I have a pair of old good earbuds that smell like used sweaty plastic. I tried disinfectant, vinegar and two types of deodorant. Is there a proper way to remove the smell ?

Did you take off teh round plastic cover on the end and see if there's earwax right on the speaker itself?

Also, check the IP rating before using liquid cleaners.

buy relatively cheap in-ear headphones and replace them regularly
or expensive over ear headphones and clean them regularly

seriously in-ear ones are not designed for long term use

You might try sealing them in a bag with baking soda for a while alternatively put them in the freezer it might kill bacteria

Are there any blueprints for things. I have nothing in mind just things I can build.

Secondly, could I copy someone else's house plans and just change it a bit. How big a deal is it. From what I can tel architects do it anyway and forgot a load of shit half the time that needs fixed later when they are mid build?

I have googled.

Seen things. Some I don't understand.

I'd like to see some real world exmaoles from people on here.

But with the building plans is where I'm very confused.
Seen so many houses which look identical but insides were different.
Seen architect plans which were copied and nothing ever said.

They do seem borderline distracted opposed to deliberately doing things incorrectly on the plans.

You can do whatever you want, but in most places you'll need someone to sign off on something you want to build.

I'm trying to build a shed -- only I have a unique problem here.

The foundation is shitty English mud, and it's not even level.

I'm sort of stuck in a theoretical debate with my dad as to how this is supposed to go down.

He says we should dig a few inches into the soil and cement it.

Well I think if you do that you're gonna have the foundation start to sink from a corner over the years.

I suggested we should place gravel down without digging at all.

He says we'll need to dig as least a little bit and line the bottom of the gravel with wooden planks.

Which is it /diy/ ??

>>
>>1204473
The whole point of a foundation is to spread the load out over a large area. Means less pressure so no sinking.
Gravel into soft soil will probably migrate and sink. If you use graded gravel and laid down at least twice as thick as the largest particle you might get away with it because it spreads the load. Geotextile under the gravel will help.

Wood in a foundation is dumb because it will rot.

If you want to go balls out then concrete pad maybe 100mm thick.

How big is this shed? Most 6x4' type just end up with the joists on 4 or 6 concrete blocks to keep the wood dry.
Realistically a shed weighs fuck all.
What do you mean English mud, up in Scotland we have mud because it rains every fucking day.

Thanks for ye' answer.

I still stand by concrete being dumb because if it doesnt sick, it is definately not going to sit flush with the soil on account of erosion. There will be gaps between soil and concrete, not to mention twisting and sinking.

And aye, the wood was a dumb idea..So you suggest a sort of larger-something to stop the small rocks sinking into the soil...
Would those large flat concrete slabs do the trick?

Piers could work. But that is overkill for a shed.

Those blocks could work. Around here we use precast concrete block that also holds the subfloor. (pic related) If it sinks a bit, just lift up the area and put another thin block under it.

A Hudson or equivalent compressed air sprayer so you don't pay out the arse for aerosol cans (you can pressurize them with a hand pump if no air compressor) and some poly squirt bottles are useful kit to spray your spooge of choice.

WD-40 is mostly good for cleaning and very good drilling/cutting/tapping lube for aluminum.

Have some useful recipes for cleaners and penetrants:

to check white leds (just see if they work/glow dimly) they need a forward voltage of ~3V each

see how many are in series (there may be parallel strings of series leds) and multiply by 3 to get the voltage to make them glow

Well, the screen has stopped illuminating but there's audio and some subtle images. That's why I believe that one LED is dead. My idea is to identify the dead one and remove it to close the circuit again.

Pic related.

The strip will drain about 0,6 to 1,2 Ampere per meter depending on how many LEDs it has. Let's say you have a 40 inch TV, thats makes something like 3 meters. At 3 Ampere your average 9V battery (~600mAh) will last 12 minutes until it's dead.

I'm in the process of building a Pigrrl 2 using a kit I bought from Adafruit.

I've already wired most of the components (Speaker, Amp, Powerboost, switch and the pi3 motherboard) together, but am just now realizing that I've been using 26AWG wire for my entire build when I'm "supposed" to be using 30AWG.

Will this affect my build at all? Should I resolder everything with new wiring? Or will it be okay?

Most of the wiring is completed minus the gamepad, I'd love to avoid rewiring everything just for time's sake but also don't want the build to suffer. I'm new to electronics and don't really know what difference the different size wire makes. Case is 3d printed with my Lulzbot mini

30 gauge would have made it more flexible and take up less room in case of a tight fit, but it actually makes no difference in performance.

however, your joints are kinda shitty - look at the reference pic, and compare with yours in the inset. you have like 1/4-inch of exposed wire, just waiting to be pressed against the PCB to cause a short. if it were me, i'd redo every single one, but i wouldnt recommend you redo them coz they'll only get worse.

Hey /diy/, I'm planning on re purposing a big empty adhesive spray can with some fittings so I can pour in whatever I can into the to be sprayed. The only problem is the propellant. I'd rather not use compressed gas into the can, because I've read that pumping a cannister full of air is much more dangerous than using liquid propellant. Can i just use regular butane fuel I get at the gas station for lighters as a propellant, or would that not work?
8 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
You can use butane but the safest bet for DIY use would likely be CO2. CO2 works with low pressure and is non-flammable. You'd really need to tell us what you are going to put in the can if you want a more tailored solution.
>>
>>1208957
Just out of cusiosity, why a glue can? I'd use a brake cleaning fluid can as that shit most definitely will have a clean inside. In the glue can there will be residual glue.

So I want to install a coax outlet in another room of the house. I have a huge roll of it I found in the road one year. I know where the little junction box is in the attic. Is it as simple as running the cable and plugging it into the junction box in the attic and making an outlet in the wall? There's already 2 loose outlets in the house that get basic cable (that's all I'm looking for in the room.) nobody's stealing cable! It's already paid for. Just wanna access it in another room.
24 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
yeah, just need need a 2-way splitter (one input, 2 outputs), the appropriate terminals, and some kinda crimper tool. you can get it either from the attic or the closest other outlet. the longer the wire, the more signal attenuation you get.

if low signal is a problem, remember to install any amplifier at the SOURCE of the signal, not at the destination coz by then the signal is drowning in noise, so you're gonna amplify the noise as well.
>>
>>1208881
watch some cable instal videos on youtube if you care

look and see if there is a coaxial outlet on a wall shared between your intended room and existing cable hookup. if there is you can split that cable and run it to your new outlet without having to go to the attic.

if there is no shared wall with an existing outlet you want to place the new outlet the same height off the ground as other outlets in the room. you dont really have to anchor it off a wall stud (cable installers never do), but if you want to its a cool idea. you want to have the wall outlet anchored to something other than drywall if you want it to be strong

if you want to be safe turn the power off to the whole house when you go to cut your outlet hole because there can possibly be electrical wires underneath

it really is just as simple as connecting it to an empty spot on a coaxial splitter

if you want a really simple install just drill a hole up through your ceiling and plug in. hide the cable in some of that cable management tubing or just let it fly like my dick is now because im not wearing pants
>>
>>1208894
The run is no more then 20 feet I think. That's including it going down the wall to the new outlet location. It's pretty close and the room doubled that doesn't get much if any noise at all. So I think it will be pretty simple process.

I think the two way splitter you're talking about is the thing I referred as a junction box.. But I think mine is a 5 way? With 3 wires already hooked up so that leaves at least 1 output wire that can be hooked up? I'll try to get up there soon to get a picture or serial number off the thing to reference here. It's a little bigger then a hand sized box.

So I just basically cut and crimp an F connector onto the run of coax cable (after feeding it up the wall) and plug it into my "junction box" in the attic and everything will be good? What about if there's two tvs on at the same time. Will we see more noise or it doesn't work that way?

Looking to build a small wood burning pool heater with shit i have laying around. Right now i have a 30 gallon drum, a few heavy duty aluminum oil coolers a submersible pump and lots of shit to build it. The picture is my basic idea, just cut a hole in the top of the drum, mount the aluminum cooler to it, put a door on and start a fire in there, pump water from the pool through the cooler and back into the pool. Nice and simple right? any ideas to make it more efficent? I have unlimited wood and the pool is 8000 gallons. just want a few more degrees. My main concern is should i keep the flames off the cooler by putting a plate in front of it with enough room for the smoke and heat to pass through it?

>>1208853
This would be the cooler, it is heavy duty extruded tube, with extruded tanks. the fins might burn off but with water cooling it i would think the tubes would remain... or like i said put a plate infront of it so the heat and smoke go through but no direct flame.

I doubt the fins would "burn" off if they're Al, but have you thought about putting the cooler inside the barrel? Also consider putting insulation on the outside of the barell, youll be losing most of your heat just through that.

As long as you have piping, I would run some metal tubes through the firebox too. Also your fire will be shit without venting holes and air inlets.

I've got an urgent matter guys. I will be attending on some type of masquerade three weeks later and I'm gonna need a decent looking silk robe but I don't wanna be look like a Chinese noble man, who do fuck would've ever want that? If you are going to use silk and have no previous experience is sewing clothing, then find a tailor because you are going to fuck it up. Silk is delicate and expensive. You don't want to use it just to learn the foundations of the trade.

Hey /diy, my grandma gave me this old lamp for my dorm and I want to fix it up a bit, maybe even make it into a floor lamp changing the tube for something larger. Any recommendations? I also want to replace the hook as it seems to be very fragile and prone to break but getting such a specific piece might be hard. Any ideas on how to replace that mechanism?

I don't see the hook. Please draw a red arrow pointing to it, or describe where it is.

Sorry if I'm being retarded.

Yeah I realize maybe the image is not very clear, here's another photo from above. The cool thing about the hook is that you can set the height of the lamp by clamping it anywhere on the tube

>>
What brand / model of strip are you using?
>>
You first need to figure out how much light you need. Accent lighting or you want to actually be able to see something? Depending on that you pick the type of led strip and the density of chips, which dictates your total wattage.

Beyond that, read up on basic electronics, understand U=R*I and P=U*I. Then once you know you want, for example, a 10W LED strip, you can calculate how many amper-hours you need from your battery (10Ah at 12V).
