So I live in an area with a lot of alligators and I go camping on the empty huge swamp islands but it's full of alligators, so to get rid of them me and some buds are building a 7 foot long 5 foot tall giant middle minnow trap for alligators that would be halfway submerged in the water just enough that alligators could get in to get the bait but not enough to get out, I'd figure it'd catch some of them atleast or maybe the alligators would see their friend and realize not to fuck with the island, pic is a snake minnow trap, imagine much bigger with much larger holes
I forgot the question, do y'all think it'll work?
How would you secure it in place properly?

Have fun explaining that to the game wardens.
Know of any abandoned places in central/northern California? I've been geting more into visiting abandoned places. I've tried google and all that shit but they're usally just torrist guides. I've been to the circular barracks on Treasure Island SF and to the Byron Hotel so far.
Pic related, I took it of the Hotel
I'd be interested in any around Michigan. Though I do know of Marlborough, and the Belle Isle Zoo, I'm sure there's more.
More touristy, but have you been to Sutro Baths? Pretty fun to climb around on a warmer day
>abandoned mine
>dont stare at the bum hole
Did you know the kilt evolved from the practice of basically wearing your "sleep system?"
It was two lengths of wool fabric sewn together, because of the limitations of looms at the time, and gathered around the waist and pinned over the shoulder.
They took them off at night and slept in them.
>Everyone knows that, dumbass
Okay but why aren't you doing it today like a real highlander? You know you want to try this shit.
It is good for different heat conditions. If it is hot outside then the bottom left configuration is best, if cold bottom right.
If the ground is wet then the bottom hem can be lifted up to be kept dry and can be lowered again later.
Sporran of some kind is a must have as it weighs down the front flaps. If not there then a gust of wind can easily lift up the front flaps exposing your genitals to the elements.
Disadvantages are it take a while to put on and you will find yourself having to readjust slipping belts and such on a fairly regular basis while on the road.
Or you just wear a cloak.

>Or you could just wear a penis gourd.

I'm new to /out/ and have never really put any thought into going hiking/camping and such.
I've had an absolutely horrid past few months socially, and I'm looking to just get away from social media/family for a weekend, or even just have something to do when I get fed up.
What motivates you guys to go innawoods alone? I have plenty of woods around me I could easily go to, but how does one stay hyped and not bail out once the sun starts going down?
Also, overnight camping off the campsite is technically illegal in a lot of the places I go hiking nearby, how does one deal with this?
Any advice or discussion would be greatly appreciated.
>>1036343
Stealth camping can be an option. Read up about it, and use your own discretion.
As for motivation, personally I just prefer the outdoors and being alone. No super special reason. I don't experience it as 'hype.' I take lots of pictures though, that can be rewarding.
>>1036343
>What motivates you guys to go innawoods alone?
curiosity.
i work a white collar 9 to 5. live in a huge metro area, so i like to disconnect on the weekends.
i started /out/ perpetually. first it was day hikes only. then day hikes + tent camping in heavy use campgrounds. then twnt camping in "wilderness" campgrounds. then 24 hour backpacking.. 48 hour backpacking.. 72 hour backpacking..
truth be told, i never go alone.
>>1036343
>how does one deal with this?
You don't be a dick by camping where you aren't supposed to
Pretty sure I know what it is...but I want to believe it's something else. Measured at about 27" btw.

Looks sorta like a Drum. Could also be a Carp. Got a location for it?
Hello /out/
I'm a regular lurker and haven't seen much about this,
I'm personally am a trip happy individual, i like to star gaze all night in the shanendoah, and then follow up with 6am to midday hiking 4-7miles.
There is significantly more wildlife in the early hours, less people, and its cool enough to wear heavier gear in case the burr get stupid.
Also was gonna dump pics
does anyone here do a monster commute just to live innawoods?
>>1036168
No but it wouldn't be a problem at all.
Nice corolla, looks very clean

my friend just bought land an hour and a half from where he works. He was planning on working, and his wife would farm and tend to animals. The plan went to shit when his wife got pregnant. They realized they live in the middle of nowhere, and have no neighbors or family close by to help with stuff. Unfortunately, they are planning to move back to the city. They are lonely. Nice property too. It was there dream,,,
What was the most increadible phenomenon you saw on your outdoor trips?
Last august got to photograph noctilucent clouds somewhere near Umeå, Sweden.
No photo will ever do it justice- watching a rain shower across bio bay while I was paddling it in Vieques was so incredible my brain struggled to reconcile what I was looking at. It was like Disney magic. That combined with Looking down and seeing every fish shark and turtle go about their lives was just such an incredible experience.
Seeing the glow caves in New Zealand was pretty amazing. Probably in second place. Its not everyday you get to repel a waterfall in a cave dotted in little glowing lights. Might have been a close tie with bio bay if the guide was not such a fucking jabranoi.

Ball lightning. Scary yet fascinating.
Does anyone else here never bring anything with them when they're /out/? I don't bring a phone or a camera or anything.
Do you like my garden
It's decorated using random crap I found or had laying around.
This isn't great.
Is it possible to get lost in a cave and never being able to find your way out?
>inb4 pic of that poor fella who got stuck upside down in a hole and died
>>1035937
That's not getting lost though he got trapped. I mean literally wandering around until you run out of water or food.
Can anyone tell me what bird this feather is from? I found it hiking in virginia. Figured you all would be the best to ask.
Bald eagle you criminal. Better claim to be injun

survivalism
>>1035629
thanks for the list and tips
i'd really like a book just to take with me normiecamping just to have something to practice while i'm out all day/night.
there's really no survivalism bible for /out/?

Talk about fishin
Split tail flukes are gr8 for flippin. I also think this lake is about to go to shit I've been seeing a lot of floating fish and it's smelled really fishy lately. I blame the carp.

I do that on a weekly basis, but at the beach instead.
I'm totally confused on how to approach plant identification.
I wan't to be able to look at every plant on my property and know what it is. But field guides are proving near useless, as they are so broad in scope, and yet only cover for instance medicinal or edible plants.
The phone apps to upload images I've tried like 5 of them and all are terrible even with a perfect 1080p upload on a white background.
It seems like there is a system of describing the plant in scientific terms, for instance the arrangement of leaves, shape of leaves, leaf margins, stem types, flowers. color, region, where it's growing etc... but where exactly is the database for looking things up?
Everything just seems really shitty to me.
Buy a book about plants in your region.
A book with a good dichotomous key can definitely help, trying to picture key plants down to the species can be pretty difficult.
>>1034995
>how to approach plant identification.
There are roughly 422,000 known species of plant (iplants.org)
Don't try to learn every plant, that's just stupid.
Here's what you need to know: Any fruit shaped like a raspberry, any fruit resembling a strawberry, and any fruit that has a crown like a blueberry is edible (avoid smooth berries). All parts of all grasses and all parts of all brassicas are edible, raw or cooked. All ocean (not lake) seaweed is edible cooked. All bolettes that don't bruise blue are edible cooked.
