Advice for fending off horseflies, blackflies, midges, and mozzies innawoods / innaswamp?

DEET doesn't do shit when 10% of the insects tend to ignore it. Anything besides full on face mask autism prevents these? Oh and I guess I could bare chest innafields for 5 days to build up mozzie immunity.

0/10 doctors recommend this

if it's that bad friendo you're gonna have to don a pic related. i know you might see it as the autisms but once you're in a proper bug jacket you feel like fucking iron man out there. it's a kind of respite and freedom that i can't explain, you just have to try it.

they make pants too which are useful as well in certain circumstances
>>

What I do to cover up my body is already like a bug jacket. I bought four of those surplus West German flak jackets (the ones innacity hipsters wear all the time) and matching pants for $50 4 years ago. I just tuck the shirt in my pants, tuck the pants into two layes of socks, and button up with gloves covering my wrists.

The only issues has been with the face so it looks like I actually have to wear a bug net, eh?

What I've also started doing is starting fires to keep them away. Something large like a bonfire at night or a series of cigars during the day.

If only your face is exposed to them then yeah, head net is what you need. Coghlan's™ has a simple one you drape over a hat and they have a deluxe one as well which has support hoops and stuff.

I see more and more of these types of outdoor clothing on people, for example some on my classmates on an outing recently and wondered if Jackets and Outdoor pants with shapes and materials like pic related has a special name

My wife's friend made fun of mine and called them "Adventure Pants" which kind of stuck.

I use them for camping or canoeing type stuff when kneeling or sitting a lot because they're reinforced at the seat and the knees and don't have butt pockets. Good ones should have plenty of strong belt loops every 4 inches, stud type snap fasteners and not riveted buttons, no zippers except maybe the fly. My Fjallraven Vidda Pros also have slots for foam knee pads, adjustable ankle straps and boot hooks. So far they've held up well everywhere except the knees.

Milsurp and slavshit. Also have a mom that loves you and gets /out/ shit for your birthday even though you're 25.
>>
>>1022243
Milsurp pants are usually pretty good on comfort and durability, although a lot of them are heavy. US summer BDU's are pretty awesome tho, 65/35 or 60/40 ripstop nyco depending on how old they are (anything after 1991 was grid ripstop and 65/35, anything before was "ripstop" and 60/40), available in sizes to fit pretty much any human to ever exist, can be had in meh condition for like $1-2 a pair routinely at places like Goodwill and Salvation Army or under $20 in lightly-used condition on the various milsurp websites. Still cloned by a half a hundred companies, new production shit can be had in any camo and color you can imagine, including pink urban camo.

The USMC assault pack is fucking awesome as well if you can stomach the camo pattern. It and the USMC ruck are made by Arc'teryx. They're extremely high quality. Can get the assault pack, which is ~35L, for around $60 most places in either unissued or excellent condition through places like ebay or the sportsman's guide, or if you live even remotely close to a Marine base check the pawn shops. Avoid the full ruck, it's cut specifically to work well with body armor and feels weird as shit without it.

I would avoid most other milsurp, it's cheap and usually durable at the cost of being heavier than 3 fucks.

Reusing commercial water bottles is a good idea too. Some of them are pretty fucking sturdy, like Smartwater and Fiji. They're all BPA-free.

If you have an even kinda-sorta /out/ job try to hook yourself up with pro deals or Experticity to get humongous discounts on /out/ shit. Discounts run 35-70%.

Check your local thrift stores/Goodwill/Salvation Army for shit. You'd be amazed at some of the stuff they have tucked into a corner, and you can usually get big-brand /out/ clothing for a couple bucks.

I like thread.

USGI sleep system is a good way to get lightweight bags and a bivy for pretty cheep.

Amazon has a bunch of good and cheap ponchos.

Never buy hiking meals. Pasta Sides, Instant Mashed Taters and ramen are the way to go. Jerky, tuna packs, and lotsa granola are way better and easier to use.

Fed-Ex envelopes are tyvek and can be used as decent dry sacks. I usually bring one or two for food. After a few trips they get pretty nasty, so toss and repeat.

Though I've never been, I find it really hard to believe that the plains states should be so low.
I dunno if it's just because a bunch of anons are butthurt because there are no trees there or something.

I do think WA and OR should be higher though.

Washington should be at least an 8 IMO. It has everything California has, but in a more easily accessible form with less people and less regulations. I can't speak for Oregon but it's probably the same honestly.

I attempted to climb Denali this year. My expedition turned back at high camp due to consistently poor weather (-40F degrees ambient, around -70F to -80F with wind chill).

Pic related is the view from 17,200ft. The specs of tents down below is the 14,000ft camp.

>when?
Started early May, was out for a little less than 3 weeks. Early season. Here's the NPS stats after we left the mountain. Of the 20 people who summitted by that time, over half suffered from frostbite.

>which route?
West Buttress

>how many people?
8 in our team, two ropes of 4.

>how much did it cost?
Around $10k CAD, after US exchange rate.

>how much did you carry and how much was portered in?
Carries were shared equally. Was about 140lbs of stuff per person at the start (everything has to be weighed before loading the airplanes to fly in). Loads got a bit lighter going up, but was still probably about 60lbs going up to high camp.

>what previous mountaineering experience do you have?
My technical experience was limited to a few small climbs around the Canadian rockies, as well as a 12-day mountaineering skills course that I also did in Alaska previously. I have lots of experience winter camping and snowshoeing in the Canadian rockies, which is most of what you need on a route like the West Buttress.

Carhartt canvas pants are my go to work pants. Cost around $30 on amazon and last 10 times as long as crappy dickies. Wouldn't really wear them /out/ though, canvas soaks up water and is heavy. If durability is your main concern, go canvas. If you're willingness to sacrifice a bit of durability for lightweight, comfortable, water repellant pants, buy some cheap nylon ripstop hiking pants. Got a pair of baggy Patagonia pants for $5 at goodwill a few months ago and they're amazing for everything besides working construction.

Say you're in the middle of fucking nowhere by yourself. You're miles away from civilisation, when you see silhouette of a man in the distance. What do you do?

Would you approach the man and greet him, would you walk away and go about your business, or would you observe him with apprehension?
