anyone here own a greyhound? I just moved into a place that allows pets and I've been thinking about adopting an ex racing greyhound. I've never owned a dog before but I've heard they are pretty easygoing. any advice/opinions/stories would be appreciated.

My doggie is due for his snipping in the next couple months according to my vet- I'm trying to delay it because I had my old female dog spayed too early and she had hormonal/incontinence issues as a direct result of that. Do male dogs differ from females in this respect? Are there any benefits to not altering your dog? Aside from the overpopulation issue (which I acknowledge and understand, but it's not what I'm asking about and don't care to argue over), can anyone share any compelling reason to neuter a dog? I've always had females so I'm just curious.

with males the difference is much more drastic, and not in a good way

they're more difficult to train, more aggressive (towards other dogs and people), will try to escape/wander/run away more, piss on everything, and just generally crazier. which also makes sense considering they're stressed out from thinking about wanting to fuck 24/7 and they're not going to. its not very nice to keep a male unneutered if they're not going to breed since they'll just be anxious about it and lose their fucking mind if they smell a female dog in heat

just wait until your dog is 6 months and it'll be fine, or a year if you have a huge breed
>>
There is also testicular cancer which is even more common in some breeds than others. There are a few other diseases that I can't remember the names of atm but it is generally better to get them snipped
>>
>>2310576
I know that's the same with female dogs. The incidences of issues, including CA, with their uterus is higher if they are left unfixed.

I've had both female and male dogs neutered, and neither had hormonal/incont. issues. They where young when they had the surgery (oldest ~2 yo). Did you say you fixed your dog at an older age? Maybe that has something to do with it...or maybe the vet made an error. I'm not sure how common those symptoms are.

I've had many cats too which have been fixed and they didn't appear to have any issues after the operation.

Alright, y'all. I don't normally post personal stuff on here, but I'm feeling strong feels. My three kittens are under the knife getting spayed/neutered, and I have to wait three more hours before I get them back. I dropped them off 3 hours ago. I just keep visualizing them getting cut open by the fucking vet. Advice? Nothing preachy about morality, I've heard it all.

Well, they should be heavily sedated during, i know when my dog got out of surgery he was high af. Id say go to the pet store and pick out mad treats and toys, that should make u and them feel better

Thanks. I have treats and Fancy Feast, I'm just worried that they're going to be fucked in the head afterward.
>>
>>2310343
You'd end up fucked up in the head if they took turns pissing all over your house to mark their territory every day

I've had the same group of chickens for nearly three years now (five hens, one rooster), and none of the hens have ever shown any interest in sitting on their eggs. They could hatch them if they felt like it, it's been warmer than February weather should be. Are my chickens just retarded? Should I get an incubator? I'd like to raise them myself though, not sure I'd trust the hens to do so properly due to their apparent lack of brain cells.

Too dark to get a picture of my chickens, so you get some cute eaglets instead.

My mom figured this one out. She used to put a golf ball in the nests where they slept, before they started laying. Then they just got in the habit of sitting there with eggs.

Might be too late to try this, idk.
>>
>>2310217
Some hens never go broody. It's a disposition thing; it can vary by breed and even individual. Are you not leaving the eggs in the nest and are you sure the eggs are fertile?
Incubators are definitely the most efficient way to hatch them, but also the most effective.
>>
>>2310431
I've tried giving them a chance by leaving the eggs, with no luck. I'm pretty sure they're fertile, my rooster's a real player. I will try an incubator if nothing happens this spring, when it really warms up

does anyone on here know anything about hedgehogs? I want one but I have no idea where to start or if it's even legal for me to get one (i live in Pennsylvania)

Quick Google search shows they're illegal in your state, anon. I know some people on /an/ have talked about bringing ferrets into CA and I'm sure they do the same with hedgies.

If you're serious about getting one, do your research. They require more specific care than other pocket pets, e.g. Their cages must be kept between 72-80F and they need a pretty varied diet to stay healthy.

Depending on how vets in your area react to illegal exotic animals, it might be best to wait until you're out of PA to get one. If there are vets in your area that have experience with exotic animals and won't say anything if you bring a hedgehog in (and this is something you must research and confirm before even thinking about getting one) then it could be okay.

also be prepared to spend a lot of money. hedgehogs arent cheap. i got my guy for about $225, which seems to be around average, not including the cage (they need a 12 inch wheel, no smaller and no wire as their toes can and will get caught, toys, an heat lamp that gives off no light as they are nocturnal, a hiding space thats big enough for them to move around comfortably in, along with additional hiding places like tubes and snuggle sacks, water dish or bottle and heavy food bowl, for the bare necessities).

Dont get a hedgehog if youre a very very busy person. They poop a lot. Luckily, they tend to keep it in one spot. Unluckily, 10 times outta 10, its on their wheel, so you'll have to wash it out with dish soap and water every day. Because they shit and piss on their wheels, their feet get all gross, so be prepared to have to wash their feet as well. They also require baths with unscented baby soap about once a month, but not too much bc they can get dry skin. If they do get dry skin, or they ge grumpy while quilling, put a little oatmeat in their bath water to sooth them.

As for their diet, their main source of food should be high protein, dry cat food. Make sure the main ingredient isnt "(meat) by product" or any other variation that isnt just "meat". You'll have to mix a few types together for him to be healthy. I personally use 8 different types and put it in baggies then in the freezer to keep it good for a long time. I also give him a little wet cat food (again, holistic is probably best), mealworms, steamed carrots, strawberries, cooked, unseasoned eggs and meat and a few other things. just look up whats safe for them to eat.

Be careful who you get your hedgie from. Make sure your breeder breeds out WHS (wobbily hedgehog syndrome). Sounss cute, but its basically the equivalent to MS in humans and is fatal.

If youre planning on getting more than 1, get only females. If youre planning on just getting one, (cont.)

(cont) which is fine, get a male.

make sure they get at least an hour and a half of out-of-cage time a day. dont feel bad if you miss a day or two here and there, they dont really mind.

Anyway, i think thats just about everything. if you have any questions, feel free to ask

I'm building a tank that's about 1x3x1ft. Is that good enough to house one cardisoma armatum? I know they get big, but there isn't much information on them or how to set up their tank other than keep it warm and have land and water in it. If cardisoma armatum won't work, I may just get some hermit crabs or maybe a tank for just fiddler crabs, which I've never done before. What do you guys think?

Ive had experience with rainbows, vampire and fiddler crabs.

Rainbows are definitely more active and interesting to keep. I've had them on 70/30 land and water, ambient temp about 75f (heat matt).

Seems a little cramped for a crab that large, but I don't have experience with them.
Gecarcinus quadratus and some Geosesarma species have similar looks and stay smaller. Geosesarma are predodminantly aquatic, whereas G. quadratus is predominantly terrestrial, if that makes a difference.

How did y'all handle spaying without the dog tearing up its wound? She isn't biting it, just way too hyper.

It's a brother sister duo that always play together, and after the first day of play the wound opened up. Went back to get sutures and try keeping them in different rooms. Now BOTH are super high strung and nervous because they can hear the other howling in the other room, which just makes a domino effect.

They went from good training back to neurotic chewing and barking from the stress. It's nuts man.

Is it best to wait it out? I've gotten a heap ton of new toys and Kong fillers but it's not doing much.

Mine had a cone for .... uhhh... like 7-10 days. She broke it a day before they said to take it off. I think they prescribed meds too. The sutures were the dissolving type. They also gave her a belly tattoo to indicate she was spayed.

I imagine two dogs would make the situation a little more crazy, and I'm not going to pretend to have any advice on that. Did they give you meds?

I 100% love kongs though, they're awesome for keeping my dog occupied as needed.
