hey /diy/,
what kind of support structure would you make for pic related?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Very short stud walls of 75x35mm framing pine at 500 centres for the big bit in the middle, 16mm melamine faced board for the drawer areas, top with 19mm thick sheet flooring (called yellowtongue here). I'm also assuming you'd be attaching the free ends to a wall with a ledger or similar.
>>
>>1205916
thanks. left wall is concrete, and i want to avoid being miserable and trying to drill and attach anything to that wall. just construction wood supports. i'm looking at how decks and patios are built now so i think i'll go that route?
>>
>>1206207
If you're not attaching it, just add an extra stud wall on the edge(s) to provide the necessary support.

I'd steer away from trying to do it strictly deck style, as that means bearers, which means, at a guess, something like 140x45 for an 1870 span, which may be a more expensive way to go than just simple framing timber and short stud frames - generally nothing beats a load path straight to the ground for cheapness. (If it was me building that, I'd use downgrade studs that I can pick up for $2/2400mm).

Figure out what you want to use as a floor material first, see what its support requirements are, and work down from there. (ie if the sheet width is 1000, and it needs supporting at 500 centres, then you know where the supporting frames need to go.)

You may also need to support it over the drawers with a bit of 70x35 on edge depending on what/how the drawers are built.

A buddy of mine moved into a house where a couple geezers used to live before they got recommended to the spirit in the sky. There was an old tube radio/phonograph combo in the garage that he said I could have. The entire enclosure is absolutely trashed to the point beyond saving. Basically the only things that survived were the actual mechanics, electronics, and (miraculously) the schematic label on the bottom of the casing.

Considering that the enclosure was fucked, I removed all of the electromech and decided that I'll use this unit as a free tube amp. I'm of course about to replace all of the paper capacitors, but I do have one question:

What the fuck is the attached picture?

Is it R3 in the schematic? The H pins (I'm guessing "H" is heater) on all of the sockets in the schematic are not connected to anything, but I'm guessing that bullshit hanging off R3 is the heater leads on all the other sockets; this is what I've gathered from looking at how all the other sockets are wired. I'm also guessing that the resistor comes after mains on the 35Z5 socket because the 35Z5 is a rectifier tube meant to operate at mains voltage.

If it's R3, it's an easy fix. If it's not R3, then what is it?

>>

Yes it is R3

But for the love of god, just trash the thing. it is of the type that the chassis is LIVE (AC on the chassis and your guitar connected to the hot side of mains). These were safe only inside the insulated enclosure.

If you're thinking fires were less common back in the day, that's not true. Fires were simply not reported as often - because, with these instruments, fire was a natural part of life.

Hello diy, I'm looking for a spring with about 2 meters of travel, about the diameter of my arm, and that can handle as much weight as possible for a bit of a project of mine, are springs like these sold on the market or would I have to make it, and if so, how do I make something like that, I'd imagine it would be pretty damn hard

And by a lot of weight, I mean multiple tens of tons would be a good thing, as strong as possible for that kind of spring

And sorry if I sound retarded, its because I am

>>
>>1204386
You need a compression spring, or a tension spring? Garage door springs are about the right size for tension springs, but multiple tens of tons? Yeah, one spring the size of your arm with 2 meters of travel isn't going to give you that, no matter what kind of spring it is.
>>
>>1204395
I dont need multiple tons, I want multiple tons, really I just want as much as possible and then I can work with that, I need a compression spring, for maximum release of force
>>

What the shit are you trying to do with it?

Gentlemen,

I apologize if this is a bad post.

However my question is as follows:

You can use high pressure water to cut objects, why wouldn't you use steam?

Pro/Con?

What do you think steam is?
>>
con: it's hot so it'll deform many materials
con: making a steam pump is much harder than a water pump
con: you need a big fucking boiler to continually turn water into steam

I'd like to set up a homestead for my wife, our kids with the addition of a couple of cabins for our parents in the future. I have several friends in the construction business and they've all given me wonderful advice, but I'd like the opinion of strangers as well.

I have 40 acres of land near family now. I'm clearing a road on the property as well as a home site and a site for septic(About $5k in all according to the company doing the work). After that water and power will cost about $1k total. The master house my wife and I will live in will have the main kitchen/storage, while the cabins will only effectively be studios with a living space. I have a few building companies lined up for the master house, as it'll require a basement for root storage and storm safety.

What am I missing? What is absolutely retarded about this plan?

Make sure your parents and kids want to live there.
Don't be an childish cunt if kids want to move somewhere at some point. They'll just hate you even more if you start bitchin'.

The cabins need kitchen etc too. You want them to be able to do their own thing.

That way if and when family are not there you could rent them.

You'd be ahead to build a shop first to facilitate everything else. I'd have a power pole placed with 120 and 240v outdoor outlets as I did for my shop, then you have power to build your workshop.

Have many cleanouts on the pipe run to your septic. If you never need them they didn't cost much. If you do, you'll have it easy. I glued my cleanout tees to the pipes on only one side so if I ever have to I can easily remove the whole line. It's been twenty years with no problems but forethought is free.

Study hard. Be superbly equipped because tools are cheap compared to what they do for you. A forty foot High Cube shipping container is an instant storm proof storage area and workshop. I have two joined as my welding and machine shop area. You can paint them attractively or use camo to make them vanish. Pic is my 20' storage container.

I want to put a red or amber color filter on my screen to reduce red light at night.
I already have f.lux, but I want a real, physical protection, not just a meme software.

I thought about gluing velcro to my monitor and glue the other part of the velcro to the amber plastic sheet so I can put and remove the filter at will.

Is there a better way? If I do it like I said, what glue should I use that I can easily remove from the monitor's frame?

Install it yourself.

We get these threads every damn summer of retards asking how to generate cold air for cheap. The cheapest and most efficient way happens to be an air conditioner.

But by all means, freeze a bunch of water bottles and place them in front of a box fan. Also completely insulate your room because the hot air will flood right back in.

Hi guys. I recently went the chinkshit route when helping my dad buy a new phone due to his budget. Ended up getting him an Elephone S7 Mini from Gearbest ( http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_491517.html?wid=11 ). Turns out it's a really nice phone. Problem is, pop-up ads seem to be appearing everywhere. When unlocking the phone, opening apps. Ads just randomly pop up. Seems like they're baked into the software.

Read somewhere online that the ads are a part of the launcher. Tried disabling this launcher and using a 3rd party one but ads keep appearing. Whenever an Ad downloads and appears on the phone, it appears to be saving data to the launcher app. This data continues to accumulate under the 'Launcher3' app data until it reaches 30gb and the device storage is full.

Any ideas or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Willing to pay a reward in Bitcoin. Sucks trying to help my dad out and instead I just fucked up.

Root, disable app. If no root available, find an app to freeze the launcher. DESU, it probably is a different app that does that. I'll Google some shit and see what I can find.
>>
>>1204811
Here fag.
1º- Install Nova Launcher (I tried with this one, maybe other ones also works)
2º- Set as default, keeping press the button, select always Nova.
3º- Go to settings - apps - show system apps
4º- Search for Launcher 3 and force stop
5º- In the same screen go to Permissions and disable all
6º- Go back and in Storage, clear data and clear cache
7º- Go to main screen of apps and tap in the gear
8º- Go to Modify system settings
9º- Up in the right corner tap the three points and show system
10º- Search Launcher 3 and disable "Allow modify system settings"
11º- Go back and go to "Draw over others apps"
12º- Up in the right corner tap the three points and show system
13º- Search Launcher 3 and disable "Permit drawing over other apps"

I did find something similar but it didn't have all the steps your guide had. Thank you very very much. Ads seem to have completely disappeared and phone isn't filling up anymore. Love you.

OK, /diy/ Let me begin by saying that I am not a sperg or autist. Now that that's out of the way; I'm considering building a bullet resistant Lexan sheild. Most of the designs I've seen show a large sheet of concave Lexan, .250" or less. If I were to build one with a sharp right angle rather than a gentle curve wouldn't the bullets be more likely to deflect rather than penetrate?

No. Because if the shield were shot more perpendicular to that face, the bullet would transfer more energy into the shield.
You want to minimize the area which exposes a full face of flat steel to that target. that's how deflection works.

You're thinking of tank sloped armor, which actually works by increasing the thickness of that steel relative to the height angle of the projectile. It's a completely different concept.

You're worried about small arms and not tank shells. You will want to go with a concave design.

For that matter, it's worth noting that during the days of gunpowder, most shields shrunk in size or were dropped entirely. Bucklers stayed in vogue for a very long time because of their relative usefulness.

Also, most shields were not bulletproof. But there were some African tribes that had bulletproof Rhino hide shields.

This is an example of what you will want. You still see the defined ridge, however it still mainly works by virtue of being round.
I also don't have any good pictures of shields and bucklers. Bear with me.
>>
>>1200680
Okay buddy, the reason why it has a gentle curve is to give it a greater surface area from which to deflect bullets. If you were to go with a sharp right angle (like you're suggesting), any bullet coming from 45 degrees to you will penetrate the shield as it is striking a flat surface rather than a rounded surface. This is the concept behind angled plating on tanks.

Not sure if this is the right board, but I'm having a mouse problem at my house. Was wondering if you guys had any tips, or methods on how to get them out the house?

Just in a week we caught 15 of them in glue traps. But I still see them here and there.

Or just get an exterminator ?

15!?! Do you live on a farm or something? If not sounds like there is a massive breeding ground someone in/under/near your house.

Keep using the glue traps, seal up all plumbing openings under kitchen/bathroom sinks with steel wool, and if it comes down to it get yourself a couple of cats.
>>
>>1191849
>Just in a week we caught 15 of them in glue traps.
the mice aren't the problem, the problem is you are a fucking retard.

15 mice didn't just accidentally get lost in your house on the way to some fucking mouse convention, they are in your house because 1) you are probably a tinky cunt who leaves all crumbs and old food and shit lying around and never cleans up after themselves which is what attracts the mice in the first place and 2) you have an abode which is poorly built and is full of holes that mice can enter by.

so lets see, you put down glue traps which are absolutely not humane so we know you have some sociopathic issues but lets put that to one side for a moment and check which of the two problems above putting down glue traps will fix:

1) you being a dirty filthy tinky cunt?
no, unelss you stick one over your mouth until you die it won't help that.
2) the holes by which the mice are entering?
no, unless you are gluing the traps over all the holes in your house it won't stop them getting in.

so here is the solution i guess:

1) keep your house clean. stop leaving old food and crumbs for mice to eat. give your house a proper clean and then keep it clean.

2) fill in all the holes that mice get through. a mouse can get through a hole the size of a pencil. if you can drop a pencil down a hole then a mouse can get through. lift your carpets i guess and have a look for holes and gaps of this size. fill them with wire wool, mice won't chew through wire wool unlike literally anything else.
if you didn't bother with step 1 they will want to get in and will chew through like wood or brick or concrete if its thin enough.

so yeah thats basically it. if you do these two things you won't need traps because mice won't 1) want in 2) be able to get in.

call an exterminator if you want to pay someone to keep coming back to your house to remove all of the mice that have died in the traps he set without actually solving the problem as discussed above.
>>
Bait, bait and more bait. Peanut butter mixed with crumbled bait sticks to mouse traps but if the trap doesn't get them, they still die. Cheap Chinese bait buckets via Ebay does the job.

Kill, kill, kill. I do. Replenish bait forever until it's nibbled no more, and leave it available.

I have a question tho: I've noticed that the dye on a lot of my well-used projects wears off after awhile. What can be used to seal in a color? Al I could think of using would be the super sheen stuff from Tandy, and I figured out that neatsfoot oil doesn't really work
