Going to London and Paris this july

Is there any low budget resto that you can recommend?

Hard level: preferebly a place that is not at the periphery of the cities

Thanks for advance

>>
I'm going to London too. Is it true that English food is bland as hell?
>>
How low is the budget? When I was in London we were dining every day at the pub next to our hotel, called The Goose Walthamstow. There's a special offer every day, main dish (enormous) + beer for 5-6 pounds or so. They also had delicious english breakfast for 2-3 £
>>
Fancy option- try Brasserie Zedel, it's bang in the centre of town, looks terrifically grand, and is pretty cheap. On the outside it looks like a tiny shit cafe, go downstairs and it's a massive dininghall shitfuck really good. The food is cheap as well (about a tenner for a good meal) decent fish and chips or chopped steak (French style food funnily enough).

FYI, there is a cheap restaurant/pub chain called Weatherspoons which offers good value food. It's not brilliant by any means, but it's cheap and get's the job done- and they're abundant all over the country- it's a fallback / goto. My recommendation in the centre is Posini's Café just off Oxford street. These type of 'immigrant' run places are still abundant outside of the centre, but they're slowly dying in favour of coffee places. My opinion: you can't beat the variety and flavour, but it's a bit greasy.

>>1260494

Probably, it's quite greasy and brown. I don't think it's too bad, but I'm British, so I know roughly what to order and where. A lot of people visiting London (that I've met) tend to just walk in anywhere and get fish and chips. Supposedly, it's quite different coming from a traditional shop on the coast than from a chain restaurant in London- but there's so much good non-English food in London that it's not a big deal.

Poverty like you've never seen it before. 5 months is a loooong time to spend in India, have fun with that lol.

I mostly just like how chaotic the place is. It hardly functions as a society and yet the people don't descend into anarchy because they're mostly alright folks.

What do you guys think of people who legitimately never travel at all? Some people literally don't even leave their home town. There are some people in my dad's old town where he grew up who are like that. They have literally never left their rural little city group area, ever. Never left their own county, state, or country.

This is absurd to me. Do any of you know anyone like this?

I've been to about 35 countries since 2013 and will go to at least another five before the year is over.

Whether other people travel or not doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

If somebody can be content and happy sitting at home and hanging out with the same group of people day after day, for years on end, good for them. I might not be able to relate to their interests and decisions, but I can't criticize them, either.

My dad hasn't left the United States since he went on his honeymoon with my mom over a quarter-century ago. He uses most of his vacation days to visit relatives in New England and go hunting in the same places "up north," year after year. I was surprised when he took a trip to Hawaii earlier in the year.

But my dad isn't ignorant. He hasn't traveled, but he has a great grasp on geography and politics. Just because he hasn't been many places outside the United States doesn't mean he's a drooling idiot who couldn't tell a Mexican from a Mongolian.

I think Millennials and Gen Xers are really pushing the "wanderlust" meme to an unrealistic level. A lot of people make it sound as if a person can't be fulfilled if they never leave their country, without recognizing that it takes a certain level of privilege as well as a particular mindset to step far away from where you've come from.

All things considered, I think it's good when people who can travel choose to do so, but I don't think it's bad if they don't, either. What's more important is whether they're living moral lives and are giving back to their community, no matter if it's adopted or constant.
>>
>>1260799
You are describing the overwhelming majority of the world.. Traveling is a luxury.
>>
>>1260799
I'm not surprised there are people who don't feel any wanderlust at all and are content staying in their own country and I don't really care — different strokes and all that, even if it sounds like a horrible existence to me. But what blows my mind is when you meet someone who hasn't left his bumfuck nowhere town in a decade. You'd think they at least visit their relatives once in a blue moon. There's weddings, baptisms, funerals, christmas and a metric fuckton of other family gatherings you're expected to show up at and have to travel for.

Guys, how's South Africa? My gf wants to go there on holyday but i read very conflicting opinions about the place. We're talking about Johannesburg and Cape Town, are they safe? I heard of a lot of racial tension and violence in the streets, so i wanted to know if it's tourist-friendly

>>
>>1259970
Cape Town calling. For tourists who are not complete idiots, it's safe. There's not a whole lot to see in Jo'berg; it's mostly popular for shopping and nightlife. Cape Town is a much more attractive tourist destination, and see if you can visit some of the national parks like Kruger. Where you go really depends on what you two are interested in; Cape Town and the winelands region are great for food and wine and sightseeing. If you're into nature or surfing there's plenty of options, too.

You don't wander around the streets drunk late at night here, you drive from A to B, but if you're American you'll be used to that anyway I imagine. And If you stand in the middle of the street looking like a clueless tourist people will take advantage of you, but most violence happens in very poor areas that you would have no reason to go to.

I'm planning to hitchhike around Europe for 2 weeks and I'm not expecting any rain. Is it good to just carry my sleeping bag and leave the tent home?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.

You can almost always find shelter when you need it in Europe. Cow sheds, tool sheds, bus stops...that being said, a tarp weighs nothing, so there's no reason not to bring one, plus some paracord to string it up (practice this at home before you try doing it in the dark in the pissing rain)

Ok /trv/ I am wondering what you all like watching as far as content on youtube relating to travel? I have added yet another to the 3 billion existing travel channels.

Me, the gf, and a good friend are going on a big 8 month trip South America and Asia next year and I thought YouTube [read: video] would be a good way to save it all for us to rewatch in the future (instead of another fb album of 400 pictures, we have also started a branded instagram that we are throwing old pictures from our past trips up in in the meantime)

So far, we are doing videos and I am getting used to what that means in terms of shooting and editing so I am doing videos until we leave.
Other trips we are doing until then. Gear Reviews. One about what the channel is. A tourist in your own town video, some about food, the gf is super into makeup so she is doing some videos for women and makeup stuff. etc etc

So long ass story short, even though the YouTube is really for us, I wanna produce some useful content that someone else might enjoy. So what do you guys look for in a youtube travel channel? What videos do you look for most? What do you like to see?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'm fucking tired of marketing research threads. We're not gonna do your research for you for free.

Keep doing your thing, if it's good, we'll watch it. Authenticity is what makes some people big on youtube, you cannot construct authenticity like this. Now pay me a beer.
>>
I had a similar idea to you OP really, have now done basically video diaries for my past 3-4 trips.

Some advice:

Taking videos is easy af, though sometimes getting a camera out and shooting some video can be weird, especially when you are alone. Also worth noting that some places wont allow videos to be taken and thus you occasionally miss some good content.

Editing sometimes takes 3-4 hours, often you get a backlog of clips because you are busy for a few nights in a row and cant do any editing, it can take months when you get back home to fix the backlog of vids.

Never expect your videos to look nice, they will always be shaky and very amateur at best, sound quality is often not the best because its hard to do proper sound filtering without good equipment and software.

Finally, never expect to get any views or it to draw any attention on youtube, there are hundreds of travel vids out there on what you are doing, chances are nobody will watch yours. If your a media student, you might be able to do a bit better than he rest of us and might be able to market you videos to get a bunch of views.

If your going to do this, do what I did, I made videos because it way easier to show my friends and family what I did and I also didn't like writing a diary. My video's are public, but i didn't expect many views. I didn't do it to get youtube views or inspire anyone else, that's often a unintended benefit that rarely happens (funnily enough, even though my videos were pretty shit, a few clips I shot were picked up by a local TV station for a news report).

To put this in perspective, over 3 years I've got only gotten 2100 views from 40 videos.
>>
People subscribe not just because they liked your video, but because they see a bunch of similar videos on your channel and expect you to make more. So covering various topics from gear review to your gf's makeup on one channel would be a mistake.

Where in Asia has the cheapest food?

/fit/izen looking to move to an Asian country for a year and go on a mean bulk. Was thinking Thailand since a lot of Australians go there for this purpose already, but don't want to lose myself in hookers and lady boys
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1261854
If you're talking about traditional markets and cooking local ingredients for yourself, nearly everywhere in Asia has cheap food. Cambodia and Laos, which have limited productive agricultural land owing to mountains, landmines, and massive industrial sugar plantations, among other factors, and a lot of food imports as a result, are a bit more expensive than Thailand, but all are still cheap by international standards.

If you're talking about cooked food/street food/restaurants, Vietnam is about the cheapest place I've experienced.

If you want to follow your Strayan brethren to Bali, Ubud, although full of annoying hippies, flashpackers, and a growing army of digital nomad schmucks, has some great healthy food options--lots of vegan stuff, among other things. Not the cheapest, but cheaper than Australia.
>>
>>1261934
Oh, and there are negligible hooker/ladyboy scenes in Vietnam and Laos (where it is technically illegal to sleep with locals, but the cities still have streetwalkers). There is presumably a sex tourist scene in Bali, but I wasn't looking and didn't notice it.

Even in Thailand it's very easy to avoid that stuff--it attracts a lot of international attention, but it's a minuscule, peripheral sliver of the country as a whole. Don't seek it out, don't go to the tiny pockets of the country that it dominates, and you can easily forget it's there.

Same with Cambodia, although I like Thai food more and the sleazy parts of the cities are comparatively somewhat larger (because the cities are much smaller).

Most people withdraw money from an ATM nowadays and face the transaction fee for money exchange. Exchangers are known risks of robbery, fraud, and otherwise money launderers, so avoid them in conspicuous places for people watching, and already know the rates and what you want to do upfront. You can even use an ATM in the airport for the initial reasons to take transport, tip and such.
