Hi fellas,

Im looking for a backupsystem if the airpump in my aquaponic greenhouse dies.
I dont want to fiddle with a dissolved oxygene probe. I'd rather go in the direction check if pressure on the airtube or check if device is pulling current.
Thoughts?

install a second airpump
>>
>>1135447
If i i used an identical airpump i d be wasting energy by aerating more then necessary.
If i used a weaker pump it couldnt compensate the fail of the main pump.
>>
You should be checking your aquaponic system daily. You'll find out soon enough if a air pump is out.

Alternatively, if you don't check it every day then at least check it every other day or so. The fish will be find for a short stint of time. If you're not checking you system for a longer period of time than that then sell all your shit because you can't manage one properly.

I bought a house 2 years ago and not one week goes by without picking up 2 or 3 of these and flushing them down the toilet.

It's starting to drive me crazy because I have OCD and hate germs as it is.

How the fuck can I get rid of these without hiring an exterminator and spending hundreds?

I read the DOA created a pheromone to bait traps a few months ago and emailed them asking to buy some thinking I can just put it in centers of glue traps and empty those about once a month instead of constantly picking up these fucking bugs, But they never emailed me back or contacted me.

I don't get any other bugs in my house (including ants) but the house is lousy with these stink bugs.

I live near a swampy area but there is no mold or any type of water damage or anything. The house was inspected 2 years ago and I have yet to see the water level rise even remotely close to the foundation

Is this electric motor would be proper to use for electric motorcycle project? It was dismounted from forklifter and weighs around 45 pounds.

Kinda? Pic related putts it a little under 3,000 watts brushed. It wont be very efficient, but if you are going for a bidget build and dont need much range i'd use 4 deep cycle (i think blue top) optimas or if u want a speed boost at the cost of longevity and distance go yellow top.

Problem is lead is inefficient and heavy. And 12v as apposed to 6v is worse but using 8 trojen t-105 would make that bike weigh a ton. I'd guess if you are going no more than 20 miles on the reg then 4 yellow tops would under power it at 24v x 2 banks and u should get descent speed. Sorry. It depends a lot on every other aspect of your build.

For reference my fat ass built a bargain steel frame mountain bike with 4 12ah sla's and my 289 pound body. I could average 25 mph for severa miles with no pedling. It was 48v 1,000 watt. You have 3,000 watt at that voltage but also more weight.

I'm not sure if diy is the right place, but i'd like to start learning coding to make video games. I'd like to do the artwork and the game itself.

My goal is to make games for cell phones. Some of which would be pay-to-play or buy into for better blah blah blah. What should I be focusing on, and what should be my educational path of programs and languages to learn?

The first game I want to make is a side-scroller. Basic idea and story, 16-bit graphics. Nothing special. But I'd like to make it an RPG. I'd also like to make it multi-player online if possible. Otherwise I'll just stick to the learning curve.

Anyone have recommendations on where to start?

>>
First learn C
It'll give you a good foundation for other languages.
You can use it for microcontrollers too, which can be fun.
Recommend The C Programming Language 2nd Edition

For android, the next step is java.
Once you learn that, get android studio.

Not sure about windows phones, I think C++ or C#

Apple, I have no idea

Senior game developer here, the shortes path would be to learn C and get the fundamentals of programming right then you could learn Unity game engine, its free and you can deploy to a couple dozen system including all mobiles devices

Someone was throwing out an LCD tv, after picking it up and fixing a problem with the buttons shorting out making it turn channels randomly I am left with a tv with some deep scratches in the screen.
Google gives some pretty bad suggestions like vasoline.

Has anyone had experience with buffing out scratches in some way?
21 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Finer and finer grades of sandpaper, up to about 2000 grit, then polish with a buff and some plastic buffing compound.

But there is a good chance this will end up looking worse than the scratch, as you'll take off the anti-reflection coating in the area that you are polishing.

So you either need to do it to the whole screen, or, see if the top layer of the screen is removable and replace it with plastic/polycarbonate sheet.
>>
Magic Eraser.
>>
>>1132758
This. You'd need to treat the entire screen surface. LCD's are not perfectly glossy*, which is what you'll get once you have done your final polish on the affected area. You'd need to then polish the entire surface to match the repaired area.

*with good reason, it's terrible for viewability in all but the darkest rooms

i've actually already planned and estimated something like this in terms of the construction techniques and tools needed. its pretty cheap per square foot of wall in terms of material cost. the land cost will be the biggest purchase, even if its el cheapo land inna woods.

Redpill me on insulation. Europeans always make fun of americans for our shitty houses. What makes theirs so much better? They always say our insulation is shit. Why is this the case? Is it just a matter of most american homes being built out of fast grow wood?

I have been to Europe before, and a lot of their construction does seem "sturdier", but not anything I can really put my finger on.

Use this thread to ask questions that don't warrant their own thread.

I have a question about torque:
I have a rifle scope that I'm trying to mount in a scope mount. The scope had a warning that said not to tighten the ring bolts past 18 in-lbs. Note that's inch-pounds, not foot-pounds. The scope rings also had a warning that specified 15 to 20 in-lbs.

I called the autozones near me asking if they had a torque screwdriver in their loan-a-tool program but they didn't. They said they can order one for me but it's $100. There are some cheap $30 ones online but I don't want to wait on it to ship, I'd like to do this today.

There are torque wrenches at Harbor Freight and Autozone that adjust down to 20 in-lbs. That is the lowest they will go. I'd be comfortable with 20 but I'm worried that those cheapo torque wrenches won't be reliable at the very low end of their adjustment range. Can I trust a Harbor Freight torque wrench that adjusts between 20-200 in-lbs at the low end, +/-1 in-lbs? Any advice, tips?

I dont think you need to torque a rifle scope, just hand tighten it well
>>
>>1124410
Most of that sort of stuff that goes down to 1.5ft-lb's is specialist and unlikely to turn up for cheap + accurate readings and it really is a tiny amount of pressure really.
What I usually do is tighten the bolt so its in, not able to move back-forth and then maybe about a 3/12ths of a turn, so if you imagine a clock face, start at 12 and turn to about 2-3

I have seen people use programs to create files for laser cutters and generally make interesting furniture/ custom storage units.

I have no idea where to begin but I would like to be able to obtain software like this, so I can get past using pen and paper.
28 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
CAD software simply increases productivity, it doesn't make you a designer. If you can't do it by pen and paper then you won't be able to do it in the software either.

Solidworks

I don't want to be a designer, I just enjoy seeking out anything I don't know and make it known.
>>
CAD isn't a place for creative design. It just translates an already established idea into a digital format.

I do lots of 2D architectural design work for my company as well as graphical side work and have always started out or drafted out plans with pencil and paper first.

For stuff with actual measurements, I'll simply copy the work over to AutoCAD. For artsy stuff, I'll scan my work and trace it over in Illustrator.

I posted this on /sci/ but i think you would know better about my question.

I want to protect some electric devices from EMP. The problem is, that i want to protect them from the biggest EMP possible, as an atomic explosion or a solar expel. What ideas and advices can you give me for this problem?

I read about Faraday's cage, but i'm not sure if it can be eficient enough depending on the structure of the cage. For example, depending on metal density, or if the distance between holes is relevant.

Also, a closed and dense protection as a cave it would amplify or limit the emp? It can be a good natural substitute or complement for a Faraday's cage?

What other alternatives do you know?
25 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1135665
So long as the "cage" you use is well grounded and the metal is thick enough for skin effect, it will work. Solid metal is always better than screen or mesh. Foil isn't recommended since it is usually too thin. Hole sizes for screen and mesh matter for blocking specific ranges. That's why solid metal is better since it blocks everything. But, it needs to be grounded or it may not work properly.

No, a cave will not work 100%. Though, that really depends on how deep it is and the make up of the soil.
>>
>>1135665
/sci/ would be better.

But speaking in /diy/ lingo, basically you want to cover something in a metal container without opening, tin foil is basic tier protection, metal cabinet or ammo boxes better, fridges or cars or metal safe are all (imperfect) faraday cages and will give some protection.

A cave deals with mechanical damage and has little meaning in emp protection, you will still need a faraday cage inside the cave.

Wrapping something in multiple layers of tinfoil, wrap in plastic bag, put inside a metal box, put inside a file cabinet, put inside a container, will give you more than enough protection. If some nuke goes off near you, you have a lot more and bigger problems than the emp.

Basically the thicker and the more insulated layers the better.

Solar storm will probably create even more problem than a nuke, but also less probable to happen. If you are venturing that far, you might need to deal with flooding or earthquake first to survive seeing a solar event.

I am in the process of buying parts in-order to make a vacuum chamber. I want to degas silicon for mold making.
I appreciate any advice.

Personally I think I should get Polycarbonate. and i'm thinking 3/4in'

The process I have in mind in-order to make the chamber is practically the same as in this video.
https://youtu.be/jFUBblZgXwU

Currently I have a 10x11in' stock-pot as the chamber; its not going to cave-in from the pressure,
and my vacuum pump 4CFM.

>>Anyone here have a recommended brand of pressure gauge? Winters, Wika, ect.

For degassing silicone, it doesn't even matter. Really, you don't need a pressure gauge in the first place. You'll be able to judge progress by how much it's bubbling and how big the bubbles are.

>>Should I purchase a Brass Mini Ball Valve, or a plastic alternative?

Doesn't matter, long as it's airtight. FWIW, my hardware is all brass, if for no other reason than that's what I had on hand.

>>What thickness should the Polycarbonate or Acrylic lid be?

For a 10" lid, 3/4 is fine.

Also my preference is to just cut a ring out of a sheet of rubber to use as the gasket. Easier.

Either.

>I was planning on utilizing my remaining Platinum-Silicone as a gasket. could it work?

No reason it shouldn't, assuming you're not intending for it to just be a loose part, and not actually adhere to the lid.
