I'd like to do something special for my father. I have his original dog tags with the double ball chain that was issued in boot camp. Can aluminum be plated with precious metals? How is this done and who would do this for me ~ such a small consignment and all?

Hi /diy/

DIY retard here, bought an mdf desk from a thrift shop a few months ago, gf wanted it painted to match the room, painted it with bathroom paint by mistake, said fuck it and left it but now it's chipping and the paint is peeling and I want to paint it properly now.

Problem is I've no idea what to with it now, afraid of making a mistake? Should I sand the paint off, prime it and use an acrylic or polyacrylic for durability?

Side note, the desk originally had a laminate sort of finish on and being the lazy bastard I am I just painted right over it instead of sanding it down. How badly have I fucked this desk?

Hey /diy/ I've tried googling this but no success so far: My house AC compressor lines are covered in white frost, and I'm trying to diagnose the issue before resorting to calling some jackass to service it. Also, when I set my thermostat to system = off, fan = auto (there's no "off" for the fan), the fan continues to run and is blowing cold air through the ducts.

Any ideas/pointers/tips? pic related but it's not a pic of mine.

Your system is low on refrigerant.

You can't fix it yourself, it's against the law.

If you could fix it yourself, you wouldn't ask here.

Ok, you can't buy the refrigerant needed without a license which you don't have and can't get. Also, that's a pretty good law as laws go because you have no idea what to even ask here, so.....

Hello /diy/. Currently I'm writing up plans to make a wooden dance pad so I can play Stepmania and get back in shape since hard/metal dance pads are hard to come by these days. I was hoping I could get some help in choosing a PCB.

I've made a custom control box for another old dance pad out of an original PS1 controller before, so I have okay knowledge of what needs to be done. However I'm not quite sure which PCB I should go for. I want something that's easy to work with and has a USB output so I can just hook it directly into my PC. I've heard Arduino boards would be good for this, but I've never used one before or even know what type would be the best option. Plus, they're relatively expensive and I'd like to get away with a cheaper board if I could. A crappy USB game controller off amazon I could rip the PCB board out of that would be easy to work with would be ideal.

What kind of cheap, easy to work with boards/game controllers would you recommend?

Do you guys know how those weight packing machines work?

I know that digital scales use load cells based on ohmic resistance, but i have not found a load cell that works with small loads. I want to create a machine that is controlled by an arduino and has to measure weights about 10g to 100g.

I want to pack potato chips on a home built machine. It does not have to heat seal the packaging, I just want to automatize a process that is hand made using a food scale.

Something like the related pic.

in the old days you'd use 2 identical cameras and wire the shutter buttons together, or you'd use one camera and a slider to take a second shot from a few inches away. today you just buy a 3D camera.

you should be asking /p/ for this but as a resident from there, i can tell you the most you'd get is "3d gimmic gtfo"

Stereography is as simple as taking a photograph and introducing parallax in the second.
That's the technical term for when things move at different rates in a picture depending on the distance to the camera.

You have several ways to do this:
1. Have one camera, move the camera for a second shot.
2. Have one camera, split the image in two with mirrors.
3. Have two cameras, have them take images simultaneously.

The advantage of the first is that it's extremely cheap.
You don't actually require anything except photoshop for this.
Take a picture, hand hold the camera a few inches away but facing the same direction and take a second picture.
Then auto-align the two in photoshop and put them side to side and voila.
The second one, is as cheap as buying 2 or 4 mirrors but is harder simply on the basis that you'll need to actually make some sort of rig - miniature or not.
You're basically making one or two periscopes and assuring the camera sees into both at the same time.
Then it's as simple as realigning the images correctly.

And the 3rd on is simply using two cameras instead of splitting the image.
This is is generally used for acutal production cameras as it introduces almost no problems.
I was going to sketch the mirror thing but apparently someone already even made smartphone adapters using that technique.
Just watch this and google "3d camera mirrors" and you'll get all the info you need.

With the cordless version you just grab it and get to work.
You don't have to worry about having enough gas/oil, or going through a checklist to get it going.
The downside is battery life I guess.

Alright, I need alternatives for Shapeways that print gold. They just changed their pricing structure for cast metals, and now the "minimum price" completely screws up everything. Now, for a lot of my models, I have to pay a $15-25 extra fee for "minimum pricing", and the price for some of my other models has fallen maybe 15 cents. I really feel the community got shafted here, but whatever.

tl;dr who 3D prints gold OTHER THAN Shapeways and i.materialise and ships to the US/internationally?

Who gives a shit what your name is faggot?

>I won't be creating my own parts
You will eventually at least rig some random connectors up or drill holes in things, I can assure you
>I havn't choosen a certain brand to stick to
Don't bother, frakencycles are a common biker hobby creation
>color sceen is as follows red brown black or a darker themed // or I want a playfull theme
You will be painting parts. Painting motorcycles is fairly easy. Don't need to spend too much money on this part either, rattlecans can get the job done nicely if you use a good base and clear and prep the parts.

I assume you have motorcycle experience and the accompanying repair experience, and know some shit about engines and all? Try to find a motorcycle boneyard/junkyard where you can shoot the shit with old timer bikers and grab random parts to cobble together. Hell, most boneyard owners churn out really nice frakencycles and custom work in their free time because they've got thousands of old motorcycles to salvage from and they enjoy it. They will give you advice if you're not a faggot. Unless you're planning on spending indordinate fucktons of money, you're going to want salvage parts for basically all of it, so the boneyard and Craigslist postings are where you're gonna find a frame you can work with. You may want to start picking up random broken cheap bikes for parts; you can make a lot of different engines work in different frames if you're crafty (and as mentioned, rig up connectors/mounts somehow).

I've seen a lot of frakenbikes, both the ones with a coherent aesthetic and the ones that keep the "every part is from a different bike" look. The unifying factor is general mechanic/gearhead ability, creativity in attaching shit, and a lot of effort in finding parts.
>>
Go to real motorcycle forums. This is not one of those. /diy/ is and will remain utterly shitty for that purpose. If you are interested in custom building a retro style motorcycle, go learn about them there. Not here. You'll thank me later.

Using tiny Jap bikes to badly fail to mimic real vintage motorcycles nearly always comes out looking like ass. OTOH you could pull off a decent job with a vertical single like a Suzuki Savage, or a vertical twin like the excellent Yamaha 650.

Go to Chop Cult and Jockey Journal for starters and get a genuine idea of how to get classic lines.

The classic British vertical single still in production is the Royal Enfield. It's factory moved to India many years ago and it's successful because the design is easily maintainable.

Your picture is a Harley Sportster, with a solid mount Evolution engine. They are excellent motorcycles and easy to find in good shape for modest prices. No other motorcycle aftermarket parts support comes remotely close to that for Harleys and they are a solid machine for daily riding.

The xlforum is the canonical Sportster forum.

Now leave this shithole and go learn about how to do a GOOD job building a custom motorcycle. There are many larger Jap machines which are cheap, reliable, more powerful than the sad tiny shitbikes used to make aborted customs, and if you choose one of those you can end up with something worth riding.

Do not reply ITT. Go where I mention above. Those forums are noob friendly.

If you want to plate your machine to ride it on the street, GET A BIKE WITH A CLEAR TITLE then IMMEDIATELY transfer the title to get it in the system under your name, and when you do, get yourself a printed copy of that title ON THE SPOT. Stash with your important documents.

You'll thank me later. If you study thoroughly you can get a result you'll be proud of.
>>
>>1201870
Boneyard parts are often overpriced, but Ebay is fucking beautiful because you have so much more to work with.

Unless they are free, grabbing random bikes for parts is inefficient.

Engine transplants etc are usually a terrible idea and the results look like it.

Smart method is find a machine you don't have to do drastic surgery on to get what you want.

Building small motorcycles takes as much effort as doing larger displacement machines.

Jap forum on Chop Cult:
http://www.chopcult.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=9&s=26f00f1867e142365fd014d418533d6c

Once you've found a machine with a clear title (fucking ignore anything that doesn't have one, and KNOW your state DMV rules by READING them) you have something to start with.

Buy a runner or one that passes a compression test. Compression testers are cheap and every mechanic needs one. You'll learn how to clean carbs and fuel systems. See forums for info.

Everything you want to do, someone else has already done. Information is power. Don't randomly do shit while learning. Copy success.

Get a service manual for whatever bike you choose and study that motherfucker.

You can really streamline your process by learning from others and the internet is outstanding for that.

Long story short
>Had damp
>front garden had been filled in with soil and stone top.Was covering half the airbrick.
>now I've dug it all away so no more damp soil touching wall.

I don't have the time or money to dig the whole front garden out.Remove all the soil and build in some drainage for it.

Someone told me to just throw a load of pebbles where the trench is now.
I'm thinking doing this with also some sort of plastic barrier between that and the stones to protect the wall from damp.
