I want to engrave a motif on a cup shaped like this. Should I distort the image so it's broader at the bottom to keep the aspect ratio of the flat motif or is that not necessary?

in general I wouldn't, but it might depend on the size and shape of the image

Another problem, how do I make a template for the engraving? I guess I have to do it like a map projection but that looks like a huge pain in the ass.

Hey guys.

Can i do something with this keyboard?? It has 18 pins. Maybe turn it into USB or something? Or it is garbage...
It is from and old mailstation. The LCD is destroyed and the mailstation doesn't work anymore, is dead.

Thank you.

You may need to write some drivers. Take the entire piece apart, it might be easier to just use the base keyboard and attach some microcontroller that'll take the input from the keystrokes. Teensy is good, and often used for this.

this is all you need
there is an arduino firmware for using the board as a keyboard, you just need to write a simple code like "if row 1 and col 1 is on, then press key X"
look for "arduino matrix keyboard" for wiring and code example, its pretty straightforward
the wiring will be a mess though

You are too lazy to Google. Fuck off.

Don't help people who clearly don't use search engines. Casting and foundry info is abundant, yet shittard OP came here instead.

I want to turn this into a board for our pen&paper group.

It should be portable and cheap.

I have no knowledge of craftsmanship whatsoever and only basic tools such as a hammer and a few saws.

My idea was to laminate the paper, cut it in half, glue it on 2 pieces of thin wood and add hinges.

Any piece of advice?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1137028
Are the hinges really that important? Just laminate 2 halves separately and lay them next to each other.
>>
You could turn it into three parts so you don't have a seam along the main grid thing. One for the grid, one for the info boxes, and one for the number tracker.
>>
>>1137028
Dunno if you want this type of solution. But my friends and I have made numerous board games, and we have used this company exclusively. they do a damn fine job.

I have LEDs with an viewing angle of 120°. For my application i d like to reduce that to 60-80°. There is a solution but it involves buying clips and reflectors for each led. This would further blow up the costs by 100 bucks.
As the application will have the LEDs aligned in a strip i was thinking of using a parabolic trough like in pic related (only narrower).
With a circular parabolic mirror i can understand the reflection pattern but the trough gives me a hard time anticipating it because of the added Z-axis.

>>
>>1137027

Parabolic trough will focus the led strip spread across the width of the trough. How much depends on the geometry of the trough and mounting of the LED strip. The beam will not be focused along the axis of the trough, so the beam will spread at 120 degrees in this plane.
>>
>>1137129
What about the rays between the axis of the trough and the cut section? I have no clue how to calculate this..
>>
Make the LED strip pass through a lengthwise slit a short distance away.

I recently bought a house and the backyard light isnt working, a quick look at it showed the globe in it had blown so i have a replacement but my issue is getting into it to replace it.
As you can see in the picture the only way in is through the front (backing is solid plastic) but the glass faceplate is stuck down with some sort of adhesive that isn't budging easily.
Any ideas of how to get in easily?
Ideally without taking the whole light down?
(It's wired into mains power through the roof)

wtf.. usually, the (entire) front is hinge mounted, one-screw and opens from the front - you sure, you haven't manged to detach the outer rim of the fromt somehow? prob. I dont see how, even if you open it from the back, thats gonna help - if nothing else works,. prise away the glass, reseal afterwards - but, esp if its in an awkward position to change, throw it, get an LED, srsly.
>>
>>1137016
What this guy said. It's a cheap outdoor flood - disconnect it, throw it away and replace with an LED version. Cost about $30
>>
>>1137014
Looks like the previous owner did a DIY fix by gluing the glass to the housing with some RTV. If that is still soft, you can cut it with a razor blade around the sides. But then you'll have to clean the old glue off and re-glue the glass.

Junction box looks easy to open. Probably just the feed connected to the fixture with a couple of wire nuts or junction blocks. The fixture coupling to that box lid is a standard NPT thread, so a new LED or halogen head can be mounted easily.

Good afternoon /diy/,

Safety/advice question:

I bought this lamp from Ikea, really like the way it looks, has a QI charger and USB port built into the base. Problem with it is the bulb type it wants to accept are 7W type B. I bought it specifically to use with a LIFX LED bulb that requires 11W at 60hz according to the side of the bulb.

First, how dangerous would it really be to use the LIFX bulb if I could find some kind of adapter?

If its too dangerous, either risk of fire or ruining the bulb, how would I know if I can just replace the bulb mount part? Or would I have to completely bypass the base with QI charger and such? Can I just a multimeter to the light contacts and see what kind of power it is outputting?

I would really appreciate any help on this.

"type B" apparently refers to bulb shape, and for whatever reason they recommend that, you can nevermind it just as the fire safety disclaimer BS. It's an E14 bulb socket and you can put any E14 bulb in there, it's fed 200V AC straight from the outlet and has nothing to do with the USB charger built into the lamp base. Your LIFX bulb looks like an E27, which equally runs on 220V AC, so yes, you can use it with an E27 to E14 adapter you can probably find in any hardware store. Most likely it will look ugly though.

Ah wait, 60Hz means you're in the land of freedom, in which case it's E26 not E27, E17 not E14 and 110V not 220V, but same story.

Lockpick/locksmith general. Here's a good video on picking a standard pin-and-tumbler lock using bobby pins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjuT_63Ioig

Anyone here into locksmithing or lockpicking? I used to go to a lockpicking club on occasion, but it dissolved right before I left the city. I had a lot of fun, though, and think that there's strong potential here for a tinkering hobby to keep me sane when I go back to school and back to the city and no longer have time or workshop space for larger projects.

Who makes a good set of picks available to a hobbyist? What's the current lockpicking community like? What should I be thinking about if I'm interested in delving more into the locksmithing side of things, whatever that should entail?

Locksmith reporting in.

We rarely pick locks, though. Atleast modern Scandinavian locks are just too difficult to pick. No problem to pick bicycle locks. We use high speed grinders to remove the pins in the lock. Takes 2 minutes.

What skills does your profession entail? How did you learn your trade?

>We rarely pick locks, though.
One of the lockpick club members was a safe cracker who had cornered the market on antique safes and vaults in the region because he actually cracked them instead of drilling a hole and ruining the piece of history like the lazy competition.

never picked a lock in my life, buddy found a lock pick set that wasn't too different than your pic related... took me all of 30 seconds to unlock the double deadbolt to my house. scary shit honestly. I was aware of the tensioning technique prior to trying though. Now i have a latch bolt in addition to those.

What's a good part of the world to buy land in these days? I've been thinking of building a home.

>affordable
>should provide enough space for a home
>doesn't need to be right next to a town or city but road access shouldn't be too far away
>decent climate

Russia is giving out free land in the far east but have fun with the freezing climate and mosquitoes if you take them up on that

Klamath oregon. 1.2k per acre. Undeveloped land. Mostly forest so you can timber your own lumber if you wanna. Super remote in some parts. But if you do have any neighbors you could kill them in half and appropriate their land. Repeat until redneck forest king.

So, does anyone know where you can get these same matte mugs with orange inside, but without the logo? I have been itching for one for ages, and trying to find a website where I can put my own image on it without it costing me something like $80 or it's a bulk buy site.

Why not try to DIY? Given that this is on DIY and all.

Get an orange mug, make a stencil, spray paint, bake it on for durability. There are special bake on paints as well for guns and car parts, but you could experiment with ordinary spray paint.

You know, I'm not sure why I didn't think of that.
I'll try to find a paint thats safe for use in these things.
