Hey guys, I'm planning to go on a backpacking trip along the coast of chile (if you've seen Chile in a map, thats all there is I guess lol).

What I wanted to ask, has anybody been on a limited budget around chile? I'm planning to go with a little more than $1000 and to stay there for about five weeks. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :).

Where do you plan to stay during the nights? 1K is not really that much money and food will cost some too, you'll probably have to do some jobs like cleaning cars or something to earn money, there's also the fact that around this time of the year young people usually do the same thing as you here, so you might find some competition, or in the best of cases maybe find a group to stick to for a while.

Bring more money?

Chile isn't a poor country, and it was already said that this is the busy time of year for traveling there so prices are a bit higher.

The peso has gone down, but I feel that $30/day gets you 2 of: food, shelter and transportation. Don't know what the hitchhiking is like there, should try to meet some Chileans on interpals and couchsurfing.

And most of Chile is actually in the valley between the Andes and the Coastal Mountains. Don't know how literally you meant coast, but there's much less on it.
>>
OP, specify what part of Chile you'll be traversing. While skinny, it is a long country that covers pretty much half of latin america so it's not exactly a place you can see from north to south in 5 weeks.

Chile is probably the most expensive country in latin america. If you're staying 5 weeks that makes around 28 USD, which means around 200000 Pesos. With that money you'll be able pay for lodging in hostels (Around 10 USD is the average though consider a bit more in touristy or remote places), eat, and pay for transportation. Note that when I say eat, I mean cooking your meals. Eating out in restaurants will considerably dwindle your budget.

Traveling here with a grand is doable, only that it's a tight budget. I am not trying to scare you off, only trying to help you organize yourself better before you arrive.

Hey guys!

I've made a lot of posts about India over the last couple of years and decided to start a general. Use this thread as a place to share stories, post pictures, give opinions, organize /trv/ meet-ups, and, most importantly, ask questions.

I lived in New Delhi for a while and feel comfortable giving advice and tips about the city and its surroundings, as well as several other states within India. I'll be going back again from December until January, so if anyone wants to meet up, let me know! I don't have too much of a life outside of work, university, and travel, so I can probably respond to most questions pretty quickly unless I'm off on a trip.

>hard mode: no "designated or "poo in the loo"

I'll start off with a question: has anybody here ever been to Kolkota? I've been thinking of going there for a while. I'm not exactly sure why, but it seems chaotic, colorful, and vibrant. What were your experiences in the city and what would you suggest doing?

Also, since this question always comes up a lot:

>no, brown girls do not crave white cock. India is a pretty shitty destination for sex tourism unless you're planning to relocate there long-term

I may or may not be going to Punjab and New Dehli due to some recent events. Any idea of what I should expect there if I do go? I have been in New Dehli once before, but I was 5 years old and only have a vague memory of it. I cannot speak fluent Hindi or Punjabi before you ask, though I'm looking at resources online.

SoCal fag here. Traveling to Indiana in February, specifically to South Bend (Notre Dame) and might stay in Chicago for a few days. Never been outside of the west coast and sun belt ever before. What's the weather like in the Great Lakes state during February? Do I need to bring parkas and shit, or will a thick sweater do? Also, what should I expect in Indiana?

Indiana sucks generally and Northern Indiana is burnt the fuck out. South Bend is Notre Dame and NOTHING ELSE. Terre Haute is executions and a dot on a map. Gary has industrial history, a HUGE SKY BLUE BUILDING and Michael Jackson. It's feels like coal soot: more than 36 hours would be depressing, especially with Chicago so close and so much similar history all around the Great Lakes. If anything you'll realize how fucked up "Reconstuction" was.

The lakeside marshes and portages offer a lot of post-Revolutionary history in terms of westward expansion before The West (Oregon Trail, gold, Custer). This all culminated the establishment of Chicago in the tiny window where water allowed for a new western metropolis and the railways necessitated one. However, all of these stuff along I-80 will be lame in the winter.

As for dress - you'll want legit gloves, a hat and a scarf. A full blown parka can probably be avoided until you get into Wisconsin or Michigan. Jeans will be fine...just wear whatever coat you'd use in Tahoe + boots, socks and thermal tights if you are skinny. I'd be more concerned about getting snowed on and forced to pay for 2 extra nights at an I-80 hotel with wifi too slow to watch video and gas station snacks for dinner.

>tl;dr
best thing about Ohio is that it's not Indiana & South Bend isn't really a place

NE Indiana fag, can confirm

I have questions for those who bike for vacation. I will be biking a total of 3 weeks. We estimate approximately 8 hours total per day for biking distance. We have stops in between but our stops are not at any locations, just mile markers.

How do I eat and drink without carrying lots of weight? We will be staying at hotels at night most nights. At most, we will need a day and a half of food and water in the event of an emergency.

What stretching do I need to do after each ride/during breaks? What additional exercise should I be doing to keep my legs from becoming exhausted?

What clothing should I be getting for cool weather? Also, we will be traveling into hot weather, what clothes should I be using when we get there?

What foods should I be eating/taking with me to prevent muscle exhaustion? I don't like to eat things with preservatives so I'd like to prepare as much as I can. I can restock at certain check points.

You sound like you have zero idea what you're doing and have done zero research about it. Basically, you're looking to have /trv/ hold your hand every step of the way. I think the best advice anyone can offer you is this: If you have to ask what the price is, you can't afford it.
>>
>>1064037
>you're looking to have /trv/ hold your hand every step of the way.
Yes, yes I am. So if you have any advice, feel free to give some. K?

Hi /trv/, i'm from Alicante, Spain, and by the end of January i'm travelling to Malmö to stay 10+- days there, a pretty nice half swedish lady hosts me so everything about hosting is solved the best way possible.
I'm looking for funny, cultural things to do there, but the tripadvisor reviews have its own limitations, so i wanted to know if somebody here could shed light on certain points:
> Live shows -metal, jazz, alternative- on malmo & copenhague from 21st to 31st
> Jam sessions
> Any worth-seeing museum, exposition or whatever kind of event far from touristy crap.
> Good -& also cheap, i know that's kinda difficult specially in copenhague but who knows- places to eat.

> Most important of all, anything else that for any reason you want to share to the community. I'll like to make a great malmö and copenhague discussion thread with people sharing its experiences.

And yep, we'll be visiting Christiania. Idk if we'll go to copenhague one day or two, but i want to know how it feels to belong to an almost self-sufficient society.

Sup Anon, I'm in Copenhagen at the moment and went over to Malmö the other day. Been here 7 days and it is definitely more than enough time here. I think 10 days in Malmö and coming over to CPH will be quite drawn out (Bur snow will be awesome)

the castle in Malmö is worth seeing with history and live animals n shit. The Turning Torso is also cool with great modern buildings with Swedish architecture.

I actually prefer Christiania to main CPH. People here seem slightly brainwashed and dronelike

Sounds cold. The right socks to wear will be a blend that contains wool. Think hiking/skiing/boot sock that contains some ability to make your feet last hours for walking in your shoes, and also not get cold if you perspire or get some snow in there. There's a saying in colder climates that "if it's cotton, you're dead."
>>
>>1065376
any recomendation on shoes?

also bringing a number of long johns, sweater / turtleneck and warm jackets should be enough isnt it?
>>
>>1065374
I'm from Miami, anon. When I plan my packing, I tend to go high-tech brands suited for my needs. So, not sure if you have that access or disposable income, either or. I know, even in my great city, that it's really hard to find a 3-in-1 shell at a local store that isn't $$$ at like a Burlington or ski shop, and that you can land in Anchorage, and get one at the local Wal-Mart for $25 or hit up some great gear stores in D.C. before an overseas flight and get like a Eastern Mountain sports shell and nice socks. So, catalogs might be your friend, esp offseason prices if you will be doing anything sporty. But, for shoes, it's great to break them in before the trip, wearing them around the house for a couple of weeks in the A.C. So, buy now, or don't sweat it, and go shopping locally. Even cheap kmart level 'coleman" hiking shoes (made in china) aren't too bad with the right socks, inserted insoles, and a boost of spray-on weather spray. Romania is not considered "expensive" for shopping if you want to beeline from the airport to the mall.

What you need to buy, whether all purpose hiking, or waterproof (or waterproof sprayed), or nice men's shoes, or good sneakers is up to your plans. If you will be walking on cobblestones for any length of time, you need to think about slippery ice, or firmer soles to keep your feet from feeling the rocks. There's a good all purpose middle ground in running shoes intended for cross-country (think forest hiking running) because of the great cushioning and soles both. A basic doc martin can be nice too. Shoes for chefs/industrial brands like dickies can provide nonslip soles and ability to dress up or down and insert insoles for cheap, too.

Alright /trv/, so there's an idea going on in the back of my head. I'd really love to travel around the world, but I'm not that rich and I want to save as far as I can and earn money whenever possible.
I'm an amateur astronomer and I know quite a lot about telescopes, so I thought that it'd be a great idea to pack a telescope small enough to fit in my backpack and travel from place to place and show people various objects on the sky and ask for a small, optional donation for it. Basically, I'd explain people stuff about the things they're looking at, I'm sure that the moon would be a pretty good target, people are always amazed when they look at it for the first time. Is it possible to earn enough money in order to buy food and transportation? I'd have no problem with sleeping in a tent or in train stations; accomodation is nothing I'd worry about. I was thinking about giving it a shot this summer in Cyprus, but I'd also like to listen to some advice.
Much appreciated

I don't think it would work. Unless you're showing sun spots you're dependent on doing all of your work at night. People are more into food and drink in cities at that time. I guess plazas would be a good place to do this.

I wouldn't give you money to look at your telescope. Where I live there's astronomy clubs that let you do that for free. In most of Europe I'd think it would be the same.

If you're into astronomy take your telescope with you. You could try doing it in your nearest local city before going to Cyprus, I might be wrong.
>>
>>1065141

If you do this your telescope is going to get busted or stolen.
>>
>>1065141
Let me get this straight, you are going to pack a portable telescope that is easy to travel with which means shit tier optics. Then you are going to set up in the middle of a city with limited field of view, light pollution, and drink assholes? Then you expect said drink assholes to pay you to look at... What, the moon? Someone undressing on th fifth floor?

I finally saved up 2 weeks worth of vacation time at work so I'll be traveling for the first time outside the US and Mexico in July 2016. Where should I go?

Originally, my number one destination was New Zealand. Mainly because of all the outdoor activities I hear you can do, for example Zorbing, cave rafting with the glow worms, and bungie jumping.
But at the same time I wanted to visit as many places as possible.
Aside from New Zealand I wanted to visit areas like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia are next down the list. And eventually Japan and Australia.

Now I understand all those are exactly all close to each other, but is New Zealand and Thailand/Cambodia/Singapore doable in 2 weeks without feeling rushed and enough time to enjoy some good spots?

If not, should I skip New Zealand all together and stay in the Thailand/Cambodia/Singapore region?

What if I decided to do Japan? what other cool areas can I visit area the country (no interest in korea)?

I only have 2 weeks to travel and will do so in July of 2016. Is 2 weeks even enough for multiple countries or should I just consider one country and visit different cities?

What do you guys think?

Remember the flights are a long time. Then you have the time differences. You will be exhausted when you arrive more likely than not.

>New Zealand and Thailand/Cambodia/Singapore doable in 2 weeks
You will get about 2 full days in each country. It would be one of the worst trips I could imagine.

If you only have 2 weeks, I'd recommend picking one country and staying there. In SEA, Singapore doesn't really need more than a few days, so you could go somewhere else as well.

I know it sucks (does it?), but you just have to remember, there will always be more opportunities to travel in the future.
>>
>>1064456
go NZ and australia and go to different states in Oz, though Im not sure if activities are still available because July will be winter season in Nz and Oz, though skiing and snowboarding will be available.

Or sg, malaysia,thailand.

2 weeks is not anough though for all of them
>>
>>1064468

hmm thats a good point about, not just flight time but the time it takes to get to the airport and waiting/security checks for the actual plane ride and then the time it takes to get to next destination coming out of airport.
Yea so definitely not NZ/Australia + SEA.

>>1064477
That is also a good point about being Winter time. If I'm not interested in skiing or snowboarding is it even worth visiting in July for any other activities?

At this rate I might really consider just doing 2weeks in Thailand/Cambodia/Singapore as my hitlist

What's the deal with Hotel Carter in NYC? Anyone stayed there?

Seems to be lots of murders, crimes, bed bugs, mold, grime, etc etc etc basically the worst hotel ever.

I stayed there once, for one night, many years ago. The deal with it is that it is cheap and in central Manhattan--close, among other things, to the Port Authority bus terminal, which probably increases the scumbag quotient. It stays cheap by offering a large number of very small rooms in a mostly unrenovated 80-year-old structure, together with negligible housekeeping or other services.

There are actually a couple of other similarly awful sleep mills in Midtown, but thanks to word of mouth and the Internet, the Carter has managed to accumulate the largest number of bad reviews and cement its only slightly exaggerated reputation as filthiest hotel in the country.

I'm thankful that I was there before the most recent bedbug population explosion--my only problem was a general air of desolation and a toilet that didn't really flush.
>>
>>1065244

Interesting. Why have bed bugs gotten out of control recently?
>>
>>1065247
I'm not sure. Periodic, cyclical population boom? Import of superbedbugs from abroad? Global warming? But I know that I only started to hear horror stories over the last 10 years or so. I was staying in seriously subpar accommodations in NYC 20+ years ago and that wasn't one of their problems. Roaches yes, but not bedbugs.
