Hi, /out/. Newfriend here. Have any of you lived on a boat in a marina? Can you detail your experiences, costs, safety, how it works, etc.? FWIW, I'm a young female with a large dog and I'm eyeing Seattle in particular (Pike Place, Queen Anne, Ballard, Fremont, UVillage, and Cap Hill neighborhoods). I'm well-aware it won't be glamorous. That's not what I'm looking for, anyway; just livable and reasonably challenging.
I have literally no experience with boats except as a passenger, but I'm ready and willing to learn if you recommend it. I love to experience new things and broaden my knowledge. I have almost a year to study and prepare.
I suppose it's also worth-nothing I'd love to take it out to open water if I have the money to do so, but it's unlikely to develop into a serious passion like it is for most people living in marinas.
Thanks, fellas.

There's some book called The Essentials of Living Aboard a Boat, I'd start there.
Hey, how dangerous are poisonous mushrooms? A friend of mine was saying you can't die from a little nibble test, I want to get out there and nibble some mushrooms, what's the risk?
Anyone out there been poisoned before?
>>1079003
From mild stomach ache to death. Don't try.
>>1079005
Can you really die from a little tiny nibble tho?
>>1079003
Your friend is retarded, and you should forever disregard anything they say. Setting aside the potential for death from anaphylaxis even from non-poisonous foods you've never had before, even a nibble of poisonous foods could result in anything from shitting your guts out to death.
I'll start
Tents that pitch with the inner first. Their mere existence makes me angry. Being in a very rainy country they are completely useless to me, but are still sold everywhere.
Also, knives that are overly thick. Do you want a knife or a wedge? Decide you dimwit.

Not a specific piece of gear, but when you buy gear and then a better/smaller version immediately comes out.

I will start of the discussion with a question, are the Millican Smith Roll Packs any good? They look really featureful but I am skeptical since there is so little online exposure of the bag. To boot, it looks really nice and classy.
Doesn't have a billion company logos splattered all over it and not a crappy neon material.
>>1076755
Should mention too that I am looking for a nice well-built daypack around 20-30L
You could definitely make it work. I'd look at some ultra light day packs instead though (Granite Gear for example, similar feature-wise, but much nicer materials and workmanship, I assume).
Looks like a decent pack. I'd be interested in anyone's experiences as well.
What does /out/ think?

It's a meme. Good tents can be used in a modular fashion.

because there is no rush, if I need some I dig up some

Some years, I just leave them in the ground over winter and dig them up as needed. I have to put 6 inches of straw mulch over them to prevent freeze damage though. If it is warm, you have about 3-4 weeks before they start sprouting again.

fuck, this early? I guess I'll harvest them all before the next big rain
Hi /out/ I need help from anyone who camps at banff.
I want to camp therein september, 2 nights and 2 days and know it's not enough to do most things there, but what should I do? I am a camping novice and will only have basic food/ camping setup and a car. Also dont want to go too far off the beaten track because I'm not from canada and dont want to deal with getting hurt by animals or anything. Should i bring fishing gear? Which lakes can I park near so I dont have to haul all my stuff? Which campsite is good? Is there a small hiking trail I could do? I'm used to lakes and many mile hikes but like I said I'm scared of something going wrong. I'm happy with just a lil taste of the place rather than going deep into the mountains.
>>1074743
also is the water too cold to swim? or will it be too cold to wear a bikini at the lakeside? am from texas so im thinking it's gonna be cold in comparison
>>1074745

I am /out/ for the long weekend but if the thread is still here Tues I will write you a nice reply. Camped there many times
Anyone up for meeting up near Casper WY?
A buddy of mine has a piece of undeveloped land up there that he we can have a good sized gathering on.
I figure anons from the Denver area can make the trip up and camp overnight and go back once traffic has died down however long that takes.
Anyway just trying to gauge interest.
Don't eat the brownies.
>>1074431
A few anons are planning on meeting in Grand Teton/Jackson for the eclipse if you feel like traveling. I'm in northern CO and would be a lot more willing to drive to Casper than Jackson, but you may want to go ask /k/ and /p/ so there would be a few more people meeting up
Im down

I'm looking to buy my first real hiking boots, but I'm not sure where to start. I think I'd like a waterproof midweight with decent traction, but I know fuck all about boots.
I'm a trail runner who's looking to get into casual hiking, with maybe more extreme shit later on. Any tips/suggestions?
whatever you buy will fall apart pretty quick. So don't spend too much money on a hiking boot.

I used to use cheap ass $50 pole from Academy Sports but that was because I was just getting into it. Any suggestions? My budget is around $150-200

Still gonna say that's a good budget for a Penn combo in whatever size you want.
Weighing options and thinking this might be our best bet. Not going to have enough time to build. We're n the process of selling. Looking for property, but likely won't be able to close on it until October.
Anyone have suggestions as to brand? 3 people and 1 dog. There will be snow. Was thinking something like pic related.
Your number 1 consideration should be a stove jack and a cast iron stove. If you're going to be in it for several months it may be worth laying some planks / a raised floor.
>>1080963
What's your budget? If you have any REAL winter, then I'd get a yurt if I were you. They cost more than a tent, but they come insulated, with a lockable door, and with proper walls. There's a company in Quebec I've been looking at recently that has pretty good deals, plus they're all genuine Mongolian workmanship. The resale value on this would also be a lot higher than on a tent, so you could pretty much make your money back once you're done (provided there's demand for yurts in your area).

I spent 4 months rain/snow camping (homeless) condensation is your worst enemy. Also air mattresses will make you cold.
Expect to burn a cord of firewood a week.
hey /out/, a buddy and I are planning a week-long trip to Colorado this December. I have been camping in fairly cold weather before (15 degrees fahrenheit), but not for this long or in weather as cold as Colorado will probably be this time of year.
Is there any essential cold-weather gear I need to get for this trip? Any /out/-approved spots in Colorado ideal for longer stays and hikes?

Herbal tea and a pee bottle.

Herbal tea? Why, specifically?
Definitely herbal tea. Maybe a pee bottle too. Also a couple of cans of garbanzo beans.
