. you will need the model number
>>1111608
>Can I fix it?
You can replace it. ~$35
Turn off breaker. One side is hot even when oven is off at control switch.
I live in an apartment building.
Shitwater is coming out of the shower drain.
I've called the landlord.
I'm sitting here in shit-air.
Is there any danger I will die if I stay in here?
It might be days.
Open a window or something...
>>1111379
It's -5c outside.
>>1111375
Yes, there is danger.
If you smell something, that means that there's particles of whatever you're smelling in the air.
You're breathing sharticles. Get the fuck out of there before you become ill.
My dad's house has like 30 year old wood framed windows all over his house. He isn't going to get new windows ever.... Is there anything that can be done to stop these from leaking cold air into the house?
>>1111189
Temporarily taping is what I was just about to do to my door when I saw this post.
Felt strips all around. Newer windows use rubber. My doors leak like a mofo, I'm going to make a seal with some of the tape AC guys use on the lines to insulate them all around my door jamb.
caulk or foam?
>>1111195
this. do both.
caulk, foam, paint, putty, and shitloads of sanding (unless you are okay with it looking like shit)
What cordless tools does /diy/ use? Just got this Hilti 22v set and couldn't be happier. Came with the brushless impact driver and brushless hammerdrill/drill/driver. Two 5.2Ah batteries as well. Only con is how heavy they are.
I'm an electrician for a solar company btw. Serves my needs beautifully.
>>1111186
My company uses Milwaukee power tools, including the M12 Impacts that they issue to each of us. We have some Hilti Rotary Hammers as well. At home I have DeWalt 20Vs: 3 Speed Drill and Reciprocating Saw (what sucks is that I was given them used...and all they gave me was a car charger; not sure if I should buy the wall charger for $60).
i'm bound by contract to only use DeWalt

Oh look, its a youtuber
In my tech class, a group of friends and I found an old 1/5 Scale RC car that's in pretty rough condition and have been given an opportunity to refurbish it. We're hoping to replace old/broken parts and to give it a new coat of paint and shell. Decided to ask you fags for help.
The car is a RACO Jackrabbit. Simple car that runs with a 23 cc engine (Most likely). The left front suspension is fucked completely on a connecting piece, muffler is completely disconnected and we have no idea where the part is.
Any idea where we could find the parts we need for this/ advice so we don't fuck up anything more than our old teacher did? Can only work on it off and on for one class period during the week. Additional period once daily. We can always take parts home to work on them.
Pic related, will post an actual pic of the car when I can. Muffler isn't a tube unit like the pic, it's different.
You are most likely going to have to fabricate your own parts to fix it.
RC cars arent like real ones where they just keep making replacement parts when the car is out of production
>>1111107
OP here, yeah. I imagined as much. We're 3D printing a couple parts small enough to print and that won't take much physical strain. Other than that it's going to be homemade parts and jerry-rigging the hell out of it.
>>1111130
Take pics and keep us updated
I dont know too much about RC stuff though
Did this a while ago, but lets do this again:

Do the architects ever give you drawings that you just laugh at?
>>1110768
Every day.
One particular architect sent me drawings on numerous occasions with "" PRODUCED WITH AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT"" written all over it.
That gave me an audible kek. A big architecture firm too, not a shitty home gamer.
The best one I've had came from a steel fabricator though
>drawings literally done in ms paint
>lines didn't even join up
>bolt holes were ellipses of varying sizes and radii
>be engineer
>laugh at architect

This is sort of ridiculous, but are there any videos, tutorials, or books on taking random junk and designing puppets out of it?
Particularly the mechanisms involved to make it all work while still looking good.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vMpEwZzRzt0
Good luck finding a torrent
>>1110653
That's definitely close to what I'm looking for. I'm guessing there's nothing else like it.
>>1110642
Puppets are a ridiculous niche subject. I love them and find lame yt vids and few pages from what looks like the 90's.
Dont even get me started on animatronics. Talk about some black arts. This is someone into special effects since childhood.
All that hits the main stream market is cut foam, use hot glue and paint, have fun kids! But i can find long winded tutorials on cosplay, silicone babies and pipe shotguns but not too much for building an internal tendon system for facial contortion.
Sigh...
