Hey /trv/ luckily I might have the chance to spend the summer with true Navajo natives. My father is a member of the tribe, so I think they'll be accepting of me. Is there anything I need to know about the deserts of Arizona/ weather/ equipment I'd need to work and explore at the same time/ Mexican drug trafficking in the Texan/Mexico region. Also, if they accept me as a member of the tribe, I might be able to live with them as my father had the chance to live among them after he became member. Thanks for the replies in advance if I forget about this post.

You are not from the region? Drink a lot of water. No, more than what you are thinking. Summer in Arizona is dangerously hot and dry.

My buddy who I interned with is going to show me around India in a few months. To get a more authentic experience I was considering a "let the chips fall where they may" attitude towards my bowel movements. Good idea? y/n

At the local Indian restaurant where I live, they have a statue of Shiva right next to the buffet. I don't know if you're caught up on your Hindu gods, but Shiva is known as "The Destroyer."

They keep the statue of Shiva next to the food as a warning for what Shiva is going to do to your asshole after eating Indian food.

Honestly OP, i have no idea what you mean.

Going to Antarctica in a few weeks on a cruise, has anyone ever been? Anything that I need to bring that I might not think about? I have plenty of camera equipment, polarizing filters, GoPro, etc. Any tips, gear suggestions, or things that I must try and see?

How much are you paying? I'd go if it wasn't so expensive.

Hello folks, I'm planning the trip of a lifetime for myself and my partner (the trip of our lifetime, I'm sure many of you seasoned travelers won't be phased by this) and would love suggestions on editing the route, or where I need to visit, places good to stay at etc just any general tips for this specific journey.

We live in the UK and are going to get a ferry the the netherlands, spend a few days in amsterdam and work our way up to denmark, spend some time there, go up to sweden, then finland, then russia (st petersburg) then backtrack to go to norway, then (if easy enough to do so) go to the faroe islands but I can see myself removing that part, then going to Iceland for at least a week and finally returning to the UK, we have just under £4000 each for the journey, 2 months to spare and are planning on starting April/May.

I would love any suggestions or critiques of the journey people have to offer.

What sort of advice are you looking for though? Anything specific?

It seems like a decent enough route. Research getting visas for Russia before going, you can't just show up at the border. Faroe Islands are interesting but might be too expensive for this trip, I suggest spending that money in Iceland instead. Unless you specifically want to see them, there's really nothing in particular that is great about the Faroes, they're more of a novelty location. Your budget is good for this trip, even though these are some of the worlds most expensive countries, 2k per person per month is more than enough.

Just because it's the Mormon mothership, it doesn't mean the state is alcohol-free. There is one notable microbrew named Uintah Brewing Company, for instance.

Also, there is a family-run large scale theme park north of SLC in Farmington named Lagoon. Tons of good roller coasters.

The state also has lots of epic nature like Bryce Canyon.

Also, Mormons are nicest people you will ever meet, even if you are not Mormon yourself.

Overall, the Wasatch Front (SLC metro area) is actually a pretty nice place to live. There are definitely worse places.

Howdy folks! I could really use some help with future traveling plans. This June, around mid-june, I want to do a cross country trip across the United States. now I have a bunch of questions about this.

1. If I go mostly by train/bus/walking what would the recommend minimal amount of money one would need to save for such a trip. Im working right now and may have $900 by the end of the month and obviously I will work until then but would 2grand be okay? I am planning on the trip being 2 months long and I have no problem being homeless i.e. staving most of the time.

2. Are there any good books that can offer advice on traveling the states? I live in the bayt area (California) so ideally the trip would be a big circle or so.

3. How do you guys that work minimum wage jobs save more to travel? How do you turn your money into money?

Thank you for all replies, im sure over the months I will post many times.

Step 1 for traveling across the US: rent a car.

Land-based cross-country mass transit in the US is a joke. With a car, you will be able to get wherever you need to go and get there on your own terms. All you need to worry about is paying for gas, and it's actually pretty cheap now with the Saudis purposely driving down oil prices to suffocate their competition.

Once more, there is no debate here. To travel across the US, you NEED a car.
>>
>>1064633
Also, in terms of gas prices, I calculated what I currently spend on my own car for gas and it comes out to ~$1.00 every 12.5 miles. So, if you were to take a 3,000-mile trip (roughly the distance from coast to coast), you would need ~$250.00 for gas.

So /trv/, what are some "attractions" in your city (or town, or wherever) that visitors should see when they're there (or even just in the area)?

>Sudbury, Ontario

>Bridge Of Nations (pic)
>The Big Nickel
>Science North

There's also the Superstack (smokestack that's about the height of the Empire State Building), but that's less of an attraction and more of a...something.

Not really a lot here since Sudbury's a less-than-relevant small city.

Tampa Bay, Florida.

The most notable things that would interest outsiders would be the beaches (frequently rated best in the continental US) as well as Busch Gardens (theme park with roller coasters) and the Dali Museum (largest private collection of Salvador Dali artwork).

Have you lived in Barcelona? If so, tell me about it.

I just accepted a job offer there, starting in late March. I can speak Spanish well enough, unlike German in my current city of Berlin. Despite the fact that it's of course it's part of Catalonia, I'm kind of pumped up to move to a city where I won't feel like an alien.

How is/was it to live there? How did you find a place to rent? I'm interested in whatever stories you have.

I saw that there was a tour operator going to Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site as a part of a tour of the former USSR, but it was lumped in with things like old prison camps and monuments. The tour was expensive and lasted about a week.

Is there any tour group that would take me directly there, possibly spend a night, and then head back? I'm short on time and would be fine with no more than 4 days in Kazakhstan.

Any experience with custom tours using Caravanistan? I think it's too far off to request a quote, but all the other places have outrageously priced tours and Caravanistan seems decent.

Hi /trv/,
I've been wondering about something for a while and I decided to come here with my thoughts. I've met tons of wonderful people while traveling and I still keep in touch with many of them today. They've offered to host me if I ever came to visit their city and I've offered the same in return. The problem is that most of these people aren't really in places I'm currently interested in visiting. So that got me thinking..

Does anyone know of a service where you can exchange vacations? For example, I'd like to stay with a local of a foreign place that would like to host me, show me around, teach me the local traditions and customs, introduce me to the local foods, and act as a tour guide and security. But that's not all. Instead of paying for the services you receive, you would in return host them and do the same.

So let's say that I visited someone in Brazil for a week or two. That person would host me and show me around and when it is time for me to go back home the Brazilian would return with me to my home. I would then host them and show them around my home country just as they did to me in Brazil.

I see this idea working quite well in areas that aren't as easy to travel to such countries with higher than normal violence, expensive accomodation, difficult to travel, or extreme language barriers. You can save tons of money on food, housing, transportation, and tour guides.

So if no such service already exists I would like to start something here on /trv/.

Isn't this basically the idea of Couchsurfing?
>>
So to start it off,

>From
Germany
>Interested in visiting
South Africa, Northern Africa, most European countries, Australia and New Zealand, Russia

If you're from one of these locations and are interested in visiting Germany I would be glad to host you and show you around as long as you return the favour and host me in your country. I'm also slightly interested in Latin America but it isn't necessarily at the top of my list.

So if you're interested, reply to me and maybe we can work something out, or at least establish international contacts and share travel info of your location.
>>
>>1064223
Sort of, yes. But I want it to be more than just staying on someone's couch for free. I want to be able to have someone take the time to allow me to divulge in their country. I look at this idea as sort of basically looking for someone to be a travel mate for a certain amount of time in their country.

For example, I own a car and would not mind at all if someone from South Africa wanted to do a small road trip through Germany. We could visit cities or even the mountains in southern Germany. Once that roadtrip is over I would return to South Africa with them and then begin almost a South Africa version of the roadtrip we just did. We could visit surfing locations or even explore the South African wilderness together.

I also hate traveling somewhere and having to pay tons of money for a tour bus or train just to visit an obscure sight. With a host you could just travel alongside them and visit that sight together.

So, I'd like this to be more than just couchsurfing, almost like a cultural exchange.

How do I get the cheapest airline tickets possible?

I'm beginning to plan my big Europe trip (first solo travel) and I want to buy a ticket from sydney sometime around end of march/beginning of april. Thing is, provided it's the cheapest, I'm willing to land anywhere from Moscow to Diyabakir to London. Also, I understand that prices can fluctuate a lot depending on when you buy tickets, is it simply they get more expensive closer to the date, or is there any more to it?

>>
This is sort of an alternative solution but instead of spending x amount of hours trying to find the cheapest flight you can just use skyskanner or some other cheap flight website and use all the time you saved to sell some old junk in your house that you don't need or make money some other way that's within reach for you. The more time you spend trying to save some extra money on airline tickets the less profitable it becomes so don't waste too much time on it, eh.
>>
Cheapest routes in the USA usually involve booking witth a shitty budget airline, like Jet Blue, to a major hub, like JFK(NYC) ), then getting deals/cheap flights out if there. It can suck moving your luggage from one airline to another and it takes more coordination on your part. Skyscanner is the best one stop shop for researching this. Or you just find the cheapest flights out of your country to your destination or close to it, then find cheap tickets to that airport, and cheap tickets from where the plane lands to your final destination (these primary and last leg tickets can be bus or train, as well as flights)
>>
>>1064220
>Also, I understand that prices can fluctuate a lot depending on when you buy tickets, is it simply they get more expensive closer to the date, or is there any more to it?
There really arent that many tricks to it. For a random number, let's say there are 13 "cheap" seats on any given flight, and then those fare codes are sold out. The next fare up has 6 seats, and so on, right up to travel day prices. Each airline operates their codes per their wishes. Can be 20 different prices in Coach as an example. Supply and demand economics takes care of the rest. In the meantime, there might be a sale or an offer that adds some deals, or there might not be a sale at all, just fewer and fewer bargain seats left as people book. Maybe a tour will snatch all the cheap seats the day the flight got coded for that date.
Just set up a fare watch or check out the fare now, and get an idea for what is usual and customarily the price for these routes, and whether traveling on certain days gives you savings or not.
If you are traveling around Easter? Expect a ton of school kids to be on holiday and that demand thing.
