What have you found on your adventures?
Pic related. Stocked first aid kit, drafting set, grip gloves, slightly rusted dive knife with plastic sheath, Zelda bracelet I cleaned the rust off of. Not pictured: drawstring college backpack the drafting set was in, circular cooking grate

I scavenge sites after people leave, looking for easy firewood or cool items. A man and his son had left behind a Hornett .177 caliber air rifle on a shooting trip, worth around $140 new. I decided to leave it hoping they would return and pick it up. The circular grate, the gloves, and the air rifle are the only items I've found at an empty campsite along with some lighter fluid. Everything else was innawoods.

That's the drafting set with the compasses?

I guess not as strange as anon who found the clown nose deep innawoods.

Too bad nobody buys porn mags anymore because that was always the best back in the day when you would stumble upon some guy's porn stash that got dumped before his wife found it.

All abandonded and none worth stealing. I feel insulted you'd imply I was a thief. Good day to you, sir.

You are correct, that is the drafting set.

Just went to REI in denver to pick up a few items that i wanted to see in person before buying.
What a fucking shit show.
Breeders fucking everywhere .
Kids and strollers and just huge throngs of humanity in general.
EVERYONE of these cocksuckers will be clogging up the trails every weekend this summer for 150 miles in every direction.
I was so much happier when backpacking was for just a few nerds and not one bit popular.
What went wrong?

First of all, you are a massive faggot and probably just jealous of the hen other kids for having mommies who will go to REI with them.

To explain for the other people in the thread, though, REI is like other sporting goods stores that have indoor amusement parks. With its rock climbing wall REI is used by young mothers as a sort of daycare for their kids. Never go into a Scheels if you have one in your state. It's the same sort of thing; the one local to me has a fucking Ferris wheel inside it. It has nothing to do with sporting goods and everything to do with the "other shit" inside the store.

Hi there o

School me on pile and pertex combos, whats they're best use? Which brand and any user experience.

Looking to get one as a general use outdoors jacket.
33 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
They're warm but bulky. Good for the cold and wet when a normal jacket would get soaked through and the insulation would collapse.
>>
I am a fan.

MOD PCS smock (pertex and light fleece) for warmer weather.

Montane Extreme smock (pertex and pile) for colder weather.

I love the system. Completely windproof when zipped up, but easy to vent with side, pit, pocket and neck zips. Breathable but rapid drying.

I wore my PCS smock up Ben Nevis, down to 0c plus windchill, just over a merino base, and was happy as long as I kept moving.

It's not a layer that you take off.

The advice about wearing against your skin is golden. It maximises the wicking and the venting and thus increases the useable temp range.

I carry a poncho low land to layer when it REALLY buckets down,, and have been thinking about adding a lightweight hardshell to wear over it in the high country, but desu if you don't mind temporary wet/dampness it's not necessary.

Geocaching would be cool if cool stuff were in it, but it's like the real world equivalent of opening a random chest in an RPG and finding a needle, 2 coins and some gears.

Sup sc/out/s.

I'm new to the Sonoran desert and am hoping to do some backpacking. I can pretty much just start hiking in the wilderness right out my front door.

So my question is this: how much water should I carry and what's the best way to carry?

I was sort of thinking one 2 liter platypus, two 2 liter soda bottles (one to stash for the way back) and two 1 liter water bottles. Seems like a lot of weight/bulk. What do you guys do in the desert?

It depends on time of year and day plus how long and difficult your trip will be. You are going to sweat more than you ever thought you could. Make sure you replenish lost salt and get potassium
>>
>>1021221
In the beginning I'm probably just gonna do a 2 day there and back either this spring but definitely will be attempting again in the summer.

Hadn't thought about salt replenishment though. Possibly will bring some beef jerky to snack on, one of my favorite hiking foods.
>>
I wanna say bait. This time of year where I'm at you need five gallons a day if you're walking long distance and since you say two days you're gonna definitely need those five gallons

This might seem a little odd but does anyone have any good pictures of people camping on little islands?

Making a campsite with a fire ring is like a cancer in the forest. It starts small, but other campers see it and use it. Each new camper is more careless than the ones before, they cut and salvage wood for their fires, they destroy the ground vegetation, they litter the site, they run out of places to crap. I grows and it grows, and becomes a festering wound. We have to prevent it from happening, and surgically remove one as soon as we find it

Hey /out/
Where is there in the lower 48 states of the US could I go and, assuming I have the requisite knowhow and skill, live in the wilderness and rarely, if ever, see another human face?

If I wanted to be a true hermit in the middle of the wilderness, where best to go?

Private property.

When you reach the age of 20, you'll realize that you can't really ever be a true hermit in the modern world, and when you reach the age of 26, you'll realize that you don't want to be one anyway. Best you can hope for is to buy some property with good coverage from your neighbors by means of hills or woods, set up a cabin or trailer on that, and live minimally, potentially as a tradesman doing jobs from home.

Snipe hunting, wiping with poison ivy, lighter fluid hair removal, phantom dooking at scout camp: the outdoors is an embarrassing place. Share your best moments.

poke frowny faces in all the leaves on the ground at a popular campground.

its one of those things the next group might not really notice but when one of them do its pretty much the scariest thing i can think of, especially if the campground is remote

This summer I am backpacking for the first time in my life. I decided to do the Southern Upland way, a 212 mile (340 km) coast to coast trip in Scotland. The reason I went for this specific route is because it isn't too hard. However, the main reason I am even doing this is losing weight. It's not a small route, that's for sure, but there aren't any big peaks. I have a full month, 30 days, to do it and that should be more than enough.

I want to share the route and the gear I am taking. Hopefully you guys can give me some feedback and what not. Just here to shoot the shit.

This is the stuff I am taking. I decided on a small 40 liter pack. I know that is small as fuck for a 30 day hike but I will be storing water, food, emt and small stuff on molle patches on the outside.

I don't plan on taking a GPS because the trail is very obvious and there are signs everywhere. I am taking my phone to call home every couple of days so if I really can't find the way I can use Google maps.
>>
Like I mentioned in the OP I am a pretty fat dude and one of the main reasons I am doing this trip is to lose some weight. I don't plan on eating more than 3000 calories a day depending on how much I walk. Every other day I pas a small town where I should be able to stock up on some food.

Just to throw it out there, because I know questions are coming. I weigh 235 lbs (107 kg) and my condition is pretty bad. Some parts won't be easy, that's for sure. Atleast I have a full month to make it.
>>
Just sharing a couple of sights on the trail to hopefully inspire some other Eurofags to do it. It's a very unknown trail but it looks very good and all the reviews are amazing.
