He used to build such cool things like innovative tools, wooden pipe organs, crazy marble machines, air raid sirens, etc, but now all he does now is make sloppy lumber racks and ill-advised home improvement videos.

What gives? Is it because he became a breeder?

Hey friends, I just finished using spray paint to repair some scratches on pic related. But even after it dries it keeps rubbing/ scratching off. Is there any way to stop this?

You might try asking on /k/ but if I were working on that weapon I would try cold blue instead of spray paint.

Is flywheel based energy storage for my house feasible?

It's an idea I've toyed with in my head for some time, but I have no idea if there are any off the shelf units that could work or if it's reasonably possible to build your own.

>reasonably possible to build your own
i wouldn't want to be the neighbor of someone that diy'd a home capacity flywheel storage system
>>
im interested in alternative storage for data and energy too OP

checkout youtube diy flywheels

i saw one where a guy used a weighted oil drum for example
>>
>>1190858
This will not work in the slightest because you have to expend (and continue to expend) energy to spin the flywheel. Also I wouldn't imagine it lasting more than an hour even with magnetic bearings, you would need a massive flywheel or a series of them to provide ample power.

I'm buying a house today. The closing is this afternoon. I'll be doing another walk through before that happens. What major things should I look out for that I may not have already thought of?

•Roof Leak stains.
•Backflow stains around bathroom.
•Foundation cracks.
•Doors that face one direction not shutting or being stuck (suggesting foundation subsidence).
•Knowing shut off valves/meters locations.
•Flood plain grade (even though it is on a hill, the driveway may be angled incorrectly for instance causing mini-flooding during a downpour.)

I think those are the most important things.

Neighbors... look at the economic situation of those around the house to get an idea of security measures you Will need to take. How much of your sidewalk/driveway can town construction rip up and destroy. Think about invasive species near the house and distance to different services such as police, fire, medical, school, food and other delivery services. Major things are important but a bunch of small things can really break a good house. I.e. is it worth buying a cheap house but good-looking house if crime rates are ridiculous. Just things that come to my mind. Oh and the heater/ac/boiler
>>
And u might even think about knocking and asking the neighbors what they know. It would be worth an awkward exchange
>>
>>1190659
>>1190660
Good idea. It is a very small town and the house is located literally in the middle of "downtown" with the courthouse, sheriffs dept, jail, 2 lawyer's offices, and magistrate building boxing in the house. It is probably the safest house in the entire town.

Crossposting from /o/ just in case

Asking as a car noob that just remembered this sight has a place for mechanical advice stuff; how long can I leave a car on the jack it comes with and have it be reasonably safe. I didn't know auto places closed so early so I've got an Acura MDX with a removed passenger side front wheel sitting on the complimentary car jack.

It'll be fine anon.
source: I work around this stuff everday.

Lower it onto some wooden or concrete blocks that can support its weight. What would you do if the jack slipped and it was sitting on the ground

For fucks sake. Jack stands you dipshit. Jacks of all kinds fail, takes effort to fuck up a jack stand.

Hi, first time on your lovely board; nice to be here.

I wish to mount a firearm on the wall of my bedroom (above the window so it's out of sight from outside), it weighs about 3.5 kg (8lbs) and I'm thinking of a two point mount, one behind the grip and one under the gas block.

what are some recommendations for strong DIY wall fixtures? :)

Thanks for any help.

I work in the concrete business and I was looking into nuclear shelter building using lead ore as an aggregate for radiation shielding. I haven't ever taken a concrete engineering course but I was wondering if using lead in place of a normal aggregate (gravel/rock) would compromise compression and tensile strength.

As far as I see, glue is needed here. But what kind? The frame is aluminium, so I need something that will work for life here...

>frame
It's the 'seatpost' that's broken. Just buy a new one for $9 on amazon.

It's usually made of aluminum, so you'd need to TIG weld it. No TIG welder is going to do that for less than $9 (or 50 for that matter).
>>
>>1188715
JB weld? Remember to sand both surfaces and remove residues with alcohol before applying.
>>
>>1188751

Shut the fuck up if you have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

>>1188715
That's a press fit inteface that is usually bonded with a two part epoxy. Clean off the residue on both parts of the fitting, get any metal bonding epoxy you want and put it back together.

I own a bike shop and you see this quite regularly on cheaper seat posts. the fit is usually pretty poor between the two and the bond breaking down from rocking/rotational stresses among other things like heat and cold.

We especially see this a lot more during late fall early spring when people are out riding in freezing weather.

Hello /diy/
I'm an EE for a company in Berkeley, and I get to design my first board for the company
it is simple, just a battery tester
I decided I want to use an atmega32u4, since it is easy to use in the arduino environment.
Upon the proposal, the lead Software Engineer stopped me immediately and told me I had to choose a PIC. I didn't quite see the reason for this, as the ability to program in the IDE is rather straight forward, and IMO simpler to get your project "going."
Every product in the company has a PIC running in it, and they dont want to change that. should I try and stand up for the 32U4? or just accept the PIC?

This is going to sound harsh, apologies in advance.
Nobody gives a fuck about your gimpy battery tester.
Nobody in the company needs it, is interested in it, will ever use it.
The entire purpose of you making this is to make sure you know enough to work on other projects. That's my assumption.
If you build it using things nobody in the company uses, has ever used, will ever use, has tested in production, then it doesn't prove your competence, it doesn't show you can work in their team or on their projects.

Many people think of arduino is for babyish retards and art students. That is obviously true but its not the reason your boss is telling you to avoid it.

Any time you introduce something new to a project there are problems, errata that people aren't aware of, teething problems people should have foreseen but inevitably didn't. Tldr it costs money and resources.

Tried tested and true. That's the way forward. Prove you are flexible enough to work something new then once you gain trust you can innovate.
>>
>>1187142
wouldn't developing time cost more than the ic itself?

>>1187144
The battery tester is used for QC'ing Purposes, so internal use only. The current method of testing them takes up about 8 minutes of testing, while automating it can take <1 minute (hopefully 30 seconds)
The benefit of is reducing development time, not necessarily product cost.

Don't listen to him you're gonna need one more scoop

So feel free to crush my hopes and dreams.

I have little to no DIY experience. Only a few hand tools. But I'd like to build pic related. I can handle the electronics, but the woodworking is going to be a learning experience.

My question is- would I be able to accomplish it with only a circular saw, jigsaw, and a power drill? Or would I need more than that?

Also, I guess any general advice for a newbie would be appreciated

You can do it with just that.

Protip: Use cabinet or furniture grade plywood, not MDF. It's lighter, lasts better, won't fall apart if you get it wet and easier to screw and glue.
>>
>>1186318
Will it say cabinet or furniture grade, or is there a code or something else to look for to indicate that?
>>
>>1186321

Just regular plywood and not OSB/MDF/Hardboard etc. It will be marked specifically as "plywood" and also say which type of wood it is made with. The regular stuff is usually spruce.

Hey /diy/, /mu/ here. I've been recently struck with a thought really interests me. I want to do research how being underwater affects the perception and creation of music. I did some research on submarines large enough for this, and all I learned is thay positive pressure is key to sucess, and that a production sub that large costs an ungodly ammount. I came here and it hit me. Page 1. Shipping container. It's made out of metal, it's designed to withstand exposure to water, and they're designed to withold the pressure of 12 other containers full of shit on top of them.

They'd honestly be perfect. They're not aerodynamic but I only need it to be stationary once it's under water.

I did a bunch of research on them before for dwellings and the only real drawback was the cost of shipping(ironic) into the countryside. But for this project it would be much cheaper because I'll be working on the project a couple miles down from the harbor they'll come in at. I have a truck driver buddy who has access to a flat bed trailer.

But I'm getting off topic as to why I'm posting. I need a little advice.

1. Should I reinforce the inside with some x's? Will that add too much weight?

2. How do I get electeicity down there? I need to be able to power a guitar amp and a record player, or an mp3 player and blue tooth stereo.

3. How do I get air down there enough for 2-3 people? Is a connection to the surface necessary? I need all the room i can for a bass amp and a drum set.

I plan on welding all the seems shut and pressure testing it. I would like to add one of the cool holes in the bottom that you can swim through.

My budget is about $4000 i have left from student loans. I have a corded drill, a 110 amp welder, a hammer, some channel locks, and other basic stuff. I wouldn't be opposed to buying the "brake press" thing from harbor freight if i need to. Some guy recommended it to me my first time looking at shipping containers.

Thanks in advance.

>positive pressure
You mean having a ambient-pressure sub? You put an oversized scuba regulator inside the container along with a beefy air tank and you could theoretically go down to 66m just with a little silicone. I wouldn't advise it, but there's no reason not to, apart from the expensive setup, and potential inability to resurface if you can't drop your ballast. You'll need a 1.5m^3 storage tank to store all the air that going down to 66m would require, so have fun with that. Oh and there's also a guy here building his own atmospheric pressure submarine: >>1167466
