Generally super easy job

I think we get looked down upon and hated mostly by the lower middle class because we do the same easy work for double their pay.

There is strong job security (work public transportation and literally impossible to get fired), great benefits, good pension plan and there is room for upward movement (for those willing to go). A lot of employees complain about nepotism and they're not wrong, but nepotism doesn't completely stop you from moving up.

A lot of it is based on seniority more than skill though.

You'll never get passed upper middle class in a government position (which you probably would not have unless you were in a top school for STEM or medical anyways).

It can be pretty boring and routine though. Days tend to be the same but atleast if your schedule says 40 hours, you can expect those 40 hours and anything over is overtime. You don't have to bust your ass as you would in private sector because your boss told you to stay

What do you do in government? I think government is a little bloated especially those lower middle class jobs. Janitors in the public sector make 60% more than private sector janitors in my area not including benefits.
Not that I'm the savior of my state, but I think I'd actually be contributing as much as I give. I had a high GPA, competent, and diligent worker. With experience to boot.

so long as you've got electronic exchanges and open competition to provide liquidity to them then there will be firms competing to do that - being fast is generally a good idea when providing liquidity

regulators are on top of a lot of it as politicians have piled on pressure for them to do 'something'... there isn't a specific problem with 'HFT' in a general sense - it encompasses a wide range of activities, but there have been some dubious practices at times - flash orders are often cited as one example... but most criticism of HFT is completely overblown. Unless people want to go back to open outcry exchanges or the NYSE's old specialist system then HFT is here to stay in some form or another.

Basically they try to make very tiny profits every time you trade. All the top banks are doing mostly HFT and very little prop trading.

I have one friend whose parents gave him a job at their multimillion dollar company. He constantly brags about the money he is making and the power he has. I'm considering dropping him as a friend. I wouldn't call it "jealousy" but I'm definitely irritated by him.

I have another friend who is 100% humble and just a nice easy going guy. He just made $100k in a real estate deal. I wasn't even slightly jealous. I'm happy for him, and hope he has lots of success.

Just depends on how a person handles it to me.

If you like computers, major in network admin or systems architecture or something similar. Hell, if you plan to start your own company, you probably don't even need to graduate college; just get a couple certifications and start selling yourself to small firms; offer web hosting and/or to set up a shared file server, etc.

Look into this for potential degree programs; make sure you stick to nonprofit accredited institutions though. Don't get a degree from a for-profit; it will cost you more, and will be worth less in the business world.
