What is there to do when you live in a country that's dark, incredibly snowy and has slippery ice everywhere for more than half the year? Looking for suggestions since winter is going to start in ~3 months and I can't go in the woods and cycle on the built bike track anymore.

I run a trapline. I sit inside and drink during the summer, avoiding bugs and heat. I start scouting once the heat breaks in September, prepare my gear in early October, deer hunt at the end of the month, grouse hunt until mid november, then trap till Feb or so. Far more time spent outside in the fall/ winter than any other time

Trailrunners are enough 80% of the time imo. Of course you should have decent boots as well. I recommend Lundhags. I love mine (Lundhags Synchro mid's).

First time posting on this thread. Recently I've taken a trip to Arkansas for the second time and I finally thought about discussing it on /out/.

What I'm mainly wondering is, primarily: As someone who's interested in mountains, what trails should I check out? (I have a rather light book that goes over around 43 trails, I believe)
What do you guys typically wear when hiking? What's a good map for Ozark trails?
Are milsurp boots recommended for hikes over rocky terrain or should I invest in something lower-profile? (ankle-high hiking boots, but I collect milsurp, so if it's an overall better choice, I don't mind spending money on hiking boots instead)
Is Mount Nebo worth going up just for the view? (Went up there while it was raining, couldn't see past the drop off, a shame too since it was 700+ ft higher than the best viewpoint on Mount Petit Jean, considering going back to Nemo)
I've read that the Seven Hollows Trail at Petit Jean is very beautiful. Does this claim speak truth?

Other than those questions, feel free to discuss the Ozarks and their trails.

I'll upload the pics I have with my responses for anyone who's interested in the sights.

Where do I have to go to get authentic /out/ experience? I visited arches in Utah yesterday and it was gorgeous but very difficult to appreciate when you're pushing through crowds of people to get where you want to go. Toddlers everywhere, morons with no water, 90% of the people there had no business being there.

Where can I go to get away from people /out/?

Try Great Basin NP. Not a lot of people, great hiking and camping plus Wheeler Peak 13k.
>>

Almost all national parks become significantly more enjoyable once you hike more than a mile away from one of the parking lots. We basically had the grand canyon to ourselves after descending the first 1000 feet, only ran into about 4 people total in our down and up again hike. Yellowstone is a shithole too until you get away from the major tourist attractions.

You gotta remember that the average person is a disgusting fatass and being even the tiniest bit /fit/ allows you to do and see things the average asshole can only dream of. Just put a little sweat in and you'll have most places to yourself.

This happened near me. Living in the land of cotton wool and bubble wrap, people seem to ignoring clear warning signs and don't take even a basic level of responsibility for their own safety when outdoors.

At this particular waterfall there is a formed walking track with hand rails, with flowing water and moss and algae everywhere.

If you had time to prepare for being stranded with little food would you try and
gain as much weight as possible beforehand
or
fast to acclimatise your body to the effects of starvation?

>>

Take it from a life long underweight guy; just because you're used to burning more calories than you're consuming, it doesn't mean you won't still feel the ill-effects of that. You'll still get dizzy, feel tired etc, but you start thinking of that as normalcy.
Thing is most underweight people still eat enough to not die.
>>
The body is inefficient at storing energy. The conversion rate is about 14%.
You'd need to eat 25,000 excess calories to put on 1lb of fat.
>>
>>1076904
>You'd need to eat 25,000 excess calories to put on 1lb of fa
not true.

Whats too far away? I would say do Flat Iron trail if it wasn't so damn hot out right now.
You will have to travel north atleast an hour to before it gets cool enough for any decent hike. In which case I would recommend Fossil Springs but you need a reservation but you can get one easily. There is alot to do up North. Sucks you came in the summer.
