Hi,

here is short video of this new kind of algaereactor I have been developing.

what exactly does a bioreactor/algaereactor do? Just cultivate algae for I'm assuming food?

for animals.

turn animal manure into spirulina and feed it to animals= profit.

also you can use spirulina for crops to improve nutrient uptake.

Super cool man. I recommend the next step you take is trying to synthesis protein powder from it. You will literally have infinite food and live longer than anyone who has ever surfed 4chan.

Fuck... nope.
>Well just go apply anyway.

I've only done labor work for non-union residential or contractors. Should I just quit now and stop wasting my time with this?

I don't hate unions but it's an obstacle when trying to get a foot in the door especially with trades. This site is in Arlington Virginia too I figured unions were more of a North East/CA thing.

If it's just for a summer gig, it'd be easier to get a job with contractors. Unions can be great but you're right, it can be tough to get in. I'm thinking, if you're not looking for long term, don't bother. If you want a career, then it's worth the effort.

Delmarva contractor here. unions have a pretty solid presence here, nothing like up north but they have some pull. however there are plenty of non-union contractors around, big and small. Just gonna have to find a place for you. But a big job probably isn't going to hire someone for summer work only.

I just moved into a new home with family, have good amount of space in my bedroom (White walls, carpeted floor) and was wondering some good ways to set up my bed room. I don't own an actual bed or shelf right now so i'd like some ideas on what to get, where to put it, etc.

On Letsmakerobots they recommend some literature, for structured work you could look at open coursework or robot cookbook.

For the last 100 years the oilfield has came and gone every 5 years. It'll be crazy good money and stupid busy, then die out with huge layoffs. Plan accordingly. Give it time, they keeping finding new pockets and better technology allows new ways to access older deeper ones. Just save your money.

Has anyone done asbestos abatement themselves? Specifically, I am looking at buying a property that looks to have asbestos insulation on the HVAC system. It appears that there is about a 4-6 inch gap at both ends, meaning I could probably easily just remove the entire section and just replace it. I am trying to find out how much it costs to dispose of the asbestos in this state properly, but all I am finding are costs when you hire someone. What I would do is put multiple coats of oil paint or poly on the pipes and just remove it and take it to a certified landfill.

>tldr how much does a certified asbestos landfill charge for disposal of asbestos?
51 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
In cali, you need a license to remove asbestos. Knowing how cali does other stuff, I would think the disposal sites would have checkpoints of sorts to verify the license.

Also, unless it's fraying, asbestos is probably a better insulator than other options. I'd just leave it, but in my area the existence of asbestos doesn't lower the value of a house.
>>
>>1183286
Best bet is to leave it since it's such a bitch to do properly.
If you need to remove it (I did from my whole octopus furnace) put a respirator on and goggles. Then cut sections nicely and take them off the best you can without breaking a whole lot. Put them in paper bags and fold them up (plastic blasts out air when you tie them up and push the air out). Then I slowly fed them to the garbage man in amongst my other garbage.
Remember, the guys who got sick were working in ship building yards where you spray the shit on inside an unventilated hull with no mask for 8h/day for 30 years. Or the plumbers who put it on mixed the shit like concrete where you pour a bag of flour asbestos and mix it in water with no ventilation in the basement.
Seriously you will be okay health wise, just don't literally snort the shit.
As for disposal, it's a natural mineral, in the dump it's going to do no harm buried in everything else.
We've demonized a once useful product to the point where we think it is literal cancer. Just be gentle and you'll be good.
P.S. I still have asbestos mittens I use for cooking, never can burn even over an open flame :P
>>
>>1183286
I did it as part of a removal team.
The shit is dangerous anon, but it can be done.
The key is keeping it damp, not soggy, but damp. Basic soapy water in a bug sprayer. That keeps the shit from floating everywhere. That and not letting it fall to the floor. It's the floating stuff that gets in your lungs and contaminates the rest of your house. The whole area we worked was sealed in plastic (two layers) and negative pressured (sucked air out through a HEPA filter). Every remover monkey had a full NIOSH mask and tyvec suit taped up like a fucking ductapemummy. No food, no drinks, no taking a piss till break time. Filled my boots once and I wasn't the only one.

We just double bagged the shit and sent it to the local landfill. Where they probably broke the bags by compacting them with a big fucking dozer.
But seriously, google ye "how to remove asbestos"

We got paid fairly good, but the company make a killing.

hey guys! this board is always a real treat but im only here when undertaking projects (i wish i had more free time)

this request for advice is going to be a mechanical + electrical combo

>i want to make the fans on my computer quieter

i dont mean cleaning it, i mean re engineer it. my design class taught me that cheap bearings that arent meant to spin fast can be noisy towards their upper limits of allowable angular velocity. And i assume that computer manufacturers are trying to buy the cheapest bearings they can to maximize profits.

furthermore, i know i have looked at bearings that are specifically designed to be quiet.

are bearings not even what is making the noise? is the the electrical engine that makes the fan rotate that produces noise? there arent too many conclusions to make about what is actually causing the noise

I have my own personal electronics rework/repair kit + an engineering university at my disposal. how could we not figure something out?

any and all advice/insults are welcome.

Thank you

electrical motor can make a quiet hum, but most of the noise is in the bearings.
the motor can make noise if the bearings/bushings in the motor, or from the carbon brushes if it's not a brushless motor.
fans also can get loud if they hit a big piece of dust and chip or bend, so they're unbalanced.

Usually the best quiet design is water cooled and a very quiet external pump motor that can be heavily insulated. (which you can't really do with fans without screwing up the airflow.
>>
Sound propogates through air. Noisy fans are usually because of turbulent air coming of the fan blades themselves. There isn't much you can do to change the shape of the blade and make it quieter.

Even the most expensive fan blades only seem to have little notches cut from the trailing edge. They are better than the cheapos but they still make noise at full tilt. Less noise also means less airflow.

Go buy better fans of you want a quieter PC
>>
>>1189619
Simple.

Buy brushless 120mm fans and instal them with a speed controller.

Choke it down to 7-9 volts instead of 12 volts.

Better airflow and quieter.

Alternatively you can do like i did and just throw a heater core from a dodge durango ina deep freeze and hide a pump behind it in the other room. Mix 100% antifreeze 50/50 with distilled water.

Not sure if antifreeze leak would fuck my shit uo but its an older system so idgaf

I could use a little help. I'm new to electronics, but i'm screwing around with some practically free li-ion batteries and a small 15 watt amp to make some portable speakers.

My problem is.

I know that li-ion batteries have a minimum voltage that they should not be run beneath.
(the cells are charged individually using a wall charger so balancing is not an issue.)

In this case it's 12-13v minimum output for the battery pack. Is there such a thing as a diode that will cut the circuit off it it drops below 12v protecting my batteries?

I know there are circuits I could get to do this but I was hoping for something painfully simple.

I would just buy some overcharge/undercharge protection circuit and not have to worry about my batteries setting my house on fire.
>>
What did you get the batteries off of? If you got it off a drill there should probably be a voltage control circuit in there, then again you can buy those circuits for less than whatever your tearing it out of.

I have a well in my backyard in my house from pre-1900s. It has a concrete lid over it, bricks around the lid, and gravel on top to make it look nice, but I wanted to do something with it. It would make a nice fire pit but it's fairly close to the house, so that wont work. The lid is about 3 feet around so it's either a really big lid or a really big well. Any suggestions? Pic is not mine but similar.

>>1188855
Does it have good water? If yes then why destroy it with a fire pit?
>>
>>1188855
Egh I wouldn't do anything that involves fire. Heating and Cooling that slab over and over is likely to result in cracking it and having to replace it or else have a gaping hole to hell in your backyard till you do. Though, it would make a snazzy sundial, or flower bed, strawberry planter.

This is probably the most appropriate board to ask this, so here it goes.
I wanted to repaint my ~18yo bicycle frame, so I stripped it clean, but in the process I discovered a crack in the lower outer edge of the chainstay. It's about 1.5-2 inches long.
Now the question is, should I just say fuck it to the whole project and/or get a new frame, or is it not that big of a deal? I mean, I can't think of any kind of stress occurring during riding that could've caused it, but it's aluminum, so the structure is already fucked.
tl;dr picrel happened, wat do?

>>1187703
Huh, that's kinda fucked up. Can't really offer any insights, sorry.
>>
>>1187703
It's no longer safe to take on the road, but you can mount and oscillating dildo piston to the chain drive and make a perfectly reasonable fucking machine
>>
>>1187703
if it were my bike i'd go ahead and repaint it, then wrap the crack in some asthetic black duct tape and then like 9 heavy duty zipties. But if youre doing anything besides just pedaling around town (trails, jumps etc.) then you can count on that shit failing eventually and no amount of tape and zipties will save you.

what kind of filling should i look for pillows?

i used the standard craft polyester filling from walmart but its super lightweight and provides no support i lay my head on it and it sinks. i need something with more weight.

>>
>>1187399

Walmart one is 86398cm^3 for 907g

While the slightly more expensive poly-fil is 43400cm^3 for same weight. that must mean it's more dense right?

Using a bridgeport, if I wanted to make say a 6mm reamed hole, I ought to use a fractional drill two size smaller then the intended finished reamed hole, correct?

6mm X .039375 = .236 thus the drill used should be a 7/32 drill (.2188) which would leave .018 to be removed by the ream, correct?

And for; 8mm X .039375 = .315 thus a 19/64 drill (.2969)?
25 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
from the thumbnail i thought this was about thread depth and was about to rudely refer you back to your copy of machinery's, but there doesn't seem to be a table for reaming.

i guess as long as some but not all of the tapered tip of the reamer goes into the hole you're good to go.
>>
>>1187185
Machinist fag here. Yes your logic itself is sound but how much stock you want to leave for the reamer depends on what you're cutting. Unless you've got a nice machine which I'm assuming you don't because lol /diy/, .018 seems like a lot for a reamer if you're doing steel or other hard materials.
>>
>>1187185
Simple rule of thumb is around 5% of the finished hole size, but you can go a little under or a little over as long as you have enough flute or your drill doesn't go over/wander/oval/whatever.

You should be ok with a #2 drill or #1 drill. If you don't have numbered drills, I wouldn't suggest using a letter A drill because it's risky as drills can go oversized fairly easily, so the reamer might not clean up the hole. 7/32nd should work, you should have enough cutting flute, just be sure you can evacuate the chip. If it packs up at the bottom your reamer will go oversize, or if it packs up in the gullets it'll fuck surface finish/possibly go oversize.

19/64ths should be fine on the 8mm reamer, letter M or N would also work.

I've been melting down scrap metal for a while now and have about a ton of 1 and 5 pound bars that I'd like to start selling.

I've been asked a question by a local complex that may want to buy the metal. But he needs to know exactly what kind of metal it is. For the most part, my scrap is aluminum. But I know there are several batches that ended up with tin, copper, and other alloy sources.

How do I check the bars and know exactly whats in it?
