I need to replace this but for the life of me I can't seem to find it online.
I've used every slang term and technical term to find the name of this item but it seems the internet in its entirety does not know what this is or where I can buy one.

>bought new boots because started machining job and wanted something good
>spend $200 on some Carolina's
>stupid me didn't get welted boots, they're cemented
>not even 9 months later I've completely worn through the heel on one and the other isn't far behind
>mfw I've had people tell me both that this is completely normal and that it's absurd and they should have lasted twice as long
So which is it? I had an old pair of boots I wore daily for nearly 4 years that didn't have near that much sole wear on them, it was everything else that was falling apart. I wasn't working full time but I'd say it was the equivalent of 1.5-2 years of my current activity at work. Am I really doomed to spend $60 a year on getting my boots resoled or is there some secret I haven't been told?

I bought some no name steel toes from a temp agency and they lasted me 1 year in England and 2 years in a tropical environment afterwards.

After that I have been through various name brand work boots and none of them last longer than 4 months
>>
>>1193165
Sadly, lots of name brand boots are shit-tier these days. I wear Bates enforcer series for work. So far the tread has held up well, but the pleather on the top part has worn though. Had them for nearly four years but rotate through three pair.
I did have a problem with pronating (walking feet pointing out, that caused wear) An ortho prescribed me some inserts that helped correct that. (that and being aware of how I was walking). Now the wear not as bad.
The other thing is dragging your feet. That sands the tread off no matter how good the shoe. So make an effort not to drag your feet when you walk.
>>
If they keep your feet comfy who gives a fuck? Most people spend more than that on beer and coffee in 1 week

Hey /diy/ i have this old axehead and a nice plank of maple. I plan on making it into a handle, but i want some suggestions about the axehead. I want to keep the curvature of the handle because i like the way it looks (will refine shape when i actually cut it) but i dont feel like a double headed axe lends itsself to a curved handle. Im thinking about cutting the axehead to the sharpie lines i marked. Maybe even cut the second side into a spike. So what do you think, leave it or reshape it? Or any other cool ideas? I work at a machine shop ao the sky is the limit. And no i dont plan on using it for chopping trees anytime soon. I dont have that kind of land

Don't overdo it. A slinky-shaped handle is only good for one head of the axe while the other suffers

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a house from a family member. 3/4 bedrooms are normal sized but the 4th has roughly these dimensions (about 40 sq ft) with a 9ft ceiling.

My current room (I'm still living with my folks) has a walk-in closet almost exactly the same size as that bedroom.

I've always been interested in living in small spaces, and using that bedroom would let me rent out 3 full sized bedrooms to pay for the house.

What is the most efficient way to set up a bedroom in such a small space? Are there any diy tricks/necessities to living in a small space like that?

A prison cell is usually 6 x 8 ft. If you google pics you will see that there's pretty much only room for a desk and a twin bed. You could do a left bed or bed with storage under. It would probably be a turn off for girls if they ever see the twin bed tiny box room combo.
>>
>>1192656
*loft bed
>>
Dual purpose all furniture that you can, e.g. captain's style bed with storage underneath (if not doing a loft style) Desk/dresser combination if possible, wall mound any TVs/monitors.
Also make use of any natural light, otherwise it feels smaller than it is (and it is small).
Realistically, not a livable space unless you like the 85% of the floorspace being covered by your bed

Hey /diy/, I had an outlet spark on me today so I went to replace it, only to learn all the outlets inside my recently-purchased house are on 20amp circuits but every wall outlet is actually a 15amp.

The house was built in 1986 so maybe this wasn't a code violation at the time, but it seems wrong to me. Should I replace every outlet with a 20amp now? They seem to be a ripoff as all I can find is $6 per tamper-resistant outlet, and the standard 15 amp ones are only like $1.50.

What should I do?
15 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
a little 5-amp difference isnt worth worrying about. just ignore it. if you're autistic enough to care, just figure out which is cheaper, replacing the breakers or the outlets. i'd choose the breakers, coz that deescalates any hypothetical dangers.
>>
>>1192387

please explain why you think that way

obviously a trailer

20 amp receptacles are able to receive a 20 amp plug (the horizontal notch), its ok but a home inspector should've caught that & had receps changed back to 15a recepts (no horizontal notch)

any other answer is bullshit

Hello there /diy/. I have this Bosch ASB 10.8V Li trimmer.

•Link:
https://www.bosch-garden.com/gb/en/garden-tools/garden-tools/asb-10-8-li-3165140560290-199964.jsp

The problem with this is that the batteries have died inside.

The batteries model is:
•Samsung SDI INR 18650-13P 13000mAh 10A [Picture provided]

This seems to be the same battery according to the specs but it ends with 13Q instead of 13P

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-INR-18650-13Q-1300mAh-Li-Ion-Battery-10A-Discharge-/252972618036?hash=item3ae657d134:g:szwAAOSwfpVZFcUs

I was thinking about putting this batteries inside.

I have a few questions:
•Can I replace them with higher capacity battery if the voltage and amperes are the same
•Will the charger provided with this Bosch trimmer be able to charge these higher capacity battery
•How difficult is soldering batteries together

Thank you in advance.
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
You can use any capacity cell as long as it's 18650. Don't be tempted by cheap. Look to spend £5 a cell to get what it's labeled up as.

Soldering them is easy enough. Just rough the ends up with a bit of emery paper or light grit sand paper.

LG and Samsung are good.

The charger will just distribute current until the battery hits the charger cut off voltage so yes.

These will give you a head start on what you'll be learning in class.
Once you start welding watch the tutorial videos on Welding Tips and Tricks and Chucke2009.
Just don't go walking into class with a big swinging dick because you watched some youtube videos. Listen to your instructors and only use outside sources as a supplement to your training.

Avoid the local welding supply at all costs. Amazon, Ebay, Cyberweld and Weldingoutfitter are where I get most of my gear. Get good anti-fog safety glasses and always wear them. Put them on before you enter the shop. Get hearing protection. I like Howard Leight quiet bands because they fit under a welding hood and are easy to put on while wearing gloves. Welding gloves with an unlined palm will give you better dexterity and will help give you more precises electrode/gun/torch manipulation. Tillman or Black Stallion elk skin gloves are great for stick welding. Deer skin is great for mig and tig. If you decide to get good gloves also get a pair of cheap driver gloves or cut resistant gloves for cutting, grinding or other prep work. Get a locking pliers/ vice grip for grabbing hot steel with. If you are going with a full jacket, get one with leather sleeves. If you live in the south you may want to just get leather sleeves or one of those leather man bra things with the optional snap on apron. Wear cotton, no synthetics unless it's nomex. No sneakers, leather boots or shoes. A cheap auto darkening hood will get you through school.

I wore one of these while I was in school and it's been a great hood for the price.

Tuesday i sign the papers to become an electrician apprentice. Any tips or things i should know? Funny stories involving journeyman or learning shit?

I've been working as a construction wireman for the last few months so i know a little bit of what I'm getting in to.

I'm not in apprenticeship but my cousin is and he was telling me this story of this kid in his class who's fingers got smushed underneath something heavy and it broke his fingers, then he pulled them out which degloved them, he could have kept them if they broke but there is nothing that can be done once the limb is devolved they have to amputate so if you hand or something gets stuck under something heavy do not pull it out wait for it to be lifted off, they can fix broken fingers not degloved ones

Yeah, watch everything like a hawk so some dumbass doesn't injure you. Get more familiar with safety and health standards and the reasons they exist without being obvious at work. You can do that online. I've run HazMat and OSHA programs at a basic level and passed inspections that way. It's also a comfy job later in your career.

Learn your job on the job, but remember most workers are only satisfied with a paycheck and don't think "career" in everything they do. Be an information sponge and get smart about union hiring and pension plans.

Collective bargaining is the only way to not get assraped in the trades besides running your own small contracting business and there are plenty of those that fail.

Get all the certs you can. Many electricians in the US work on the side making fat bank. I had to install replacement weatherhead and meter box when a tree took my wire down and did nearly all the work myself (I've plenty of industrial maintenance experience) but the electrician who finished it and signed it off still got 400 bucks because the power company needed an inspection to turn the juice back on.

You can gradually accumulate all the personal tools you'd need as a contractor over the years in a very painless manner.

only bullshit if you can work while bullshiting
apprentices fist through third year do all the grunt work from water duty to big wire pull but if you get past third year everything gets a little easier and you get more respect

Lately I've been thinking of taking up carpentry, even potentially as a career.
Is there anyone here who does this for a living?
Is it silly to try and pursue a career in this field in 2017?
How hard is it to get into?
Does it matter if I was more of an algebra guy and not a geometry guy in school?
Could I use skills I learned from carpentry alone to build a house for myself and my family on my own land?
Thanks

not really

no, carpentry is not diy architecture

Not OP but perhaps these questions will help OP too. I am building a house and putting in a shop off the garage to pursue a carpentry/woodworking/furnituremaking passion.
What are the first three power tools you'd buy? Table saw, compound miter saw, planer? Maybe sub out the planer for a nice router?

I'm trying to find a balance between cozy and too cramped. How big is your shop, would you go bigger or smaller if you could? 20'x16' is where I'm at right now.

Fancy shit like a positive-pressure hvac system to keep dust down: meme? It feels like a decent dust collection system would be sufficient, but with new construction there's some economic advantage to aiming a little high with the initial plan.

Yea ive built a few as a teenager, had a few explode apart so be careful. Didnt really hurt me bit was scary lol. Anyway, you are gonna want a really good ignition system as sometimes the hair spray is hard to ignite if you put you put too much in and there isnt enough oxygen. A grill ignitor works but is not the best. A sparkler put through a hole works well, get creative. You are gonna want your barrel smaller than the potato, and basically smash the potato down to be airtight otherwise it wont shoot. Put an on off valve in the back for spraying the hairspray into. Dont get caught by the cops in the city.

buy some glow sticks and a roll of duck tape, hook two glow sticks at the end and wrap with duck tape in the middle until you have a ball the same diameter as the spud gun barrel, shoot at night and watch the pretty colors. can usually be collected and reused until the glow sticks die.

I recently made a deal on a one-acre lot with a dilapidated shed on it. I was excited to see that the shed had a poured concrete pad that it rested on, as this may allow me to erect a small, one-story cabin.

The pad dimensions are 35'x35'. My plan is, once I officially own the lot, to dig survey holes around the perimeter to test the thickness of the pad/see it a footer was poured, and sound the concrete to check for air spaces... if the slab is at least 4 inches thick, but lacks a footer (most likely), I intend to pour a 2' deep, 10 inch thick metal reinforced footer and fasten it to the old slab with rebar. If I can find a soil/civil engineer to evaluate the area for cheap, I will.. if not, I'll try to be sensible.

I have experience in framing, carpentry and some limited experience in digging/pouring retaining walls/buttresses.

What would you do in my situation?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1191422
You could have made the deal contingent on the slab passing your tests, if you cared that much

Otherwise yeah sure, sounds like you know what's up.
>>
>>1191425
This is a good thought. I only started hatching my plans after signing off on it.

The original plan was to simply have a place to park my tiny house, for some cheap living space. The idea of improving the lot through construction occurred to me later.
>>
so this plan is in line with local laws and building codes?

Dewalt is pushing this $600 DWS780 now with a "free" $200 stand. I need a miter saw but I'm hesitant to drop this much money on it, despite the "free" stand. Should I bite?

>>
>>1190938
Depends, do you already own a tablesaw? What type of work are you doing? Are you a contractor?
>>
The dewalt is nice, but the hitachi is a much better buy. Use it every fay at work.

I went with the hitachi for my house, and love it. The hitachi can be place aganst a wall, because the sliding system does not extend out the back like the dewalt.

The dewalt stand is good, but nothing special.
>>
>>1190942
I don't own a tablesaw (yet) but I doplan on getting one. I'm just a DIY homeowner, but I have some upcoming projects which will require a decent miter saw, such as replacing all the baseboard and trim in my house. There are probably about 10-20 times a year I find myself in need of a miter saw and I just make do with my circular saw. I want to get something really good which will last me a long time, and I can afford it so I'm not going to buy some crappy ryobi or anything.

>>1190960
Thanks for the tip on the Hitachi, man. I hadn't seen this model before and it looks damn good. I really like the fact that it will take up less space in my woodshop (garage). Looks like it's $150 less and also comes with a free stand at the moment. Will strongly consider.
