Are you a backpack or suitcase traveler? It's my first trip, I'll be traveling for a month and wondering what is best.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Backpack, I have a 35 lt, that expands into a 45lt.
I spend too much time on the move to lug a suitcase around..
>>
backpack (not actually a backpack but a duffle bag) if the destination's within europe, or is some seedy area (egypt, india)
otherwise suitcase
>>

Depends on what you're doing and where you go.
I'm a minimalistic cabin trolly + purse traveler. No matter if I go to places for a weekend or 3 months, I just wash my stuff or buy additional stuff as needed.
I just carry a set of change cloths, my phone, charger, powerbank, credit card and passport.

opinions... if you had 2-3 weeks to travel, and the options were Sicily, a Greek island or islands of your choosing, or Croatia. What would you pick and why?

Ok, obviously my thread is a fail... I guess what Im asking about is what are the big differences between these places, I have been to a few Greek islands. For a 30 something year old and a girlfriend.. looking for arts, music, food, beaches, and fun. Is there any big things to consider here?
>>
>>1261450
I don't know, but Sicily always looked like a dump to me. I'd rather see any failed greek island than Sicily. I'm a humble man though, so I'd really spend all my time sitting on the beach thinking about Odysseus.
>>
I have been to all three and could not recommend Croatia more, great culture, food and island hopping great. Greek Islands are also good, but chose the island carefully as some are just soul less party destinations. Italy is more of a culture and food destination and I'd recommend tuscany If you're going there.

So my dad is a pilot, and he flies to Hawaii as his main route. Later this week, I'm going to try to catch a flight with him on stand-by, and he'll come back three days later.

Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning, I'll be alone on Oahu/in Waikiki before flying to Kauai to reunite with my dad.

I've been before, so I plan on spending a good chunk of this time just relaxing in a nice room, hitting up the beach, eating well, and going to bars. But I'm open to ideas, even if there's better bars or beaches. I'm a pretty decent looking 30 year old with a good job and no girlfriend or anything. I'd rather not do something overly exhausting or expensive. How's the Tinder game? What else should I do?

Bring some nice clothes and check out Rumfire, SKYY and Addiction for nightclubs. Pint and Jigger is a chill cocktail bar. If you want to traumatize yourself check out Alley cats on Kuhio ave. If you want to effortless sex check out bp for massage parlors. Yokohama is a nice beach that no one really goes to on the West side. Waikiki beach is always packed with tourists and lastly Lanikai beach in Kailua is decent/relaxed but still touristy. You don't want to go to a locals only beach. You'll get jumped by a Polynesian tranny

Do we have anyone here who has worked professionally in the middle east? I am likely taking a job in the region and am still expected to wear slacks or jeans and a button up shirt. What brands do I need to be looking at to minimize my chances of heatstroke? I googled this, but the normie experience seems to top out at 100F and nothing in that ballpark seemed geared towards professionals.

I come from Wyoming for fucks sake.

I don't have a picture that relates to heat stroke.

You have to get used to drinking a lot of water, and don't stand in the fucking sun if you don't have to. If you're feeling dizzy you fucked up. I've lived all over the Sonoran desert. Just don't come out in the middle of the day.

Two of my friends work in Qatar now (yeah....), one in Dubai.
What they do is they barely leave air conditioned places. They always use their cars or cabs, don't just walk outside.
When they go to the beach/hotel pool areas, they stay in the shade.

One of them works 'outside' a lot, which means staying at air conditioned tents.

Keep hydrated.

I hear that now, during Ramadan, the Muslim colleagues keep collapsing. They have a special hidden place where they could drink, but they don't, so they end up in the hospital.

I've worked in the Middle East before.

Chances are you will be indoors for the whole time, Arabic countries dont give a shit about energy consumption, they will happily blast the AC 2/4 on max.

In the rare case you are working outside (maybe as a equipment operator or technician on complex machinery), you can wear what you want most of the time (unless your a businessman doing an inspection).

I ended up wearing Arabic style clothing when working in Saudi Arabia because it really was much better in terms of minimising heat and sunburn when compared to western clothing. I was on the extreme end of the job spectrum in terms of spending time outside in direct heat though (Geologist), so I don't expect you to need to as you wont spend much time outside.

Hey /trv/!
I'm going to the Balkans for a couple of weeks with some friends. Our current plan is Timisoara -> Belgrade -> Sarajevo -> Zagreb -> Budapest. What do you guys think about this route? Also, what is the best mode of transportation in the area? I've heard about the Balkan Flexi Pass and how you can buy it there (instead of online) for about 50 euros, is it worth it or is it better to stick to busses? What are some do's and do not's to keep in mind? What are some places to not miss and places to definitely avoid? Thanks for any info!

>route
Awful. You're literally missing the best parts.

>flexi pass
Doesn't cover Croatia. Appears to be issued on site, yes. Also apparently it dumps you on the border, idk.

I find buses faster (100%) and more reliable.

So, /trv/, it'll be in August when I make my first time on a plane, from Montevideo, Uruguay to Europe to make this path in 8 days and back. I know most people here make advanced questions and they're already experienced in travelling - could you help a newfag? The furthest I have traveled is to Rio de Janeiro, 1800 km from my city.

Basic recommendations for this experience?

You'll lost two days struggling with jet lag, anon.
>>
>>1261001
Honestly I would rather stay 3-4 days in Madrid and catch a flight to Paris to stay there for another 3-4 days if you've never been to Europe instead of driving across two countries looking at the boring highway.
As the other anon said you will lose at least one full day struggling with the Jetlag.
>>
>>1261026
>>1261028
This is retarded.
Even if you don't sleep on the plane, just stay awake (by going outside and doing something) until the time you would normally sleep back home. You will barely be more tired than normal the next day.

Done this multiple times flying from Aus to US, Aus to Europe, BsAs to Europe.

Over the past couple months I started thinking about countries that I would want to move to (or at least visit) if I ever get tired of being in the U.S, for now I've narrowed it down to Spain and Japan.
It's hard for me to choose because on one hand I like the overall look of Japan and I'm kind of into the history and culture of the country. Then on the other there's Spain which seems nice cause it seems to have a sort of slow and chilled out lifestyle and atmosphere, I kind of dig the look of the country but I'm not much into it's history or anything.
What are some thoughts and opinions you guys might have to help me decide? Any help is appreciated

>What are some thoughts and opinions
My thoughts and opinion is the same as usual, that people who are "tired" of the US are low IQ, and your opinion, as well as your logical reasoning, is subpar. So, any musings you have on Japan or Spain are both really not worth anyone's time. It's already obvious you're not a mental giant.

>likes how countries kind of like look, overall

Go get a good education and job, and try to understand your emigration idea is not going to happen to two countries with strict policies no matter how they "look" to you. It is probably, overall, like your good education and job won't really happen, because it is the foundation to actually liking where you live. It's what adults have told you since you were a child. Time to believe that the road to happiness is hard work not idle escapist dreaming.
>>
>>1261000
I didn't say I'm tired of the U.S now and I probably won't be but if there comes a time where I do then I plan to move to these places.
And as for moving I'm willing to work as hard as I need to fully emigrate if I do end up actually wanting to stay there.
>>
>>1260998
>I've narrowed it down to Spain and Japan.
Two countries with literally nothing in common

>It's hard for me to choose because on one hand I like the overall look of Japan
Do you speak Japanese?

>and I'm kind of into the history and culture of the country.
>kind of into the culture
I'm sure you'll fit right in then lol

>Then on the other there's Spain which seems nice cause it seems to have a sort of slow and chilled out lifestyle and atmosphere, I kind of dig the look of the country but I'm not much into it's history or anything.
Do you speak Spanish? Do you know what the unemployment rate is like there?

>What are some thoughts and opinions you guys might have to help me decide? Any help is appreciated
You will never move to either.

/trv/, your my only hope.
I was thinking about taking a vacation and visit the Great Wall of China, and visit Beijing.
Anything I should know? I currently live in Singapore, so I am exposed to their culture and how they are, so no issues there.
Any advice would be appreciated and also taking a plane from Beijing to Huairou aince bus takes a whooping 10 hours.
Thanks!

Brit here, I went to Beijing a couple of years ago.

If you visit the Great Wall, make sure you don't go to Badaling, it's overcrowded, tacky and mostly a reconstruction anyway.

The wall at Mutianyu is much less crowded, although it's still restored, so less authentic, if that's your thing. It's a much better experience than Badaling though.

When I went to Beijing a couple of years ago, I went with an agency, Dandelion Hiking, and went camping on one of the unrestored bits of the wall a couple of hours' drive away from Beijing. It's a bit more expensive than just getting public transport to Mutianyu, but it was an absolutely amazing experience watching the sun rise over the Wall.

>>
>>1261047
Is badaling mostly restored?
In any case, I only got 3 days on the ground, so I can only visit the wall for one and then Beijing for my rest of the time there.
An6thing else I should watch out for?
>>
>>1261100

Well if you're only there for a short while, I'd recommend going to Mutianyu.

Yes, Badaling is almost 100% restored. It'll be absolutely packed with Chinese tourists, and you probably wouldn't have a very good time. It is the easiest bit of Wall to get to, though.

Hey guys, I need to spend the winter practising my german (3-4 months), so I'm looking for comfy german-speaking cities to relocate to when the time comes. I guess Switzerland is gonna be too expensive for my budget, so Germany and Austria is what I get. Budget is about 1500 euros/month, transportation is not an issue since I'm currently in Spain, can get tons of flights.

Now a bit more details about what I need: Some snowboarding in the area would be nice, but not a must. Same goes for snow. Mid-size, which means basically any city but Berlin and Vienna. Preferably with students and a lively scene, somewhat of an international community too, but this will not be my priority. Beautiful girls a plus. Tons of cultural activities and historical places in the surroundings would be nice. Close to the french border would be great too, for short getaway trips.

thanks guys!

Btw do not forget German is also spoken in Liechtenstein, Alta Adige Italia (Südtirol) and East Belgium (Ostbelgien)

So I bought a return ticket to El Salvador for less than 200 bucks. I have 2 weeks with my girlfriend, were on a budget.

What is a better route? Go north to Guatemala and Mexico or south to Costa Rica? Anybody got recommendations for the region?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
dude, you only got two weeks. Travelling there is slow, you don't want to spend all your time on the bus. Just stay in Salvador.

If you want to add something awesome nearby, go to Copan ruinas in Honduras. It's close to the border.
>>
Places are not too far apart down there, I recommend going south and enjoy Costa Rica and the dirt cheap Nicaragua, where you can be a king with 100 bucks
>>
>>1261228
I'll probably fly to costa rica, go to nicaragua and fly back to el salvador from there. I'm not really looking to stay in El Salvador, I don't want to get robbed or worse.

Where's /trv/ going next? How'd you pick the country or countries and what are you going to do there?

For me, I'm going to Mexico for three weeks between June and July. After that, I'm taking a flight to Tanzania, staying for a month, and then doing a week in Zambia to chill and see Victoria Falls. Heading out from Lusaka for about two weeks in Addis Ababa and Ethiopia and then another ten or fifteen days in Cairo. Culminating in India and spending three months there for my eighth visit to the country.

Mostly tourism stuff, but I have a friend in the Peace Corps on Zanzibar island I'm going to stay with for about a month. Pretty excited, TBQH.

Going to Italy for a month in just over a week. Two weeks in Tuscany, a week on the Amalfi Coast, and a week in Sicily. My wife has a sabbatical from her job, we wanted somewhere relatively easy and child-friendly for our first big international trip with the kids (5 year old twins who have previously only been to Mexico), we speak some Italian, she really likes the food (she's vegetarian, and tires quickly of her options in Asia, Africa, and Latin America) we like wine, I like coffee, we like history.
>>
>>1260843
Oh, and regarding what we plan to do, we plan to force the kids to experience one historical or cultural thing per day, and otherwise just sit around drinking while the kids run around and do kid stuff.
>>
Going to Japan in October for a week. Didn't get to go last year. Turned out better than expected because I paid less than I would have last year. I'm decent at the language, so just going for tourism stuff. Really excited, but at the same time, nervous because it's my first international trip.

Hey /trv/.

I live in America and my girlfriend lives in Australia. I want to move to Australia to live with her, because this long distance shit isn't enough for either of us. I just want to know, what EXACTLY do I have to do, to make this move legally?

I have a job and I'm saving up money. I would like to spend as little as possible, so I can arrive in Australia with plenty of money to help her with expenses. Bills, rent, groceries, etc. I'm no bum.

I've looked on different websites and they all say different things about what I might need and I don't know where to start. One site run by this guy, said I'd need 14,000 dollars, but he moved there with furniture, pets, his wife and child, etc. It's just me and a bag full of clothes.

I basically want to do whatever I have to, to VISIT, and then just never leave. I think it would be illegal to do that without renewing my visa, but I can do that. I would like to work down there, to supply an income, but it seems like that's a big fucking can of worms.

Is it as simple as just getting a traveler's visa, a passport, a ticket and flying there? Or is there some other shit I need to do?

Any help would be appreciated, especially from someone that has done this before.

I'd recommend you to break up. I'd be cheaper and more realistic.
>>
>>1260409
Just marry her, tell her it's an immigration marriage not a real marriage and if one day she does feel like you're "The One" you guys can have a do over with flower bouquets, church guests, a white dress etc. And if you guys break up no big deal you can get a divorce once she meets someone else, whatev.

If she's too traditional aka holds the sanctity of marriage into high regard or some BS like that, just find a straight dude that will mary you for a thousand bucks or something then go hos separate way...... I'm assuming gay marriage is legal in Australia as I believe it now is here in the US so everything should work out.

Chose:
2 weeks in Russia, the Philippines, or Puerto Rico
Or 1 week in the UK or Japan

The plane tickets are free, but I have to make the most of modest resources for housing and food. This is a once in a lifetime chance for me (poor American who has never traveled) to hitch a ride with my job to one of these countries. I'll never have enough money to try again, so I want to make the right choice.

I don't drink or party, so I'm really looking for either a fascinating "culture shock" experience, or maybe history museums/sites.

Any advice would be appreciated. Just your best guess based on personal experience, no need for specifics.
