Is digital advancement reaching a plateau? I haven't been paying much attention recently but I'm pretty sure the rapid progress we saw from the late 90's to circa 2015 seems to be slowing to a creep now. Is this a correct assumption, and if so what's causing this?
Actually, what I really want to know is, considering the current trajectory, when will I be able to buy a relatively cheap digital camera that takes images superior to large format film quality? Surely this is inevitable at some point?
Never for the large format bit.
You will /never/ get the same detail that large format offers in digital, screencap this, you will /n e v e r/
as scanning technology advances that old 8x10 negative will only get better and better.
the shitty dslr in your cupboard won't.
It's all mainly because most cameras just have the same sensors from one or two manufactures. I doubt there will be much improvement sensor wise for another 2 years
photography needs to let go of silicon based technology.
photo needs to be chemical.
>>3036990
I actually believe this. It's a trifle to make a bigger sheet of film, but sensors get exponentially more expensive the bigger you go. You can only cram so many sensels onto a sensor before you reach the abbe limit, and then what?
You can always stitch for still scenes, but not for portraiture, nature or action.
Hi /p/ I was wondering do you have any ideas what would an immersive and exciting content to film for an VR expierence?
Fucking a horse.
>>3036920
I second this.
>>3036920
>fucking a horse being the fuckee
how would you emulate the experience of being horsefucked with VR? might need some additional props.
now, for me, reenacting a snuff film setting must be some pretty nutty VR experience. or being Michael Jackson in a huge arena with 100.000 fans cheering your songs and movements.
THIS IS A THREAD FOR HOT TIPS ONLY. I'LL START:
1. Sometimes the light is just going to be coming from the wrong direction and there's nothing you can do about it right then and there. Come back when the sun is in the other part of the sky. Lifted shadows just look fake and lame.
2. Whenever you're going to start a photo session, try to take 20 or 30 unique photos in the first five minutes or so. They don't need to be good or technically great, they just need to be unique. You probably won't even get any keepers out of it, it's just an exercise to get the creative juices flowing and to loosen up your shutter finger. When I say unique, I mean having a motif, composition, approach and statement that's different from the photos preceding it. It's not enough to just have 30 photos of 30 different mailboxes, for instance. You want to have a photo of a mailbox and a deadpan photo of a dumpster and some trees and the sky and maybe a totally out of focus photo, etc etc etc.
3. If you're doing model/fashion photography, it's also extremely helpful to have a bunch of throwaway "burn frames" in the beginning to loosen up both you and the model. Don't jump straight into the serious money poses.
4. In general, be committed to shooting a lot of photos and throwing most of them away. This is true EVEN IF YOU SHOOT FILM. Don't get married to your first shot of a scene. Work it, explore it. Let your camera hang from your side and just walk around it. If you're shooting street, sit there and observe the ebb and flow.
5. If you're walking a long distance, buy good shoes.
6. If you're nervous about shooting in public, try to own the discomfort and work with it. Inconvenience people. Set your tripod up in the middle of the sidewalk. Act like you belong. Would a TV news crew act shy? Probably not, so why should you?

Or Takashi FX521.
Are either of these even available anymore? I cannot for the life of me find them even on ebay or amazon. Looking for a cheap beater digital holga replacement. Or help to guide me to do the same things with a Canon point and shoot, SX160 IS.
Any help is appreciated. Looking for vignettes, blurs and general analog characteristics. Up for suggestions too camera wise.

Any camera with a manual mode can be a "digital Holga"
What I would do is;
Set to manual mode. Use sunny 16 rule and underexpose by one to two thirds of a stop to preserve highlights.
Set your white balance manually. Daylight works in most situations.
So your settings would be something like f/16, 1/125, ISO 100 for a sunny day.
Zone focus 1/3 of the way into the scene if your camera allows it.
This will ensure all of the scene is in focus, because the autofocus system will not work as good as it used to after the next step.
For increased flaring, rub some hubcap polish on the front element to remove the coating.
For lens blur apply a small amount of vaseline to the lens or a filter.
You could try heating up the vaseline, then spritzing it with a small spray bottle for an even coat.
To warm up the image, stetch a pair of tights over the lens.
The farther away from the lens the tights are, the greater the effect. Same goes for vaseline.
For vignette, make a lenshood out of toilet roll. The key is to make it long enough to obscure the sides of the lens.
I'd also turn off the display, and add an optical viewfinder to the hotshoe mount.
Or if you dont have a hot shoe just hot glue it on you stupid fucking nigger.
I feel immense regret after writing this third rate blogger tier garbage and for that I hate you, and wish you nothing but bad luck in life.
Please die, and die soon.

I have to pose like middle top when shooting 4x5. My tripod isn't quite as tall as me, so I have to lower my body a bit. It's not very stable or easy to see the ground glass leaning forward, so I spread my legs and crouch. Makes the process even more conspicuous, which I'm not fond of.

I probably do without thinking about it, now that I think about it. Nothing too crazy though.

I think you were able to put 7 fingers on it, friend. Thank you for your feedback. I'm very happy with how it came out.
Is it just me that enjoys carrying around a bang up camera? Like a cheap lens and camera setup you bought off of eBay or second hand places possibly?
I usually use a 5d mk3 with a sigma 24-105 DG OS for everyday shooting when I'm going somewhere serious.
But my beatup setup cost be around £230 tops. Use an old 550d I got on eBay for £130 (great condition, 6000 shutter count when bought), got myself a tamron 18-200 for £30 and a yongnuo (thought fuck it, I've spent more for a filter) 50mm f1.8 for £40, adding the cost of a couple batteries and a portrait grip and you have my shitty little beatup camera that I take almost everywhere. Even to my more professional shoots. When I'm shooting with families or kids it helps to give the little ones the 550d so they feel less nervous when getting their photo taken. Sometimes I even print out the photos for the parents just for keeps sake.
Post your own beatups :)
-Photo related, that I took with the 550D using the 50mm
>Is it just me that enjoys carrying around a bang up camera?
Yes, you are the only person on earth who does this.
Like a cheap lens and camera setup you bought off of eBay or second hand places possibly?
You are rare in this passion.

I understand, yes, this isnt a humble brag, you're telling us that you just prefer to carry shittier kit, thats what i'm getting here.
>Post your own beatups :)
My beat up is a disposable kodak from 2009 with dog shit stuck in the lense from a farming show i dropped it at. Posting it would mean developing it, which I cant afford because I keep on buying new lenses for my Leica m9 which, you know, I only use for my more professional gigs with children and families.
i have a fujifilm x10 for everyday care, but i'm thinking about selling it, because I don't see myself shooting everything... even street photography I rather do with a DSLR and with a good gear. But always thinking about what to shoot

Yeah I get you, it's mainly for travel purposes too. I'd rather lose £200 than lose £1800 yaknow

It's okay, seems like one of those deep and meaningful fillers that CNN use sometimes about their business/finance reporters.
The background music was a irritating
But composition is the director's job.
It's good. Above average. I wouldn't normally spend this much time critiquing some random person's work on the internet, so take it as a compliment that I'm willing to watch your video 10 times.
It's over-done; you need fewer cool shots with flames and fewer shallow DOF shots and more interview and more shots showing him working. A b-shot for the interview would help.
I think starting the piece with an establishing shot of the shop or maybe that second to last shot --car pulling into parking lot and spinning tires a bit would be better than the shallow DOF car curves. I know that he's talking about the curves of cars but we just don't need DOF porn there. Drop that second shot of the grill. Or maybe even open with a close up on his face grinning while he's talking about how much he loves cars. Connect us emotionally to him.
I like the idea of what you're getting at in the reflection shot at 12sec, but it needs way more sharpening/clarity or something to push the face forward. In any case, I don't think it's a great way to introduce your talent's face.
The shot at 31sec of the mask removal is nice (needs to be brighter), but again, I don't think it's a great way to introduce the talent. Maybe a shot at 10 or 12 sec in with the talent turning a wrench with his bare hands and face visible. Then do reflection and mask removal etc. It's hard to make an emotional connection with a masked dark face or with a reflection.
Drone shot is way over-sharpened.
A little bit more separation with the background on the interview shot would be good. Maybe a touch more light on the subject making the background a tiny bit darker, plus throwing the background out of focus just a touch more.
A shot or two of just his ungloved hands would be solid; hands help establish an emotional connection.
I think your grade is a bit off too -- add a bit of magenta to most of your shots.
Good work. Shoot more.

I was wondering if any of you guys know how to remove certain parts of a video to replace with something else with no green screen

for example in this music video they managed to remove the sky and replace it with static. if anyone knows how to do this on premiere it would help a ton. thanks

i would prefer to do these things in after effects. if there's enough contrast you could do an alpha matte to remove the sky or just to mask the static noise layer.

Anyone edit photos with a BenQ GW2765HT (TheWirecutter's Best 27" Display, Budget Option: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-27-inch-monitor/).
They are $260 shipped for a refurb at the moment. Any reason not to get it, or any better alternatives for the price? I need something more color-accurate than the sub-$100 displays I've been using. Out-of-the-box color accuracy is most important, as I won't be able to afford any calibration devices.
Also, I normally leave my display on 24/7 on my cheapo monitors. Will color accuracy significantly decease on a nicer display if I continue to do this due to color shifting, which I believe is common in white LED lighting?
>>3035687
Trying for colour accuracy without a calibration device is dumb, you won't get close and no panel out of the box is good at this price point.
A 2nd hand spyder/colormunki shouldn't be more than about $50.
>>3035687
> Out-of-the-box color accuracy is most important, as I won't be able to afford any calibration devices.
Dude, if you can't afford a calibrator (don't have it already(?)), then you're doing something wrong in your life or going full retard. And you should never go full retard.
