Hey /diy/, first time poster so sorry if I'm shit at it but here's the situation
I have an old (Yamaha?) 25cc 2 stroke engine from my old weed eater and an old BMX I never use. If you thought "That could make a great dirt bike" you and I will get along great.
So yes, me and my friend are going to try and attach this tiny little engine to a BMX bike. We have a few things worked out (Engine mount, throttle, basic shit) but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas to make it better. We're going to direct drive it to the rear wheel since it already has a gear and grab a throttle handle from the scrap yard.
We are a bit stumped on how to make some kind of a clutch because as soon as the engine starts, the bike will start moving and that's no good.
>picture is a basic idea of what we have
>>1188983
Centrifugal clutch obviously.
I did something like this but I used a kit, not sure how that will work out but maybe check out bikeberry or other sites/shops based on motorized bicycles for ideas or parts. Even with a kit it was kind of a bitch to get working but they're a lot of fun
>>1188987
Was thinking this. Just wanted to see if an easier (or cooler) way was available. Centrifugal would take a bit of nigger rigging
>>1188988
Trying to do this as cheap as possible. If I don't already own the part, I wanna be able to get it from my local scrap yard. I'm good friends with the manager of the place so I get the VIP
I'm working on a project and I need 2 one inch pillow block bearings and a 70 cm solid shaft. Where could I find these in a junkbyard?
>>1188892
Pillow block bearings are super cheap, depending on the size you need. If they are small enough you can get a pair for under $5 new. Even larger ones are only like 7 bucks a pop. If you spend an hour of your time trying to find a set and you make at least minimum wage you've already wasted more money more than they cost.
you could get away with aluminum for the pillow blocks. therefore, find some aluminum round bars and slap them on a drill press in a vice.
for the shaft, you should just find some round stock chrome plated steel, Just use a set screw to key it, because if you are this dumb, I'm sure you dont have any way to machine a keyway.
Both of these types of metal stock can be found at any scrap yard in raw form about 5 days out of 6.
This guy had a video of this if I remember correctly.. he used this to sand guitar backs?
Let us know how it comes out.
Also fwiw I've found pillow blocks at my local army surplus junk store. However results may vary
Can anyone tell me anything about this water filter system? I tried googling but the company is no longer in service.
I've started to get a lot of red iron residue in my bathtub and shitter, so I'm thinking whatever kind of media is used need to be replaced.
Why 2 tanks, different media?
>>1188831
You're gonna need to find a company to come out and replace those tanks.
This is your water, don't fuck with it unless you know what your doing, because it can fuck up the plumbing and could poison you if you try something stupid.
>>1188850
the tanks don't get replaced, the media inside is replaced on site.
Found this video. Seems to be the same tech I have. Still unsure about the second tank, but it looks like replacing the media is fairly straight forward.

I know my Sulfide, Iron and Arsenic is high in my well.
hey guys visitor from /ck/ here, not sure if this would be the right place for this but /diy/ is for solving practical problems so I figured you guys are my best bet.
surely you know the feeling of not wanting to get up to turn off lights, tv, computer, etc...
petty problem, I know. But with tools like amazon alexa seeing the day of light I wonder if there's any way I could make menial shit like that automated so I can use every millisecond of my time wisely.
I'm as layman as it gets, so I wouldn't know jack about my options.
tldr; can I make a remote control for everything in my household
inb4 OP is lazy nig nog
>What is the elecrtical outlet section at walmart
Timer, remote, wifi-enabled app remote outlets, etc
Just take an hour or two and check what all your local Walmart sells that youd never think of next time you get a DIY urge.
Not OP, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for home automation controllers. I just want to setup a security camera with "smart" functionality. Ie: motion sensor, notifications, etc.

does anyone know much about growing avocadoes?
how do you make them tasty? more pee/poo?
What variety for a small one so the roots don't take over the house?
>>1188560
Kill yourself.
>>1188560
It's easy enough to grow an ornamental avocado tree, but I wouldn't expect to get any fruit from it. A fruit on a mature tree takes six months from pollination to be ready. And the pit has only half the parent's DNA, instead of being a clone, so the fruit may be some shitty crab-avocado. Just buy them when they're a dollar or less or whatever is considered cheap where you are.

I see nothing wrong with this thread. Urine and composted feces are traditional fertilizers.

Grow blue green algae. Bubble atmospheric gas through it. Use it to fix co2
Things to watch for: pH of solution is going to get fucked because co2 will develop a weak acid. Also you need to manage sanitation and growing conditions.
Your farm should have a bunch of like 2litre or 1litre soda bottles setup so each one could be a sepersre sample/experiment
Select algae for co2 fixing and oil/fat production.
Sell it to Paris for climate bucks or process it into bio diesel or ethanol.
re: 1188528
oh weird what sci fi books is this in?
yeah it's worthless but it's still an interesting idea
and hey in the off chance it becomes worth something (looks like it's worth a few pennies right now in some exchanges), doesn't hurt have any haha
Hey /diy/, I'm looking to make a set of telescoping flagpoles for my truck. I plan on mounting them between the cab and the bed ideally, and I was wondering how I could go about it. Right now, I'm planning on using a 3/4" piece of steel pipe for the base and a 1/2" piece of PVC pipe for the part the flag will be mounted on. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.
>>1188204
1/2 pvc is not stiff enough to fly your rebel flag bubba.
Be sure to livestream whatever happens when you DO get the flag up.
>>1188209
Should I go all metal instead? would aluminum be good enough or should I stick with steel all the way through?
>>1188212
what do you mean good enough?
pvc pipe for plumbing has set size and wall thickness so its simple to say it's shit. metal pipe you can get in any size/wall thickness.
well not any but lots of different.
but metal will probably be ok, depends on the size/weight of the flag and how fast you drive.
how are you going to keep it extended?
Help me /diy/ I'm moving out of my apartment today but I have an obvious dried cum stain on a wall
I have rubbing alcohol and acetone what will that help?
bleach or just soap should do
because seamen isnt completely soluble in water (ie when you cum in the shower and its like eggs) you man need to try either more seamen or maybe saliva
>>1188105
drink the bleach!
So, I'm thinking about getting a new desk, but I had an idea for changing the one I currently have. My dad made it, and it's a great desk, but after 10-12 years I'm just wanting something bigger. A while ago I broke the top part off the shelves on accident, so it's just not attached to them anymore. It's actually made it easy to move and I'm thinking about getting some kind of counter top or something to put over them. I did not think it would be this difficult to find something like this, and the only place I can find it is at ikea. The only ikea close to me is like two hours away, and shipping is like.. 350$. Any ideas? (Not specifically the one in the picture, just using as an example)
>>1187815
extend the old one!
>>1187817
Well yeah, that's what I want to do. Just don't really know how to go about doing the top myself, as I have 0 knowledge of this kind of stuff, and my dad died so I couldn't have him make a new one
>>1187818
;_;
Some relevant details.
Cost doesn't matter
I live in a studio apartment
Live in minnesota
Have sliding windows, so a traditional window unit might not work
Was thinking a portable AC unit, run the exhaust out my window and fill up the open spots with cardboard.
reverse cycle air con and insulation
>>1187745
portable ACs come with a plastic panel to attach exhaust/intake hoses and close gap
copper coil fan ac costs $60-80
I've built a frame on the wall next to my bench to put up 3/16" pegboard, but I'm a little worried about it bowing because my supports are spaced so far apart. The length of the wall is 96" and the frame sits 1 3/4" off the wall pic related to fall flush with an existing wall outlet on a surface mount box. I cut a short length of board from my scrap pegboard and held it up to the frame and it was way too flexible for my taste. Ideally I would like to avoid putting up more supports like the ones shown because it makes too many pegholes unusable. So, I need an opinion on how to go from here, because I'm commited to the design now, and would like to avoid changing too much.
Here's what comes to mind so far.
A - "You'll be fine, OP. When the pegboard is mounted to the frame it will draw taut and not flex."
B - More 2x2 supports the height of the frame. Or more supports horizontally across the gaps
C - cut some 2x2x2 blocks and mount them to the studs between the supports so fewer pegholes are lost
D - fuck off with this bullshit
E - a little bit of option D, but with and idea I hadnt considered.
>inb4 code
The whole area
About 30 inches between the supports and the 2x4s, so there are still studs I can utilize between the existing supports
I think if you fasten it at the top & bottom too, It'll be pretty solid without adding any more supports.
>>1187312
This is my hope, but I'd prefer not to put it up and have to take it back down to add more supports. Ugh.
What is your favorite, most knowledgeable book on any DIY topic?
Any OEM service manual (vehicles, more technical than Hayes)
CMOS Cookbook (digital electronics)
Pocket Ref (a wide variety of info like drill and thread sizes, adhesives, ect)
musical applications of microprocessors. i've been working on a DIY synthesizer and it contains fantastic information on the programming part and synthesis part with detailed schematics.
>>1187266
shouldn't that function be recursive?
>int getTomorrowDate(){
>sleep(24*60*60*1000)
>getTomorrowDate(); }
Try as I might, I cannot get this cylinder to go back in. I just put new seals on it and nothing has worked (WD-40, taping the seals, brute force).
Customer needs it by the end of the day and it looks like it could take longer than that, and probably damage the seals in the process.
Here's hoping there's some magic /diy/ trick that works every time.
By the way, this is my first solo cylinder repair so I only know *some* of the hydraulic jargon. Thanks!
>>1187159

>>1187160
I knew I forgot something
I would put a small chamfer in the inside end of the cylinder with a deburring tool or similar. The chamfer won't affect seal because it won't extend to the seal but it will "break" the sharp edge that's holding you back.
You can often use a worm drive hose clamp (sometimes with some shim stock to assist) to compress seals and piston rings.
If you do a lot of cylinders an automotive piston ring compressor is cheap and gets the job done.
I like this style

Pocket Juice (aka lithium charge pack for phones and such.)
Had for a few years. Never use it while charging. Try to never run it to 2nd light out of 4 so im guessing half capacity. But i use this fucker always. Lately the battery hasn't lasted for shit and i had planned on replacing them.
However. Now it seems to not be charging. Typically when plugged into the wall it flashes through the lights showing charge level. Now, nothing but darkness. It has been under half capacity and i quit using it.
You reckon the batteries are kill?
If the bms and charging circuit is out i have an $80 brick from walmart.
Also, it has a seem down the side but a rubber coating that doesnt want to come off. Heat would damage the batteries if they are any good so razor knife? As u can ser from the scratching i couldnt get it to peel off.
Any advice is welcome. I will get it apart 1 way or another so we can look at it. Even if it takes a hammer.
12 amp.
>>1187043
Bring it to batteries plus. Iirc also, lithium is better to fully discharge before recharging.
>>1187043
In the future, buy battery banks where the back comes off and lets you easily replace individual cells. That exists, now you know.
I need help making this characters uniquely shaped hat.
I know i could just sew it together, but i dont want to make a costume hat, i want to make an actual replica.
I know the process for making hats using hat blanks and moulding blocks but there are no blocks with this unique shape or hat blanks with a long enough brim.
So i need to know how to make felt hat blanks and moulding blocks without wood working materials.
Any advice?
