It is IMPOSSIBLE to make good money in the UK.

Most entry level jobs here pay 15k or less, even graduate jobs you will be lucky to hit 25k. Even then it is heavily taxed.

All these Americans talking about earning 100k easy, you would be very very lucky and very successful to earn even 30k in the UK.

There is no enterprise, no easy startups, everything is cloaked in red tape, there are no doors open.

Your best bet in the UK is to entirely DEDICATE your life to becoming a doctor and then maybe one day you will earn over 50k, but you will get your first pay packet when you're in your thirties!

It's seems impossible because you think it's impossible. Problems are unanswered questions, you just haven't figured out the answer.

I've been earning 40k+ since 19 in London programming. No degree. Taxes are a bitch though. I pay over 50% on some of my salary if you include NI.

What's are the best ways to make money with software development, without having to,

1. Live in an overcrowded progressive fiefdom.
2. Work for someone else doing mindless bullshit I could teach an autistic female baboon to do.

I enjoy solving problems, sometimes I go to codeeval and solve the "advanced" problems with the lowest completion rates just for shits and giggles. I've also made somewhat of a name for myself among those I've worked with over the last 12 or so years, as someone of the utmost competence.

The problem is, I can't stand mindless repetitive bullshit, and I can't stand working on shitty code or with shitty coders, irrespective of the compensation. I'd rather be out farming or doing carpentry (both of which I enjoy) for a fraction of the pay, than sitting in a chair knocking hours off my life expectancy every minute while trying to figure out how the person who wrote the completely undocumented mess I'm looking at manages to breath on their own.

So, my question is: Do any of you internet captains of industry, or perhaps those of you more versed in the broader software marketplace than I -- have any suggestions for how I might capitalize on the skills I've developed, without falling prey to the aforementioned cons?

The holy grail for me would be an idea that's objectively worth developing, that is both unique and challenging, and which would otherwise require an enormous upfront investment. If it can satisfy those precepts and still manage to have a "lulz" factor, I'll be in heaven.

You can always find something that a client or business needs developed, search around freelancer sites for a quote, then charge the client 3x that amount. Your only responsibility would be managing the project since development is outsourced.

Taxes and money cant even leave the system.

Youd have to go to g2a or loot market to convert your steam dollars into real dollars, and expect a 10% loss.

You can also only manage so many items a day.

Mybe worth looking inti fir third worlders trying to get their hands on some usd, but then also check out cs and dota markets

I have about 8500$ in a Wells Fargo everyday checking account. It was a savings acct. at one point but I withdrew from it frequently instead of loading my checking account with cash; so the bank changed it into a checking acct.
My question is, is it worth taking my $ out of a checking/savings and putting it into some sort of low risk investment account? Something in Vanguard possibly?
Bottom line, what kind of investment account could double as a savings?
thanks /biz/
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
How much risk are you willing to take? When do you think you may need to use some or all of it? If this is all your savings, you may want to keep some of it liquid in case of emergencies.

I.e. can you handle the risk of your savings going down by 5 to 25% in exchange for potential upside? If so legging into a conservative stock fund might be good.

Or do you just want to keep it safe/whole and you are not as worried about inflation eating away at its value, etc? If so, just keep it where its at or look for higher interest rate savings accounts at other banks.

The only investment that could double as a savings would be a very low risk investment, therefore low return.

Sorry for the generic answer, thats all I got, but would love to hear any other suggestions people have, so bump.
>>
I would take half that money and flip a couple cars. I think the dealer license you need to bid at a lot of auctions is like $500 though. Might need to flip a few a year.

Yeah considering putting 15k in Vanguard right now

The poverty line makes no sense to me.

http://obamacarefacts.com/federal-poverty-level/

The poverty line for a single household, which I assume means an individual living on their own, is at $11,880 per year, or $990 per month. Who the hell can rent a place for $990 without any roommates? Having roommates would mean they're not a single person-household, so who is included in this bracket? Homeless people?

There are many apartments and condos near me in arizona that rent from 675-1000 a month. You can get a new 2 room apartment here for about 950.

Its easily doable.

I recall the rent at my last apartment was $350/month and included electric, water, and sewer. It looked like a refurbed prison, but I actually enjoyed living there.

Why is it so difficult to find a good business partner, /biz/?

> one partner has self-esteem issues. Constantly trying to put us out of biz because he's scared of something new each day
> another is a liar to suffer his ego problems
> another has no interest working, just wants to be your partner
> this one has tons of knowledge and no ambition

Come on guys, it's not rocket science, it's getting the money out of their pockets and into ours.

well imagine you've got boomers, except instead of hiring smarter faster younger, lost gens, gen x ers or millenials, they all kept their jobs instead of being booted up to management.

It takes pretty much a death or incapacitation to keep a man from work.
Oh women aren't expected to work much so only 50% of the labor force is operational.

The biggest waste for an employee is often the time it takes to train them. Companies haven't had to make this kind of capital investment in a long time and it will shock the system.

Combine this with one of the highest propensities to save and a debt to gdp ratio that is obscene.
The system cannot absorb very much systemic shock.
The shock is coming. the question isn't how badly the system will break but how soon they can put it back together again.

After we take 4chan, we will swiftly move to the other chans buying them out as well and only then will /biz/ be board supreme!
Also when do you think gold will peak? We all know it's currently at around $1300 however I thought it would climb even more due to market uncertainty.

What's the best way to bargain with a jeweler? There's a specific ring that I need, and only this one jeweler has it. I got some gold jewelry I want to trade for it to offset the cost, and I know for a fact that his prices are negotiabe. Do I:

A) Ask for the ring price, haggle him down, THEN offer to trade my gold for it?
B) Let it be known up front that I have gold to trade and then commence haggling?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.

Negotiate too low for your first time, then let him propose, then give him 25% less than that.
