big rig vs big tuna.jpg

After 3 Summers of floating rivers in my ~$300 Walmart kayak, I want to upgrade to a real one.

I can't decide between the Jackson Big Rig or the Jackson Big Tuna.

I want something versatile that I can take in ponds catching bass and trout, rivers and reservoirs catching catfish, or inshore catching some saltwater fish.

But I also want something in the 500-600lb weight capacity range to carry all of my camping gear.

I like the Big Rig because it's wide and stable and built for fishing and has plenty of storage space. I like the Big Tuna because it comes with a live well, but there's a lack of storage space. It's a tandem so I guess I could bungee down my camping gear with it in solo configuration, but then it would get a lot more wet if I capsize.

Are there any other kayaks in the <$1,700 range that offer the width and size of the Big Rig but also comes with a live well? I could rig some crate into a live well that goes behind the seat but then I would be losing tackle storage space.

Might want to consider the Hobie mirage kayaks or the Native watercraft ultimate or mantaray.

Seems like one's better for you for fishing, and one's better because of camping. Which do you care about more? Pick that one.
I've learned before that sometimes the "do-it-all" kayak does nothing well. Granted, I know way more about whitewater boats than I do this kind. Anywhere you can go to demo these? Check out the trim, etc?
>>
>>1032083
First off, unless you're TRULY MASSIVE, as in 300lbs+, pretty much every kayak you can cram your camping gear in will have plenty of weight capacity to do so. The issue is storage room, not weight capacity.

That being said, pretty much all the actually-good fishing kayaks will have plenty of storage room for camping shit. All that front deck space is pretty much unused in an angling kayak because you really can't reach it when you're sitting in the kayak, and most of them have large tankwells in back that unless you're using as a livewell/cooler holder will be mostly empty.

What axe is /out/ approved?

I just got this nice Fiskars Finnish hand axe and I gotta say I was impressed by its chopping ability. The hollow handle made me a bit nervous at first but the more I use it the better I feel.

What do you use? Are large axes superior to hand axes/hatchets?

the hultafors on trips where i anticipate more splitting, the granfores where i i expect more felling or chopping off branches from fallen trees and such.

i really need to fix up the granfors. the edge is pretty beat up ATM and it makes me take the Hultafors more just cause i keep putting it off and cause the edge of the hultaforse is thicker it takes less maintainence

rambling aside, i love axes, i have a hankering to buy a new one soon

How do you like that handle? I've got the slightly older model with the orange handle, but I've felt the newer ones in stores and I'm not sure if I like it or not.

I took the day off from work to go hiking and have lunch in the woods today but as soon as i got out of bed i got a muscle spasm in my back. Right under my left shoulder blade.

Can't move much, laying on my side with a heat pad on. Took ibuprofen and water. Is there any trick you outists know that will allow me to get on the trail today?

Also I'm guessing the bed might be my problem. Maybe it's too soft?

Probably not your bed but more to do with your sleeping position and daily posture.

Do you have a rounded upper back, with your neck at a forward angle as if you've spent most your time reading? If so, it can stretch out the muscles in the upper and mid back that can give you the spasms.

Aside from painkillers and some lat stretches, there's not much you can do to make the pain go away right now. However, for the future I would recommend adjusting your posture to an upright one, with your shoulders sitting back and square, and your head nice and tall. You'll get fewer injuries that way.
>>
>>1031596
Long hot shower should help.

Otherwise, stretch. Pitcher's stretches help with that. The muscles you're most likely sore in are either the erector spinatus (runs along the spine and is what controls bending and shit) or your lats (latissimus dorsi).
>>
>>1031606
What's the best way to correct posture? I've heard trying to imagine your head is attached to a string and it's pulling you towards the sky is good. It's tough to make this habbit though.

So I'm making a YouTube channel which will have half decent editing and stuff which will be based around fishing.

I was wondering how if people here would even find watching that stuff interesting? I'll be using two cameras, one filming me and one waterwolf camera so I can get footage of playing the fish like you see in the pic.

Just wondering what your ideas are and thoughts?

Oh and it'll include river fishing for roach and chub and maybe pike. Lake fishing for carp and hopefully sea fishing

I like it anon, I like it a lot! Never heard of that camera before, that thing's the bees tits!

I guess the key is content. Don't get bored or discouraged, if you make good content and keep it coming, viewership will accumulate. Also if money's no object you should get a pic related just to throw in some extra cool footage of the ponds or lakes or whatever.

I've seen taxis go into Nat. Parks before. Probably for autismos like you two. Probably going to be like 60 bucks each way, spend the rest on tarps, cheap tents, cheap sleeping bags , and go to a dispersed camping site. Use a grate to cook minute rice or ramen in a 6 buck aluminum mess kit.

He knew euronymous was going to kill him, so varg killed him first.

This is the basic outline of a road trip I'm taking soon. The plan is to hit El Sanctuario de Chimayo, Santa Fe, Petrified Forest, Red Rock National Park, The Grand Canyon, Marble Canyon, Oljato-Monument, Arches National Park, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point. Is there anything I am leaving out on this route that you think I absolutely have to see?

Can't comment on Colorado/New Mexico, but I did a similar trip in Utah and Arizona. It would be a shame to do that road trip and skip past Canyon de Chelly. I probably enjoyed that place more than the Grand Canyon honestly. Definitely prioritize that over petrified forest. Mesa Verde is another really good place to check out, it has the biggest cliff dwelling in North America.

I would skip Sedona if I were you. It's pretty, but I don't know if it's worth the detour. Same with Monument Valley, entry is $25 (you can't use a parks pass), and all you can do is drive on a shitty road loop - one of the worst roads I've driven on. No hiking allowed. Very scenic, but you won't be able to enjoy it because you're not supposed to leave your car.

I don't know if you're aware, but Canyonlands is fucking huge and can't be explored without a decent time commitment. That said, it's amazing and worth going out of the way for.

What do you want to do in Sedona? It's a neat little town to stop and have dinner at, stay at one of their cool hotels, and spend a little time, but compared to the other areas you'll be seeing, it's small potatoes in terms of sheer sightseeing.

One change I'd make is in between Santa Fe and Boulder, take a detour to do the drive between Durango and Montrose just for the fact that it's an incredibly scenic (and terrifying, for sections) drive, and when you are around Montrose, you can take a detour to the north to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which IMO is more spectacular than the Grand Canyon, at least for a stop on a road trip.

Any local /out/ists into naked hiking?

I like to pack simple card and boardgames, stuff you can teach easily and pack. Tons of options. Just picked up something new to try, a deck of Hanafuda cards. They are kinda small/plasticky, tons of games to play that involve trick taking or solitaire play. Plus they are tiny.

They did a bit, and the typo on this page makes it seem like a bit of an excuse. That said even if they're not out till summer I'll be fine with it. Never been sick after filtering through my squeeze but the guarantee would be nice especially since a lot of creeks I use have swimming holes upstream. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

They need to make a shit filter. You shit, piss in the bag and squeeze it for water.

Have you ever used a public barbecue grill at a park before?

I've walked past them numerous times and they're always filthy with black charred remains of whatever has been cooked on it caked all over the grill bars.

Who would ever use one of these? They seem so unsanitary, you'd get sick eating food that has been prepared on one of these.

Maybe I'm all wrong about it. Do you meticulously clean a public barbecue grill before cooking on it?

It depends how pedantic you wanna be about it but here's a good process for this sorta thing:
• Wire brush
• Spray with oil (pam, etc) and sprinkle with salt
• Polish the salt/oil mixture with crumpled up foil
• Wash with water/rag
• Getcher fire started

The same thing works great for crusted 'n rusted cast iron skillets and other cookware
