First time posting on this thread. Recently I've taken a trip to Arkansas for the second time and I finally thought about discussing it on /out/.

What I'm mainly wondering is, primarily: As someone who's interested in mountains, what trails should I check out? (I have a rather light book that goes over around 43 trails, I believe)
What do you guys typically wear when hiking? What's a good map for Ozark trails?
Are milsurp boots recommended for hikes over rocky terrain or should I invest in something lower-profile? (ankle-high hiking boots, but I collect milsurp, so if it's an overall better choice, I don't mind spending money on hiking boots instead)
Is Mount Nebo worth going up just for the view? (Went up there while it was raining, couldn't see past the drop off, a shame too since it was 700+ ft higher than the best viewpoint on Mount Petit Jean, considering going back to Nemo)
I've read that the Seven Hollows Trail at Petit Jean is very beautiful. Does this claim speak truth?

Other than those questions, feel free to discuss the Ozarks and their trails.

I'll upload the pics I have with my responses for anyone who's interested in the sights.

Another shot of the same cave, the iron deposits drew beautiful lines across the bluffs.
The pictures do literally no justice.

Can't recall this exact vista, but it was raining when I stopped here, this was definitely the most amazing view I got aside from Cedar Falls.

The Ozarks in Arkansas and missouri are beautiful. Great trails alot of old mines and lakes. I live just north of where the Ozarks start in missouri at lake of the Ozarks. Missouri dnr and Arkansas dnr both have a wealth of info on there sites about trails. Tons of caves and vistas, bluffs you name it. It's a very underrated geographic and out destination. If you get a chance check out elephant rock state park.

Any trails you really recommend?
Or is it a case of "Choose any and enjoy."?

Pic is an above view of Cedar Falls, definitely go if you haven't.
Best part of it was actually going down into CF, it's a simple 2 mile out-and-back, ends at the great Cedar Falls.

Basically it's a big pond with overhanging bluffs that looked incredible. I remember the way I hiked took me up on a small overlook of the entire pond, I noticed that where I was sitting was dry so I looked upward and saw the parting between rain and rocks/iron deposits.
Go to Cedar Falls if you haven't, it's so good.

Devils canyon is really good. I also like kings bluff. Both are in Arkansas. But honesty just go to one of the national forest or state parks and explore. That's how we do it. Never know what you will find. Watch for timber rattle snakes this time of year.

Also if you canoe or kayak float the current river in missouri and it ends at the white river in Arkansas. Almost the whole length of the river is the Ozarks national scenic riverway and it's beatuiful. Caves springs bluffs trails old towns to explore. It's one of the best out experience in both missouri and Arkansas. Also alot of hiking trails along it. I would recommend do it.

Nice OP, I'm from this area and its great to see someone here enjoying it. Nebo I'd say is worth it, as is Mt. Magazine close by. There's a nice 20 mile hike down the mountain that I enjoy. I camp out next to a steam midway through.

Hawkbill Crag is a great short hike with a great view. Buffalo River is gorgeous. Devil's Den is great as well.

Thanks for the info.
Already looking into making another trek into Missouri, might have to wait a little while due to funds. (t. someone from Texas)

I don't whitewater raft or kayak, but I don't doubt the beauty of the riverways.

What sort of footwear do you wear?

I'll canoe a bit, but I'm kinda the same way. Alot of places just have you hiking past the water ways though which is nice.

So far, all I've ever worn on my hikes have been chacos, I'll also bring some wool socks if it may get cold. Haven't had any issues, except did roll my ankle once, but I don't think it was due to the shoes.

I got a Big Rock Burger the first time and then a regular cheeseburger the second, finished both off with ice cream. (Both times I went straight to the hotel afterwards for a nap.)
The food was so good desu.

I didn't stay at the lodge, my family has, back during the 90s I believe. I stayed at a hotel maybe 15 minutes from the lodge. Either way, I'm looking to go back and stay in one of the cabins at the lodge.
Also, these boots are great for hiking I've discovered: https://kommandostore.com/austrian-bundesheer-paratrooper-boots-grade-one/

I live in NWA, and good GRIEF is it ever beautiful here!
For trail recommendations, anything in the Ozark Nat'l Forest is great. I know, that's a wide range, but there's so many different trails that are great!
For short hikes, I'd say Hawksbill Crag or Roundtop Mountain, shown in pic.
Longer hikes include White Rock, the Buffalo River Trail, and the ever-gorgeous OHT. I've plugged that sucker here for a while now. Plans are in the works so that I may do it.
I, too, am looking for other trail recommendations. Anyone hike in Missouri? Looking into the Ozark Trail as well

What do you like about those boots? Run into any problems with 'em?

Also I forgot to say this in my list but if you don't mind going a little further south, the Ouachitas are also great

Only problem I've run into (might be a size problem) is that if I don't tighten it enough, it'll slide just a little and rubs the back of my ankle. Either way, I still wear it often and am starting to develop a callus on the spot wear it rubs, so it's not really a bother at this point. Otherwise, literally 0 problems, love the look, as advertised they're great if you need to maneuver rocky terrain (I flew over some of those bluffs).

I'm actually looking more Southward in the immediate future, but over time I'm hoping to expand North/Westward.

>>1078494
Read good stuff about Roundtop Mountain, I'll look into it.
For some shorter, but really beautiful trails, I recommend any trail at Mount Petit Jean. As I said before, check out Cedar Falls. You'll know exactly what I mean when I say the pictures do 0 justice.

I'll read up about the trails you suggested, staring with Rountop. Thanks for the suggestions.

This is where I mention the Glory Hole. Everyone should visit it near Ozone and slide right through.
