I live in a studio apartment
Live in minnesota
Have sliding windows, so a traditional window unit might not work
Was thinking a portable AC unit, run the exhaust out my window and fill up the open spots with cardboard.

Two part units tend to be less efficient. Could you have a window unit with an extra large piece of accordion panel? What are your window's dimensions?

They sell window units for sliding windows, they work exactly the same as standard window acs. Here's an 8000 btu unit that's 14.5" wide.
