So im changing the motor of my bicy-moto for an electric one
im thinking in using a polisher motor
already have the PWM circuit
and a few batterys 12V 12 Amp/h

/diy/ got any suggestions?
you think thats the best motor?

The best value for ebike batteries are the HobbyKing 4s 4ah hardcases at ~$25.
Electric motors both spin too fast and lack torque - so figure out your gear reduction first. The smallest pulley should be ~14teeth to really grab well which puts an upper limit on single stage reduction. Look into jackshafts to get another gear reduction in the same space.
The freewheel that came on your bike probably sucks - look into replacing that.
Honestly, just buy a BBSHD kit.
and visit 'endless-sphere' before buying something shitty
>>
>>1200482
Tell us how it goes. I like my 66cc engine because its quick as shiy and looks like a 49cc. I like the idea of electric but dont have any experience.
>>
Lots of tech for ebikes now, and lots of kits - both middrive and wheel hub. The former are much better in hilly areas. I'd suggest buying a kit, it's the easiest way.

As for batteries, use lithium packs. (18650's are safest). The kit should be 36 or 48 volt if you want any power at all. DO NOT USE LEAD ACID - their weight is far too much and the discharge plane means you start losing power before your battery is even halfway discharged.

Is there a way to make core pattern molds for casting without having to cut and open the piece in question, /diy/kes ?

Did you watch this guy already?
Where are you starting from? Like did you make your own model or do you have like an aluminum piece you're just trying to duplicate?

Why not lost wax/ceramic casting?

He, dude, my casting hobby hasn't even come out of my head, i was just trying to research my shit before doing something stupid and i just couldn't find a solution to the problem.
To get you situated, i want to start a metal casting hobby in the future so i could make my own mechanical parts. I got inspired by this myfordboy dude: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCNC9gjgYrzLfyMQmp31DnjA
It seems really cool and i dream of having a shop with a "library" of patterns/molds/core patterns for hollow parts for the reasons mentioned above, you got it ?

Cool. watch tubalcain, he has an older series on casting, he hasn't done much lately.

he seems a bit more indepth than myfordboy.

This was one of the best sites I found
http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com

Refractories are consumable, so don't feel bad if your first setup doesn't last that long. Waste oil burning seems a strong way to go.

My fantasy is to get into the aforementioned lost wax casting, and get a 3d printer printing my models with the wax.

To answer your question, no, not really If you're using a flask eg- cope and drag green sand shit. I don't really see how you could do it without opening up the flask after setting everything up, but you have to open it up anyway to take the original mold out anyway.

The bad part about lost wax casting is making the wax models, and you need a kiln to set and pre heat the ceramic before you can pour.

what is that, some sort of linear slide?

i was opening a motorcycle crankcase to get some parts and thought i had gotten all the bolts. i thought maybe the halves were corroded shut so i used chisels to break it apart. only after i cracked the shit out of it did i realize there were two small thru bolts holding the fucker together. i thought they were for a little plate that holds a tube down.

Well, now you know never to use a chisel to separate crankcase halves even if all the bolts are out.

i'd like to make a wood coffee table that has folding legs and is less than 2" tall when folded.

was thinking of using a 1" tall plank of wood and metal rods (or thin pipes) for legs. i know nothing about carpentry or mechanical engineering - trying to figure out how to attach the rods to table top. any suggestions?

are there special hinges/attachment points for attaching a rod to a flat surface so that the rod can pivot 180 deg?

i was thinking of something like pic related. the black part is the metal leg, and the blue part is the "hinge" that would attach to the wood with screws. does this hinge have a special name? how can i stop the metal leg's rotation at a specific angle (e.g. when it's unfolded 90 degrees to table top)?

>Looking for creative uses for a working angle grinder motor

That's almost as bad as saying "I have several nice bolts. What do?"

Just keep it. Or take it apart to see how adaptable the parts might be.

You have a switch, a motor, some gears. It might have a variable speed motor.

All of these can be used in projects. Typically, I start with a project first, and then I think about parts. If you don't have any projects in mind, just add it to your collection of junk that will probably never be used, but when you need a specific item, that pile of junk can be a nice resource.

This board has way too many of these "I have so-and-so, What do" threads.

I was going to repot my philodendron and I have a bag of soil that's been sitting on my patio for over a year (winter freeze and all). Is it still OK to use? I mean, it's just dirt right?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1199339
yes

You may need to pick up some fertilizer though. The water soluble N-P-K in the bag of Miracle Grow may have been washed away if exposed to constant rain. If no holes in the bag are present and the garden soil remained relatively dry, it should be 100% fine to use.
>>
>>1199342
Yeah, The bag has been in a grocery bag the whole time. I need a new pot as a result of mineral leaching and growth, though.
>>
>>1199339
>Philodendron
Put it in a plant pot filled with sawdust and sand.

Philodendrons have absolutely no care or concern about the quality of the soil. They grow from the moss filled crevices of trees in the rainforest.

In fact, if you look at the vining philos... At the bottom of each node on the vine there's a brown nodule which, if submerged in water will produce roots. The same nodes are air roots that hang in the humid air collecting moisture. To my knowledge, air has a pretty shitty NPK profile.

In fact, using even light applications of fertalizers can burn and hurt philos

It's a shit trade. If you want to work with stone be a bricklayer or do some shit with concrete.
>>
It's a great secondary skill. You need to know how to lay brick or tile or concrete first, and then you can pick up stone jobs as a bonus.

Hardly anyone STARTS with the notion to install fieldstone/flagstone/etc... it's always like "yeah, we can stretch the budget by like 6 grand to make it look good instead of generic."

Unless you can market to new builders that want custom pool features, stonecutting is kindof a sideline.

OTOH, if you think you want to be "that stone guy" for doing natural facade work and fireplaces inside log cabins and shit, and are willing to follow the work, do what pleases you my dude.

You should know the types of stone natural to your business base. Limestone granite basalt marble quartz soapstone, etc.... maybe start at a custom cabinet place as a countertop specialist?

Most expert stonecutters learned from cutting local stone for local builds. A dying trade.

Thickness and diameter of steel will be a factor.

I would suggest solid invar if you want tolerances below 10 thousandths

otherwise temperature is going to have a major effect

Hey /diy/, I recently got a RPi3 and decided to build a small remote controlled robot with it for my brother's birthday. I can easily set up a python script to control the GPIO pins and move the robot using an SSH connection but I need help on the physical part. I am very new to hardware (I've only worked on PC and its components when it comes to hardware) and I don't even know how to begin.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a Raspberry Pi 3B to do the processing, and I also have a motor with two wheels from an RC I bought last year but never used. I heard that if I connect the motor directly to the Pi it will basically fry it. Do I need a controller or is there a way to "bypass" it and just connect it straight to the pi? Also, do I need any other components except from the pi, motor and wheels (and perhaps the controller)?

Im wanting to render around a window im going to guess each side is around 3.5 meter squared then under it maybe 2.5 meter squared.

so 9.5 meter squared altogether.

How much sand and cement should I buy to cover this whole surface ?

Do I need to add in lime ? Someone told me a while back its not needed.

I also want to add in a water proofer do I add this into the render or the plaster (when i go to skim it)

oh and do I need to pva the walls beforehand ?

>>
>>1203979
You should worry about fixing that leaky wall before "rendering" it.
>>
>>1203979
9.5m2 is an area
Sand and cement are solid tangible objects in the real world, they have a volume in m3
The two units measure different things, you cannot convert between them

Easiest to get - mineral oil/paraffin/baby oil/horse laxative (has the benefit if you use baby oil you can say it's made with real babies, or if you buy it as horse laxative you get it in 5 litre containers)
Most prestigious - tung oil (can be a slow finish to apply, and maybe not recommended for people with nut allergies)
Traditional - 1/3 walnut oil to 2/3 beeswax
Coconut - Yes, see also recipes with beeswax
Olive - risk of it going rancid
No, just no - linseed
>>
Linseed polymerizes. Turns into something else. Great for furniture, shit for anything else. What the other guy said.
Actually it's OKAY for furniture. It's not even a good one really at all.

So I bought this from lowes to replace an old one, installed it, and wired it.
I have little experience doing any of this and my attic is full of some sort of old cellulose / wood insulation.
When I finished and turned the light on it threw the breaker.
I'm not sure what I did wrong.
Suggestions?

You are really not giving us enough information to help you. Try taking some photos of the wires, the connections, etc and posting them. There are probably 99 things that could be wrong and the insulation in the attic isn't one of them.
