So I'm gonna be in vegas/grand canyon for winter break, anything I should expect? Tips? Scams to watch out for?

if you hike into the canyon remember its like hiking a mountain in reverse. it will take you twice as long to walk out then it did to walk down so plan accordingly.

Me and a friend want to meet up in Vancouver, or somewhere nearby in BC if its cheaper. They're from the US, taking advantage of the weak Canadian dollar for a trip. I'm from further up in BC, rural shithole.

They want the stay to be at least 2 weeks long, at the minimum, flexible. No set dates yet, just sometime in 2016.
How would you guys recommend finding a place to stay for that long for the two of us without paying out the ass for a decent hotel room? They want to pay for the room, I just think we can find a better deal than that.

Should we look into renting an apartment for one month, etc? I almost feel like that would be cheaper.

Also, we gon fuck a lot so privacy would be preferred. No shared hostels or what have you.

> Should we look into renting an apartment for one month

Vancouver is in a "housing crisis" right now. The vacancy rate is close to zero so landlords get twenty or more applications for every available unit. Somebody who only wants it for a month will be at the very bottom of the list. Your best bet is checking Airbnb.

Hey, /trv/. I come to you with a request, and thanks in advance.
In a few months (February or March, if I recall), my mother will be taking a midlife crisis bike trip from our home in Denmark to see her family in Latvia, and see some sights along the way (primarily Kaliningrad). She's unsubtly hinted she wants some help as a Christmas present, which is nice because I'm broke, and I'm finding maps and travel guides to compile for the present.
This is where you come in, /trv/. Wikitravel and travelogue sites are nice, but there are some tips you just have to hear directly from the people who've been there.
Are there any places off the beaten track, especially in Kaliningrad, that you can recommend for someone who's obsessed with museums and early-20th century architecture?
Any tips, information or warnings regarding the border crossing in Kaliningrad (it's always best to ask if it involves Russia)?
Any travel tips that are relevant for a relatively athletic woman in her mid-forties who for some reason got the idea to bike along the Baltic Sea alone - for example details about trains in case something happens, risky areas or just general trivia that you recall?
Again, thanks in advance.

Just to mention it, she's going to be lugging around a tent and sleeping at camping sites, but I know her (and Latvians) well enough to know that camping sites are only a formality, and she'll probably end up pitching tent in the woods if she can't find any.
If anyone's going to suggest talking her out of it (I'm not sure if you'd consider it dangerous, but it is a bit impulsive), I can say that it would result in casualties. Arguing with a Latvian ends in blood.

And I'll just bump this, since it's relatively important.

Litterally no.

Use the internet at the resort, it'll be the best available even if its not the blazing fast shit you're used to at your battlrstation back home.

/trv/ I need some help with my itinerary.

I plan on going on a two week trip to China and Japan, in the summer. My plan thus far is:

>> Fly to HK and spend 1 day and night in HK
>> Leave HK for Shenzhen and spend 2 nights in Shenzhen
>> Take a train from Shenzhen to Shanghai, and spend 2 nights in Shanghai
>> Take a train from Shenzhen to Beijing, and spend 2 nights in Beijing

From China > Japan

>> Flight from Beijing PEK to Narita, in Tokyo
>> Spend 4 nights in Tokyo
>> Take Shinkansen to Osaka, and spend 3 nights in Osaka

Does any of this sound doable? My last trip to China, in 2008, I was able to move between HK and mainland relatively easily -assuming of course I had the right paperwork. My main concern is timeline between train trips to Shanghai and Beijing, and still having time to see a lot of cool stuff. Should I focus more on Shanghai and Beijing, and ignore HK this go?

I really want to see the historical sites in Beijing, and maybe do a day of hiking.

Yes if you have been to hk before
Spend more time in Beijing. There are a lot to see there.

Tokyo
Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Akihabara, Sensoji Temple, Takeshita Street.
I recommend Toyoko-Inn for hotel.
Osaka
Osaka Castle, Dotonbori (lots of food and shopping)

It might be smarter to pick just one country and explore it properly.

Consider a night in Dakar if you're staying long enough. Apart from that be prepared for cold water.
>>
First of all it all depends on what island you going to. Im not sure what moron is saying regarding cold water but most of the hotels have hot water. Theres many things to do.

1 - Volcano Climb (Fogo)
2 - Beatiful beaches - (Sal or Boavista)
3 - Try going to Tarrafal - (Santiago)
4 - Food - Kebra Canela - Small restaurant by the beach - Santiago (Praia)
5 - Clubs (Sao Vicente, Santiago, Sal, Boavista)

Dude, not cold water in the hotels... But going to the Atlantic in January will be cold.

Can you bring those tiny gift sized liquor bottles through security in North America, or will they confiscate them? I think they're within the size limit for the little liquids if you can fit them in a plastic bag, but I'm still not sure...
Be nice to have on the plane, an not have to pay the ridiculous prices they charge for alcohol on the plane.

pic just for reference
wouldn't drink any of that fucking garbage

Lol those are the ONLY liquids I bring in my carry on. You can get toothpaste and shit elsewhere. Just make sure it's not high enough proof to be flammable

They count as liquids inside your quart ziploc, so those3-1-1 TSA rules apply.
The second thing that applies is that its forbidden to consume alcohol not supplied by the airline inside the flight. Whether it gets enforced, or whether you are the kind of person who is irresponsible with your totals, non-discreet, sitting next to a hardass, anything...it runs the rick of a confrontation with flight crew (and plane being met by police for your horrible ways--- which happens very often several times a day at busy airport hubs). They rule the air, and knowing how much each passenger drinks is part of the job, and when you circumvent that, it's less about the money.
Make sure what you buy is something local/special, they wouldn't provide, and be crazy discreet about it so as not to upset your observing neighbors. Befriend the crew and be utterly polite and purchase your mixers or something. And, if you're reported, you say ohh, it's palinka, I just couldn't wait to try it at home :P

I've done it, but you should be careful. It is definitely against the rules.

Best European country to study abroad for Southern American?

I'm really into outdoors and reading. I'd prefer the demographic to be reflective of the country. I want it to be a chilly climate and to have a fun night life as well.

I'm currently thinking Switzerland, Austria and I would like maybe Norway or Finland but it seems expensive.

Can you guys help me out please?

Southern American as in Southern United States. I should have thought that through more.

I'm from switzerland.

1. It's pretty expensive I would say you look at costs of living of 1400-2000CHF per month even if you go for a student dorm or shared flat.
(about 450 rent, 100 public transport, 200 mandatory health care insurance and 800 for food/activities)
Food prices: one of the large chains delivery serivce. Prices are the same as in the supermarket.
https://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do?currentMenu=SHOP_MAIN&chlanguage=0

2. Make sure you meet the admission requirements if it's not just a student exchange.
http://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/services/admission-to-universities/foreign-certificates/
and specific for the USA:
http://www.swissuniversities.ch/en/services/admission-to-universities/countries/usa/

3. Nightlife is good in the larger cities, outdoor is absolutely awesome but can be expensive, Switzerland is a mix of once across europe the unifier is we do things the swiss way and we enjoy life the swiss way.

Hey /trv/ have any of you ever been abroad and caught up in really bad weather or a natural disaster? I'm sure most of you try to avoid it by checking the weather beforehand but sometimes you can't really be sure. So where were you while traveling and what did you endure? Post pics of the weather too if you got any.

Not abroad, but I once got stuck in an ice storm in Texas. They had freezing rain for days which ended in a 3 inch thick slab of ice covering everything. Unlike up north, Texas has no preparations for ice so you just have to wait for weather to clear it up.

We setup camp outside a Loves truck stop the first night of the storm, ''drove'' all day the next day and made it like 30 miles up the street and camped at another truck stop. These pictures are from day three when it cleared up enough for us to get moving again.

Biggest problem was our metal roof collecting and freezing the condensation from our breath, then melting and raining in the van the 3rd day.

Not abroad by me and my family were on a road trip all the way to Las Vegas. I don't remember if it was before or after we left Tucson, but we drove straight into a huge thunderstorm in the middle of the Interstate. Just kept driving lel

I kind of wish I took a picture of it, though.

Going to Denver soon, anybody know the good spots?
Looking for some pretty dope, dope shops. Also looking for bars and other places to visit. Let me know! Going camping too, but imma post in /out/ for that as well.

The weed shops are mostly interchangeable. The prices are pretty much set by law (give or take) but many are unprofessional in that they can't keep the edibles in stock or have obnoxious people with dreadlocks behind the counter. There will eventually be consolidation as will all industries. Also expect to get ripped of on accessories since they are mostly for tourists.

Wild game sausage is sort of thing in Denver too. Biker Jim's is by the baseball field and have all sort of weird stuff like rattle snake. There are other places too.

There's a lot of beautiful stuff to see and depending on your time and exact itinerary, route 287 between Fort Collins and Laramie is one of the most beautiful drives in the country if you happen to be driving into Denver from the north (via I-80) it's much better than I-25.

Hotels, especially the budget non-downtown ones run as franchises (possibly by Indians) LOVE LOVE LOVE to pound you in the ass with the "cleaning fee" for smoking (weed) in a non-smoking room.

I saw a Jesse Pinkman type at checkout distraught over a $300 charge. I suppose that you might be able to dispute those extra frees via with your credit card provider but I think the hoteliers rely on fast talk, shock and the fact you might have smoked the last of your weed right before your airport taxi to extract money before opening a window for 10-20 minutes and washing the towels and linens as usual. The hotel restriction is a hassle.

If you don't have a numerical understanding of your marijuana tolerance you're left with bad choices because you can't smoke in public and edibles are hard to dose and take 90 minutes to hit: riskgetting too stoned while walking around in town (taking an early cab home) or losing socializing and culture so you can veg out in the hotel and order delivery.

I've been tasked with driving to New York and picking up my brother to bring back to PA for Christmas.
I have no problem doing this I'm just flat broke and won't be able to pay that ridiculous toll going into NYC.
Is there a way to dodge the tolls into the city? Or am I forced to pay 14 dollars to cross an imaginary line
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Bridge and Tunnel maintenance doesn't pay for itself, you know. You could ask your taskmaster to pay. You could ask your brother to take the PATH into New Jersey. You could swing north to the Tappan Zee bridge, a $5 toll, and picking the right bridges within NYC you can avoid further tolls. The Bear Mountain bridge is even cheaper, but you need to balance tolls with the cost of gasoline.

There are multiple bridges that don't have a toll, maybe the reason you are broke is because you lack the resourcefulness that a less broke person would have used to become unbroke.

There's a bus that goes right to Grand Central Terminal, he can get on a train and meet you outside the city. What kind of a prima donna asks to be picked up in New York City in a fucking car?
