This is the Film General Thread: "Landscape" Edition.
This is a place to post about anything film related. Processing, scanning, developing, gear, etc is all fair game. Let's fill this thread with images so please include an image with your post.
Have fun! Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.
Any post without an image attached should be ignored because the poster is obviously incompetent.
Anyone else here do any drum scanning on their own? I just got a Tango scanner set up over the last couple months and I'm already thrilled with the results even though I think I have a bit more learning to do.
I'm going to start a thread soon once I have more files edited. Quick question for anyone who wants to see the same shots compared on an Epson vs a drum scanner, what's the best way to do a "fair" comparison of 100% crops when the new scans are twice the resolution? Should I just increase the Epson files to approximately the same size?

Where can I buy cheap film? Also what is considered cheap film? Even the expired film looks expensive to me (8 bucks each one).
>>3033076
Yeah.
I'm wondering if this 70mm cinema film people are talking about can be used with it. I don't want to pay extra for 70mm film whose extra 10mm is taken up by a sound strip or something.
As far as I can tell from eBay, there isn't any normal photographic 70mm film produced. To be honest, I'm not even sure what length of reel I'd want to cut from stock. I'm assuming like with 620 that I'd need to buy some spools.
What I've read is that these lenses are sharp. They're Zeiss lenses. Only bummer is that they're fixed focus, so I can't just slap them on any camera. Might work jury rigged to the RZ67, although I'm not sure if the RZ67 has an internal door-shutter like the hasselblad 500 series does. I'm also unsure whether it would even let me fire without a lens. Supposedly some folks have used the lenses with LF, though it's unlikely that it would cover 4x5 completely.
>>3033066
Deving the film in the OP photo since I bought d76 yesterday. I have no idea what's on the Hp5, Arista 400, or Trix @ 800. Those 3 are at least 2+ years old. Should be exciting. The Trix @ 1600 is half from a typhoon and half from a snowstorm.
Since I'm mixing up d76 today I may start shooting some of the Delta 400 I have laying around this weekend. Maybe some newds of the lady or something.
>>3033073
Sweet man, happy shooting!
>>3033078
Auction sites, Amazon, Craigslist, and brick and mortar stores. I consider film cheap if it's <$4/roll. $8/roll for expired film is way too much. A fresh 5pack of Portra is $6-$7/roll.

I can't help much besides trying to contact a geology department of a university there may just be an old fucker who used one and knows what's up, I work in an industry with lots of surveyors and I've heard of these cameras but never seen one. I don't think there is 70mm film being sold to consumers. How's the camera function could it take 120/220 film if you modified the spools? Sorry can't help at all. Interesting unit though.
>>3033088
It has a battery. I may have to ask around and see if my friends know anyone into electronics. Batteries get old, lose their ability to charge. This thing comes with an entire apparatus for power/charging the battery. If it doesn't work, an ad-hoc solution will need to be crafted if possible.

>Should I just increase the Epson files to approximately the same size?
No, that just makes the shatbed at an even worse disadvantage.
Show them both at native resolution, and then scale the drumscan down to meet the Epson.
In use, nobody is going to scale a shatbed scan up and look at it.
What programs are you using to edit your massive files?
I've always used GIMP, but it consistently shits the bed when working with my larger scans, to the point that I have to save a backup after each editing step if I don't want to go back and redo it after it crashes.

I remember seeing this photo in a thread about a guy who photographed industrial building around Japan and it was really enjoyable. Do you have anymore more of their photos?
>>3033129
The original mju is pretty dope and typically runs $50.
If you could do without a built in flash and don't mind some focusing the XA2 is nice. Sold my MJU II because I like the XA2 more (silent shutter, manual film advance, scale focus were all pluses to me). These typically go for <$40.

Hey guys, I've become quite intrigued by this point and shoot camera - the Fuji Natura as it has a 24mm f1.9 lens.

anyone here used a chinon cm-5? and concretely the chinon 50mm 1.9 lens?
>>3033261
You can get a good 35mm camera with a good lens for less money.. so not its not worth it .. but it is nice and if 600 didn't matter to you then it would be worth it and you wouldn't be asking.
>>3033266
There's no other comparable option though. If you want a 35mm with a wide, fast lens lens that fits in your pocket the Natura S is the only choice.
>>3033266
I have a few point and shoot 35mm cams in my collection. But the Natura S interests me a lot, it would take a large digital camera to get the same result the Natura gives in a small package.
At the end of the day, $600 isn't much and if I like it that much then I can sell my other point and shoots to make the money back, or if I don't like it, I could likely sell it for the same if not, not much less.
Would I get anywhere near the same amount of that "depth" look you get with medium format cameras out of 6x45 as opposed to 6x7 or 6x9?
Tossing up which format to go for.
Technically I'd prefer the extra shots of 6x45 and the smaller bodies, but if that medium format look you get is significantly better in 6x7/6x9 then I might go for that.
Keeping in mind I won't print larger than 30cm on the long side.
I intend to use it mainly for street architecture based photography, so a super shallow DOF isn't entirely necessary in that regard. I just want something that gives more depth that MF is known for.
Pic related was shot on a GS645S, similar to what I shoot and what I'm after.
I have color negative film here that expired 2-3 years ago and was stored at room temperature. Do you think it will still be usable?
>>3033285
Very usuable. Overexpose it like 2/3rds of a stop (which you should be doing with color neg film anyway). I doubt you'll even notice it's expired
>>3033283
fuck i know a shuttermaki shot when i see one
>>3033313
Just came across his stuff today, takes some great photos and is really selling the GS645S on me.
I wonder how many of his night shots are handheld as he uses Portra 800 + the leaf shutter on the fuji.
>>3033316
dang i thought you were the man yourself, i also shoot asian architecture with a 6x45, but with a bronica, not fuji.
i'd imagine for the night shots, he'd have to be using a tripod. he also uses a strong tungsten filter on a lot of his shots, which would act as an nd filter to a small capacity so he'd be overexposing at least a stop.
>>3033316
I think I remember him saying he uses a tripod.
I'm thinking of picking up a GA645 myself. Would be surprised if I haven't bought one by the month's end.
>>3033327
looked at that too but prefer an all manual camera
guess I'll need a better tripod then, though I rarely shoot at night
>>3033283
6x7 is a godly format. get that one instead. also the bigger the sensor, the more natural wide angles look.
Found a Pentax ME body on a local craigslist type site for 25 Euro.
I know nothing about the worth of camera bodies, is it worth it?
It looks like it was handled with lots of care and is completely clean. I have Pentax K lenses so I could also use it.
>>3033115
Alright, I'll just show a few different options for comparisons. It takes forever to work with these files. I'm getting 1.7gb scans out of 4x5 sheets and my computer needs several minutes to do various actions like saving or even cropping sometimes. Luckily layer adjustments are still quick and responsive.
I'm using photoshop, once the file gets over 2gb (which it does after a layer or two) then you have to save it as a large photoshop document. I'll be needing more hard drives soon...
>>3033283
>similar to what I shoot and what I'm after.
A Fuji GX680III would suit you well, if you don't mind carrying 4kgs / 8,5lb of camera. It's 6x8, giving the same aspect ratio as 645. Also:

Can you tighten down the bit at the very top with the two notches out? Or is whatever retains the bits missing? If you can just tighten it down then do that, glue will probably be fine provided you make 100% sure not a single drop falls into the actual mechanism.

films-festival is great. Bought loads of film from them over the years.
I'm trying to get into film but there is one thing I do not really understand.
What is the difference between slide and print? 135 specifically.
I bought lots of random film for about 50 bucks to test stuff out, how do I know which is slide and which is print? Does one of them cost more to get developed?
Hope someone can help me out because I'm too stupid to find a clear answer by looking it up on google.
>>3033482
Print film will turn into negatives when developed, slide film will turn into positives. Slide film is used far less than print film today, partly due to how comparatively difficult/expensive it is to develop.
It should say on the canister or box somewhere what process it is. If it's recent look for "E6" for slide film, and "C41" for print (for colour).

As long as you have a level and you use a light panel and a negative carrier you should be able to move everything and not have to worry about focus. I use a copy stand and make sure everything is level, then I have my negatives in a carrier (the carrier raises the negatives about an inch or two off the light panel) and I move the whole light panel to take the 2-4 pictures for 35mm or the 8 for 6x6. As long as everything is level and you don't bump anything focus shouldn't change even if you move the light panel/ negatives. Just my .02c

The best thing to use is nothing.
I'm the best scanner on here, and I just use two pieces of tape on a pane of window glass, and then a little flap of cardboard secured with more tape to hold down ne side of the film and enable to you align the film as you draw a new frame through.
It is written in the scriptures, brother.

>I beseech thee faithful to make thine own negative holder with two pieces of glass sandwiched together

Is the 45mm GS645W too wide for pictures of people? I'm going on a trip and I want the a 6x4.5 rangefinder for quick shots, and then maybe I'll bring my 35mm with a normal lens. Now I'm wondering if I should do the reverse, and bring wide lens for the 35mm and get a 75mm GS645. I'm looking for whichever is most versatile, because I'll be limited on space and 2 cameras is already a lot.
Also am wondering about how to bring film with me on the plane. I'm sure it has been asked a thousand times before, whether the X-ray machines expose film.
>>3033663
>whether the X-ray machines expose film.
Been wondering that as well, especially since I noticed this little symbol advising you to keep the roll away from ionizing radiation, on the Tmax box.
But I also seem to remember that we used to take pictures on family holidays when I was little, even when we flew there. But then again, that's 15-20 years ago, so I have no idea how reliable my memory is.
>>3033663
If you're wanting to shoot portraits check the minimum focusing distances. I have a feeling the 75mm can't focus too close.
>>3033678
Film is fine in carry-on. It gets fucked in checked bags. Pic rated Portra 160VC
>>3033663
The 45mm isn't a rangefinder, it's only scale focus on the lense.
The 75mm is a folder, so it's actually smaller and lighter to carry around than a 35mm slr.
However, the bellows ALL leak light. You will not be able to buy an unholed one on eboi.
This is an immutable fact of the universe, do not test me.
If you buy one, be prepared to replace the bellows with paper ones, and then tape over them.
>>3033680
>I have a feeling the 75mm can't focus too close.
This close.
>>3033625
5 or so rolls a month, developed at home and bulk rolled so it doesn't cost much at all. Some days I shoot 2 or 3 rolls, some times it takes me a few weeks to finish just 1 roll.
I've found I really enjoy 24 exposure rolls since I can shoot them faster and develop them sooner
>>3033688
Sorry, I'm one of those retards who says "rangefinder" when I mean "compact, plastic non-interchangeable lens camera".
>light leaks
I saw one on the LF forum and it was mint for 375$. Still had the protective plastic on the bottom. Ugh.
What I'm trying to ask is if the 45mm 645 series fuji camera will be too wide to take pictures of people without distortion. I'm used to using a Hasselblad with 80mm, and like with any other normal lens, it seems to handle both portraits and landscapes okay.
Obviously the ideal would be to have one for each, but then I'd be packing an interchangeable lens camera with extra bulk. I'm not bringing the RZ67 backpacking because of weight/bulk, and the Hasselblad 500C is too expensive to replace.
It would feel ridiculous to purchase two GS645's of different focal lengths, and bring both. Not to mention that would end up being quite expensive, and something which I am too cheap to do.
>>3033419
>are you using it to dslr scan.
Yeah that was the plan, but I might have to rig my own device now unless I can get lucky and find another sweet deal
>>3033694
To rephrase with less words: I'm just looking for a compact MF camera with a non-square shot size (6x7, 6x4.5, etc.) that will allow me to get okay pictures of buildings, people; generic city scenery and mountain landscapes alike. Ideally under 500$.
>>3033694
>It would feel ridiculous to purchase two GS645's of different focal lengths, and bring both
This is the only solution that makes sense.
Consistency of format, same handling, same film type.
I took a GW and GSW 690 on my last overseas holday.
>>3033698
Just take a 35mm camera and be done with it.
>>3033699
Doesn't that defeat the point of these cameras?
>>3033701
Yeah, that's kind of where I'm leaning after this discussion.
I don't have the same stockpile in 35mm film, though. I've got mountains of 120, expired and fresh. Part of my rationale for taking an MF compact was that it would share film with the DaYi 617 I'd be taking. I was hoping to compensate for its bulk by only taking one other tiny camera.
My 35mm equipment ain't great, either. Just a Nikon FE with some meh-tier 80's nikon lenses.
>>3033702
The good part of 35mm is that everything about it is pretty cheap. You could pick up some nice primes for your Nikon pretty cheaply
>>3033706
Any reccomendations? I went on hiatus photography wise for almost 3 years because depression (thanks, depression). I have no idea what makes a good prime.
>>3033702
Buy the gs645 wide and supplement it with a fixed lens 35mm point and shit.
You're already taking a 617 too though? Too many cameras breh.
>>3033712
> too many cameras.
I know man, I know. It's my first trip on my own in my adult life, and I'm planning on using my Spanish to get me out into the more Quechua parts of the Peruvian sierra. Want to take pictures of the mountains and valleys in panorama, since it's not like I can just go anytime. Got the 617 quite recently and think it's a great way to break the thing in.
Maybe I'll break down and just get a micro 4/3rds.
>>3033713
Speaking from long-term travel experience, the more cameras/lenses/gear the more frustrating traveling becomes. Always feeling like you brought the wrong lens/camera, always changing lenses because you never seen to have the right one attached, plus carrying all that shit sucks.
If I were you, I'd leave the 617 at home. That way you can leave the tripod at home too. Buy the 645w and take a 35mm fixed lens point and shoot. Assuming you have a decent smartphone, that can be your digital/backup.
>>3033519
Is that straight out of the scanner? you should adjust the histogram in the scanner software and add contrast with whatever software you have.
>>3033580
It's called reticulation, It's caused when you wash the film with cold water, I actually like the effect for that pic but its probably not fun when it does it to your whole roll!

Hey there guys I'm kinda new to the whole shooting film thing and I wanted to ask a few questions.
1.) what's the cheapest scanner I could get that wouldn't mess with the photos? (I shoot polaroid land camera see pic related)
2.) what are the advantages 35mm has over polaroid?
3.) aside from 35mm film what other kinds are there, more specifically are there any other kinds of instant film cameras aside from Fuji and polaroid?
sorry for the shitty pictures quality and thanks for reading desu

thoughts on the KOWA Six?
>>3033763
1. Use the Google PhotoScan app for your smartphone to scan instant photos. Does a really good job since it combines 4 or 5 photos into a high quality scan.
2. 35mm is a very different format to Instant photos. It's like saying "what are the advantages of a burger compared to an apple?" You could probably compare the two, but they were made for different purposes. Off the top of my head, 35mm has a higher dynamic range, cheaper, more variety and is accepted by a lot of cameras.
3. Other formats of film include: Minox micro film, 110 format, APS format, Disc film, 120 format (6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 6x9 and 6x17 cameras all use 120 or 220 format film) and then there's sheet film which comes in 2x3, 4x5, 8x10, 11x16 and 16x20 sizes.
In terms of instant film, there used to be a lot of variety but now there's hardly none. FP3000b and FP100c is pretty much all you can get for your type of camera.
There's also Instax film but that's for a different (and much worse) format of camera entirely
>>3033795

So, I got myself a cheap film digitizer from Lidl for €30. Right now, I only have access to my laptop with Linux and there is no Linux software for this scanner. But I will post some scans tonight when I'm on PC again.
I hope that thing doesn't turn out to be total crap. Anyone have any experience with this thing?
https://www.lidl.de/de/silvercrest-negativ-digitalisierer-snd-3600-c2/p240746
>>3033876
These are really quite bad. But you only paid 30 euros for it so lesson learned I guess.
It's more like a little digital camera in a box than a scanner, but the results might be enough for your needs. Scan to raw format with Vuescan and use Photoshop to post-process / invert them. That'd be your best bet, the included software *will* be garbage
>>3033715
>leave the 617 at home
I was so keen on the 617, It's not /that/ huge in terms of bulk. It's manageable. Not very heavy either. I bought it from a guy who took it climbing, and I figured it would be ideal for the Andes. Best opportunity to produce photos of at least marginal value.
if I'm just learning the basics of composition and exposure, does it REALLY matter what kind of film I choose?
I read that it's best to be consistent and shoot one kind of film for a while to learn how to use it, rather than fuck around with too many different kinds.
to that end I was thinking of buying 10 rolls of each B/W and colour neg.
for B/W I plan to get Fuji Acros 100, but I can't decide which colour neg to buy.
should I splurge on Fuji Pro 400h or just get Superia X-tra 400?
>>3033942
it really matters if you want to create a coherent body of work, with a distinctive look and feel.
you should buy one roll of each and try it. to see how it reacts to highlights and shadows, to scan, to post processing, how does it look printed. do the whole process. then buy a lot of the one that you liked the most.
now, between 400h and superia xtra theres quite a leap. 400h no contest.
>>3033946
okay thanks, that's a different approach altogether. I do love trying different films
I keep reading here about how good 400h is so I just gotta try it

If you're looking for a plastic-fantastic reliable Cosina clone capable of mounting nikkor glasses, maybe
if you're looking just for a Cosina clone, grab another one, preferably K-mount
>>3034015
The FM10 is a Cosina piece of shit made to trick people who signed up to take a photo 101 class and don't know any better. Literally any real Nikon film SLR would be a million times better and also cheaper.
>>3034029
not any SLR, I would take a FM-10 over an EM or any early AF camera from the F401 to the F90x
>>3034030
Just get a pentax k1000, amazing camera, it's cheap because it is an awesome camera that sold millions, they made them for decades.
>>3034030
go for that. i have a cosina clone that have lasted me about 15 years, but if i would go right now for an used, cheap slr i'll go Minolta.
>>3034030
Just pick literally any Nikon SLR that is actually manufactured by Nikon. The FM10 is made by another company. If you want manual focus then look at the FE, FE2, FA, FM, FM2, FM2n, FG, F3.
Pentax and Olympus and Minolta would probably be good options too. They should be cheaper than Nikon but still common so it'll be easy to find lenses and stuff. Canon SLRs tend to sell for more than they should just because people recognize the brand name, but Canons from before the autofocus era aren't really that great.

I'm never loading anything slower than 400 in fall again.
anyone know much about lens adapters with rangefinders? I bought an m39 to M mount adapter for a 35mm lens. It continues focusing so far past infinity that basically half of the rangefinder patch goes back out of alignment. This seemed normal to me from forum posts online, but they mostly said that this happened with cheap Chinese adapters.
I went back to the store and told them it would be annoying as shit to try and shoot this lens with only like 3/4 of its focus scale available -- and the guy behind the counter started talking about moisture in the air acting like another lens element and how normal it is to have lenses focus "significantly past infinity" and saying that the adapter was fine.
I still have the adapter since they couldn't accept the return for some reason. Is this the best it'll get? Or should these adapters be able to line up with the new rangefinder?
>>3034104
What lens is it? I know some of the Soviet era M39 lenses have dodgy rangefinder coupling due to the spotty QC
>>3033066
Beginner here, why would you underexpose it so much?
>>3034112
What he's doing is called pushing the film, you expose at a different iso than the film is rated, in this case 800, then you modify your dev time changing the effective speed of the film
>>3034111
It's a Voigtlander Color Skopar f2.5. The lens itself is fine, it focuses perfectly on the Bessa I bought it for. Some people said lenses wider than 50mm just have this issue when adapted so maybe it'll be okay with my Jupiter 8 once I find that adapter but I don't know for sure.
Just a little frustrated cause I found a very good deal on a film M body and I'm still too broke for M glass
>>3034116
Yeah thats a shit one. Maybe try get a another cheap one from China off eBay? I've used them before and they seemed to work fine on Bessa bodies
I'm actually in a similar situation. Got a good deal on an early Leica M3 but the only M mount lens I have is the Elmar 50mm 2.8, which isn't exactly held in high regard

>>3034115
>then you modify your dev time changing the effective speed of the film
No. No, you don't. You overdevelop an underexposed negative to make the negative image "thicker" to be able to salvage/print an underexposed shot. There will be no shadow detail. Your film's native iso doesn't magically change. You only make the underexposed latent image grow more in the developer, increase the developed grain size so the thin shitty image looks darker.
Nowadays you could just develop it normally and boost the contrast digially, in post, for the same effect. Buncha fucking parrot retards repeating the same misunderstood misquoted mangled piece of ancient outdated information over and over, like a particularily awkard STD.
Sure, "pushing" film gets you contrasty, grainy gritty images, it's a technique yielding a subjective aesthetic that has its uses, but for fuck's sake, YOU DON'T MAGIC OUT EXTRA FILM SPEED BY STEWING IT IN DEVELOPER LONGER. Cut this bullshit already. Some of us like shadow detail. You can always bin it in post anyway, dodge an' burn an' shit. Yeeesh.

Haha this again. I'm underexposing the film two stops because it allows for me to shoot most day light situations without the camera wanting flash. This causes there to be a less apparent image on the films emulsion so as kurwa says you essentially over develop the underexposed film to give you a working negative. This gives your film more contrast (darkest darks have no detail because nothing was imprinted on the emulsion cause we underexposed the film) also some other stuff can happen when films pushed depending on the emulsion. kurwa is right though the speed of the film stays the same.

Confirmed for never having shot the EM.
They are truly excellent cameras and a joy to use. I have and use 2 of them. Pic related.
Their metering system is the same as that found in FE's and FM3A's, that the based god Kenneth devotes whole passages of scripture to.
He spake thus:
>The EM makes perfectly timed, automatically exposed time-exposures out to at least a few minutes.
>With the F100 you need to use an external meter or calculate in your head to determine the correct time to expose the hard way.
>I've tried this, and the EM is far better than my F100 for night photography.
>You can set the EM to a nice aperture like f/8, set the self timer, and walk away while the EM does a great job.
>The EM also has a virtual mirror lock-up (like a professional camera), unlike the F100 which does not.
>The EM also has a metal back and metal rewind fork, unlike the amateur plastic rewind fork fiasco of the F100.

Yeah IG and Facebook. Not going to lie, about half of the prints I sold each time were to friends. The rest were fine through Instagram and a forum I used to post on. I've only done this 3-4 times. Not the best person to ask really. There are other posters on here that actually make a good chunk of their income selling prints. hopefully they chime in.
>>3034260
IG? How many followers do you have? Or do you advertise?
>>3034295
~400 followers, no advertising.

Ah, sorry. Yeah I'd advertise I was making prints. I've had maybe a dozen or so random messages asking for prints over the past 3-4 years.

where online do you buy dev chems from?
>>3034628
I just buy my shit from the B&H grabblers
Buying in aus gets you expensive prices + free/cheap postage, buying from overseas gets you cheap prices but sometimes expensive shipping. Usually all up it's cheaper buying from B&H, but at times the price difference is so negligible you might as well buy from a store in aus
>>3034466
Y'see, that's the thing. I have been putting up my most cliche, saturated stuff. I'm thinking my biggest problem is my hashtag game. When I put up something I figure they'll like, I can get maybe 40 likes. Clearly it's passable but the hashtag game is not getting me that exposure.

>>3034701
>>3034712
I buy Ilford because their film and chemicals are good quality and because I'm from the UK where they're based so it feels like supporting the home team. Realistically almost all films are perfectly fine but people tend to have pet favourites based on things like cost, grain structure, effective film speed, tonal range/balance, how flat it dries, etc. because they're things that vary by brand and emulsion.
>>3034719
>Ever done one of the Pen F half frame SLRs? I'd love to get one but I hear they're quite unreliable.
nope. once held a pen f, i was infatuated with the idea of getting one, but i found it wasnt as small as i thought it was.
i think we all should have a basic understanding of how to disassemble film cameras and service them. becuase in the future we might have cameras, film and ways to develop, but all the old guys that used to service cameras and be good at it are going to be dead at that point, its already happening.
>>3034720
From what I've seen they look to be about the same size as the Canonet QL rangefinders. Was the weight much different? Agree completely with your thoughts on servicing, I've done a bit of work on a Yashica Electro and I think if the documentation was out there most fairly mechanically minded people could do it. Electronics are a whole other ball game though.
>>3034740
it had adequate weight. well balanced. viewfinder was super cute, i mean you were actually watching what you were going to get, a mindblowing situation for half frames.

Yep. Over the past 6 months I've been shooting a fuckton of 35mm p&s and loving the change of pace but missing the bigger negs my Bronica gives. A year ago I scoffed at the ga645, but now it would make the perfect travel camera for me.
just found a place that does 120 development for $3. 220 is $3 too. pushing doesnt alter the price, its sooo good.
made friends with the lab guy and he gave me the exact days when i can go and have the chemicals recently changed and fresh as fuck so i get the cleanest negs. i was looking for this since forever ;_;
>>3035077
fuck u m8
>>3035061
I looked up some size comparisons, damn that's pretty small. As someone who has lugged a Bronica SQ brick on a few hikes, I wish you luck. Personally I just like looking directly through the lens too much to give up SLRs, but they are a real pain in the ass. How much do those things go for anyway?
>>3034754
Easy there m8. I'm a photographer. Not a graphic designer.
Hi /fgt. I got a problem.
This is an Asahi-Pentax Super Takumar 1:1.4/50 Lens. It contains radioactive thorium glass. The radiation isn't an issue. I had one of my friends with a degree in nuclear science assure me that the camera is able to shield most of the radiation. The problem is that the lens has yellowed over time. I read online that it could be put in the sun for a while to remove the color. But, I live in Chicago. The sun does not come out this time of year. Not to mention, it would likely end up jacked. Does anyone have an effective indoor solution? Thanks.
>>3035087
Yeah I've lugged the Bronica on countless hikes. I freaking love using the WLF, but the camera is too big/heavy to fit with my upcoming plans (~6 months of travel).
Looks like I should be able to get one in nice condition for ~$350USD.
>>3035092
which bronica would you recommend?
i like the bronica EC, is it any good?
>>3035091
shoot it with the yellow that would be cool as
>>3035097
SQ-A is newer and much easier to find stuff for. That's my recommendation. Try to find one with a WLF because they cost $100+ alone for some reason.
>>3035091
UV or LED lamp is your indoor option, the UV will obviously work better.
>>3035092
>too big, heavy
How big and heavy is it?
>>3035137
About 1.5kg. It's not too bad, I never hesitated to take it on 12+ mile hiking trips. But for living out of a backpack for 6 months, I'm looking for something a bit smaller and lighter. Plus, getting more shots per roll is nice.
Finally got to bring my 4x5 somewhere interesting. Took some bike co-op shots. Will post after I dev them tomorrow.
>>3035091
Although you'd be hard pressed to find anything on the exact science behind it, whatever the yellow buildup is reverts back to being clear when you blast it with ultraviolet light. The shorter the UV wavelength (biolab sterilizing quartz lamps) the faster/better it works. UV also degrades plastic and rubber, so you know. People put their takumars under UV lamps/LEDS and blast them for days non-stop till they clear up. UV bulbs can be bought online lole normal lightbulbs. Google "yellowed takumar UV" to see how different people approached the task, and remember to expose the lens from the side the yellowed element is closer to (other elements in the lens will all absorb/block a part of the UV making the process slower)

I went out today with some box speed FP4 and it was just getting darker and darker so when the roll was done I switched to Pan 400 and thought I might try pushing it two stops. About 8 shots in the sun came out again brighter than it'd been all day. Film problems in places with unreliable weather lads. Been so long since I've bothered with a lower speed film.
Anyone else bother making faux-contact sheets? There's no practical reason to do it but I likes it.

Where to cop linhof lens boards?
I have a lens I'm considering buying for my Technika, but I'd need to get a board for it.
Measured the diameter of the lens rear to be around 32mm, so I guess a size 0 board would do me. Ideally it should be recessed too, but it's not a must.
I've looked a bit on ebay, most of the China ones come without the ring on the back of the board, idk if this is a big deal or not?

>>3035406
Here you go daddy. It was a honeydew melon someone had drawn a lady's face on with a pen and then skewered on the fence. Pretty inexplicable but unfortunately I couldn't get over to the other side to photograph the face. Shame really, how often do you see some weird shit like that?
And even more haram the outdoor ones aren't even exposure bracketed shots, it was focus bracketing. I remember it being really windy that day and my eyes were watering so badly I couldn't tell what was properly in focus :^)
The FP4 was expired when it was given to me but I don't think it was off by much. It was 2015 so I'll have been using Ilfosol 3. Looking back through my notes it was my forth roll of proper black and white film that I dev'd myself. Seems like ages ago.

Where can I find a Pakon for a decent price? Are they worth it?
I have a Minolta SRT303 film camera. i managed to take a bunch of photos with it over the course of about a year, but now the winder seems to be broken.
The leaver wont advance. if i put a bit of pressure onto the winder and push the shutter it seems to release the winder and winder for a moment and can take about 1 photo every 3 winds or so... which is obviously not very efficient. Does anyone no if it is possible to fix this DIY, or of any tutorials? would be great to use it again
>>3035457
Pakonfag here. Yes, they're worth it because nothing really compares for speed/quality, It's worth it's weight in gold if you shoot 56x24 or 65x24 or half frame. If you're looking for the be all end all in IQ tho, a DSLR/Macro setup will do the job better but slower while probably taking up more space.
To make things incredibly easy though, I'd recommend that you buy a windows XP desktop/refurb unit for £30 or cheaper. While it is possible to use virtual desktops, a lot of times you'll run into issues with the setup/install. You may also find that virtualization tends to disconnect or throw errors your way due to memory issues. If you're spending an obscene amount of money on a quick lab scanner, may as well throw a bit more in for a desktop and dust cover. Also join the facebook group and lurk the help files.

Super Takumars emit some Gamma radiation, which will not be shielded by the camera body. However the Gamma decay in the Thorium is very low so as to be almost negligible.

A good hardy Nikon. Like an F3/FM3a/FM2, I keep going on about this but Nikon is made to be used, not this faggotry where people collect cameras and place them in glass boxes and take electron microscopy pics of every blemish.
These cameras are made to last, and combined with good glass, you're basically set, your children are set, their children too. Provided you're not some sadist that abuses gear, it should last for basically ever.
I have a Nikon FE and it's my first film Nikon, this thing looks like it survive a bomb blast. The FM2 is entirely mechanical and it would be my choice when it comes to a decent camera.
What's some really good film to use with a Nikon F for daytime shots? I've been eyeing some Ilford to give black & white a chance, and maybe even some Kodak Portra but I don't know for sure how many portraits I'd be shooting.

If you overexpose during daytime the grain is practically non-existant. Here's one I shot at 100 I think

Here's one at night, exposed at either 800 or 1600, can't quite remember. It's best at night with really vivid neon lights, but it works ok in daylight too

did you have to pull this to 100 when developed or did you shoot the whole roll at different speeds?
>>3035910
Shot the whole roll at varying speeds, 100-2000ish. Then developed it as normal. I was a little worried since shooting at 100 is 4 stops overexposed, but it came out wonderfully. There's a ridiculous amount of shadow detail in the daytime shots, I'll post another one if I can find it.

thanks man I've got a roll of natura in my pentacks right now. I shot the first ~20 at night (on box speed) but I'll try the rest in daylight in the morning
the meter was way over for some of my night stuff but I didn't want to risk underexposing, do you think I should be worried? seems to be pretty forgiving in your case. I really like your pictures by the way, shoot some more!
Fixed up this little bugger recently. Wasn't working at all when I bought it from a 2nd hand shop for $2. Gave it a quick rebuild and cleaned the lens and it worked. Fixed shutter speed of either 1/60th or 1/200th, can't find a manual online. Aperture is selected from Flash symbol (f2.8) to bright sunny symbol (f11 or f16 I assume). Focus is by a very innacurate scale, I just kept it at f16 and infinity focus the entire time.
First roll was T-Max 400 that expired in 2003, I'll post a few examples below. Relatively surprised that I even got negatives, was very happy when I pulled the film out of the tank and saw it wasn't blank.

This is natura 1600? Why is there no grain?
>>3035915
Seems to be a lightleak coming through the camera somewhere, I'll replace the lightseals again before doing another roll
>>3035916
overexposing (in my experience) tends to hide the grain, whereas underexposing makes the grain more apparent. Also I usually hit my scans with a little bit of noise reduction since my scanner isn't the best

scans are dusty because I did a rush job of developing and scanning them. There's nothing of quality on the roll anyway since I was rushing it

I wouldn't worry about overexposure. I shot the majority of my night stuff on Natura at 800 and they came out very pleasingly. Better to give the film too much information than not enough, underexposure is the worst enemy of negative film
>>3033261
Depends on if you are going to use it with 1600 film , if not then no it's not worth it
>>3035457
That is quite the fancy ashtray you have there, anon.
>>3035936
Looks like a bedpan to me
Just bought 5 rolls of Fuji Velvia 100f by accident (got a good price tho so it's chill).
How do I shoot this stuff? Never shot a roll of slide in my life. I've heard I need to be bang on with the exposure, maybe even underexpose a little
>>3035944
Shit's great. Meter it at 100. If your camera has a decent meter just let it do it's thang. My little XA2 meters and exposes that stuff like a champ.
Shoot in nice light and avoid harsh, mid-day light.

All my cameras are meterless (cause they're all broken). I usually use a phone meter app combined with common sense. Should I be metering for the highlights instead of the shadows? Or finding some mid-brightness in the scene
>>3035823
Absolutely nothing.
>>3034174
how're you push-deving the film? i pushed a few rolls on monday using an autolab but i was thinking it would be nice to push c41 using stand development, since it's more convenient at home & i won't have access to the autolab for much longer.
>>3035984
I just tank dev at home. Normal dev time is 3:30 @ 102F, I develop at 5:25 @ 102F when pushing two stops. I got the times off the Unicolour dev kit instructions, seems like a decent time, I'm gonna okay with it a bit but the test roll I did of 200 gold @ 800 turned out nice.

You think everybody who's ever walked down George St with a camera hasn't taken that exact same photo in that archway?
