I wonder if it would be possible to find who left this puppy to die in the Canadian Winter. I imagine the previous owner will be listing this puppys' siblings for sale in the near future.

It'd be nice if the breeder was charged and forbidden from breeding dogs in the future.

Sadly the kind of person who dumps an animal to die doesn't care about being banned from breeding or keeping animals, they only care for $$$.

humanity is evil okay we all know though...
But what about the other carnivors?

>play with their food (Orca)
>kill to have fun (Cat)
>rape even childs (Penguin, otter)
...

Is humanity the most evil because we know about what we´re doing?

I don't think humans are really evil, I think we just have an astronomical rate of mental illness compared to other animals. With so many neurons, a few are bound to get tangled up by the age of 20. It's all downhill from there. Really, every human should be humanely euthanized at the age of 30 because your days of happiness are over and you are too old and stupid at that point to contribute to society anyway
>>
You can't compare humans to animals

We're literally divine in nature

I think human race is a virus and all it knows is destroying its surroundings and killing other creatures to keep expanding. We know this and we're okay with it. That's my problem with humanity. I can't be the only one.

Packy The Elephant.jpg

Hello /an/. This is my first time posting here, but I wanted to leave a sort of memorial for a cultural icon of my home city (Portland, OR), a legend among zoos and a blessing to the animal kingdom.

Packy the Elephant was born just before 6 AM on April 14th, 1962. An elephant hadn't been born in captivity in the United States of America for the last 44 years, and knowledge on how long an elephant's pregnancy lasted was virtually unknown. His mother, Belle, taught zoologists and scientists that an elephant's pregnancy lasted about 21 months; over the course of his lifespan, Packy would prove this again by siring 7 children of his own, many of whom became the ancestors of captive elephants around the nation and the world.

Packy put Portland on the map with his size, durability, and natural charm, with people of all ages flocking the the Oregon Zoo just to see him mill about and trumpet. His birthday was practically a state holiday, and his family grew exponentially as he aged with grace to the ripe age of 54; one of the oldest elephants ever recorded in captivity, and potentially one of the oldest elephants to ever live on Earth.

Sadly, in 2013, he and his son Rama (who continues to live at the Oregon Zoo) were diagnosed with tuberculosis, and had to be separated and treated away from the rest of the herd. Both individuals seemingly beat away the disease and continued living normally, but while Rama has mercifully remained clean, Packy's symptoms returned in a drug-resistant form. Packy himself did not seem to be troubled by his disease, continuing his life as normal without any slowing-down or weakness, but zookeepers knew that it was only a matter of time for the big guy.

And so today, early in the morning of February 9th 2017, Packy was euthanized and left this world, positively ancient at 54 years old. He will be remembered as a legend and an icon, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Thank you, /an/, for listening.

Let's discuss animal rights, specifically those referring to pets and/or stray feral animals.

I find these laws very...weird. For example, in most western countries, I don't think it's legal to kill your dog/cat/bunny and eat it, even though we do that to cows/chickens/pigs, so what;s the difference? Is it an issue with safe food handling and processing...because it's legal to catch and clean your own fish to eat. Is it a moral issue, if so, why?

Is it illegal to kill my pet fish and eat them, or pet bugs? Would anyone even care? If not, then there's no reason the same can't be applied to dogs and cats.

Also curious about laws regarding the capture or destruction of feral animals, especially cats. As outdoor cats have been shown to be invasive and harmful to local fauna.

Do some animals just get special treatment because they're cuter?

And for the record, I have not killed or eaten any of my pets, past or present.

it's not illegal it's just taboo and retarded.

It comes down to feefees. People don't want their mascot animal harmed for the same reason they don't want their sports team to lose. So, since dogs, horses, cats, etc. are the 'most popular team' they get the most 'funds' or in this case protective rights.
>>
>>2313041
>Also curious about laws regarding the capture or destruction of feral animals, especially cats.
killing them as a random civilian will get you charged with animal cruelty unless you have a serious reason to believe that animal poses an immediate threat to you or your property. And no, cats killing birds in your yard doesn't count. cats can't really do anything that would justify use of deadly force against them just for being on your property

trap-kill programs enacted by your city or other local government are different, and they have certain methods of euthanasia that they can legally use because it's what's been deemed humane (basically that even if your city does a trap-kill program with feral cats, you as a civilian can still be charged with cruelty by useing them as target practice)

TNR or trapping and relocation of feral cats, in areas that free-roaming owned cats are legal (most areas) I don't believe there are really any laws prohibiting that, but I could be wrong.

as far as it being ethical or not, you can argue it all you want but it just comes down to people's biases and their cognitive dissonance will likely NEVER let them see how hypocrital all of it is. I mean, take a look at how factory farmed cows/pigs/chickens are treated that majority of people who call themselves "animal lovers" don't give a fuck about, but absolutely lose their god damn mind over dog meat consumption in Korea. Someome can claim dogs and cows are different for all you want, but really the reasons I've seen for this are pretty subjective and not substantiated on anything very concrete. I think we should be kind to all animals, not just the ones we deem "good enough" to be pets. But that's just my opinion as someone who works with animals and doesn't consume them. Most people will go through whatever mental gymnastics nessecary to justify that hipocriosy. gotta learn to accept it because most people feel too uncomfortable to acknowledge it.

Can a human doctor double as a veterinarian?

I just got my degree. And to celebrate, my dad wants to get me a dog. So I wanted to know, how far can I use my knowledge? I know we're different species and all, but Is there any books I can read to learn up on the doses and other stuff to take care of my dog on my own?

I would love to volunteer in animal shelters, but there are none close by.

Keep in mind, I'll still go to the vet when I have to. I wouldn't compromise it's safety. I just want to make use of my profession to its fullest for its sake.

Thoughtful discussion, please .

pretty sure you should learn how to calculate doses by weight in your 'med school' you're pretending to have graduated from. Not all humans are adults.
>>
>>2312207
There are food items you can give humans but not animals. I assumed the same for drugs and doses. I also wanted to know about vaccination schedules and such. I'm in a remote part of India, so veterinarian are expensive.
>>
In general, the same principles apply to treating animals as they do to treating humans. It's just a bit harder to diagnose problems in animals because they can't talk and explain what's wrong/what hurts.

That said...
>>2312211
You are correct, certain medications can't be given to dogs/cats/etc. And doses for different species are not always the same as the human dose by weight.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure where you could find all that information in one place, but if you search up about a certain medication, you should be able to find out about safe doses for common pets like cats or dogs.

As for vaccination schedules, a simple google search will yield appropriate vaccination schedules for kittens and puppies. Hope this helps!

big scarlet macaw bit my thumb sunday, pic related. my thumb looks pretty much normal now except for some bruising, but it doesn't feel normal. i've got some numbness in my fingertip and where he bit me. he bit right on one of my nerves, so the numbness isn't surprising. i'm just worried he damaged the nerve despite not piercing the skin. what do you guys think?

What kind of dog is this?

I just purchased a house and am looking at getting a dog for company.

Are the inexpensive if i go to a breeder, or should I look into finding one at a shelter?

I had to kick a dog

>out walking my pupper
>some guy is walking his dog off leash
>some scruffy collie cross, comes over to me and i think it seems friendly enough
>suddenly starts growling and tries to bite my dog
>quickly kick it in the ribs
>runs away whining with its tail between its legs
>shout at the owner to buy a fucking leash, then leave
>he walks after his dog because its running away

is there any way to tell if a dog is gonna be trouble, seems like it went from 0 to 100 so fast
14 posts and 2 images submitted.

Study dog body language, it can be subtle and complicated. Sometimes when it's not obvious, you'd have to be looking at both dogs' body language to be able to get a good read on if there's gonna be trouble or not.

A good indication though is that if the dog runs right up to your dog in a straight line, that dog has shitty manners at best, poor socialization, and might be trouble. At the very least, behavior like that could scare your dog or make them uncomfortable, even if the approaching dog doesn't actually attack.

Other hints: Approaching dog's tail is held up like a flagpole; dog seems laser-focused with a hard stare; dog's weight is centered more on his front half (like he's leaning forward.)

Paying attention to how your dog is reacting can clue you in as well if you're unsure--if your dog seems to be nervous, stiffens up, etc. it's probably because the approaching dog is behaving in a threatening manner. And seeing your dog go into "hey back off buddy" mode can sometimes cause those overly-forward, intrusive dogs to escalate the situation and aggress at your dog.

Some clues that the approaching dog is friendly/polite: It approaches in a curve instead of a straight line, body language is "loose" and wiggly, soft face.

And never feel bad for having to defend yourself or your dog from loose dogs. The dog's owner is responsible for having their dog under control and should not be letting their dog run up to strange people/dogs. Glad your doggo is ok!
>>
>>2313456
good advice, thanks

i'll try to have a more keen eye next time
im glad hes ok too, hes been attacked 4 times and hes only a year old, luckily he only actually got bitten once on the ear and hes fine. and despite it all hes still so friendly, just pretty timid
>>
>>2313454
Could you tell what gender the scruffy collie mix was? Also what gender is your dog? In the case of my dog (female) gender makes a bit of a difference, she's inclined to be more aggressive towards males. Also did the dog bark before growling and attempting to bite your dog?

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions I'm just trying to gauge the dog's behavior.

Like this guy said, try and be more observant with a dog's body language because there are many tells that indicate if a dog is gonna be trouble.

It's a real thing but you should be aware-

-moon jellies get bigger over time and outgrow those enclosures
-the premade stuff is silly expensive for what you get unless you're just desperately wanting to impress someone for a weekend.
-you can diy it with an under gravel filter if you really want to try it for much less $

Lastly, moon jellies are pretty boring... out of all the jellyfish options.
