Don't take the word of anyone that responds. If you aren't 1000% sure you know what something is and that it's safe to eat, it is to be considered toxic. Day one stuff, bro.

Wood gas or rocket stove?

Well, it would help if we knew what you planned on using it for, dipshit.

Alcohol burner or gas burner?
>>
>>1073978
Gas is safest, but can be difficult to get in some places. Alcohol/multifuel stoves are more prepper proof and will work in more ghetto conditions and in more places and you can run a multifuel with kerosene and gasoline and so on.

You can control the gas flame intensity but not alcohol/multifuel so if you plan to cook other than water, like simmer porridge at 25% intensity, or make that innawoods beef Wellington which would make Gordon proud, then gas is the way.

There is no universal answer. It depends on what you want and how you plan to use it, and where.

Of course, keep in mind the dual-use of ethanol as a recreation substance and sterilization/wound cleaning agent.

>$3.26 a day for a balanced diet
>$10 a month for a small butane stove
>$20,000 for some acres in the woods

Assuming I live 40 more years, Thats $47,596 for food, $4,800 in fuel and $20,000 for land + $50/year in tax

All together thats $74,396 for 40 years of sitting on my own land cooking food and looking at trees

Now assume I got good at hunting or trapping, I could replace half my diet with food I catch. That would bring me down to $53,396

That brings my total cost per day including land to ~$3.65

Dude, just camp in some mountainous region, nobody gives a shit.
Saved you 20k right there.
>>
There's an enormous amount you aren't taking into account here.

Water. No idea how much this will cost. But to be safe, you want to assume that even if you have a source of water that runs with the land, it may become unsafe, so you may need a water truck to come out. Oh, and you'll probably have to get any water source tested every once in a while even if it does stay drinkable, so that'll cost some.

You're probably going to want a shelter so add more cost. And it will need maintenance. Add more cost.

Oh, and transportation. There's some things that you'll need from town, so you'll need some type of vehicle. Add gas, insurance, maintenance, etc. Yes, a pedal bike may do it unless you've got some heavy hauling or are injured.

But, that's all peanuts, in the grand scheme of things. Let's get on to the truly pricey items

Speaking of being injured, let's add in some cash for medical insurance in there. That can easily be thousands a year, even in countries with good systems in place. And it's pretty much guaranteed that this will go up as you get older, even if you don't develop any bad problems.

Also, over time, there will be inflation, so add about 3-4% of the cost to your entire budget each year, maybe even more. Your costs could triple or quadruple in that 40 year timeframe.

I'm not saying it's impossible, and I like the plan at it's face but you've gotta be real about things. I'd get on the ERE website and see how people do van/truck/tent living on the cheap. There's some more realistic numbers on there.

Also, just saving up the cash isn't going to do it. You have to get that cash working, which means becoming savvy with investing.

An alternative plan that has actually worked for a great many folks is this: Work the best paying job you can find, cut your expenses, buy the smallest home you need and pay it off, dump everything into an index fund, and you're done.

HTH

In countries with good medical systems, medical insurance is normally zero

Best bang for buck/budget cold weather sleeping bags?

Have a handful of down really cold weathet bags that were in the 300-500 range. I've always understood the 3 things you never skimp on are pack, tent and bag.

That being said I have a coworker who wants to get out with me in the late fall and winter and is buying kit to get into backpacking.

He's asked about brands like hyke and byke with regards to their 175ish dollar down bags, rated to 0 according to them.

I remain suspicious. Go ahead with feedback on them or other budget brands. Make suggestions for a winter bag for a dude who might get out 3 or 4 times tops.

A Kelty Cosmic 0 series bag might be the closest thing within your price range thats going to reliable enough.
>>
>>1077951
Surplus USGI modular sleep system. With both bags and the bivvy cover they're comfy to around -10*F and you'll get by down to around -25*F. Can be had as a complete system in okay shape for around $80 in good condition or around $60 in "fair" condition.

Great system, but bulky/heavy for backpacking.

How are you all doing /out/

Me and a friend are considering to make a clothing brand specifically for hikers, campers, and that sort of stuff.

We've been looking through a bunch of different fabrics and contacted a few local tailors.

I just want to know what you guy's want/need.

Its going to be hard to compete with major brands anon. Going head to head with major brands in terms of functionality wont do you any good. Try going the aesthetic route instead. Emulate traditional mountain clothing with modern technology.
>>
>>1075386
Me and my pal were thinking about taking some of the design of more modern clothing and reduce the price a bit (by getting rid of some unnecessary features usually) but still keeping the quality up.

Im taking my 5 year old and wife to a state campground tonight.

I've only ever gone solo camping, im cool with just sitting there doing nothing. I don't know how to keep a womern or a kiddo entertained in the woods. Hes bringing toys and paint for coloring. What are some other things to keep them from going stir crazy and wanting to go home?

/out/ consensus on hunting, it is cool as long as you follow two rules:
1. you eat what you kill or at least wear its fur, trophy hunting is a sin!
2. you hunt butt naked and kill with your bare hands to honor the goddess. Handax is already cheating!
>>
>>1072846
Get a .22LR and start with small game, like squirrels and rabbits. Try to make some friends with experienced hunters, knowledge of good locations and techniques is worth significantly more than gear.

Depending on where you live, turkey could also be a good starter hunt because all you need is a shotgun, camo clothes, and a call.
>>
>>1072846

Two important things:

>Learn where the heart and lungs are in any animals you may have to/want to kill. Aim for the heart/lungs. Those are the most realistically hittable targets (brain shots are a fucking meme) that offer a guaranteed kill that results in a quick death.
>Use as much of the animal as you can. Hides for clothing/bags/etc, sinew for cordage, brains for tanning (almost every animal has enough brains to tan their own hide), bones for stock/tools/handles, organs for cooking/bait

Additional: Never panic if something big and prone to violence comes crashing at your ass, like a bear. Keep your cool and drill it in the heart/lungs if you can't scare it off.

Thought I'd share some pics I took over the last two weeks on my overland expedition through the PNW, or as it it used to be known years ago a "camping trip." Going to post slowly as I go through them and edit them, feel free to ask any questions about the area, went from Northern California to the Canadian border along the Cascades, much of the trip on dirt and 100% dispersed camping.

Believe it or not, but /out/ also has a team and they have done quite well in the past. Under the guidance of the previous manager /out/ won the 2015 Autumn Babby Cup and got third place in the following 2016 Winter Cup.

/out/ will be able to play in the next Autumn Babby Cup if enough board interest can be gathered. So if you're interested answer the poll and post in this thread and we'll be able to see /out/ in Autumn!
In the meantime I've already done some things.

The first upcoming change for /out/ will be a new Victory Anthem. A little while ago what started as a whistling thread turned into something beautiful:
clyp (dot) it/mco3j2c5

The current /out/ roster hasn't really been updated for quite a while, so I made a poll with a couple of potential new players. Please answer the poll, it'll only take a minute or two.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc9y1ShcFUuHlHsIEt8lUK4322e2bnh5oDohUn-gXl1eCyZyg/viewform?usp=sf_link

For these new players some old players need to get the boot of course.
In random order those are:
>Everyday Carry
>Bug Out Bag
>Knife Thread
>Patch Thread
>Hammocks > Tents
>Leave No Trace
>Innawoods
These players have been chosen as they are rather generic things and not very representative of /out/ board culture.
Alongside this Geopooper and Geocache will be merged, becoming one player instead of two.

If you have ideas, suggestions etc feel free to post them in this thread, I'll get back you to as soon as I can.

/out/ indeed advanced, however a rather major event called The Cull occured were multiple teams (including /out/) with perceived low/no board interest were killed off for the greater good.
https://implyingrigged.info/wiki/Rigged_Wiki:News/The_Cull_Revisited

I have taken the task of reviving /out/ so they can play again in Autumn.
