Your outlet is upside down. Flip that sucker the right way up and it should fix the problem. It is also probably what is causing your pictures to post upsidedown also.

Get out your owners manual and set it to the highest power level... or go to walmart and buy a new one for $60.

I already have a sewing machine and am getting pretty good at making some basic items like little blankets and pillows im just not sure how to make a dress

I already have a lot of the basic skills i need i think
layering fabric, Straight Seams, buttons , most of the stuff I've made so far has been simple squares what i really need help with is turning the design into a temple

pic related its the basic idea i had for the dress, 2.5 billion hours in MS paint

her birthday is August 19th so i need to have it made by the 18th so i can drive it down to her and surprise her, do you cool dudes think you can help me out? i've looked online a bit already but im not sure what to search for exactly

hey /diy!

I'm looking for a simple/effective way to make use of the space in pic related.

I just moved and have 2 more servers that go into that rack. It averages at about 80 - 85 degress (sunny FL days).

I'd like some input on how to organize my area, pic related shows the walls existing in black and the proposed area I'd build to dampen server noise, and push heat exhaust out the sliding door opening with the sliding door locking into the wall for security. A/C drain and power will come out of there.

I have an electrician coming to hook up a pair of dedicated circuits as I have a generator in the garage I'd like to fail over to. Currently the room is on a single 15 Amp circuit. May upgrade it to 20Amp too.

I'll attach other pics in the thread.

Questions:
1. Ideas?
2. Can I plug a 20 Amp breaker into an 15 AMP breaker on a less-than-10 year old building or do I still need to get an electrician to test wire load?
3. Outside the sliding door on the right is my A/C condenser on a dedicated circuit. Could I hook my sinewave UPS into that circuit to minimize costs on 2 dedicated circuits?

The rack will likely be here for about a year.

Thanks!

I'm going to buy my first house in the next few months.

Besides a home inspection, What else should I look out for myself?

Also are "stigmatized properties" a terrible idea to buy?

I am not looking for an investment, Just a place to live out the rest of my life.

My only concern is blood/blood born pathogens from not being cleaned correctly or at all

>Besides a home inspection, What else should I look out for myself?

High interest rate or prime/adjustable rates on your mortgage.
>>
>>1209314
Good advice. Get a mortgage with a fixed rate, low interest, no early repayment fee, and put down enough of a down payment so you don't have to pay PMI.

Make at least 1 extra payment worth a year, either as a full extra payment or as a little bit tacked on to each payment throughout the year. That will shave 5 years off a 30-year mortgage.

>My only concern is blood/blood borne pathogens from not being cleaned correctly or at all
Sounds like you have a thing with germs. Don't buy a place with carpet if you can help it. Carpet is nasty unless the people that owned it previously were super clean freaks. Have the house cleaned professionally before you move in. Maybe even painted.
>>
>>1209313
The bank is going to require a home inspection anyway.

The biggest things I look for are:

- How much useful life is left in the roof
- Age of HVAC unit
- Is the neighborhood trending up or down (in 15 years will it still be a safe neighborhood)
- Foot traffic in the area, drive by at different times of the day and different days of the week to see what foot traffic and neighborhood demographics are.

More generally, you need to find out where you local market is in its cycle. Trulia has a "Local Scoop" section that has a real estate market overview, which lists historical pricing trends. It's impossible to predict future prices, but you can estimate where you market is in the cycle.

It's equally important to do an individualized assessment of each neighborhood you intend to buy in. You can go on Zillow and see what houses in the area have been selling for 10 years ago, 5 years ago, and recently.

Thinking of replacing alternator on jeep 4.0. suv from late 90s. is at 198k miles and begin doing odd power surges when a/c is turned on. Car runs good but when I turn on ac or radio will surge or flicker but stay on. I took battery cables off and it runs fine but does it after a trip of 20 miles. Any feedback? Or is it a connection?

>>
>>1208825
You have no idea what's going on do you? At least read the fucking voltage man, if you get 14.something from your alternator it's fine. If it only happens with one thing, well wouldnt you suspect that one thing? I'd bet your engine also bogs when you turn the A/C on right?
>>
Go to Jeep forums and Pirate 4x4.

This is neither. Ensure you have a service manual for reference.
>>
Your A/C compressor is locking up which slows the belt down and messes with the alternator.

Well first you need to buy a turbine and compressor from some korean company, the rest is just relatively minor machining. Unless you have a five axis CNC machine that can work with inconel, you won't be making the turbine and compressor. Everything else will have shit performance and/or be hand grenade.

You could do pulsejets and ramjets though.

Unfortunately, it's probably cheaper just to buy an RC jet engine

Do you think its possible to sustain a no-kill goat milk dairy on 10 acres of land?
26 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1208655
Of course, though if you have freezing winter with snow then you may need to supplement with some extra food. Of course it depends on what type of land and plants you have. For instance, goats don't generally eat grass. They eat that after they've eaten everything else.
>>
I worked goat dairy for 3 years, ill tell you this now cows are a fuck ton easier. Goats are cunts, good fucking luck milking them off a herringbone, unless youre willing to drop some mad cash on a rotary shed and some too tier fencing then I suggest you go with cows.

Found an expired extinguisher from 08 and was wondering what would be the best way to empty it for /diy/ purposes. Other than just spraying it into a trashcan then drilling a small hole near the neck to make sure its completely empty, is there anything I show know before proceeding? As in is the foam considered "pollution"? Just a quick question.

The fire extinguisher is a chemical based one, according to some sources they should be avoided since they are poisonious in nature. Can I just rinse it out with regular soap?

Bump. Cool Idea OP, I can't help but what kind of music will you play?
>>
>>1208368
Classic rock, classic metal, blues, early thrash, some non commie punk. Whatever I really felt like
>>
>>1208370
Sweet, sounds like my taste in music more or less, that's what I'd play if I made a station at least. I just looked a bit more into it though, and unless I misunderstood what I read, it sounds like it's rare to hear pirate radio stations unless you're actively trying to, and even then it's hard. Again I know very little on the topic but do you at least have a chance at an audience?

I need help setting up my cable. Recently someone came and "fixed" my internet but all he did was take out the old stuff. I used to get a few channels by just connecting my TV directly to the cable but now I only get one channel and a message saying scrambled channel in the rest.

do you subscribe to only internet from the cable company? they encrypted the local channels so you need to subscribe to a cable package and/or get a box from the company

I don't but I have a charge of $0.99 on my bill labeled "TV"

I figure those were the few channels I was able to see.

How does one determine if there is asbestos in a project they are working on? I really need some advice here, so if you see this and know anything about this I would appreciate some advice.

My parents asked me to pull up the carpet in our dining room, since we know that there is nice hardwood underneath. The carpet has been ruined by our dog over the last 10 years and it needs to go.

I started pulling it up and it dawned on me that there might be asbestos in the carpet or the padding. I don't know how old the carpet is. The house was built in 1969 and the hardwood floor is presumably original, but the carpet isn't as old. I would guess it could be as new as 2000 or as old as the 80s.
So now I have a half pulled-up carpet right by the front door. I don't know if I should get anything tested or how I would even go about doing that. If there is asbestos, then it has presumably already been released into the air. If there isn't then I should just grab a shop vac and finish the job now. Wat do?

What's the best soldering iron?
31 posts and 7 images submitted.

every fucking noob wants ''the best'' in everything. how about settling for adequate? coz the best soldering iron costs more than you make in a month. Weller WP25 is more than adequate for 99% of users.
>>
>>1207911
That's a fucking brazing iron you idgit.
>>
>>1207931

Thanks. I need to replace my radio shack piece of shit. Why do people use adjustable soldering irons? Amazon has one for $22 that goes from 300 to 840 degrees. At that price I assume it's poor quality, but if I buy a decent one, what would be the rationale?

What are the most economical DIY things. This means it saves a consumer the most amount of money with the expertise/labor factored in. This can be anything from making a sofa, to cabinets, or just repair/sewing clothes.

What DIY projects save the average American the most amount of money when you factor in required skill/labor.

My opinion so far is household repairs. Meaning repairing broken furniture or messed up plumbing. Is there anything else that is very economical to fix up or create yourself?

>household repairs
this, absolutely this.

It's outrageous what electricians and plumbers charge for basic shit.

Neighbor had his hot water heater replaced. Cost him $1200. For a $300 water heater.

Electrical's even easier than plumbing (imo, I say that as an electrical engineer), and basic shit like replacing a worn-out outlet costs well over $200. For a fucking $2 part.

2nd is probably small engine repair. Cars (pickups especially) usually need a lift, and more serious tools to work on. Small engines like generators, mowers, dirt bikes, etc .... shop rates for that shit are retardedly expensive, for what you can do with a basic set of hand tools and some bench space.
>>
Small engines, stereo/av/network wiring, drifting into /ck/ territory here but butchering, breadbaking, and homebrew and liqueur-making if that's your jam

sparkies and poopsmiths have an extremely high labor rate and learning either to a journeyman level is quite valuable, and knowing your ass from a hole in the ground enough to replace a fuse or snake a drain will also save you tons, but the hobbyist midrange isn't as useful because for both you're basically buying a sign-off your homeowner's insurance (or your renter's insurance and your landlord) trusts.
i've run into this myself: replaced a toilet valve flapper, paid $50 to have some fat fuck watch me put in the $10 part, slow leak did $20k damage to the floor below that night and it came out of his bond rather than my bank account.
