thought about making my own security camera setup but for as cheap as possible as i only need it for my front door, i don't want anything fancy but i want you to help me figure out a way to do it, i planned on getting a few cheap webcams off ebay, they can go for as little as 3 dollars, the only thing i am trying to figure out is how to connect it to my pc, whether i should spend another 15$ or so and get a cam that can transmit wirelessly, any advice would be appreciated, i would prefer if it stands below 45$

How do you do professional quality electronics painting?
Google and youtube tutorials only go as far as spraying them down with rattle cans which may look nice sometimes but even the smallest amount of paint often makes whatever you painted unusable.
How do i paint something with the quality of [insert custom controller service here]?

What do you mean by unusable? Take the parts that are to be painted off first and don't paint around the exposed electronics.

How do you convert PC Video to VHS and vice versa?

This guy does it in his video using a VGA to RCA converter box. But he doesn't explain what is connected to what or how the AUDIO is connected. He made it very confusing.

The only thing I can make out is that his converter box has a VGA IN has a cable connected to it and that the YELLOW Video out has a cable connected to it.

He also seems to be using a UCEC USB Capture Card hooked up to his USB.

>>

>But he doesn't explain what is connected to what or how the AUDIO is connected.
line out from laptop, use 3.5mm to red white/phono cable.
can only guess he is using capture card to check the output is working or to view what he has recorded by playing back the tape, there isn't any other screen shown to look at the playback.
>>
the simplest way to output video is to use an old video card with NTSC output (usually called TV OUT) like this Geforce 5500 (first hit on google). some old laptops also have this TV out jack. for sound, you use an adapter cable with 3.5mm TRS plug on one end and 2 RCA males on the other, which you plug into the sound card.

to convert back, there's a lot of USB video capture boards, like the Dazzle from Pinnacle. it handles both video and sound.

Need aluminum molds CNC'd into sinker dicks. Have several ideas and i will work with you if you will work with me.

I'll mail you plastic versions of whatever you need or blank mold or if you are handy with a dremel i will buy one sided carved and polished blocks for a mold.

Sand casting sucks and i need to make a lot.

Will be a couple weeks until i have cash but we can email in the meantime and finalize price and design. I will even send you a shipping label. 0 out of pocket on your end.

I'm looking for a way to maybe connect a Garmin GPS to a smartphone to then have some sort of satellite connection where there is no cell service or WiFi. I work in Northern Ontario for long periods of time and have no means of communication. I know there are sat phones you can buy, though they are very expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

gps is receive only. a gps gets signals from multiple satellites and calculates a position from that data. that's it. no transmissions.
>>
Not happening. Completely different satellites and you need service go begin with. This isn't something you can DIY a solution for. Set yourself up a decent repeater base station and get a good radio.
>>
Just connect the red wire on the GPS device to the black wire on the smartphone. Don't listen to the people above, they're just Satellite phone shills.

Long story short I have a old house what kept on getting very bad damp on the whole bay window.
I got told by someome the main cause of it was probably because the front garden had been brought up higher.it covered a bit of an air brick and about 3 bricks below it.

So I've dug out this trench as well as putting in a. New damp course (one that goes in the mortar)bleached all the bottom inside bricks. When I get round to rendering it going to use a damp proof chemical in it as well

>question
Now I have a big horrible trench i was going to throw some stones in there.
I want to know is there a specific type to use ? Something that prevents my wall from getting damp.

Had similar issues on bed room wall. Air flow solved everything. Left nothing there at all. There is a garden in front of the trench to keep persons away from it.

Does anyone have tips on how to clean a bathtub/shower that hasn't had a lot of love for a while?

I went a bit too long between cleaning my shower, and now it's got these discolored stains by the drain and on the sides. I've tried about 3 different kinds of cleaning solutions, which do very little. I've used the magic erasers which do a lot, but still leave a bit of the discolored stains no matter how much I scrub. And the most effective thing so far has been using the green armor mold away stuff. But the discoloration is still there.

A guy at the hardware store suggested using Baking soda and vinegar, which sounds like he's just fucking with me because that shit is what you use to make school project volcanoes.

I would just like for this tub to look good as new, does anyone have any tips for miracle jobs?

Pic somewhat related, not my shower.

Bleach. Undiluted bleach.

Plug drain, fill with 1/8 of bleach. Let sit for an hour, scrub with a green 3m pad or magic ereaser.

Bleach will cause the drain to rust but if it's proper stainless you just wipe it off when done.
>>
>>1199413
As a complete novice who has never used bleach.

how safe it is after the fact? Do I need to let the shower run for like 20 mins after?

I have a cat, do I keep her out of the bathroom forever?
>>
>>1199416
If you get a bottle of Chlorox or generic bleach, it is already diluted. You can stick you hand right in there and suffer no damage. Just make sure you move rugs and show curtain out of the way and don't wear nice clothes. You'll want to rise the shower, but you'll have to do that anyway to wash the crud away. Just 30 seconds of flushing will clear the bleach all away.

The smell will go away quickly once you flush it. Open a window or turn on the fan during to pull out the fumes. You cat will probably hate the smell and will stay away from it until the smell is gone.

An Rpi can't provide enough current to drive the motors for an RC car big enough to mount an Rpi on. If you try you'll only break the pin or the chip. 5AA batteries in series will provide 7.5V. The Rpi likes 5V. You'll probably break it if you try. Buy a 5V regulator on Ali or ebay, and plug your Rpi into that, they cost almost nothing. 4AA batteries would give you 6V, which is still above what the Rpi wants. It'll probably work, but you risk breaking it. Your motors will be a lot weaker, though.

The chip on the car likely has two parts: A receiver and a motor controller. The receiver outputs pwm to the motor controller, so what you'll want to do is look at how the pwm is output, and then mimic that with your Rpi.
http://rcarduino.blogspot.com/2012/05/interfacing-rc-channels-to-l293d-motor.html does something similar, but with an Arduino. Instead of plugging the receiver into an Arduino and then the Arduino into the motor controller, you should plug the receiver into the Rpi, figure out the format of signals it outputs, and then figure out a way to have your Rpi transmit the same signals to the motor controller.

they seem to never carry some really nice brands such as wera and dalluge.I dont really care for husky tools and forget about finding a professional framer tool belt. but for 99% of diyers its just fine. Of course if price is always your priority harbor freight/ princess auto will do.

Amazon. Whichever local big box has saleson at the time. Rona usually has best regular price on bar clamps. Canadian Tire is good for miscellaneous when on 50% off sales.

Only thing I will go out of my way for is lumber. If I need nice dimensioned wood I go to locally owned lumber yards.

Long post.
Okay, so I recently got an old Victoria/Elliott milling machine for cheap. Got it set up in my workshop and it seems to run just fine. Motor sounds good, gearbox seems fine, auto-feeds work. Runout measured on the spindle is less than a thou.
The machine is at least 50 years old and hasn't been used in 20 years so it does need some cleanup before it can be put to proper use again, but I am quite happy.
I do however have two questions for DIY:
1. The sump in this machine is fucking filthy. Old coolant, grease and oil, left over from decades past, don't think it has ever been cleaned. I have a small pump on hand and it did a decent job getting the old coolant and some of the filth out, but most of the thick old crap remains. I don't want to throw away too much cash on a special pump that I'll only use a few times, so does anyone have any good ideas for a cheap solution?
2. I am a bit strapped for cash so I resorted to buying some cheap Chinese crap tools to get me startet. Milling chuck with collets, some bits, etc, and I'm thinking of buying a cheap dividing head and a small rotary table as well. I know that this stuff isn't quality, and I am planning on replacing it with some better stuff once I can afford it, but I'm curious to hear from anyone else who has bought the cheap Chinese crap. How bad is it? Can you still do a decent job with it if you take it easy and don't expect too much?

Amazing find!

1: Take it apart, photograph it as you take it apart so you know how to put it back together. Degrease and clean everything. Make some tools out of wire to reach hard to reach places. Grease/oil it up and put it back together.

2: Cheap shit is cheap because it is very inconsistent, either in spec or durability. Sometimes, you get one that works perfectly and lasts a long long time. Most of the time it is shit, is off spec, and lasts about as long as 1 good job.
>>
>>1204443

Thanks Anon!

1. Good general advice, actually bought new grease and oil today. The sump is a different beast though, it is in the base of the machine, so it is really hard to get at, but I guess wire tools is the way I have to do it. Gonna take forever :p

2. Good point, I don't expect the milling bit's I bought to last long, but if I'm lucky the chuck and collets will be tolerable.
>>
I assume pic related? Looks super nice, how much was it? Can you take the sump off/apart? If I were you and had the time, I'd love to completely take apart the thing and clean the ever-living shit out of each individual part. De-rust what needs de-rusting, paint what needs painting, etc. Old tool refurbishment is one of my favorite things to do.

I don't know your milling experience (I, personally, have none), but cheap tools seem like a good idea for now until you gitgud at the craft. Better to fuck up the 3 dollar bit than the 30 dollar one. Plus learning how to do a good job on shit tools makes you that much better when you get the good stuff.

Much of that tree is indeed dead. Once the bark starts coming off that means everything is dead under it. You have to cut off all the dead branches because they are more likely to break and drop on someone. They also look like shit. It will be a lot of work and may not be worth it. A huge portion of the trunk is dead also. I doubt the tree will ever recover.

How do I build my own acrylic cases for projects? Acrylic sheets are cheap and available in plenty of places. Laser cutter shops are popping up everywhere and charge like $15/setup $1/min of use. Or if I'm feeling adventurous I can get an acrylic scoring knife and break/sand sheets to what I need.

But I'm retarded when it comes to designing something like picrelated. How do I come up with designs like that? Is there a reference anywhere?

I want a nice enclosure for some electronics that opens at the top with a hinge. But really just interested in learning how to design small project boxes. It sounds simple unless you try to think about what you actually have to do.

>>
Start simple and work you way up.

Buy some IPS Weld-On 4 and some applicators and some cheap acrylic sheets. Practice making some basic boxes before you try and do complex ones.

Once you can weld a box together that doesn't look like shit start doing more complex shapes.

Laser cutter makes things way easier, but a dill and jigsaw can still do most things.

Cut out joints and piece them together, like a 3d puzzle
