Quick explanation: my a/c is having issues keeping the house cool on really hot days so I pulled a window unit out and intended to install it but within 20 seconds of powering it on it died. The gfci plug works fine and illuminates. The next connection is a capacitor cbb65a-1. I cannot get it to arc or put off any voltage. I'm a new fag when it comes to electronic repairs. Is this capacitor my issue or am I wrong? If it is my issue where can I buy a good replacement? (Link)

In Florida start capacitors go out quite often. On my outside unit I can test to see if the start cap is bad by spinning the fan when the system inside is running. Don't know how you could do that.
You could let it charge for a bit then hook up a multi meter to see if it's getting you voltage when disconnected. If it's not slowly putting out voltage when disconnected from power then it is probably dead.
>>1205721
This unit was I'm storage for over a year in a hot shed. I've tried letting it charge but nothing gets power and the cap is the first thing after the plug. The cap doesn't look deformed but I can't read any voltage across any leads. My biggest question is do the specifications on the replacement need to match exactly or is there any wiggle room? If it needs to be exact could you suggest where to get that replacement? I'm lost in the technical language.
>>1205736
You can go up in voltage no problem. Stay within 5% of the capacitance.
How would one go about making this? Plastidip and a template? Does this guy have the right to demand such a high price?

Here are some other products

Probably a decal on a spray painted gameboy. You need a $1000 printer that needs special maintenance and ink to make custom decals so I'd say he can charge whatever he wants unless you want to invest in one yourself.

Mine was simpler than yours - no decal, just a color change. The yellow one was once blue but I had it painted so it would match the color scheme. Gave the blue to my brother and yellow to my sister for Christmas one year, and I played red. Good times!
Anyway, I unscrewed all the screws and organized them on a sheet of paper so I would know where they went once I was ready to re-assemble. The casing comes apart somewhat easily, but you may have some trouble with the wire(s) in the hinge. Then take the casing and spray paint it your desired color - you'll probably need to apply multiple coats to completely cover the old color. As for the decal, I'd just get a high-quality metal or foil sticker and epoxy it to the casing - cheap and effective.
Gonna build a loft for my elementary school students. Since there will potentially be several 9-10yo kids on it at once with others underneath, I want to make it invulnerable.
What wood(s) do you think I should use? I'd prefer something that can readily be found in US lumber yards, and cheaper is better.

Contact the insurance company too. They should have specific regulations for that sort of thing which will help you design it.
>>1205130
The school's insurance company? I feel like they'll just tell me to fuck off and not build it at all for safety reasons.
>>1205131
The point is to make it safe. If you build it to be safe then they won't have a problem and no one will get hurt around it. The alternative is that you do this half assed, get a kid hurt, and lose your job.
I just spent $100+ for equipment and parts to fix the AC system in my car. (Manifold gauges, vacuum pump, and a reman compressor) What else can I use the tools for so they aren't just sitting in my tool box?
Future AC repairs. They've already paid for themselves. Mine certainly did. Be glad you were smart enough to buy them.
You could make a vacuform table (Google the term) for modelling if want, and there's always the penis pump option.

I have a vacuum forming table already that uses a shop vac, but yea, maybe.
I often have situations that rely too much on dexterity like this: a bolt needs to be taken out, but i need to hold the machine in place or it will turn with the bolt, AND the nut needs to be held fixed separately so it comes off the bolt.
Circuit boards have "helping hands" which helps a lot with soldering. Is there an equivalent tool for machining?
>>1204961
vice/vise
in reality a set of helping hands is as much use in machining as in soldering.
i.e. none.
>>1204965
>in reality a set of helping hands is as much use in machining as in soldering.
Have you never soldered before or are you just a moron? You can't hold multiple objects at different angles in a single vice, and you can't use multiple vices easily
>>1204971
i have never successfully used a set of helping hands. i find proper pcb holder can be useful but with a little dexterity practice you can hold a board and component while feeding solder with one hand and iron in the other, certainly don't need mr wobbly shite over there.
mechanical is much easier, you clamp whatever you are working on, bolt in one hand nut in the other. couldn't be any simpler?
I'd ask the following question on /o/ as it is car related, but the board is mostly just shitposting, with no useful help.
When I press my brakes, my steering wheel pulls left a few degrees, and the car vibrates a bit. There's also a subtlewhirring sound from the front left wheel. It's been doing this for over a year, and I want to fix it as it's now my DD. Here's a list of things I've tried:
>replaced both the front wheel bearings 10 months ago, can't remember if it was better or worse after this as I wasn't driving it much.
>had a front wheel alignment a month ago, very noticeable improvement
>installed new brake pads/rotors/flush brake fluid last week, no noticeable effect
>swapped my wheels with another set today to make sure it wasn't unbalanced wheels. The set I installed are 17", I was running 15". They're a lot heavier, and make the vibration noticeably worse, and the whirring sound is different.
I'm under the impression that it could still be the front left wheel bearing (I installed them myself), and I can go exchange it. I have searched Google, but most people think it's everything I've already tested, and I don't have money to be throwing around. It's a 1995 Miata, non ABS, rear wheel drive.
What do?
Also to clarify, I replaced the front wheel bearings because the left one was making a sound when turning. That sound was fixed by replacing the bearings, but I think the new one might have failed prematurely.
>>1204947
>but the board is mostly just shitposting
haahha and /diy isnt?
anyway, could the left caliper (or right for that matter) be messed up?
messed up CV joint?
>>1204951
Well I hope neither caliper is busted. Outside of the bleeding nipples *snickers* being slightly rounded, they both function, and I greased the guide pins when I did the brake pads/rotors.
It's rear wheer drive, no CV joints up front.
How about an Ikea hacks thread? Show me your best h4x
>>1204724
My best hack was buying an old table saw and drill press, restoring them, and making my own damn furniture out of actual wood.
>>1204746
Heh
OP I'm not sure what this is about? If you can take Ikea furniture and cut it up and reassemble it, isn't it just one more step to make it yourself? Or is the hack just combining Ikea items in unusual ways? Not trying to be a dick.
>>1204749
Not op, but Ikea hacks is usually something like combining 6 end tables and two coffee tables and some plywood to make a bed. So you end up spending three times as much for some shit tier product, but all the stay at home moms love to re pin it on pinterest to feel better about them self.
What's the best website to order electrical components (PCBs.. etc) from? I live in Europe so preferably a European site so I don't have to pay the import tax and extra for postage
>>1204474
>the best website
If there was a single 'best' webshop, no others would exist.
There's ali, ebay, amazon, mouser, digikey, conrad..
>PCBs.. etc
Raw material for etching pcbs on your own?
>>1204491
Digikey has some interesting components, is it any good?
>>1204504
Dunno? What do you need? You are basically asking us to tell you which shop is best, but you don't seem to have any clue what you're after. Try this, it works for 99% of us..
> design project
> work out bill of materials
> see which website sells the components you need
> ???
> stop making shit threads about things you can work out for yourself.
Can a grounding rod be installed under an accessible porch like this?
just use neutral for ground
>>1204136
If it's one of those six foot long rods you drive in with a sledge hammer it would be better to put it just outside the porch in a place where nobody is likely to trip over it and where it won't detract from the visual appeal of your house.
Surely, but why put a trip hazard in a primo rape-dungeon patio location?
Hey /diy/ about to start working on a kevlar armour outfit that semi-matches knight armour for a trek i'll be going on.
Any tips on what I should look out for when making it?
>>1203639
Visiting Detroit OP?
>>1203639
Considering that kevlar isn't a solid material like steel, I don't recommend making your armor as if it was a solid piece of metal. Assuming that you're not just making a vest, give the kevlar lots of room to stretch and move, so it'll work as intended.
Is carbon paper for the transfer of a tattoo stencil safe? Of what does the ink on the carbon paper consist of? Because it will inevitably go in as you prick your skin, so I want to know
I am preparing to do a diy tattoo on myself.
.....it's CARBON
if you're this stupid, should you really be sticking yourself with needles?

not sure it is carbon used in carbon paper
but carbon is pretty save, even edible
Recommend a vlogger that makes stuff with electronics.
I want to watch a story, not an instructional video.

Guy's a fucking idiot
guy actually got his door-lined niggerbox aka tinderbox aka sweatbox on the front page of reddit. what have you done lately that's worth half a fuck?
My past 4 months:
Art exhibit using overhead projectors.
Art residency in NY where I built a new type of video synthesizer.
Went to Moogfest and 1st place in the circuit bending challenge.
Got evicted and found a new place the same day in a city with zero vacancies.
Maker Faire.
Bike Rave
Was in a documentary.
Was invited to show off my inventions at this pretty big and important science center.
Moved (All with a bike trailer)
Girlfriend moved in with me.
Also I have a 50 hour a week day job where I got a raise and bonus.
>>1203257
Also I got an art grant to build a huge LED wall and take it to a music fest that's happening in 10 days and a couple other art shows.
I have a 6.5 quart stainless steel pot from which I want to make soap from. How much oil can I put in to use most of the space for the pot?
I'm thinking of throwing in some rosemary, because I've got a large plant that I never use.
Also, how do you feel about a composition of:
50% canola oil
30% coconut oil
20% olive oil
GUTS
Did all the soapmakers die?
>>1203587
Yes. We killed them at Nuremburg.
I posted a month or so ago about buying a dirt cheap longboard then making it real nice, you annons seemed to like the idea so here's the results of my work (picture is what it looked like before, cheap used longboard for 20$ on eBay with plastic trucks and abec 1 wheels, free shipping, had the same graphic on the bottom it has on top)
Sanded the fuck out of it
